The pièce de resistance of Bovenbeekstraat 21 in Arnhem is a series of painted wall coverings depicting scenes from the life of the Macedonian King Alexander the Great (356-323 BC). They were copied after works by Charles Le Brun (1619-1690), the famous court painter to Louis XIV (1638-1715). Le Brun made a series of four paintings between 1661 and 1673 to glorify the reign of Louis XIV, who was King of France from 1643 till 1715. The paintings in Arnhem only copy three of the four paintings by Le Brun and are the mirror image of the originals. This is due to the fact that they were copied after prints, which were also reversed. The wall coverings shown here (1 and 2) depict the triumphant entry of Alexander the Great into Babylon. Alexander took this ancient city in Mesopotamia after he had defeated the armies of Darius III (380-330 BC), King of the Achaemenid Empire (r. 336-330 BC), in the Battle of Gaugamela (331 BC). The house features beautiful decorations in the then fashionable Rococo style such as stucco and wood carvings. Between 1844 and 1920 it served as an orphanage, later as an office and warehouse. This wonderful alcove in Rococo style can be found in Arnhem in a house on Bovenbeekstraat 21. @vereniginghendrickdekeyser restored this 18th century house in 1994-1995. During the restoration this alcove was discovered in the former dining room on the piano nobile. It features small corbels, which were intended to display precious porcelain, and a fountain. The interior of the Cellebroederskapel still contains much of its’ original appearance from 1512. The chapel was restored between 1963 and 1965 after a long period of dereliction and misusage as for example storage room and garage of a bus company. Between 1995 and 1998 the original colours were brought back. The intricate rib vault still contains much of its’ original paintings. The Cellebroederskapel is, together with a small annex, the only remnant of the former monastery of the ‘Cellebroeders’ in Maastricht. These Alexian Brothers (or Cellites) were a lay religious congregation devoted to caring for the sick, specifically those suffering from leprosy and the bubonic plague, and for burying those who died of these diseases. Dordrecht is the oldest city of the historic County of Holland. Its strategic location in the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta made Dordrecht an important and wealthy trade city. In spite of floods, like the Saint Elisabeth’s flood of 1421, a large ciry fire in 1457 and steady decline in the 16th century a lot of late medieval have survived to this day. ‘De Onbeschaamde’ in Dordrecht contains some gorgeous 18th century ironwork in Rococo style. Around 1755 Adriaan Stoop and Johanna Everwijn, who then owned the house, ordered a grand redecoration of the interior.
