@soulspent. . . dick grayson.
' i'm fine, just. . . give me a minute. '
it's almost too dark to tell, white light too often a fickle, scattered thing. it's quiet enough, though, to hear the breadth in his breaths, too heavy, her own almost too thin against it, held too tight somewhere between her heart and her mouth. sometimes, dick grayson is too everything for his own good. for her's. her hands hover, first, some unseen pressure coiled around him, magnetic, opposite poles come together. but then she blinks, gaze adjusting to the dark, the gleam of too much sweat on his throat, glaze in his eyes, and something somewhere shakes loose.
“   i don't think so,   ” she murmurs a heartbeat before her grip catches on his arm, his neck, thumb brushing just along his pulse - point on the way. quick and reedy. she can't spot the difference between black and red, shadow and blood, but she looks, despite herself, flicking the hair from her own too - sticky face with a quick jerk of her head. “   and you have no idea what they gave you in there, or how much ?   ” not like her. no poisoned pulse to question, no mystery, miracle cocktail to numb the dull bite of cuffs in the circle of her wrists, to water down the aching drag of stiff plastic force - fed down her throat— no, unlike her, dick barely seems present to even the sharp blade of her eyes dissecting him open, the firm press of her fingers, or perhaps hyper - aware, something hummingbird bright to his body even as it falters.
she didn't get a good look back there either, not even through all the oranges and the yellows she left behind, the brain matter pink and bleached bone white, but some foreign, alien part of her knows he's a sick shade of gray underneath all the black. “   you need to stop for the night. we need to stop for the night.   ” stating the obvious. it's easier than voicing the mere whisper at the back of her neck, vein - deep prickle drowned out by phantom adrenaline, even now, a rolling boil turned butterfly slight. a stillness frozen over brittle and breakable, like aching teeth pressing down hard enough to creak. certainty clamped down over nothing. they barely made it out alive, this time. they may yet not.

i almost think bruce killing the joker. . .   was worse for jason,  in a way.     because if jason came back from the dead to the joker still alive,  the resulting resentment for bruce would be buried under a layer of inadequacy,  that even in death,  he was barely a blip on the radar for someone like batman.     even his death wasn't enough.     but bruce finally killing the joker ?     after all that time ?     what was the point of it all,  then ?     anyone the joker killed or maimed because he was allowed to play cat and mouse with batman knowing the worst he ever does to him is capture instead of kill,  what did they suffer for ?     cause if bruce killed him in the end anyway,  it sure wasn't for some higher no kill principle.     at least if jason's death wasn't enough to make the joker worth killing too,  he could dismiss bruce as some delusional man with a god complex who cares more about being the hero than saving people,  but he killed the joker,  finally.     the principle meant nothing and people died for nothing,  jason died for nothing,  and he hates bruce for that.

obsessed with dick and jason’s first interactions.     jason’s clearly starstruck meeting his predecessor  ;  genuinely doesn’t seem insecure at all about measuring up   [  i’m guessing because dick left of his own accord  ]   to the previous robin.     the closest thing we get to a barb is jason commenting on robin’s old design being outdated,  which could easily just be their age and personality differences,  and it seems sincerely just like jason being jason.     but then he mentions the trackers,  and the tone immediately shifts.     jason’s baffled dick doesn’t remember,  seems almost reluctant he mentioned it at all once he realizes dick has no idea,  yet he does elect to give bruce the benefit of the doubt first and foremost,  throwing it out there that maybe dick just forgot he had a tracker injected into his arm.     jason’s got bruce’s side of the story in the last year they’ve worked together and this is the first he’s interacted with the man who used to wear the shoes he’s filling.     once the trackers are mentioned,  or more specifically  :  that dick didn’t even know about them,  there’s suddenly a power dynamic in place.     one that i don’t think jason was even looking for,  but even still,  one he can’t deny feels good.     none of the comments that get thrown out after that feel mean - spirited per se,  but they are there regardless,  when jason reacts easily to the safehouse security system not recognizing dick anymore,  a simple shrug and   ‘  must’ve changed the locks  ’.     i don’t think he’s trying to get under dick’s skin,  but he can’t be oblivious to the fact that he is,  and a part of him preens at the feeling,  even if he wasn’t looking for their dynamic to be like that in the first place.

jason,  re  :  canon divergence. . .     [ 1 / ? ]
as season three airs,  this content is subject to change.     that being said,  most of jason’s divergencies do revolve around his red hood storyline.     in jason’s default verse,  there is no fear drug past the point of jason’s resurrection.     before jason’s death,  things are more or less titans compliant,  but immediately following his resurrection,  his actions are mainly fueled by the lazarus pit side affect of temporary madness and crane’s influence as the first presence at his side upon rebirth.      this level of vulnerability and instability wear off some time after hank’s death,  at which point he ditches crane and tries to mentally regroup   [  with severe difficulty,  clearly  ]   while at the same time trying to avoid detection from both the titans and crane,  should the man try to come after him.     thanks to his experience on the streets of gotham city before  bruce took him in,  he navigates this with relative ease.     this is when he finds that missing kid and returns him to molly.     amidst his processing of guilt over hank and his own death itself,  the vigilante identity of the red hood begins to emerge,  and while still in the works,  will far more resemble the comics depiction than titans thus far.
in interactions after these events,  jason is still very much in antagonistic standing with the titans.     he doesn’t particularly wish to be their ally,   though he doesn’t want to establish himself as their enemy either.     he self - isolates mostly in his vigilantism due to his diverting philosophies from who he was as robin and the standards he figures he’ll be held to were he to ever try and join them again   [  that’s if they’d even let him to begin with,  after all that’s happened   ].     he’s not opposed to establishing good terms with the titans or other vigilante groups,  but it’s more his standing with bruce and dick that would keep him from doing so.     while not an enemy to the others in particular,  he does have personal grudges still alive and kicking against bruce and dick specifically.

dick is actually naturally pretty tactile,  despite how repressed he can be at times.     he grew up the youngest in a traveling circus,  doted on and celebrated by crowds of people.     his mind developed in a lighthearted group setting,  easy company and affection a daily occurrence,  and it maybe meant less than it would to him now,  but only because it was so normal at the time.     as robin and especially after jericho,  touch became something reserved for giving and receiving pain,  with blood and sweat against training dummies,  wrapped around bō staffs and batons and grappling hooks.     physical affection in wayne manor was a rarity,  and after bouncing around the system as a fresh orphan,  most touches came from consoling strangers with sad eyes anyway,  made him feel like an imposter,  an illusion of a poor child who lost both parents in one night versus the feeling of being within arm’s reach of them right before they plummeted to their deaths while he simply watched.
all that to say  <3  he’s paved new habits that leave most touch to be initiated by the other party,  but if he cares about you and learns that’s what you’re receptive to,  what makes you feel happy or safe ?     he will make it a point to put a hand on your shoulder,  stand closer than necessary shoulder to shoulder,  maybe even. . .   give you a free hug every once in a while if you're lucky,  who is to say. . .

do i appreciate titans’ strange application of very sporadic religious imagery throughout their show so much that it reaches even outside of their actual antichrist character ?     well.     i can’t ever stop thinking about how they had dick slip - sliding off the deep end from his guilt over jericho bleeding into his present guilt over jason bleeding into his present guilt over his entire handling of the new titans bleeding in from his past guilt over failing the old titans in the first place and all of it manifesting as an honest to god hallucination of bruce both mocking him and nudging him to stop running from it all and dick separating himself from the others to try and deal with everything by himself again and the trail leading him to a church where the original sin took place,  where an innocent died for him because of his deception,  where bruce’s nudges become gentler and fatherly and dick realizes the only way to end the cycle of violence and failure is to admit his failure and confess his sins.
so.     yes i do.

gar doesn't remember much of his time with CADMUS after his initial conversation with graves.     if he were to describe it to someone,  he'd say it's more like how he remembers that as a toddler,  he couldn't sleep unless he was kicking his legs.      as a teen,   he doesn't have any memories of this,   he just remembers that at some point,  he did.     he remembers that he remembered,  almost as if it happened to someone else,  a game of telephone from one part of his brain to another.     he knows what happened to him with CAMDUS,  that they cut into his skull and poked at it,  knows they opened him up and rearranged what was inside the way he knows dick wakes up in the night and microwaves tap water for a cup of earl gray and that kori often joins him,  the way he knows rachel cooks them breakfast when she has a good day and conner plays his ps4 deliberately slow to avoid breaking the buttons again.     he knows what happened to him because it happened,  but there are no memories themselves that he's the person they happened to,  just a vague sort of knowing that's catalogued in detail in the forefront of his mind.

re  :  titans verse,  i’ve fiddled with most of my muses ages for various reasons  ;  kori and dick being only a couple years younger just because i personally don’t mind minimizing the titans’ age gapes to feel more sibling - like   [  i don’t have a teen titans verse so this is my happy medium  ]   and also just the mun is 22 lol.     gar is aged up but only slightly.     i read somewhere he’s supposed to be 14 in season one and like???     ryan potter was 23 girl i’m sorry??     so my gar is 16 in season one,  17 in season two,  etc etc,  assuming each season and their respective hiatuses cover about a year,  give or take.     the only character i haven’t adjusted and don’t feel comfortable doing so is rachel,  even with my alternative fc because te.agan was literally minor for most of the show so far,  lest the fandom or the actual writers themselves forget  :)

between titans season two and season three,  gar elects to leave themself out missions.     after CADMUS,  with shifting comes too many fresh and bloody memories that don’t even feel like their own,  their subconscious torn to shreds and sown back together again.     they’re more of a ghost haunting the tower for a while,  quiet and tucked away into corners,  mind somewhere else.     when they do finally decide to dip their toe in the waters again,  they still remain back at home base,  taking on more of a guy - in - the - chair sort of role.     eventually,  all they preached to conner about what it means to be a titan echoes back to them enough they can’t sit still while their friends are out there patrolling every night,  while people in need still need help.     still,  when they put themself out there again,  they’re quick and distant in nature,  in and out and back in the shadows with dick when the cameras turn on and the reporters come out.     after all,  who knows which one will remember reporting on the coffee shop a green tiger killed two people in.

obsessed with gar putting up a slew of sticky notes that say ‘all work and no play makes jack a dull boy’ after despondently making his morning coffee and smoothie on day THREE (3) of manning the tower by himself lmao
