a very long messy review of link click (season 2)

alright so reading through a bunch of (mostly negative) reviews of the season thus far i've come to my own conclusions over how this season felt, and i really feel like addressing them since i personally feel like it deserves recognition (and rightful criticism) within certain aspects. really interested in everyone's takes so lmk whatever you think about all these aspects i'm about to gloss over.

NOTE ; i'm not going to be talking about the art direction or OSTs . i believe those have been nothing short of phenomenal and i feel like we can all universally agree over that

1) tonal shift : from a more emotionally driven s1, coupled with sprinkles of slice of life moments, we turn to a mostly thriller/mystery plot line. personally, i've always seen this coming. the tonal shift really didn't take me by surprise. with the lg stabbing at the end of season 1 it almost seemed inevitable that the more light hearted aspects of the first season weren't going to happen. more importantly, it was very clear that there was always a higher presence to fight. link click was always meant to be a thriller, this was always the plan, and so i suppose logically i assumed the second season would follow that path. i understand how people might've felt disappointed, or 'robbed', but i don't think the shift was all that shocking quite honestly, it was always set up. link click was never light hearted, even at s1.

the more shocking shift has to be the shift from an emotional, to suspenseful change in writing. the emotional writing in link click has always been the best part of the show and that hasn't changed, the emotionally driven plot lines of s2 (chen bin, ltc/ltx) have been written very well. the suspenseful writing also works. replaces the tear jerkers with an unsettling anxiety, and it's executed relatively well. you can clearly tell that the crew's been experimenting quite a lot with this season, and yes, that's usually what season 2 is for.

2) pacing : now i totally get the criticism in this aspect. in my opinion, the weakest part of s2's been the pacing. with overly drawn out fight scenes, and unnecessarily long recaps, i think the issue has to do with the fact that lc just has a LOT to address, and so it makes us feel less inclined to sit through longer scenes that don't directly advance the plot.

obviously i get that the fight scenes show off a lot of the animation budget #tm and they do look great but the fact that we had way too much time dedicated to a five minute long fighting cutscene in the FIRST episode just made me feel impatient.

3) red herring endings: alright this might be an unorthodox opinion but, aren't red herring cliff hangers a norm in general with these kinds of shows lol. idk i've come to expect the total opposite every time so it doesn't really bother me i guess i'm just used to the medium. not really a lc problem it's a story telling problem in general but that's just marketing i don't know what else to say.

it'd be nice if they followed through but some part of me thinks they're pulling a whole boy who cried wolf situation, eventually they'll pull the trigger when we don't really expect it.

4) shipping/ main trio reconciliations : it's a really serious ongoing situation. i kind of get why the main trio/shiguang don't get a chance to talk things over amongst themselves, it just isn't the time. keep in mind everything that's happening rn is happening continuously, there are no gaps within the days or anything, kind of makes sense that they don't really talk about it. they probably will get to once it's all over, which might be well into s3. again, this was always meant to be a thriller more than it was trio focused. also idk about you guys but i think we actually did get a lot of sweet moments within the trio, cxs and lg, even the sibling dynamic with ql and cxs were really lovely this season.

5) the women: okay i REALLY don't understand the problem here. the women are written well. ql is written FANTASTICALLY and all side characters like ltx and that one red eyed lady i'm forgetting the name of were great too. hell even chen bin's wife was great. i think for a donghua/anime where women are usually given dirt in terms of actually strong writing, lc has always been very solid. their lives do not revolve around the men in the show it just happens to be that men are a part of their lives. they have very distinct personalities and aren't treated like weird objects to gaze at (what a bar lol) but yes i do think the women are written quite dimensionally.

6) unanswered questions : when have linear shows ever answered questions (especially mc based) in season 2?? when has season 2 EVER tied loose ends? when it comes to linear television, season 2's purpose almost always build towards a greater evil/climax. there's a reason why season 2 hasn't answered questions we've had, season 2s in most shows rarely ever do. from what i can tell, with a confirmed s3, i've always expected s2 to simply do its job as a second season and further raise stakes and raise even more questions. i do get the frustration, i get the lack of any backstory, but i want to refrain from making any actual comments over that till every episode's aired ahah, however, im not too mad at it. i just think this show's ride is currently still at an increasing accelerated pace (guys i'm sorry i study physics), things will only be explained once we've once hit the climactic point or go downhill right after. time will tell i guess

Conclusion

overall, i think this season was actually pretty solid. s1 set a very unrealistically high bar, as s1 in my opinion is one of the best seasons in television period. but s2 and s1 shouldn't be compared in the same way, their tone is quite different, and needs to be analysed individually instead. i'll make a complete review once the season is over, but honestly i've come to enjoy the season most when i stop expecting too much out of it. i think people had way too many things they've expected from s2, that were bound to simply never happen.

that said, i do hope the crew takes the valid criticism regarding the pacing (and ig the character focus?) into consideration and implements it well into s3. it's worth noting that i believe nothing was meant to be complete with s2 in the first place.

i've really enjoyed this season, and i'm beyond ecstatic to rewatch it all once it's done airing, in order to properly take it all in. it's had its flaws, more than s1 has had (let's be real s1 had little to none). but that's bound to happen to shows when they head down their linear routes. currently sitting at a 7/10

1. What is your favourite childhood movie and why?

Strangely I’d never been big on movies or tv as a kid or even now (I want to get more into it now but my adhd still says no) my mum even told me that when I was young she could sit my brothers in front of the tv to be entertained but not me, I’d lose interest hella quickly… probs the first time I got into anything tv related was when I was 10-12 and was invested in the drama of the tv series “dance academy” on abc3 Ive actually met the producer! other than that I didn’t mind a reality show as a kid but then most of that wore off after I studied media in school and we went as live audience to “reality” shows and I realised how set up everything was and couldn’t care less afterward -

If I had to pick any movie that I loved and that still strangely brings me some sort of comfort.. it would have to be the 2010 Jaden Smith Version of Karate Kid ahahaha idk why (well I kinda do there’s lots of reasons but then I’d go on another whole tangent so I won’t) I was like 11 when it came out so I think that can count :) I can weirdly watch it over and over whereas most other movies I watch once and never again.

2. Do you have a favourite book or book series and why?

I talked about this in some previous posts on here but my fav book of all time is “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine” by Gail Honeyman !!!!! I also am very passionate about “The uncaged sky: my 804 days in an Iranian Prison” by Kylie Moore-Gilbert (the audiobook version narrated by Kylie herself) and fav wholesome series has gotta be the Heartstopper graphic novels!!!! AHAHA again I could go on and on and on about why I love them all individually as they are all VERY DIFFERENT from each other, but I’ll literally be writing like 3 giant essays so I’ll stop myself now!! I will say, while it’s important we consume and love media that we don’t relate to to broaden our perspectives of life, it’s obviously easy to consume and love media that we see a small part of ourselves in and think this has a lot to do with why I love these so much!

I’m ngl I don’t have a super passionate answer about this one off the top of my head (sorry I’m such a boring person!!) I think they’re all so pretty!!! I gave them a google to try decide which I like most but it’s impossible .. I think I love any of the blue ones!! I’ll tell you one thing I rlly don’t love the yellow topaz cos I’m born in Nov and I see it on everything and I swear it’s the worst one imo like liteeally any other one I love! But I can still appreciate it ig :,)

6. Any activity you liked as a child and do you still like it now?

My biggest pain as a child was athletics!!!! I used to be competitive in 100m, 200m, long jump and triple jump :) sadly I no longer do athletics or compete but my passion for running/competitiveness lived on and by 15 I ran my first half marathon.. but from 17 onwards I got quite sick and was unable to run (minus a few little months of getting back into it over the yrs only to have to stop again) and now I’m 24 and finally getting back into it again.. kinda.. cos my health is still kinda shit but I’ll go for a lot shorter runs a couple times a week and hoping and praying my health gets better so I can proper get back into it.. not to compete anymore just for myself cos it’s one of the only things in this life that brings me joy :) I’ve also always loved taking photos although I’m not professional or anything it’s just been a fun little hobby I guess.. I have a few diff cameras but in currently trying (failing) to save for this new different one.. just waiting for my uni scholarship money this tri bc I’m too unwell to use it to go on a holiday atm I’m gonna use it to buy this camera I’ve been wanting oop :,) I’m a much bigger a fan of film photography over digital but the camera I’m planning on buying is kinda a combo of both eg. It produces images of a similar vibe to film photography but is actually digital so u don’t have to worry about wasting film :) it’s also a point and shoot, super small and can be taken anywhere which is much better than my current digital camera which is bulky and has a million settings idk how to use lol.

7. Have you ever read Lucy Maud Montgomery books?

I was about to say no I’ve never heard of her but then I googled it and saw Anne of Green Gables which I read when I was like literally 8… and as I’ve said in a previous post I never remember what I’ve read even if I read it two minutes ago bc adhd tings but I always remember how it made me feel - and I remember really enjoying it! Maybe I should give it a reread cause I barely remember what it was about :,) as for the rest of her books I don’t think I’ve read any! I love so much that you have a fandom page omgggg I wish I was that passionate about something !!!! PLS PLS give me recommendations if someone were only to read 1 of her books .. okay maybe 2 for now!!!!! I might actually give them a read :)))

hey um. what's geostationary orbit and why is it impossible for TAG's TB5 to achieve?

Hello!! I'm assuming you're coming in from the stack of memes I made lol so welcome welcome, this is my well-known pet peeve and I will happily explain because it involves my favourite subject - physics!

"Impossible to achieve" isn't quite accurate - my argument is formed purely on the observational evidence of where it is, such that when the show makes references to TB5 being in geostationary orbit it doesn't make sense because it's simply.... not.

So strap in, I'll go through this as clearly as I can but feel free to ask follow up questions :D Or just generally hang out lol TAG is a fun time despite the handwave-y physics ahaha :D

1. What is geostationary orbit?

Geostationary orbit is the specific orbit where a satellite/space station/whatever moves with the exact same period as the Earth's rotation i.e. 24 hours AND is placed so that the object is directly over the equator, it will move in that orbit at the same rate as the location it is over, so that it will always be over that position at all times. This gives it the name "geostationary", implying that the Earth doesn't move relative to the orbiting object, or if you look down you'll always see the same place.

Both conditions must be met for geostationary orbit to occur; an orbit with a greater or lower period will fall out of step with the Earth fairly quickly, and if not on the equator, you'll get a related type of orbit known as a geosynchronous orbit which will move up and down relative to the equator rather than staying put.

Furthermore, I won't take you through the calculation (1 | 2 | 3), but using Kepler's Third Law which is sufficiently accurate for this scenario, this orbit must always be ~36,000 km above the Earth, or the quoted 22,500 miles in the show. That is the main evidence in the show that implies that the writers intended for TB5 to be in geostationary orbit, like TOS was written to be.

However....

2. Why can't TB5 be in geostationary orbit?

It's not that it can't, it's that it isn't! There's two main reasons for this that I return to when grumbling about this to my friends (they are long-suffering on this point lol thank goodness they're reasonably good-humoured about it...)

Reason 1: The size of the Earth from TB5

This is the most damning evidence. Let's make some visual comparisons.

This is what the Earth looks like from the International Space Station which maintains an orbit about 400 km above the surface of the Earth (in a region known as Low Earth Orbit).

It's a little more complicated to show what Earth looks like from geostationary orbit as many satellites in this region are communication relays or broadcasting satellites (very appropriate for TB5 it must be said!!) But that being said, this is a full disk image of Earth from Japan's Himawari 5, a weather satellite in geostationary orbit.

Now take a look at the animation in TAG and decide for yourself what was being used as inspiration!

But I'm a physics nerd, so I won't take blind faith in some pictures! No, no - if there's a specific height that an orbit must maintain in order to remain in this orbit and the size of the Earth doesn't change, then it should follow that the Earth must be some kind of stable "apparent" size that we can figure out. Think about a freestanding house from 40 m away. It doesn't matter in which direction the 40m is, the house takes up the same space in our vision. The same follows here.

Once again, I'll gloss over the calculations ( 1 | 2 | 3) and simply state that from geostationary orbit, the Earth should take up no more than about 20° of our field of vision. In comparison the visual angle of the Moon is about 0.5° so it's still going to look really big!! But not as big as you'd see from the ISS :P If you make both hands into fists, place them next to each other and hold them at arms length from your body, that would be the approximately the width of the Earth from geostationary orbit.

So TB5?

....might be a wee bit closer than that 😂

Reason 2: The locations on Earth

This one's a little looser, but it illustrates my second point - in order to be geostationary, TB5 needs to..... stay over one location? Like okay sure it has rockets and engines so that it's able to move around, we've seen them plenty of times. But that doesn't change that fact that even when these are not in use, TB5 is never in one place.

Here's some examples…

The Strait of Gibraltar (Spain and Morocco) | 1x07 (Runaway)

Looks like Japan in the background to me | 1x07 (Runaway)

Ireland and Great Britain | 1x08: EOS

Cheating a tad, but he's only just launched so it's reasonable to assume that here TB5 is over SE Asia | 2x02 (Ghost Ship)

None of these are examples where John's manoeuvred TB5 into position like he does in Skyhook (1x11) and Impact (2x09) so it's reasonable to assume that TB5 is following its assigned orbit... and its not geostationary!

Moral of the story: TB5 could be in geostationary orbit, there's nothing stopping it! But uh... it's not. Thanks for listening ;D

Mc dragged themself out of the room as the sign language book was shoved into their bag alongside the books they would need for their classes. They yawned a bit, they had been up all night trying to figure out how to sign, they couldn’t let it slip that one of their soulmates was a demon, especially the demon prince.

As they entered the Dining room to be faced with a few people sitting at the table. Lucifer glanced over at Mc. He started to move his hands to start making a few signs in their direction. Mc noticed and took a moment to try and think before signing back in his direction. “Good Morning Mc.” “Good Morning Lucifer. You learnt sign fast.” 

Mc was still waking up so a few signs were a bit messy and incorrect, but Lucifer was getting it, or his pride was in the way of admitting he didn’t know some of what Mc was signing.

Satan seemed to glance over and noticed the hand movements, seemingly understanding the conversation going between the two. “What are you two doing?” Asmodeus asked as he scooped some Bat Jelly into his spoon and watched the two. 

“Sign Language.” Satan explained to his brother and he made a small motioning with his hands, which was just ‘hello’ which Mc smiled and signed ‘Hello’ back to the best of their beginner ability. “Satan is correct.” Lucifer responded as he went to take a sip of his coffee. “Which you all will be required to learn.” Lucifer’s eyes specifically shot towards the white hair male.

“Hey! What ya looking at me for!” Lucifer sighed and shook his head, he wasn’t in the mood for this - not after spending all night doing paperwork and learning the basics of sign language. “Oh MC! You know sign. How do you say my name?” Asmodeus asked as Mc sat down beside him. They were really glad they spend an entire night going over this....

Mc was trying to figure out their way to their next class inside of rad, they awkwardly started to walk by a group of demons as they were all whispering about them, wanting to eat their soul.

“Hey, You there.” A voice called behind, causing Mc to turn around to see a white haired male. Though what stood out was a streak of h/c hair that was standing out of the white. [If your hair is white, change it to your favourite colour]

Mc tenses up a bit as they grab the strand of white/blue hair and tucked it away to hide behind the rest of their h/c hair.

“That’s right, I’m talking to you, the human with that fightened, tormented look on your face that demons love so much.” The white hair male smiled a bit. “You’re practically screaming  ‘Come eat me! I’m Scrumptious!’” He chuckled a bit. “Your name is Mc, right? This D.D.D here belongs to you, right? I saw you drop it just now. Here, take it.” He placed it into Mc’s palm.

Mc glanced at their phone, checking if anything happened. “Haha. What’s with that look? There is no need to be suspicious of me. My name is Solomon, I’m an exchange student from the human world, just like you. Nice to meet you Mc.” Mc started to type before showing Solomon the screen. ‘Nice to meet you...I need your help.’

Solomon looked up from the screen. “What’s that now? You’re saying you need my help? But you’ve got Mammon looking after you, right? Although, I guess he is more of a liability than an asset..” Solomon hummed. “Choosing Mammon for a job like that, you have to either be crazy or playing a joke...Lucifer is trying to mess with you...” He laughed a bit. “Ahaha, poor you!”

Mc just glared slightly at him, though he just seemed to ignore it. “ Still, despite your situation, you’re going to be fine. Things aren’t bad enough that you need my help. Trust me, I can tell.” His eyes seemed to look at someone behind you. “Uh-oh. I better get going. See you around Mc, Take care.” With a small wave, Solomon left your view.

“Mc.” Mc jumped a bit at the new voice, Mc glanced behind to see Lucifer standing behind them. “Good morning again Mc.. You’ve become quite the celebrity here, haven’t you?” He hummed before he started to sign a bit, though Mc was thankful that Lucifer was speaking as he was signing, it made it easier for Mc to know what he was trying to say.

“You were talking with Solomon earlier? You and he are the only human exchange students. Seeing as you’re both human,it’s fine if you associate with him.. but know he can’t be trusted.” Mc didn’t know if they could trust Lucifer’s words about Solomon. 

Mc soon clicked their fingers, getting the attention of Lucifer. They started to sign a bit. “I have a question. What happens if something gets confiscated?” Lucifer hummed as he read the movement before taking a moment to respond. “Why would you want to know something like that? Regardless, I suppose it doesn’t hurt to tell you. Compared to other schools, RAD allows quite a lot of freedom, but if the student council decides that a student possesses something that is causing problems, we do confiscate it in some cases. Sometimes we return items, and sometimes we dont. Any particular reasoning?” Mc was pretty glad that Lucifer went to speaking instead of signing - Mc know how to sign, just now the struggle of understanding long sentences and more complicated words were a different story...

‘What is Mammon’s most important item?’ Mc signed a bit as they noticed Lucifer taking a bit longer to figure out. “That would have to be money. If you took all of his money away from him, what else would be left? Nothing. Money can take lots of different forms. But regardless, Mammon will spend it as long as he has money in his hands. So in order to impose some limits of my own. There is a certain form of money I’ve frozen in his case..” Before Mc could do anything else, The bell rang. “You’d better hurry to class, you wouldn’t want to be late on your first day.”

Mc watched as Lucifer left their sight, a small sigh left them as they started to look for the class they needed. They would find themselves seated behind Satan and in front of Beel, while the seat beside them was empty, though a pen had scribbled ‘Belphegor’ on the side along with Satan and Beel’s names - with a burger, cat and stars nearby - Mc could take a guess who their seatmate is.

They pulled out the sign language book as class began, time to get this all in their head...

Mc laid in bed as they were studying through the sign language text book - with their tastebuds reacting to different foods - guessing their soulmate was eating... As much as their books scattered on the ground that had homework to be completed, Mc was more concerned about keeping up the lies on not being able to speak. 

Mc soon heard a ping of their D.D.D, picking it up to notice a message from Levi

Leviathan You say Lucifer mentioned having frozen something?  Are you Absolutely sure that’s what he said? Mc Yep, I’m sure. Leviathan Come to the kitchen. Right now. Don’t tell anyone that you’re meeting with me. I don’t want to be mistaken for hanging out with a human normie.

Mc sighed as they stuffed the sign language book underneath their bed along side the green cat notebook. They grabbed their jacket and zipped it closed before heading out to meet with Levi

Hearing noises of someone eating, Mc tenses up and covered their mouth as they turned the corner to find Beelzebub eating whatever he could find. “Oh. What are you doing up so late?” Beel asked as he tossed the empty carton of food in the bin. ‘I was hungry’ Mc lied as they mouthed it to him

The male smiled a bit. “Ah, you’re hungry? That makes two of us then. In that cause, I understand the feeling of hunger at night, its not like you can wait til morning. Oh and the refrigerator is empty. I already ate everything in there.” Beel smiled, though he seemed a bit apologetic about it. Mc glanced at him. ‘Beelzebub?’ 

Beel humed a bit as Mc mouthed out his name. ‘Who is Belphegor? He is the guy who was meant to be sitting beside me in class. Was he sick?’ Mc wanted to know before they would end up finding a random demon next to them...

Beel seemed to tense up and his face turned into anger. “Now Listen. Don’t you ever mention him in front of Lucifer. Just so we’re clear, I’m not going to tell you anything,either. Lucifer would yell at me if I did. and don’t bother asking any of my brothers, either. No one talks about him.....Even though he is our brother.” Mc soon clicked. Belphegor, was the brother who was missing. They met 6 of them, besides the youngest....what happened? “We have to treat him like he doesn’t exist...It’s not right...” Beelzebub’s face faltered and he sighed. “But since no one can defy Lucifer....” He pushed the feeling aside and looked back at MC. “You know what? This isn’t any of your business, human. I’m leaving...” Beel left the kitchen

Mc was left in silence for a moment before hearing. ‘Psst...hey!’ Mc looked around to find Levi getting out of a cupboard. ‘Why were you there?’ Mc mouthed over to Levi. “What do you think? Beel was just in here! I can’t have him finding me here with you! Now can I?!” 

Levi cleared his throat before speaking again. “If it’s really true and Lucifer definetly used the word ‘Frozen’? Then it has to be hidden here.” Levi started to dig through the freezer, taking out some bags of ice, an old tub of ice cream and soon stopping as he took out a chunk of ice with a card inside. Mammon’s Credit card

“Found it! Lucifer wasn’t lying. It really IS Frozen.” Levi found himself starting to chuckle as he started to take it out. “Gah- It’s really heavy...” Levi grumbled as he carried it towards the microwave and shoved it inside, turning on the appliance.

“What’s up with all the racket,you two?...Hey! Wait a minute!...There in the microwave...” Mammon took a double take a froze a bit. “That looks like Goldie! my credit card! My baby! The one thing more important to me than life itself...! Get it outta there before it gets damaged!”

Levi took it out, luckily some of the ice melted so it was easier to hold. Levi dropped it on the ground, to let some ice break off and he pulled out the card.

“So, Mammon. Do you want your card back?” Levi hummed as he held the card in his hand, clearing having the power in this situation. Mammon got on the ground and bowed a bit, clasping his hands together as he begged. “You’d BETTER! um...I mean yes, please...Please give it back, Leviathan, sir...!” Mc was surprised at this sudden change in attitude.

“ Wow that’s embarrassing.” Levi laughed a bit as he held the card. “I can’t believe all it took for you to abandon your pride! You’re even down on your knees! You’re one of the rulers of the Devildom, Mammon. Shouldn’t you be ashamed of yourself?” Levi calmed down a bit and sighed. “Well, whatever... If you want your card back. I want you to give me the Seraphina figurine you won at the convenience store.” Mammon looked at him, confused. “I don’t remember winning anything...”

That comment clearly didn’t help Levi’s anger. “I don’t believe this! You forgot that you even had her! How could you!” Mammon groaned as he just wanted his card back. “I’ll give ya what you want, Just give me back my credit card!”

“Alright, but there is one more condition: I want you to make a pact with this human.” “Right a pact, fine. I’m more than happy to do whatever you-” Mammon suddenly froze at what he heard. “...wait WHAT?! Why d’ya want ME to make a PACT?!” Levi smiled a bit and hummed. “Think about it: If you make the pact with MC, you do what ever you’re told, right? Then Mc will order you to give me back my money immediately! And since you can’t refuse, you’ll do exactly that! Game over, I win!”

Mammon grumbled. “I don’t believe this. It’s just money Levi! I can’t believe you’d go through all this trouble!” Levi’s happiness soon stopped as he started to argue back. “Remind me again who tossed their pride aside to get his hands on a credit card?” 

Mammon looked over at Mc. “Human! What’re ya thinking, lettin’ Levi use you like this? Are ya stupid! Go on! Say something.” Mc looked at the two and sighed silently before looking at Mammon and mouthing out. ‘Make a pact with me, Mammon.

“No way! Not interested! I am Mammon! Avatar of Greed! One of the seven rulers of the Devildom! Fool...do you actually think I would let some human be the boss of me?!” Levi hummed as he held the card in his hand.

“Oh Lucifer! Mammon’s here unfreezing his credit card!” Levi called out. Mammon suddenly changed and laughed. “I mean of course! I’ll make a pact with you human! I’d be thrilled to!”

As the process began. A light burning sensation was happening on their back, around about where their heart is located. A small flash of yellow appeared in their eyes before turning back to one e/c and the other purple [thanks to their soulmate].

Their pact with Mammon has been made.

2. fave band - the Peter Gabriel thing was a total divine accident. I was out dancing at an 80s-90s music video mashup night and Sledgehammer came on. I remember hearing the opening flute riff and seeing some guy near me contort his body in sudden recognition. the first beat hit and I can only imagine this is what people feel after doing their first hit of some deadly euphoric drug. the rest is history; I felt something in my brain go *clunk* and it was game over.

6. ahhh so many over the years but right now it’s Us by Peter Gabriel. I’m a total basic bitch for a good melody and that album is full of them, not to mention extremely relatable themes around longing, connection, “am I the problem,” and more. honorable mentions go to Age of Adz and Carrie and Lowell by Sufjan Stevens, Not Even Happiness by Julie Byrne, the original Hadestown album pre-Broadway, and O True Believers by James Blackshaw.

40. mmmm to keep it brief: I’ve always been a deep feeler and music felt like the one thing that could mirror that. I grew up listening to a lot of hyper-melodic music like Yanni and inventing dances to go with it. I was in band and choir all throughout high school and college and kept singing in different groups after college. now I get such a charge out of dance, karaoke, live shows, and jamming on my uke. music has also helped me remember moments in my life, i.e. the first time I heard a Julien Baker song while driving through southern Colorado in a rainstorm. like life snapshots.

46. to pick only one: Let’s Go Crazy by Prince (a previous artist hyperfixation lol)

I just adore this photo. it captures so much I love about this goofy man. I really relate to his perfectionism and tendency to get sucked into details. I love that he’s not a do-it-in-one-take guy like Prince. he’s obsessive and kind of lost in his world. but still tries to look up and out at the rest of the world around him. plus I love that Parachute label he wore so much of in the 80s (like this jacket here). p.s. i can play two instruments! the piano and guitar, though i'd say i'm pretty rusty with both. given the practice, i think i could get back up to par again with the former? i formally learnt both in the sense that i know the rudiments of music theory and can still decently read notation, but that's about where the extent of my knowledge ends...hasn't stopped me from getting absolutely obsessed with the intricacies of instrumental osts when it comes to mechanics, aesthetics, leitmotifs, etc. asflkdsj

[ olive ] what gives you the most inspiration for your muse(s)?

it really depends on which muse i'm writing! in general, i like to revisit their canons (i.e. replaying their games or rewatching their movies) and examine all the details and overarching themes/motifs i can catch in them if i need a boost of the Muse Presence, but sometimes i'll take inspiration from completely unrelated media i've consumed that i feel could be applicable to my interpretations

e.g. i've been taking some tidbits from caine from jw4 for link recently, in that he's someone who knows his "role" in life, is really fucking good at playing it (however much he doesn't want to), and would give almost anything to escape it. even as he's totally settled into it! despite the myth he makes of himself in this one movie he shows up in, he's a ghost in his own world. he goes through the film reluctant to do the things he so easily does anyway, with his hand forced by the high table because he has someone he loves so deeply, yet at the end of it all: he's still afforded some measure of happiness because he was loved by someone so deeply in turn. these two are really not the same type of characters at all, but caine's Vibes are part of the Feel i want to communicate through link's story!

other times, i'll come across a fic (often not even for the same characters or media lskjdf) that gives me the worst brainrot and that'll flavour how i want to frame my writing and what i want readers to Notice for muses. but i otherwise tend to keep it contained to overanalysing canons! honourable mention @ my partner, for being the best sounding board and engaging with me on all my rambling ♡

[ navy ] what do your muse(s) mean to you?

they're my best friends, they're my pals, they're my homeboys (gender neutral), my rotten soldiers, my sweet cheeses, my good-time fellas—

they're my blorbos of all time! they mean so, so much to me!! especially the ones that have stuck around for nearly or exactly a decade like link, the zeldas, aidan, and gold; those were some rough (trans)formative years that they carried me through, and i had so much fun with them! i still am!! plus, the friends i make through writing these muses will always leave such an indelible impression on me no matter how many years pass (i am looking directly at people like issie and adri and kris as i say this sldfjdkf still leaves me gratefully gobsmacked that i found you again after so long!) ♡

[ mulberry ] what tips would you give someone with writer's block?

don't force it! try not to agonise over it. come back to it at some other point after you've gone and done something else that might be just as creative in nature (drawing, crafts, etc.). dip into your other hobbies if you have them! read. watch things, play games! consume as much as you've outputted! take care of yourself!!

above all, remind yourself that you're more than whatever writing you can give to anyone!

[ blonde ] what is your favourite type of music? favourite artist? favourite song?

hard to choose, because i don't have a genre i'm super dedicated to? ig if i had to pick based on what i generally listen to a majority of the time, my favourite type would be whatever category osts fall under askdjlf

i think it's also because of that that i tend to steer towards songs i can't understand without translations? if there are words i can pick out, i get a bit too distracted, and half the time my audio processing issues make it so that i only sort of make out most of the words, which distracts me on a different level sdkfjfl following that, my favourite artist(s) in terms of songs with lyrics would probably be yoasobi :) i listen to their pieces the most consistently!

ahhh...literally will never be able to choose a favourite song when i have so many! for the moment...i'll pick rito village, as played by kass and his sweetums!! it's just such a sweet rendition ♡ and i want more people to be reminded of it! lmao you thought me leaving my birdies for a hot second would get rid of the brainrot. absolutely not they've still got a Grip on me sldfksjdl

[ lime ] describe yourself as a character / mix of characters you've always related to the most.

minor npc in the protagonist of the series' life that's like. just a passing face, but has an entire life beyond saving the world that makes actually saving the world all the more meaningful by way of their story coming together with every other npc's to weave this feel of a world that's actually alive.

also! unnoticeable character, perhaps, but the protagonist of their own life :) slfkjfd sorry. zelda might've been a core part of my personality since childhood but mp100 changed my brain chemistry on a molecular level at ~sixteen. hard for me to leave its truisms and themes alone

[ azure ] is there a specific character or type of character you want to write but never have? why?

there are specific characters i've been hankering to write but just don't think my writing style will do them justice in terms of narrative voices OR don't feel very confident in my interpretation of those narrative voices in the first place, yeah! reigen arataka from mp100, kazuha kaedehara from genpact (who wouldn't be affiliated with the rpc at all now that i no longer play the game, which is another hurdle), and link from albw to name a few.

there's also the issue of my time and energy, and other writers' interest in interacting. maybe one day i'll bring one of these to the fold, but it won't be anytime soon sdlfkdjf

[ cherry ] what is one thing you love about yourself?

hmm. i'm very proud of my progress in terms of mental health recovery! dunno if that's something i'd say i love about myself though sflkdjf so maybe how in-depth i can go in terms of character analyses? at least for characters that i feel are really understated or don't often get to shine in fandom communities and such. i do love a majority of my muse interpretations (outside validation's alway nice ofc) — i wouldn't be able to write them otherwise!

[ cerulean ] what is your favorite (type of) character to write?

i know the person who sent this in wants me to say the truth so here it is slfkjdkl i really like writing characters who did not get the resolution or healing they should've gotten from their trauma in their canons. i like exploring what that does to them and what healing might look or not look like for them. i especially loveeee collecting dynamics for them because that's ultimately what heals everyone, isn't it? that outside support and care :) it's cathartic to write, and i hope it's meaningful to read for my writing partners when we really get into the nitty gritty of it!

[ apricot ] what do you think your life will be like in ten years?

happy? happy. i don't tend to mull on the specifics so much. though i'd like to think i'd still be writing, at least! there are some other really personal things i'm not super comfortable with sharing in a public space, but to the one who sent this in: i hope i'll still be with you. i hope we'll get to be together not just in our hearts. i hope we'll have physically built up lives of our own ♡ sorry for getting disgustingly sappy but i love my loveliest lady!! slfkjdl

[ fuchsia ] bonus round: angst or fluff? one-liners or paras? plotting or winging it? memes or starter calls? single muse or multimuse?

i like reading and writing both, with a slightly heavier inclination towards fluff! paras unless it's shenanigans. i vibe with both, but work better with prior plotting! either is good and i do not mind them! i do have a preference for running multimuses now just because it makes it less of a hassle when you've got multiple blorbos bouncing around in your head, though love interacting with both!

what are your favorite things about Tombraxas?

Aaaaah i love love tombraxas i have so many hcs about them

i think their contrasting backgrounds is one of the most interesting things about them, like tom is dirt poor but abraxas is filthy rich and i love the enemies to lovers aspect of it i think it’s super fun

then i love that tom would be able to show that despite being a half blood he can still excel at school and is wayy better at duelling and just ugh the animosity would be so good

and also my favourite thing is probably tom being lucius’ stepdad it’s so funny to me for some reason help meee maybe id write about lucius finding out that voldemort was almost his legal stepfather lolll

i love the idea that abraxas was more laidback than lucius, and so he would probably find several ways to annoy tom during hogwarts.

abraxas and his white albino peacocks ugghhhh such a great addition. Tom would find it so ridiculous and over the top but i think he’d secretly like it and thats so cute i think ahaha

GMMTV 2024 Part 1 roundup :)

it's been a day, i've had some time to gather my thoughts, so i wanted to get them all down in one spot. (Only really gonna be talking about the shows I plan on watching, in order that they were announced!)

1. We Are the series

aka ALL my favourite couples in one show ahhh 😭😭 i was so happy when the trailer started, you mean i get winnysatang marcpawin pondphuwin AND aouboom all in one??? i wanna be a bit cautious seeing it's directed by p'new and i'm not a huge fan of his work, but i'm super excited for this regardless :] looks like a cute romcom à la futs, which i rlly loved <3 i WILL be hyping this up no matter how it turns out :D

2. Only Boo!

rookie leads !!! strong msp vibes with this one (which i'm not opposed to at all, and i'm pretty sure is what they're trying to emulate) it looks rlly cute?? i know keen is from proj alpha so at least i'm not worried about the singing/dancing for once 😅😅 and we get aun in the side cp!! and louis dance role!! honestly this could turn out rlly good and i'm gonna tune in to at least the first few eps :)

3. Peaceful Property

The second tay slapped new in the face with the sandwich and jan instantly had her camera out, i was 100% sold. but fr, i love horror comedy and ghost stuff, and we get it with taynew + mook and jan!! all the dynamics look like so much fun and i already know i'm gonna enjoy this a lot

4. My Golden Blood

OH MY GOD THIS SHOW i went for a dinner break during the performances, then came back and was planning on just quickly skimming through the livestream to catch up. well, the first 20 seconds of the trailer played, and once i realised what was happening (JOSSGAWIN BL HELLOOOO????) i had to pause and faceplant on my bed for a solid 5 minutes to process it. vampire series would have already had me hooked, but jossgawin??? looking super gritty?? mond evil vampire moment?? neo with a baseball bat (in his sand era🤨)?? gawin my fav in another lead role??? Also the bloody kiss !!!!! guys i'm dead i'm literally writing this from the grave (hoping to meet my own hot vampire guy) Basically i dont care if the cgi's a bit questionable or if the story's cliche, i WILL be eating this up, be ready for it to be my whole personality

5. Kidnap the series

OHM!!! my day one!!! 😭😭 so he was hanging out with leng a couple months ago and i was wondering ahaha what if...? AND NOW !!! WE ACTUALLY GOT OHMLENG !!! i'm rlly happy to see him back to bl, and i like how he stars opposite lots of different ppl (just like gawin). The concept actually seems rlly interesting + more mature, leng is gorgeous and seems like a good actor, and the tied hands sleeping scene totally had me sold on the pairing <33 also ohm squared siblings !!! i rlly like ohm tpk :) and PAPANG WITH A GUN WOOOHHH i said i needed more papang on my screens and my wishes have been answered 🙏🙏 i'm gonna be so annoying about this show as well once it airs ahjskdjfh

[5.5. special mention: Summer Night]

gmm knew Exactly what they were doing with those first 30 seconds 😭😭 i was rlly getting hyped up for a dunkphuwin show but ofc it was too good to be true <//3 not gonna be watching this, but i'm still holding out for a joylada poly show at some point... pls gmm 🙏🥺🥺

6. Wandee Goodday

Okay so I saw the GreatInn lore a couple months ago (guys pls read it here it's insane), and i didn't think too much of it because it did seem kinda random, BUT HERE WE ARE WOOOHHHH this show looks so good??? Great with braids <3 ployphach <3 podd homewrecker era <3 mature bl with adult characters <3 directed by golf tanwarin <3 and even more good things!! also i have no idea what the song in the trailer is but it goes so hard, rlly suits the show. i'm all for this pairing and the whole show looks like so much fun Also thorfluke!!! (thor out here collecting all the flukes - thorgawin for 2025??) loved the situp scene and i'm rlly vibing with this pair <3 another show that will be all i talk about once it airs

7. High School Frenemy

God what is that name 💀💀 definitely one where just a literal translation of the thai name would have probably been better names aside, sky and nani !!!! i rlly liked sky in some other shows, and i'm loving the tension between the two. lol i had ohmsky and ohmnani on my gmm24 bingo, i guess we just got it without the middle man 😂😂 also i see they're pulling a double savage with the bromance toeing the fine line of bl hajskdj honestly i don't mind that at all, i think sky and nani have good chemistry and it doesn't seem like there's a random female side wedged in for drama. also so many of my favs as side characters, i'm happy to see them <3 overall, i'll probably watch it if i'm not too busy when it's airing (or just bingewatch it after)

8. My Love Mix-Up!

Gem4th series announced last, who's surprised lmao. this looks very cute!! i know nothing about the source material, but gemini and fourth are great actors, and i trust p'au's directing. i was hoping for something a bit more mature for them (like heartliming was) because i think they're so good in those heavier scenes, but i rlly don't mind this either !! i've been on a kick for less high school bls lately though, but i had the same thought for msp and that ended up being one of my fav shows of all time, so i'm not gonna go into this with any preconceived notions :) gonna tune in for this, no doubt gem4th will serve like they always do

Overall, i was rlly pleased with the lineup this time around. Lots of shows i'm rlly excited for !! a bunch of my favs didn't show up even once which... yeah, but i'm holding out for part 2 🤞🤞 :)

Aw, thanks for asking! Some of my favourites may be a surprise to some people, since a lot of shows I think of as favourites are older or less mainstream. There's quite a few that I watched before I ever had any sort of social media, so while I hold them dear in my heart and think of them often, I don't always talk about them as much, so this will be fun to answer!

The Nonary Games: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (999) - I'm still mad at this one because I accidentally deleted all my progress after getting 3 of the multiple endings, and the puzzles are hard so I haven't taken the time to redo it. I debated not putting it on this list but I put so much time and effort into the gameplay (I had like 8 doublesided pages of notes for the puzzles and clues I picked up through the game) and I really do love the story

Orihime giggles. Ichigo looks more disgruntled. It matches perfect with the lopsided absolutely cute blue shark hat on his hair.

“I look ridiculous.” He says.

“No! you look perfect!” She disagrees. "After all, Kurosaki-kun and sharks are very alike.” He also looks a tinyyy bit ridiculous, but she won't say that.

Ichigo snorts as he takes off the hat and puts it back. A shame, really. “Because I look intimidating to people?”

“A bit of that.” She says, smiling. “But also because sharks and Kurosaki-kun are often misunderstood as scary and intimidating when they can be so cute!”

"I wouldn't say sharks are cute."

Orihime gasps. "Take that back! They so are cute!" As proof of evidence, she grabs a tiny pulshie shark off the shelf and shoves in his face. "See!"

"Yes, of course." Ichigo says, rolling his eyes. "A shark plushie designed to be cute would be cute."

"They're modeled directly from sharks!" Now, Orihime knows she's just saying anything.

Ichigo sceptically squints at the squishie. "You're telling me....sharks have... big eyes like this?"

"...They took some liberaties."

Ichigo laughs. "Alright, I'll give you that. C'mon lets go. I think its time for penguin show."

"Already?!"

"It's been an hour, Inoue.”

Time can go so fast when she's with him, she thinks.

They leave the gift shop, buying the shark hat and plushie in the end, even if Ichigo swears down he will be not wearing the hat. It's for plushie.

Orihime laughs as she nods agreeably. She thinks that the hat might be too big for the plushie, though.

This is not the first time Orihime been to an aquarium together with Ichigo, though then it wasn't really Ichigo and Orihime but their whole group. It feels different this time.

Inluding more stomach butterflies as Ichigo causually weaves their fingers together. The warmth of his hand is devilishly dangerous! To her heart!

Despite how its been a while since they've started dating, there's still a lot Orihime can't get used to. She's felt the full force of Ichigo's love but this — the echo of ichigo's love being the same as hers is completely new.

"That was so much fun!" Orihime says, after the penguin show, as they are returning back home. She leans up to him to whisper, "I think Happy Feet was my favourite."

"The one that kept tripping over himself?" Ichigo says, laughter in his voice.

"Yes! He kept messing up the routine, ahaha. I think he did on purpose — wanted to see his keepers flail around."

He snorts, as he squeezes their joined hands and tugs it into his pocket. Orihime's heart skips a beat.

”…It’s nearly dark.” Ichigo comments, out of the blue. It’s not even that close to sun down. She notices the tips of his ears have turned red.

“Do you…want to stay over?” He asks.

Oh.

She stayed over before and doubts that Ichigo means anything else by that. His family is also home! But the way he asked her — the shyness in his posture and words make her feel weak.

“I’d…like that.” Orihime says, shifting slightly closer to him.

She doesn’t want the time with him to be over yet.

YAMICHAR in the final arc

At the end of the day, this blog is still dedicated to Yami and Charlotte. So of course everything that's happening in the story, I'm gonna relate it somehow to my OTP of OTPs. Some possibilities that I think could happen during the final arc, in order of best-case to worst-case scenarios:

1. Yami and Charlotte are totally fine, indestructible, and kick paladin ass together.

The best I can hope for as a shipper is that they somehow avoid the raging death flags and manage to win, together, then finally have that adult conversation over tea about what it is they've got going on.

They fight together like they did during the Elf arc, except this time it's much better since Charlotte will be in full-control of her body. We get proper development of their relationship during battle, either Yami surpassing his limits because her life is in danger, or Charlotte overcoming her insecurities about not being strong enough to stand by him, because goddamn it, they're knocking paladins left and right, showing these knights how it's done (or both, honestly?).

I want Charlotte to unlock the full extent of her powers, realizing that loving someone isn't a sign of weakness, but is a source of strength. Watching Yami fight his hardest because he loves his squad finally gets her to see what it is that makes him so strong, and it's because of his heart. That in spite of the pain he's faced in his life, Yami chooses to love the people who matter to him—it just so happens that his love language is kicking the asses of those who hurt the people he cares about.

Best-best case scenario??? A kiss. But that's just never gonna happen now ahaha.

2. Yami turns into a monster

There's something about that devil heart... Tabata wouldn't have put it there if it isn't important, right? And Yami being a punching bag key character of the series, there has to be a breaking point.

This man's entire life has been a tragedy. He had an abusive father, a sister who was coerced into killing his family and then choosing to shoulder the blame on her behalf, washing ashore on a strange country then being treated with racism, looked down on by members of society in spite of his achievements; now slowly losing the people he loves....

No wonder this man has so many vices. I'd be super stressed too, if this was my life. It's honestly a wonder how Yami's worst habit is just smoking??

So yeah, this seems most likely to me rn. I feel like this development would absolutely destroy Asta. That this world is so broken that even the seemingly infallible Captain Yami has fallen victim to it. Also, the role reversal in the Elf arc would be interesting; Charlotte trying to get Yami to snap out of it along with the Black Bulls? What a scrumptious idea.

3. They both die

Now listen, this isn't my favourite outcome, but it's still not as bad as the next one. If both of them die, I'd of course be devastated, but at least neither one has to live the rest of their life alone & wondering what could have been.

To me, it would be better to face death with hands adjoined than to be left pining for a ghost, especially if it was Charlotte who survives and not Yami. That would just be beyond cruel, I think. But this is of course, my personal opinion.

4. One of them dies

I love a good angsty fic, but I would absolutely be crushed if only one of them dies. Sorry if people think that this is childish. I think if BC had established itself as a manga with high stakes from the get-go, then I would kind of understand, but one of the things I liked about the series is the minimal-amount of deaths so far?? Idk.... I'm just fiercely protective of my fav characters (and I honestly love a lot of them). So yeah, either Yami or Char dying would leave a bad taste in my mouth.

I would also like to add that Charlotte dying to spur Yami's devil heart transformation would absolutely be a worst-case scenario for me. We've built her character up for so long and then at the end she becomes fodder for one of the male protags??? I'd be livid lol

Bonus Super Duper Crack Theory That Has A 0.00001% Chance Of Happening:

When Charlotte and Yami had dinner to discuss her curse, she said that 'The curse had altered the shape of her soul'. And her being cursed has hindered her from fully mastering her magic.

Additionally, it was explained that all curses are born from Megicula. In her fight, she had combined the knowledge of magic runes from the Heart Kingdom to modify her curse, allowing her to wield both blue and red roses.

We also know that Lucius's power involves the transformation of souls. He explains that 'The soul is the source of human life, spirit, and magic.' He can manipulate someone's soul and implant directives that they cannot disobey. BUT we did see that Sister Lily's resolve falters as she fights against Asta, so Lucius's magic isn't as infallible as he believes it to be. Therefore, his magic can be negated by anti-magic OR by strong emotion.

So what the hell am I rambling on about? Well, what if Charlotte becomes a devil along with Yami? Would Lucius's magic work on her, as her soul has already been affected by another devil (Megicula)? Being cursed changed the quality of her magic, yet in the Spade arc, Charlotte was able to work around a spell that altered her damn SOUL. I think it would be pretty sick for Charlotte to fully embrace the darkness of the devil's curse on her metaphorical heart. Plus, you know, Devil!Yami and Devil!Charlotte kicking "angel" ass is sexy to think about.

So I first want to say I adore your writing. You are one of the few authors that I've found that not only has amazing technical skill, but somehow manages to laser focus on EXACTLY what I look for in a story. I don't often reread stories (unless I'm doing a review) simply because there's so much I want to read, but yours are some of the few stories I come back to on my rainy days. When nothing else is motivating me to read, your work gives me that kick.

Reading Efnisien and Gary's story (or whichever Underline story gets updated) is absolutely one of my weekly highlights. It is also such an interesting experience for me as a mental health professional because sometimes I'll read through some of the stuff the Hillview staff does and I'll just be like 'oh no friend we absolutely do NOT say that to a client' lol (then again I live in the US which is dystopian nightmare and worked at some facilities that are probably run more like the other omega rehab centers but well what can you do about it 🤪).

Efnisien too, is honestly probably one of favorite original characters in a long time, and honestly I sometimes have to take a step back because he reminds me so much of some of the boys I used to work with (granted Efnisien is an adult and I worked with teens mostly).

All this as to keep up the fantastic work, and I can't wait for the next chapter!!

I'm so glad you're enjoying the writing! *bounces* The rereading is huge, especially if it's something you never do. Whenever folks tell me they reread it's like the best feeling. I love rereading particular stories (for comfort, because I want to just experience certain feelings again) they end up becoming my faves and just... idk how to explain how that feels when it happens but AHHH it just makes me want to write more stories that can do this for folks

Underline the Black has been awesome to write. Tbh there's been a few mental healthcare professionals over the years who have engaged with my writing! It's been interesting to see the different forms of like... interaction and engagement, the way a job / career can influence how one sort of interfaces with the stories and the characters. I imagine it can be pretty frustrating sometimes, like watching a medical show when you're a doctor and being like 'NO THAT'S NOT HOW IT- *huffs*' ahaha

Thankfully I'm writing a fictional dystopian universe so I can do what I like (I mean even if it was contemporary and set in modern times, I could still do what I like, I just think the suspension of disbelief would be a tougher sell eep) :D

It's funny to me because I've been on the other end - I've been a client of many mental healthcare professionals on and off for about 20 years. I remember the first time I said I'd fire someone like Dr Gary as a therapist (from Falling Falling Stars) if he was my therapist, because fuck no, too pushy, too overbearing, and it's kind of interesting to me to write things I wouldn't want to experience, or that aren't okay, but that make sense within the logic of the world, or for the logic of the characters.

Just know that when some folks are going 'no that's not okay!' I'm also like 'it's really not but damn it's fun to write.' Ehehehe
