Croissant and Egg anyone? 243 Ida, was discovered on 29th September 1884 by Johann Palisa. 243 Ida is an stony type asteroid in the main asteroid belt – between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The Galileo spacecraft passed by Ida on its route to Jupiter (it was only the second asteroid to be observed by Galileo) and discovered it had a natural satellite – as a result, 243 Ida was the first asteroid discovered to have its own moon.

Ida's mass is relatively small for an astronomical object (at about 40 million billion kg), which creates a gravitational field of about 0.5cm per second per second at the surface. As a result, an astronaut could jump from one end of Ida to the other – although the gravitation field is also highly uneven due to the asteroid's “croissant shape”. Dactyl (officially (243) Ida I Dactyl) was discovered in 1994 after investigation of 47 images from the Galileo spacecraft taken the previous year. Dactyl has been described as both “egg shaped” and “remarkably spherical” and is thought to originate from the same parent body as Ida, or perhaps it is ejecta from an impact on Ida as their compositions are similar. Banded Iron Formations – an insight into early life on Earth

While the earth formed some 4.5 billion years ago in the Hadean Eon, most of the rocks we see nowadays are much younger than that. Looking at changing rocks through time we can see a number of distinct environments and time periods represented, such as the impressive exposures of white chalk from the Cretaceous Period, but relatively few opportunities to study the very oldest rocks on the planet remain. On Earth, through the combined actions of metamorphism, erosion and remelting of rocks, Hadean rocks are in very short supply. More samples exist from Earth’s next Eon, the Archaean, including fascinating examples like these that imply a very different world. Banded iron formations (BIFs for short) are distinct, layered, and often heavily deformed rocks. Typical BIFs show repeating, consecutive, iron-rich and iron-poor layers; bands of a few millimetres to centimetres of black, silver or grey iron oxides such as haematite (Fe2O3) or magnetite (Fe3O4) alternate with layers of sediment lacking in iron, like shale or chert that are often red in colour, producing a beautiful layered effect. These formations are therefore an excellent indicator of the Earth’s early environmental history.

About 2.4 billion years ago, oxygen first appeared in Earth's atmosphere, the product of organisms called cyanobacteria which first developed the process of photosynthesis around that time. Prior to this, oxygen generally reacted with dissolved iron or organic matter in the oceans, but once these sources became oversaturated O2 started to fill the atmosphere; this is often referred to as the Great Oxygenation Event, the first accumulation of biologically induced oxygen.

Without oxygen in the atmosphere, iron does something we're not familiar with today - it actually dissolves in water and can be held in the oceans like salt. Once oxygen began building up in the atmosphere, suddenly all this iron became insoluble, started precipitating out and sinking to the sea floor. This appears to have been a periodic process; periods of abundant dissolved iron alternated with periods of limited dissolved iron and formation of cherts and shales. Once enough oxygen was present to use up the iron dissolved in the oceans, BIFs could no longer form, so the planet no longer makes them today. Their age usually means that they have been subject to a number of deformation processes, producing beautiful folded effects in specimens. Banded iron formations truly are a unique insight into early planetary history. ZM

[KHR fic, writing notes] Team Mom Varia Edition

I SWEAR we will get to Dino at some point. I’ve actually written the part where Dino first mets Tsuna already and I am so impatient to get to that part of the story!

Lussuria’s use of -chan is to be affectionate with Tsuna and to annoy Squalo. If you have thoughts on whether you like it or I over do it, I’m open to hearing them. I’m a bit indecisive on it.

“there isn’t an ounce of subtlety in the brat’s nature” Squalo is the pot calling the kettle black; and Bel grows to being better at being sneaky than Squalo in time. Better than Squalo isn’t saying all that much though.

Squalo differentiates between Tsuna and Bel as kid and brat most of the time.

”Aren’t you cute” I realized when going back and forth trying to find a spot in my master doc that Lussaria says this to both Tsuna and Squalo when he meets them for the first time. I didn’t intend for that but I like it now that I noticed it.

In my headcanon, Squalo was already in the Varia when Xanxus decided he wanted to take it over...and Xanxus already had Lussuria at that point.

Random Backstory because we get so little on the characters and I can’t resist adding more women in the background at least since it will be a while before I can get the story to the KHR canon ladies. SO, yes, Squalo’s Grandma is a badass bisexual lady who rules her sword-wielding family with an iron fist. Not a literal metal fist, like in the case of Squalo.

And come on, who hasn’t considered where does Lussuria come from? And I decided his eye thing is familial hence, Quattrocchi aka four eyes. And why Sicilian? Because my background sound was the Sicily episode of Huang’s World.

I haven’t actually read the novels so I’m making up stuff about Ottavio to suit my story needs

Also haven’t seen The Godfather but I still manage to make a reference. Guess it goes with the territory.
