hi!!! i'm sorry to bother but i thought that kanesan was the zachou? then someone said that yasusada was the zachou? but isn't tomoe the captain? wouldn't that make him the zachou? because kashuu was captain and he became the zachou right?

Hiya! :D It’s no bother at all! It’s always interesting to look at the dynamics of the cast of the Musical Touken Ranbu, and though I’ve briefly discussed it with friends, your Ask gave me a reason to really dig into the zachou system for Toumyu xD

Because this response got kind of long, please find the rest of the discussion below the cut.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “ZACHOU” AND “CAPTAIN”

The titles of “zachou” and “captain”, or also known as “taichou”, refer to two different roles.

“Zachou” loosely translates to company leader, and this title is given to the person who leads the cast, staff and crew, collectively known as the stage company, behind the scenes in real life as well as onstage. Bringing people together and building the relationships between company members, taking the lead in keeping up the company’s energy and spirits (which is especially important during long-running stage plays, like the Musical Touken Ranbu), and acting as a leader to the company through their performances in rehearsals and onstage are some of the responsibilities that fall on the shoulders of the zachou.

Being zachou is both a huge responsibility and an honour. For younger actors/actresses, they are usually celebrated when they take on the role of zachou for the first time, which is also known as “hatsu zachou” (this is also because this might tie in to them becoming stars or lead actors/actresses in a production for the first time), and if they are really young and inexperienced, they might share the role with a more experienced cast member, in an official or unofficial capacity. Usually, the star or lead actor/actress of the production will be given the role; therefore, checking the acting credits is one of the methods that fans use to predict who the zachou for a particular production is.

The “zachou system” in the Musical Touken Ranbu (henceforth known as Toumyu) is one that changes according to the needs of the cast and crew for the different productions. Officially, the franchise doesn’t have a designated zachou, but further discussion on the different productions will show how the zachou system is applied in the franchise.

On the other hand, the title of “captain” is an in-story title that is given to the Touken Danshi leading the team that is sent to the front lines for battle. This is based on the Touken Ranbu game dynamics where each party that is sent to the front lines would have a captain leading them and, in battle, the captain also gains bonus experience points (the points for the Captain Bonus is approximately 1.5 times more than the average number of points gained by the rest of the party members).

Although there are cases where the captain of the Touken Danshi party in Toumyu is also the zachou, this doesn’t necessarily apply across the board to all productions. Which is why even though Tomoegata Naginata (Kiyama Haruki) is the captain in “Toumyu ~Musubi no Hibiki, Hajimari no Ne~” (henceforth known as MusuHaji), Haruki isn’t the zachou.

As for who the zachou is in MusuHaji, this will be further discussed in the section on the zachou(s) and captains of Toumyu.

THE ZACHOU(S) AND CAPTAINS OF THE MUSICAL TOUKEN RANBU

As mentioned previously, Toumyu doesn’t have an official zachou for each production, or to be more specific, they don’t make official announcements regarding who the zachou is for the different productions in the franchise. However, based on the Tweets/blogs and comments made by the cast and crew, it has been revealed that there are actors who are officially acknowledged as zachou in the different productions.

As you’ve mentioned “Kashuu being captain and zachou” in your initial Ask, I’ve listed below the different zachou(s) and captains in Toumyu for each of the productions to, hopefully, provide a better look at the bigger picture of the zachou/captain system in Toumyu. However, because the information is compiled from cast comments and blogs/Tweets, I’ve chosen to exclude productions which I wasn’t able to get much information on (that said, if anyone has information about the productions that I haven’t listed here, please feel free to let me know :D)

Trial Performance / Atsukashiyama Ibun

Zachou: Kuroba Mario (Mikazuki Munechika) and Sato Ryuji (Kashuu Kiyomitsu)

Captain: Kashuu Kiyomitsu (Sato Ryuji)

The information about the zachou(s) of “Toumyu ~Tsuwamono Domo ga Yume no Ato~” isn’t official, so please take it with a grain of salt. I’ve just included it in this post because this is something that is widely said in fandom. If anyone has a more conclusive source of information about this, please feel free to let me know :D

Zachou: Torigoe Yuki (Yamatonokami Yasusada)

Captain: Tomoegata Naginata (Kiyama Haruki)

[BONUS] Sato Ryuji as the “soutaichou” of Toumyu

The title “soutaichou” is loosely translated to “captain-commander” or “head captain” and is a term that is used to refer to the person who leads the captains.

This title is used by both the fans and the cast/crew of Toumyu to refer to Kashuu Kiyomitsu who was appointed as the captain (“taichou”) to Team Sanjou in the “Trial Performance” and “Atsukashiyama Ibun”, and was the first Touken Danshi to officially be appointed captain in the Musical Touken Ranbu franchise.

In real life, it is a title that is used to refer to Sato Ryuji (the actor who plays Kashuu Kiyomitsu). He was considered to be one of the zachou(s) for the “Trial Performance” and “Atsukashiyama Ibun”, and was officially the zachou for “Bakumatsu Tenrouden”. During musical productions where he wasn’t present, other actors have taken on the mantle of zachou for the individual productions; therefore, he has been given the title of “soutaichou” as reference to his role as the general company leader for the entire franchise.

Although Ryuji uses this title jokingly to refer to himself, the cast and crew of Toumyu have taken it up, and do actually refer to him as “soutaichou”.
