Removing Scooby doo from Velma show because “talking dog can only be in kids cartoons” is the same as “Salem is not gonna talk in chilling adventures of Sabrina cause this show is more dark and serious”. Like no, that’s not right. You just removing the beloved character for no fucking reason and the show still is not mature or dark whatsoever 🙆🏼‍♀️

I actually really like the idea of a Scooby Doo prequel centered around the Mystery Gang before they became friends.
Velma is your typical nerd who's interested in true crime. She started off solving small mysteries around her neighborhood, like where someone's missing cat went or who stole someone's bike. Then, some sort of really big mystery happens that the police completely overlook. Maybe students are ending up dead or missing or something like that.
She goes to the same school as Fred, Daphne, and Shaggy, but never talked to them due to personal assumptions. Fred is a popular jock, and a lot of his teammates bully Velma and force her to do their homework for them, so she doesn't trust him either. Daphne is a pretty rich girl who hangs out with a group of mean girls who also make fun of girls like Velma. Even though Fred's group and Daphne's group overlap, the two of them have never really spoken to one another before. Then, there's Shaggy who always shows up to school late, never knows the answer to teachers' questions, and sleeps through half of his classes.
Eventually, one of Daphne's friends get kidnapped. So, one night, she sneaks into the school to find some clues at the same time as Velma. Fred's there because he forgot his uniform, and Shaggy just likes hanging out at the school to do his homework in peace and quiet. They all team up for a while until security gets involved, and Fred helps them into a speedy getaway as the only one with his driver's license.
With Fred driving them home, the group decides to at least have a temporary team-up. Daphne and Velma have a shared goal, Fred likes having friends for the first time in forever, and Shaggy doesn't want to be the odd man out.
They get closer as they solve the mystery together. Fred isn't a jerk, and is super sweet and amazing at building all sorts of things, especially traps. Shaggy always brings the gang food he made, and eventually introduces them to his talking dog who may or may not be immortal. Daphne invites everyone to her house for sleepovers, helps Velma explore her style in a way that's still comfortable to her, and reveals her endless knowledge about every single person in the entire town.
The mystery gets solved, and the four stays friends. The End :)

while we’re all brainstorming ideas for how ‘velma’ could have been a good ‘edgier and more mature modern take on scooby-doo’, i have an idea!
the mystery gang are given more 21st century redesigns. no more bell bottoms, some of them start wearing sneakers, shaggy wears a baggy hoodie, stuff like that.
they still have their usual color palettes and individual styles (shaggy’s clothes are baggy and comfortable, daphne is stylish and fashionable, etc), but they dress more like present-day highschool students. but, obviously, no designs are too detailed that they’re hard to animate and their designs shouldn’t date the show by being too specific to the trends of the 2020’s.
but, in one episode, crystal cove high has a “60’s themed” school dance, and the mystery gang attends in their original outfits!! maybe some extra 1960’s flair could be added just for fun, too. and the episode could have other references to the og series as well. the episode could have other 60’s references and easter eggs scattered throughout the episode.
later in the episode the gang has a classic benny hill theme chase with the villian, and, when it stops, scooby says “reja ru!” (deja vu). then fred, being a himbo, leans over to daphne and says “since when does scooby speak italian?”. daphne naturally gives him a “???” look, but before anyone can react to what fred or scooby said, the trap goes off and the bad guy is caught. episode continues from there.
there’s so much potential with the mystery gang. it sucks that velma (2023) hates its source material so much.

On the wave of Velma sucking, I want to bring attention to another project that takes the same concept (adult mystery gang show) and does it lovingly and really well: Mystery Incorporated.
youtube
This is an independent project that has been given the grace of the IP holders, and it's so obviously crafted by folks who genuinely love the franchise. Yes, it's a little gritty and dark and "adult," but in like... A cheesy, campy first-season-supernatural kind of way– it's not played to be "shocking," and it obviously cares about the people watching it. (There's so many little clever nods to obscure Scooby shit it's insane)
The first 50 minute pilot episode was released a little under a year ago, and I strongly encourage you to check it out and support the team to produce more episodes. Channel whatever effort you were going to put into hate-watching Velma into supporting good things, instead.
Also, it at least has the dog.

Guys we need to go on the offensive with this scooby doo rewrite stuff. literally every person on this hellsite has proven they could come up with a better scooby doo reboot (you are all literally so genius and talented, shoutouts to all the redesigners and rewriters out there, keep it up!) But I think we should really just Goncharov the hell out of it. just create the apex of scooby doo and pass it off as our own creation
honestly this could be our solution for many problems to come too
Forsake reality, Undergo Goncharovification

all I’m saying is, scooby doo is ultimately about friendship and teamwork and actively making them mean and not liking each other is changing the core of the show and their characters thank you and goodnight

More about Fred Jones
In Scooby Doo!: Mystery Incorporated, there is an episode in which Fred gets replaced with an imposter, a "Fake Fred" (A spoiler free recap of why is because the villians need to get something Fred hid, so they kidnap him to learn the location, while also replacing him so the rest of the mystery gang can help the fake Fred actually find it- its a good episode).
Anyways the person impersonating Fred acts extremely out of character for Fred. He is rude and hateful to the gang. He ignores Daphne and calls her dumb. He is mean to Scooby. He calls Shaggy the wrong name and insults him. He insults Velma on her appearance.
He is rude. He is selfish. He is cruel. He is not the Fred the audience or the gang knows. He is a fake.
However
He is just like the Fred in the Velma show.
Watching this episode back after seeing the Velma show's depiction of Fred is so ironic because this episode feels like a critique of that depiction of Fred TEN YEARS BEFORE IT EVEN CAME OUT!
In the episode the real Fred asks:
"How can you impersonate me, when you don't even know anything about me?"
That is what the Velma show feels like. People writing the characters without knowing them. Maybe its not that serious, but I am really sick of these kinds of kinds of lazy shows getting funding, while good animation gets shafted.
Anyways if you have HBO go watch Scooby Doo!: Mystery Inc.

At this point, I’m more inclined to believe that Goncharov is a real movie than Velma being a real TV show

Don't you just love it when a kids show from the 2010s can explain talking animals in a unique and serious way, but the adult spin off premiering this year didn't even try?

The reception to Velma has honestly been insane to see. There are plenty of shows that come out and are pretty widely hated but still have their fair share of defenders, stuff like She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel and Big Mouth. Velma isn’t like that. I’ve seen literally nothing but overwhelming negativity towards Velma. I haven’t even seen anyway say it’s mediocre, it’s all been unanimous thumbs down. This might actually be the biggest flop HBO Max has ever had, and maybe ever will have, because think about it: Scooby-Doo might be Warner Bros’ most beloved animated IP next to Looney Tunes. They give it yet another reboot, but this time it’s an HBO Max exclusive, it’s got a bunch of big celebrities behind it, it’s aimed at adults, and it receives a ton of promotion. Then it comes out and literally everyone hates it. WB and HBO Max swung for the fences only to end up not just missing the ball, but for the ball to smack them in the face at 90 MPH.
The fact that WB and HBO Max cancelled and removed a bunch of animated projects that people actually liked only makes Velma’s flop hit harder and reflects really, really poorly on them.
