Battle Modern Master Plan No. 16 - The Boeing Pegasus Hydrofoil. Only six of these were made and they were in service from 1977 to 30 July 1993. Only one, USS Aries, still exists and it is at a Hydrofoil Museum in Missouri.

I feel like early season Riker isn't actually career-driven just because he wants the captain's chair. He's also attracted to having responsibility for the wellbeing of a large number of people, and given some of the career choices he makes in early TNG, he may actually find that aspect more appealing than just the privileges of command.
Consider his position in Encounter At Farpoint. Immediately prior to this, he'd been the first officer of the Hood, an Excelsior-class ship. He'd turned down the command of the Drake in order to be the XO of the Enterprise-D.
It's not clear how much of a crew the Drake had. In The Arsenal of Freedom, it's described as being a light cruiser and a few beta canon sources say it was a Wambundu-class ship specifically. Even the extended beta canon sources tend to not commit to a particular crew count, but given the size they're describing seems to be about half the size of the Intrepid-class (e.g. the Voyager), I'd suggest it'd probably be somewhere around 75 or 100.
The next year, Riker turned down the command of the Aries, a Renaissance-class ship. Much like with the Drake, it's not really clear in primary canon how many people were onboard. I found one estimate putting the crew count around 240, and given some of the size estimates I've seen elsewhere that seems fair.
The thing both these ships have in common is that they're both significantly smaller than the Galaxy-class Enterprise-D and the Excelsior-class USS Hood. (The DS9 tech manual describes the Excelsior-class as having a crew of around 750 in the 24th century.) The actual amount of responsibility involved in commanding these ships might be similar to what Riker had as a department head earlier in his career, and in his mind, this could easily be seen as a fairly large step down.
Really, the place where this analysis starts to fall apart is when he's offered the command of the Melbourne in The Best of Both Worlds, Part I. While this choice is later somewhat vindicated because it was destroyed by the Borg cube, it was an Excelsior-class ship, which means it was probably a fairly similar level of responsibility for Riker.
Yes, it had a smaller crew, but also, there are certain responsibilities that fall on the captain and not the first officer that he would have adopted once he went onboard. And yes, there are ships with a crew compliment between what the Excelsior- and Galaxy-classes have, but there aren't that many; especially when you consider the number that were actually in service at that point. Riker would have been aware of that and he would have been aware that his options at that point may have been quite literally either take command of the Melbourne, hold out for a Galaxy-class of his own, or perhaps never have his own command.
However, I feel like by that point Riker's desire for a command of his own had waned. This is explicitly canon in The Best of Both Worlds and this is the first time he'd realised it had happened. By this point, Riker had started to see the Enterprise as home.
I think this would still broadly fit with Riker being a guy who was always generally more attracted to the responsibility aspects of command more than the actual rank, though. In terms of actual responsibilities and how much depended on him specifically, being the first officer of the Enterprise really was as much or more responsibility than commanding a smaller starship. Someone who was attracted to that level of responsibility probably would start to feel right at home there.
In fact, the moment he does settle for a smaller ship--the Luna-class USS Titan--was straight after he married Troi. This was a ship with a crew of around 350, but also, he got offered it at a point in his life where the responsibilities of his personal life (e.g., maintaining a healthy relationship with his wife and the early stages of raising children) were becoming as large and important in his life as his professional responsibilities. This is different from what he had before because prior to this, his relationship with his father (apparently the only family member he really knew) was strained enough that he didn't really have a family life, and most of his relationships up until that point had been short lived.
This is an aspect of Riker's personality that I really wish the writers had made explicit. It's not like there weren't chances for them to expand upon this. Second Chances could have easily have had a scene where Will Riker and Tom Riker discuss the merits of commanding a ship, only for both to come to the conclusion that they were more attracted to the responsibility than the rank and position, for example. Even in The Best of Both Worlds, when Riker was discussing his career with Troi in Ten Forward, she could have easily have responded with, "Are you sure it's a fourth pip you want? Are you sure it isn't just the responsibility of having hundreds of people depending on your decisions? If it's the latter, you already have that here just as much as you'd have it on a ship you personally commanded."
Maybe there'll be something about this in Picard's third season, we'll wait and see. I sorta suspect there won't be though, because I feel like there's probably gonna be enough other stuff going on that there won't really be time for that kind of scene.

This Week’s Horrible-Scopes
It’s time for this week’s Horrible-Scopes! So for those of you that know your Astrological Signs, cool! If not, just pick one, roll a D12, or just make it up as you go along. It really doesn’t matter.
Since you all made a mockery of last week’s theme, we’ve decided that there will be no theme.
Aries
According to “The Cube Rule of Food”, A Sandwich is defined as having independent structural cabs on opposing sides to the filling; for instance a hamburger. HOWEVER a Club Sandwich, which is a double-decker BLT with poultry and an additional slab of bread in the middle, is correctly defined as… “Cake”. Have fun eating your BLT Cake this week.
Taurus
Start the countdown and buy your supplies now. It’s less than 250 days until Halloween and you need to make a splash this year. Plan on throwing a party, themed around Historical Figures - and you’ll be Amelia Earhart…. And when your guests arrive, you be in Hawaii.
Gemini
Your capacity to remember commercial jingles from the 70’s is only as impressive with how localized those same commercials are. Nobody knows what the Milford Plaza is, or where Puppy City is, or what discounts on slacks are available at M&K. Turn all that knowledge into a trivia game!
Cancer Moon-Child
Yes, you can play a flight sim, or space sim, or racing sim with a mouse and keyboard, but they’re all more fun with a dedicated controller. But for you freaks driving Train Sims… those dedicated controllers look like something out of a Minuteman Missile Silo. Y’all are FREAKS!
Leo
Look up into the night sky. Somewhere, about 200 km over your head at over 27,000 kph, there’s a hunk of metal that, upon impact, would turn you into a finer mist than DOOM’s BFG 9000 could ever hope to accomplish. The next time you start feeling romantic, just remember it’s up there, waiting patiently while traveling three times faster than any bullet on Earth… just waiting for you to get into space so it can bite you.
Virgo
Have you watched “Smokey and the Bandit”? You better not watch Burt Reynolds in that movie because he just does NOT know how to operate a CB Radio Microphone. Ok, Ok, so. Just watch how he talks into it - he grips the mic switch and Never.. Lets… Go. CB’s Don’t Work That Way! Jerry shoulda taught you better!
Libra
“Loop-DUJH, hohm-MLEEJ, Loo-TEHB, Garg-HMEH!” If you’d taken up learning Klingon like we told you to LAST week, you’d be laughing right now. You uncultured “Peh-TAHQ”!
Scorpio
Where did we go wrong with you, Aquarius? We’ve tried for months, seriously months, to be nicer to you. We bent the rules of the cosmos and worked on making you feel more included and supported and what d… OH! Sorry, Scorpio. Mistook you for Aquarius there. Forget about it. You just… go get an ophthalmological examination scheduled this week.
Sagittarius
Lemme screw you all up. The original USS Enterprise on Star Trek should have looked more like the Reliant from The Wrath of Khan. The only reason it looked the way it did was because Walt Jeffries had the design upside-down across the table to Gene Roddenberry and he approved it that way. So turn your best work upside-down and someone else will stamp their approval on it.
Capricorn
There is a company that sells pillows with specialized photo printing on them. You know what the hottest seller is? A picture of a Samsung Galaxy Note 7. It’s the perfect puffy size and shape. Why couldn’t you come up with something that fun to sell? Or maybe you can. So the same thing, only… make it self-heating for the winter months. And add a Bluetooth Speaker in it.
Aquarius
Yeeaahhh. Sorry about the mix up there. Hey, look. We’re still in your star sign, so-o-o-o… eeeeyeeeaaahhhh. (*Long Exhale*)” Look, we all know how this is gunna end. Neither one of us is going to budge on this ‘Scope until the heat death of the Universe, so. Let’s just agree not to get into each other's way down the stairs. OK?
Pisces
Here’s the naughty one that was held over from last week. Buy a container of K-Y Jelly, find the consumer helpline phone number on it and give a call. Let the person know that you are impressed with the spreadability of the product, but dissatisfied with the flavor, requesting information on any berry-flavoured versions. Just make sure you ONLY do this on April 1st!
And THOSE are your Horrible-Scopes for this week! Remember if you liked what you got, we’re obviously not working hard enough at these. BUT! If you want a better or nastier one for your own sign or someone else’s, all you need to do to bribe me is just Let Me Know! These will be posted online at the end of each week via Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and Discord.

Synopsis:
Almost six weeks had been passed and the Federation has no notice of the six-member crew of the Starship Aries. They should be on an expedition on planet Lactra VII. The USS Enterprise is assigned to track down the missing science officers. A landing party are beamed to the surface –where the abandoned ship is located-- in search of the captain's log.
At the briefing room, Captain James T. Kirk, First Officer Mister Spock, Doctor Leonard McCoy and Engineer Montgomery Scott are reunited to listen to the last entry of the log made by the Lieutenant Commander Tom Markel. The captain of the starship Aries took the drastic decision to leave the vessel with the other two remaining crew members 32 minutes after loosing contact with the first three officers beamed down at the surface of the planet. A desperate measure that goes against the Federation laws.
Tumblr media
Captain Kirk inquires his science officer, Spock about what to expect on Lactra VII. He reports that the planet is class M, with an Earth-like atmosphere, capable to sustain human life. Spock has no further information on the planet's life forms. Lieutenant Mr. Arex is performing a scan, but it will take too much time. Kirk orders both Spock and McCoy to be beamed down with him to the last known coordinates the Commander Markel and his crew took.
The landing party were landed very closely to being boiled to death in a small pool of hot spring waters on a marshy environment. It is very unusual those bodies of water could exist on the current planetary conditions. From the lake, a big red, one-eyed monster emerges. It seems it is going to attack the officers. The captain orders to his two companions to stun it with the phasers. The trio knocked it out.
Tumblr media
Now in a desert region, Kirk, Spock and McCoy face another giant creature. A dinosaur-like one with three toes an a blue face. They also shoot to stun the monster on the underside of the neck. When the beast fell down to the floor, Bones get trapped by its tail. The captain and his first officer tried to unsuccessfully to lift the tail. They freed the doctor by digging him out.
Tumblr media
Spock finds that the creature is very similar to the ones they found on planet Canopus III. The desert-like environment is the same to that planet located light years ahead from they are now.
The officers are now in a more comfortable place than a desert. A rain forest. Spock notices and question the fact of how much two different environments could exist so much cose one to another. Kirk communicates with the Enterprise. There, Scotty reports the captain that the have found a large concentration of life-forms at 98.5 kilometers north east from the place the trio is located. It seems to be a city or a gathering place. But there is no signal coming from there.
The science officer analysed the water and find out that it is too pure. Something very suspicious. Kirk asserts telling it is too good to be true. It seems to be terraformed and it implies there is intelligent life.
A flock of dragon-like flying creatures –like the dragons of Maravel-- are approaching. The trio of officers tried to stun them with their phasers, but before they were hit, the flying beasts crashed with an invisible force field and fly off.
Tumblr media
Suddenly, three giant slug-like creatures appear to trap Kirk, Spock and McCoy with their tentacles. Those enormous aliens take them to the northeast.
After hours of travel, they reached a place that seems to be a city or a very large complex. Spock is very impressed about its architecture. They aliens deposited the Federation officers in some kind of a small cell. The only way to get out from there is thru an open side, but there is a force field as the bars of a jail.
Tumblr media
The creatures left them alone without telling them nothing. Apparently they do not want to comunicate with them. Spock is receiving mental impressions. Perhaps, it is the only means of communication of those aliens. Bones made an assumption they are there because the giants want to make sure the trio are free from any kind of bacteria.
Tumblr media
The doctor shouted in hopes to get an answer. Spock tells him that this is unnecessary, because they are telepathic but the speed of the flow of their thoughts are great to him to comprehend except for the most fleeting image. They realized the Lactrans are a very high evolved civlization.
Later, the aliens took them to a more huge place. One in which they got a collection of creatures that may be from different planets for exhibition, for displaying them. Like a zoo.
Tumblr media
In there, they finally found Lieutenant Commander Tom Markel accompained by Biologist Randi Bryce. Markel told that he listened to Kirk's messages but he could do nothing because the Lactrans got their communicators and other equipment. Spock has the impression the aliens have done it because they are taking care of them.
Also, the commander tells Kirk that he and his fellow officers did not arrive on time to save the first three crew members. In a bedroom, lies the navigator of Markel's crew, Lieutenant Randolph. She is lying in bed with a high fever.
They have tried many ways to escape of their captivity, but they all fail. Bones will help Randolph, but he need his equipment. The commander tells to the doctor that they brought food to them on a weekly basis.
The Lactrans are creatures that evolved to the level that they have an intelligence far too high than Humans or Vulcans. Spock has only slight impressions on what they think about them. Their children sees them with fight. And the women think about them as ugly.
Spock suggest McCoy to think on helping Randolph. But all he gets is more food. Spock thinks it is the natural reaction of the curators of a zoo. Then, the science officer of the Enterprise suggest that all of them must concentrate on the medical kit and it worked out.
Tumblr media
Kirk is going to try to find a weakness in the force field in the night, but Spock advices him that it is impossible. The Lactrans are far superior than them, so any intent of escape by the means of using force will be useless.
After so much thinking about getting out there, Spock came with an idea. The vulcan suggest that one of them will pretend to be sick while the others set their minds on the communicator. The captain of the Enterprise volunteers for the role play of the sick one.
During the charade, a very small alien –a Lactran child-- took the communicator to give it to Kirk and he uses it to call Scott at the ship. He orders the engineer to beam him up, but the little one took the device back and it was transported by accident.
Scott was surprised to see the little Lactran at the transporter room. He tries to reason with the creature, but it took him with its tentacles and brought him to the bridge. Meanwhile at the surface, a couple of aliens that may be the parents of the little one are desperate. They began to torture Captain Kirk with their thoughts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moments later, Scott was beamed down to the surface of Lactra VII with the alien baby. He had the chance to communicate with it. The small Lactran is six years old but it has a very high IQ. It learned so much about the Federation and its mission.
Tumblr media
The adult Lactrans realized that all officers are not suitable to be incarcerated in a zoo. They let them go. Kirk orders to be beamed up to the Enterprise with the rest of the crew. All humans.
Markel resents he got no more chances to make research on the Lactrans. Spock received the final message from the aliens telling them that they will be received in twenty or thirty centuries. But not the humans ones, theirs.
Tumblr media
