#very maeve-coded of me

Note
Maybe I never picked up on it well but were Maeve and Homelander in like a real real relationship? Like was Maeve ever actually into him? She's part of his shrine and he wanted to have kids with her but I feel lost on her side of things lol
in the s3 finale, Maeve said to Homelander in no uncertain terms "From the start, I hated you." interestingly though, she follows that up with, "But what's more, I fucking pitied you." and i always wonder how much Maeve really knew about Homelander. whether she knew about the lab, the bad room, Madelyn, Vogelbaum...
it could be that their relationship was always some kind of publicity move. it might have even been baked into Maeve's contract that she was coming on to play a character, and that character is dating The Homelander. it's entirely possible she wouldn't realize what all that really entailed until it was too late. she started off as a naive and optimistic girl from the south, just like Starlight.
aside from that we really don't get a lot of detail on their relationship. Homelander claims she only started to "pull away" from him 6 years prior to the start of the show, but we also have no idea when Maeve joind the Seven. Homelander tells her that she's the one he's known the longest, but that also conflicts with a lot of other information we have. according to canon, it should be Noir he's known the longest.
as for Homelander, he's never been good at making a distinction between fiction and reality. even if she did start off as his "pretend" girlfriend, his entire life has been a performance. of course he would take it to heart and want to make that fantasy real.
we see the same thing happen when he traps Starlight in a fake dating plot. he has a moment of vulnerability and takes her hand to tell her, "I'm really glad you're here," as if she really is his girlfriend.
realistically, it probably went exactly like this with a young Maeve. she disliked him off the bat, but she played her part. she gained her fame and her success all while Homelander chewed away more and more of her. eventually she grew into an accessory to his violence and cruelty, and with that she became deeply cynical and miserable. she resented him, but she was also deeply afraid of him. we know that Homelander has done horrible things to stake his claim over her, and it wouldn't surprise me if she was afraid he would do worse to her family. maybe with the breakup, she just finally reached a point she felt she had nothing left that he could take from her.
Homelander loved Maeve in the only way he knew how to: he possessed her. even after she broke up with him, he still thought of her as his. so really, it depends who you ask. It was real to Homelander, and it was a living nightmare for Maeve.

things I loved about season four of sex ed (spoilers ahead)
the amount of representation present this season. the disability rep, the queer and trans rep, how not shy the writers were confronting different trans and disability rights issues head on.
eric's arc with his religion and his gayness and how he was able to reconcile the two. this one really hit home for me as someone who is both queer and a person of faith. I love getting to see gayness have a place within faith, it just healed something for me, okay?
otis was so classically otis but he finally (FINALLY) acknowledged his own idiosyncrasies without just writing them off as being the fault of wounds in his life. by the end of ep 8 he was dedicated to making things better for himself and for other people and I'm actually so proud of him for that.
aimee's journey with healing from her SA trauma and how she navigated a new relationship with that. also I know it probably wasn't intentional but she's a very autistic coded character to me and watching her flourish as herself with isaac just did something so special to my heart. I would level cities for her.
and adam too!! him finally getting the closure he needed with eric and them communicating !!!! the scene at erin wiley's funeral when eric is able to tell adam how genuinely proud of him he is, just,,,my heart I love it when people get to heal !! also again with the unintentional neurodivergent rep, like come on - sitting undiagnosed by yourself, handsome? he's just like me fr.
I was worried the writers wouldn't do isaac's character justice, even though he was given a good arc in season three I was still anxious about where they would take it now that maeve was overseas and honestly, they didn't give him very much of a story outside of his history and who he was when he was with maeve. similar to aimee with him, I really liked watching more of his artistic traits pop out and I loved seeing him have a healthy friendship with someone. even better, I love it when the feelings he harbored for that person were mutual with no strings attached. I wasn't expecting him and aimee to be endgame but I'm absolutely not disappointed about it (you can tell he's my fav because I've written the longest paragraph about him so far).
cal and aisha and pk. need I say anything more? my only gripe is that I wish we could have had a glimpse of the three of them on a date or even see if there were other people in the polycule but that's okay !! I also just really loved cal's journey with themself and I loved getting to see them supported for their identity it meant so very much to me.
lastly but certainly not the least, I loved that otis and o ended on mutually agreeable terms with each other, it just really added to the whole theme of trying to heal and open new doors and be okay with things not being in control all the time. it was especially touching that he gave his position as therapist to her because he knew and acknowledged he had work to do on himself like !!! very rare otis w but totally welcomed. had the show continued I would have loved to see more development w him.

the most interesting character detail about maeve through which i have extrapolated at least half my understanding of her is that she prefers to be called maeve. i frequently see "maggie" pop up in meta and fic as her chosen name, but quite literally nobody calls her that, including (and most significantly) elena. elena is maeve's tether to her humanity and her refuge away from vought, yet even elena only ever refers to her as maeve. (and in season 2, we learn that maeve started dating elena before she joined the seven -- before queen maeve's popularity would have become so inescapable that she would feel compelled to introduce herself by that name.) it's especially notable that in her final scene, maeve refers to starlight as annie for only the second time, but she is still called maeve by both annie and elena.
here's what we know about maeve's life as maggie: she had a rocky relationship with her father whom she doesn't seem to speak to anymore, she's from a "cousin-fucker hick town" as described by homelander -- i can't imagine this place being terribly lgbt-friendly, and she generally lacks connection with anyone she would have known before becoming queen maeve. she doesn't have fond memories of this time of her life, and perhaps that extends to all associations with it, including the name maggie.
i tend to think that becoming queen maeve was, in many ways, self-actualizing for her. the act that garners her national attention and earns her a ticket to vought is a heroic one -- she breaks every single bone in her right arm to save a school bus from falling off a bridge. and i know madelyn says she is responsible for the mythos of queen maeve, but this character was still aspirational, and likely someone maeve wanted to live up to. in any case, this new identity gave her a purpose and tools to achieve it: she wanted to help people! by her own admission, maeve enters vought bright-eyed and hopeful, not far off from annie. (maeve is also one of the only supes in the seven not to know about compound v -- she doesn't strike me as religious but believing she's among the very few born with powers would have strengthened her internal drive to be a hero.)
it's for the same reason that i think maeve actually... liked having powers? of course she says otherwise in her last season, but season 3 maeve is cynical and weary from about two decades of dealing with vought and homelander's abuse. they've used her first as the token woman and then the token gay person of the seven. after growing largely passive to the brutality of the job, the flight 37 incident forces her to confront all of the violence she's witnessed and tolerated. she's given pieces of herself away and she loathes the husk of herself that's left. i don't find it surprising that she would want to relinquish every single connection to vought, including her powers.
assuring herself that she will be better off without her powers comes with an added benefit: she gets to distinguish herself from homelander, who would be lost without his powers. and i think she is eager to make this distinction in her mind because there are some uncomfortable similarities between their initiations into vought. the mantle of homelander allows him to exert agency for the first time in his life, just as the mantle of queen maeve endows her with purpose for the first time in hers. (crucially, none of his current circle call him john, either.) they both enjoy being the most powerful superheroes in the world, the unending public adoration, and (in my interpretation) each other. they're also both overwhelmingly lonely and they know it -- homelander teases her multiple times about how she has no friends with a bit more bite in every passing season, while maeve is keenly aware of his isolation and exploits his yearning for love pretty effectively.
maeve steadily grows disillusioned with her position at vought because she still has a moral code, suppressed though it may be. even so, she nearly relents to homelander's vision: that they will be lonely at the top but lonely together. she's pulled out of her miserable state of inaction by annie and elena. annie reminds her of what a hero should be (what she was, once); elena offers her a way out of vought, serving as maeve's light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak.
she escapes that tower as maeve, not maggie. she rejects homelander's god complex which engenders his cruelty towards regular people and 'lesser' supes -- no one will call her queen maeve ever again, at least -- but it is still important to her to be a hero, and for better or for worse, she found that as maeve. i feel like she'd struggle to exist without her powers (possibly the self-awareness hasn't settled in yet) for all the reasons mentioned above. i like to think that eventually, she'll circle around to helping people and resisting vought however possible -- albeit on a smaller, more covert scale so she can continue living a peaceful life with elena.

About Me/People I'd Like to Know Better
Tumblr media
Last song: Really, I've been listening to a lot of Fallout songs, I don't know that there's a 'last one' because even out of game, I've got Fallout playlists on! But Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall has been stuck in my head, in particular, as well as Mighty Mighty Man. I love jazz, though - swing always makes me want to get up and move! So...Fallout music really hits a sweet spot for me.
Favorite color: Green! Most shades of it, though I have a fondness for lime green!
Currently reading: Not actively reading at present, I stopped in the middle of one of the Padme Amidala books a bit back, though - and I was loving reading about her pre-movies! It really puts into perspective what a badass she was, and why she was never a damsel in distress. She had a squad of highly trained assassin hand-maids around her and a contingency for everything, PLUS she was a woman of the people! Her books have made her one of my top favorite characters in the whole of the Star Wars universe - I'd have loved to see what she would have accomplished in the rebellion!
Currently watching: I just finished the new Fallout show, and I'm planning on catching up on Bad Batch here soon.
Sweet/savoury/spicy?: I have a notorious sweet tooth, but I'm also a huge fan of spicy - but as you get older, your body HATES spicy stuff...so enjoy it while you can!
Relationship status: Living with a platonic partner of 10 years
Last thing you googled: An image editor! I was trying to make the mayqo'te prompt list look more pretty than...just a list of words on a tumblr post.
Current obsession: Fallout 76 and SWTOR! After furiously charging through the whole SWTOR MSQ, I'm really swept up in a galaxy far, far away and how good the writing is and how much I love the branching choices that matter, and are remembered in the MSQ! (Plus there's free character housing on the 'battlepass' this time around, and it's one of the best ones yet...) Fallout 76 is free until May 15th, with Amazon Prime...so I picked up a code on the 76 Reddit and I have been LOVING it! The players are super nice, and it's just...fun? Making guns, armor, wandering the wasteland...building a joint house + roadside convenience store out in the world wherever I want! It has really sucked me in. @ungrateful-cyborg and @briar-ffxiv tagged me in very similar things, so I combined them, since only about 2 things were different!
I dunno who hasn't done it, so I'll toss a few names out that are in my notifs - do it if you want, and forgive me if you've been tagged already!! @wpip-raham @xmimiteh @uldahstreetrat @illia-ast @why-raven @littlestcreampuff @hares-and-hounds @cosmicharm @dragonsongmakhali @thedawnforged @starforger @selnyam @madalyn-maeve

LAST TIME ON RANGER ACADEMY: Sage is fully committing to the high school life, even if there are some obstacles like bullies, hard classes, her friend's tragic backstory, and the discovery of the Chamber of Secrets.
But there's no time to dwell on that, because it's time for the Morphin Trial, where kids are dumped in a hostile landscape to be color-coded by some weird old alien cult. Sounds legit!
It's Ranger Academy #4!
Before we begin let's take another look at that Katie cameo. Sure she doesn't do anything but drive the bus and I still have no fucking idea how these cameos work when they're appearing in-person vs those inter dimensional tubes but it's at least nice to see her
Tumblr media
ANYWAY. Time to drop some children off to die
Tumblr media
= So some lore stuff established already is the Bandorian Monks reside on the planet "Chromia" specifically in the "Zeo Chamber" in "Prism Peak." It only opens for a limited amount of time once a year. From what I can remember none of this, except the Zeo Chamber I suppose, was in Eltarian War's established lore, but I guess that can be chalked up to Ranger Academy being its own thing. (And for what it's worth, the Zeo Crystal itself is not in the chamber.)
Tumblr media
= yes yes guys we get it you want that video game/RPG adaptation
Tumblr media
= This is so valid of Theo but unfortunately for him I know what happens to PR characters with his kind of jokey, charismatic personality
Tumblr media
= So are they going to be the book's main romance or not. I'm calling upon protection spells against sisterzoning
Tumblr media
= NO NONON ONONONONON NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DON'T DO THIS
Tumblr media
= So.....okay. Here it is. Here's the line
So obviously there are colors missing from the Academy and at the very least Theo's dialogue is implying that's on purpose. Which makes me hopeful for my old "Camp Half-Blood" theory that this book will end with more color campuses being added. And obviously, Theo's source isn't telling the whole story or getting facts wrong.
But. Look.
Even if Lindy's dialogue is only saying that Green and Orange Rangers don't exist in the Academy rather than the universe as a whole, the entire concept of certain colors being forbidden or unknown is ridiculous when this is a school that fully encompasses itself in Ranger history. Sage mentioned in a previous issue learning about Jen and why their library is named after her, so their adventures must be part of the curriculum. Even if it isn't, their teachers are Ranger alumni. ONES THAT HAD GREEN RANGERS ON THEIR TEAMS. Their bus driver was KATIE! She can't talk about Trip, her best friend? Crueger never brings up how Green is the third-highest ranking ranger at SPD? I think this wouldn't even annoy me so much if they weren't equating Oranger Rangers (of which there have only been three official ones in the franchise, with others being so-so canon) to Green Rangers (of which there's only been. four seasons, I believe? where there was no Green at all). I know Power Rangers wants Green to be special but it just simply doesn't work because by definition, it isn't.
I think this would only work for me if a) we establish that the present of Ranger Academy is set either extremely far in the past or extremely far in the future, where Rangers either barely exist yet OR it's been so long that the canon we know has been shrouded in legend or b) we didn't have the alumni ranger cameos and we establish this school is completely cut off from the established canon we know. And the last one doesn't work because they clearly want the cameos to be one of the main gimmicks of the series. So idk. It's probably Ranger Academy's biggest headache for me
And just in general I don't know how "forbidden colors" work when the students' color is just chosen based on what the Monks see inside them. It should be unique to them, not based on a criteria that can pick and choose or throw out different options.
ANYWAY. The trio finds Kartyr and Maev and, unsurprisingly, these children are about to die
Tumblr media
= what's with Green Rangers having to rescue their rivals that suffer broken ankles. Oops, spoilers
Tumblr media
= Sage has only been part of this school for a few months and she's already indoctrinated into their religion
Tumblr media
= Kartyr is such a hater for no reason. You should be connecting with your green-haired brethren
= Also I just realized that Kartyr is most likely a Xybrian yet he doesn't follow the naming motif that Trip and the Supersonic Rangers did. I won't hold it against the author as the Supersonic Ranger origin story is pretty obscure but still, it's funny to me.
Though wait if he's a Xybrian shouldn't he know about Trip and how he's a Green R [I am yanked offstage via a giant hook]
Tumblr media
= Okay guys I get we're using MMPR theming but are really trying to say Pink Rangers are good pilots? Because what, Kim had flying zords? That's getting a little ridiculous. What's next, Pink Rangers are all amazing archers?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
= Maev becoming Yellow was a little surprising since Mathis is already a major character who's yellow, but at the same time I'm really not sure.....what the guidelines are to what color each person becomes. It feels kind of arbitrary at this point tbh. Though maybe it's just because I don't really know Maev as a character yet compared to Theo, who fits the Black Ranger archetype like a glove
and speaking of which
Tumblr media
= Lindy not being able to morph genuinely pissed me off like. Again. What are the guidelines here. What about Lindy isn't ranger-worthy. Can I just call the Bandorian Monks racist for denying a Black girl the chance to morph because I think I'll just do that
Tumblr media Tumblr media
= SHAME SHAME SHAME SHE HAS THE MARK OF THE DEVIL (her novelty lightning bolt coin turned green, a color that has never existed before this)

Alone
Homelander x fem!reader
Word Count: 1k
Warnings: homelander is his own warning
Author’s Note: literally homelander my beloved. He’s so annoying. I would die for him. I hate him. He’s the love of my life. Hes the bane of my existence. Hes never wrong.
Requested: by anon, Hi Maya! First of all congrats on graduating! That’s amazing!! Second, I’ve caught up on The Boys. I was wondering if I could request a fic for Homelander where he feels like he’s all alone and has no one and reader (who works for Vought - can be a supe or not) comforts him and lets him know he’s not alone, that he has her and they kiss at the end. I just need some Homelander angst with a happy ending fluff in my life! If you want of course :)
Summary: the request!
I don’t own these characters. They belong to author/director/creator
(not my gif)
Tumblr media
Homelander was breathing through his nose. The fake smile wasn’t breathable, he had learned through the years. It showed too much teeth. It hurt his gums too much. He waved as he walked, very straightforward, very rehearsed.
He had always known he was alone.
Ever since he was born he had been a lab experiment. But he had been the best lab experiment. He had been Voughts' perfect creation. No one was at his level. That’s why he was alone. Because the best never got company.
Someone bumped into him. His smile faltered a bit, ever so slightly. He was about to say something rather unsavory when he met your eyes. You were covered with show makeup and looking a little unlike yourself in the light of the spotlight.
“Are you alright?” you asked gently. “Sorry I bumped into you. You looked a bit out of it. Wanted to bring you back down to Earth before you start floating.”
Homelander smiled then, a real actual genuine smile. Yeah he was alone. But he had you.
You, his only semi equal in power in the Seven.
And you, the only one who was honest with him about anything.
“Think I’m catching a cold,” he said. You started to walk together then, arms brushing as you waved at the flashing cameras. You were going to be interviewed together this Sunday, one of the good press spots. They had started setting up you and Homelander together when they realized how much chemistry the two of you had. It was the kind of chemistry they forced out of Maeve.
“You can catch colds?” you asked, amazed.
“A bit of code they messed up when making me.”
“Oh you were computer made now?” He shrugged.
“Something like that.” He grabbed your hand as you took one last picture, stepping inside. There were less people watching you there. He was able to let his face fall, let the facade drop. His hand remained in yours. It kind of felt like you were anchoring him to the world for a moment.
“John,” you whispered gently. He looked back at you. “You’re using your super strength on my hand.” He looked down and noticed you were right. He let go quickly, wiping off his gloves. He cleared his throat instead of saying he was sorry but you got the gist.
“Y/N! Come sign some pictures!” Ashley called, ushering you over. You nodded quickly, looking back at Homelander.
“See you at seating!”
He watched you go without grabbing at you like he wanted to. He was back in the crowds, the masses, alone again. He watched you go, watched your fake smile go back up. He watched you before someone else tried to pull him away.
-
You found Homelander sitting, waiting for the movie to start. He was early, which surprised you. Usually he liked to mingle a bit more, boast about his role in the movie or something. You sat down beside him. You were pretty much one of the only people sitting down already.
“What are you doing?” you questioned. “Sitting here alone I mean. The Homelander should be out breaking hearts, taking names.”
“The Homelander is taking a break,” he admitted. He adjusted in his seat. You looked over at him and you stared at each other for a silent couple of moments. “What do you think about our role in the movie?”
“Our romantic role you mean?”
“Yeah.”
“I think it makes sense for the characters. We were both lonely. In the movie.” He grabbed your hand.
“Yeah. In the movie.”
“You do know I’m here for you whenever though.”
“I know. You’re the only one who has anything actual to say to me,” he said honestly. You put your head on his shoulder. He put his hand on your knee and you put your leg over his, making him choke up a bit.
“I’m sorry no one else knows how to act around you,” you whispered. “But you’re not alone.”
He looked down at you. You weren’t looking up at him or anything. You're just laying there. Completely comfortable, completely safe in his presence. No one who knew him trusted him. Not like you.
That’s all he needed to hear.
He nuzzled his head into yours.
You sat in the empty theater together, the only two sitting. You grabbed his gloved hand and put it to your lips. You rested there. His heart almost lept out of his chest.

I saw @turbulentpumpkin43 do this for Ariadne and thought, why the hell not ... I always love a chance to talk about my Most Archetype of All Time Guy! 💗
(More below, but the rows basically line up to his looks, themes, and personality in that order)
Boromir (Lord of the Rings) - From the start, Daren's whole concept was "what if Boromir escaped his tragedy?" [Daren's relationship with Alistair is basically a direct inversion of Boromir and Aragorn]. I love Sean Bean to death and when I needed a comfort character to recreate "just for fun" of course it was going to be him. I have him to thank for Daren's tenacity, protectiveness, and stunning profile (and for teaching me how to love my nose by proxy).
Peter Pevensie (Chronicles of Narnia) - The character I used to temper him on Daren's second playthrough! He's the source behind his idealism, dry humor, and faithfulness. I had just rewatched The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe at Christmas for the first time in several years and reimprinted on Peter like a baby duck. If I was going to play a noble, I couldn't think of anyone nobler. Also they're both big brothers ... which is why I NEEDED to make Maeve Cousland canon.
Odysseus (The Odyssey) - I love Love LOVE giving characters classical mythology parallels, before or after the fact. This is a more recent inspiration ... I used to say he was my Achilles because of his struggles with rage and PTSD, but that didn't feel quite right. Then I realized his propensity for lying, bargaining, and above all enduring made him a perfect Odysseus. All he wants is his home and family back, and that's his reward after a harrowing journey, but it's changed and so has he. You can never truly go back :) .
Eliot Spencer (Leverage) - This slot was up in the air and for a while I strongly considered putting Murtagh or Jaime Lannister here, because I really felt like this list needed a villain. And specifically one that was charming yet had a very particular relationship with violence. But in the end I chose Eliot, because he has the exact right mix of self-aware control, gentleness, and absolute ruthless brutality. For Daren, this applies to both his battle prowess and political/social clout and he can wield both as equally deadly weapons. He knows how dangerous he is, so he's content letting the people around him forget from time to time.
Horace Altman (Ranger's Apprentice) - Just like Daren, Horace is a secondary protagonist and serves as the strong arm and reliable ally to the titular hero. He's a champion, a prodigy when it comes to warfare, and head-over-heels for the princess. While he started as a lunkheaded bully, he grew into an honorable, thoughtful man. I'm finally reading the last book in the series where he is in his late 30's and I realized that he and Daren got the exact same ending. All the way down to saving the world, marrying the queen, and having a precocious adventure-seeking daughter. Way to go, fellas.
Clark Kent (Superman) - I have been obsessed with Lawful Good Paladin-coded Heroes since I started reading Justice League comics at the age of 5. Although he has more internal ethical struggles than Clark (usually) has to deal with, they both respond to injustice with the same open, uncomplicated desire to save people and Do The Right Thing. Daren is, under all his stoic responsibility and PTSD, just a big fat goober who tries to hide his feelings so his friends never worry about him. He's used to being the strong one, the reliable one, and his most important and deepest bonds form with people who make him feel safe to be vulnerable and see the toll that shouldering the weight of the world takes. Also, they both love women who boss them around.

I don't know if anyone else has thought about this, but do you think Homie's name is John because he was just meant to be a lab subject? Because when I think "John" I think of John Doe or Jane Doe, which are names that are meant to have no real identities, give to unidentifiable people. Homie's name being "John" because he was never meant to have his own identity so he was given an empty shell of a name.
yeah, absolutely! the idea that Homelander despises the name 'John,' or at the very least feels indifferent to it, is pretty popular fanon theory. there's nothing inherently wrong with anyone being named John, but in the context of his upbringing, fandom has assigned a much more sinister undertone to it for the very reasons you mention. this idea that he was assigned a generic name simply because it was more convenient than addressing him by a lab code.
examples of his possible dislike of it are him blowing off Maeve when she calls him John, and when he meets Vogelbaum again, he asks him, "How long's it been, John?" Homelander answers, "Long enough no one calls me John anymore."
it's up to interpretation why that is. Maeve seems to use it to evoke intimacy/familiarity, but he reacts pretty poorly ("Don't you dare fucking 'John' me."). it's hard to know if that's because he dislikes the name, or because he knows she's using it to manipulate him, or a mix of the two.
it's something i'm broaching in my fic Eat Your Ego, actually. towards the end of the second chapter, in a moment of conflict, Layla calls him Homelander, and he corrects her to John, using that name for the first time.
the intent here was not necessarily that he wants her to call him that, but he does want to normalize himself to her, and in that moment, he feels a "normal" name will help do that.
however, in a later chapter, he tells her to call him Homelander instead. she's going to be asking about that, which will result in a scene sort of explaining (at least in my opinion) why he's conflicted about the name.
i've done that because i really do think it's something Homelander struggles with. there ARE aspects of normalcy he desires, but as we saw with the mirror conversation, there is also a part of him desperate to purge all that human "weakness."

Honestly though the more I see about Popular Red Dead Theories (i.e. "Abigail was a second rat/Molly was the rat all along/Molly/Karen was pregnant" or otherwise critical opinions of the women "Mary used Arthur/Sadie is a Mary Sue/Abigail nags too much/Molly is annoying" it reminds me of aall the similar things that have ever been said about Westworld characters and the double standards that exist there too.
So to start with, there's a double standard that results in a lot of pushback when it involves something like a love interest asking their lover to change for them or run away with them. Abigail and Mary in Red Dead beg John and Arthur respectively to leave their outlaw ways behind and just live a normal, honest life and they receive the brunt of criticism for having set unrealistic expectations for their men.
BUT in Westworld, Teddy is the one who dreams of asking Dolores to run away with him. He asks her to leave their pasts behind and live a domestic life together, carve out a tiny piece of the park for themselves. Nevermind that hundreds of heavily armed enemies are on their way to slaughter every host they find, "just come play cowboys and indians with me forever Dolores I know it's the last thing you want when there's an entire world out there you're not allowed to even see but I love you... Conditionally."
I suspect that because Teddy is a man - or more accurately, a robot designed to look and act like a man in every meaningful way to the point that there is functionally no difference - he got a lot less criticism about this than if you were to reverse the roles. If it was Dolores begging Teddy to quit his job as a bounty hunter I would be highly disappointed but not at all surprised if people then started calling her a nag about it and saying shit like 'well don't fall in love with a bounty hunter if you don't like what they do to put food on the table'
People will also consistently criticize and call Dolores a bitch for changing Teddy's code, but it was apparently totally fine when Arnold merged Dolores with a different character and programmed her to kill him. Likewise, they'll often call Dolores a bitch Again and blame her for manipulating Caleb and not telling him everything she knows, but. I guess it's fine that Serac/Rehoboam & Solomon systemically manipulated Caleb into capturing or killing people, and manipulated him into killing his best friend when the system decided both of them were no longer useful to its cause, and manipulated the most boring and unengaging existence Caleb could've possibly lived to keep him compliant and too shut down to want to fight back. Serac's a dick, but point this out and suddenly a bunch of people would go "wellll maybe he had a point though."
And for another common criticism, both Maeve and Dolores get hit with the Mary Sue comment often, but it happens to Maeve more frequently AND she also gets called annoying for the crime of...idk, missing her daughter? And right there is another double standard. Maeve tried to let go and move on, convince herself that the host playing the role of her daughter is someone she has no attachment to and that it wasn't real, but she couldn't. She remembers and she loves and protects that little girl as if she was real, because to Maeve, she is!
In contrast, Bernard has memories of Arnold's son Charlie and Hybrid Caleb has memories of Frankie, but these men have never even met these children who are always on their mind. There is rarely ever any critique that dives into Bernard chasing after his love of a son who hasn't existed for a very long time. As for Hybrid Caleb...
I don't know, it's like for all the hemming and hawing people do about "oh but the hosts aren't real and they never have been that's the thing" ...by the time they kill Caleb off and reintroduce fidelity testing (which still hasn't quite worked out all the bugs in the program by then) almost everyone seems okay with accepting that for all intents and purposes, Hybrid Caleb is still Caleb. He never even met Frankie before she came to rescue him, but he has all these memories of her and they motivate him to survive until he physically can't go on anymore. He never gets called annoying for this. Just Maeve. Only ever Maeve. I wonder why that is?

Hi! Happy New Year! You’re such an inspiration, I love everything you post. You revived my love for SdV. Just bought it on Switch. I have a weird request: could you please post hex codes for Primrose and Maeve’s hair and eye colours. I can’t make decent brown shades, they always come out washed out.
Happy new year! thank you so much, it means a lot to me <3 stardew valley truly is a precious game. and ofc! tbh i'm not sure if they look exactly like their original tones (bc i was using a modded hair that has a different texture from the vanilla hairs at the time) but i think it's pretty close, and what i would've picked if i was trying to remake them.
this is maeve's hair, who was leaning more towards a ginger tone:
Tumblr media
and this is primrose's, which was more of a muted dark brown, if i remember correctly:
Tumblr media
as for eyes, i just made a quick hex code which is, pretty much, the one i always use no matter the placement of the third line, bc they are all very normal/basic browns/hazel-ish tones

Name ten favourite characters from ten different things (books, tv, film, etc.), then tag ten people.  Tagged by @xpityx
Have I even consumed 10 pieces of media? let's see.
Aloy; Horizon Zero Dawn series - My absolute favorite take on the Chosen One trope.
Fulke; Assassin's Creed Valhalla - with the clarity of hindsight, I can see that AC:V was mid at best, but I will forever be grateful to it for introducing me to some of my favorite people, favorite characters, and sparking an interest in medieval history. Fulke is the evil Jeanne D'arc of my heart. Gone too soon. Shoulda been the final boss.
Sevika; Arcane - In a series of amazing characters, she is my favorite. Is it because of her fascinating lawful-neutral moral code and undying loyalty to the undercity? Or because she's blisteringly hot? Even I don't know!
Gideon; the Locked Tomb Series - The only reason I don't write fic for Locked Tomb is because Muir is too good (and unique) a writer, and I can't even come close to her style. But this series is very dear to me. Gideon herself is simple and complex. Fully god fully human and all that jazz. I mourn for her, and I have hope for her.
Macduff; Macbeth - limiting myself to one Shakespeare character, otherwise this would be a list of my favorite character in every Shakespeare play. Macduff is an amazing hero with a perfect entrance. Best when played as a woman imo.
Sherlock Holmes; From the Sherlock Holmes stories - I read them when I was a little too young to really understand them but I always loved him. I love this gentle queer-coded weirdo.
The Baker's Wife; Into the Woods - I don't mean the movie. For the love of all not the fucking movie.
Sisko; Star Trek Deep Space 9 - (limiting myself to one favorite trek characters) DS9 is the connoisseur's favorite trek. And Sisko is the best captain. Best dad. He'll go to your baby shower. He'll nuke a planet to save your life, and he'd put himself and his morals in danger before letting a redshirt die on his watch. I love him.
Maeve; Westworld - as a certified robot fan, Maeve is the best of all the robots.
Hermann Gottlieb; Pacific Rim - I just love him. I used to love writing him. I love his character voice, I love the way I imagined his mind to work. I love his principals and his flaws. I love prickly characters with soft hearts.

So the downtime starts.  We’re going round robin, two week chunks at a time. Trinidad the tortle is attempting to schmooze and turn his trinkets into a fortune, and he mostly succeeds in buying out the inventory of a couple of enterprising carpetbaggers to boot them out of town, but not much more.  Glory is digging into what it takes to become a harbormaster and bring trade into the town- fortunately Phillip, our retired warlock, knows a lot about laws and taxes and is helpful about it.  He’s also looking for an artist to touch up his tattoos and get a few sketches done. Alain is a grim harbinger of a man, and his attempts at gathering information are... less than successful.  He gets headbutted in a bar asking about the Talos cult, headbutts back- and accidentally kills a man.  The bar is more about ‘get him out of here before he stinks up the place’ than ‘holy shit, you killed a man’, but on searching his pockets there’s a symbol of Talos.  So he takes the body to Maeve the Paladin and Sorianna the mage, hoping for some kind of revivify or speak with dead.
Just examining the symbol he had in his pockets, he was a priest of Talos.  Mikey- this is not good.  Alain sends Maeve back to the bar to find out if there’s anymore there who know him.
Maeve goes to the bar, opens her divine senses, and finds a few stained-souled men playing poker.  She surreptitiously casts Zone of Truth, asks them if they’re members of the cult of Talos.  They say no, confused, and she leaves.  Meanwhile, Sorianna has been found, and she casts speak with Dead on the corpse. “Is there a Talos presence in this town, aside from you?” “Yeeeesssss.”
“Where can I find them?” “In the temple I was building.”
“Where is the temple, specifically?” “In the square that is not a square.” Alain’s player realizes he’s been saying ‘Talos’ instead of ‘Myrkul’ this whole time, and asks if they were working with Myrkul. “We were going to discuss whose territory this town was.”
“Where were you meeting?” “Where... you... killed... me...” He takes the man’s cloak and heads back to the tavern.  Trinidad is at the bar, getting schmoozed by another carpetbagger- it’s the only bar in town.  Maeve is observing from outside, trying not to look too holy. The carpetbagger tries to get Trinidad to give a code phrase to Alain in the disguised cloak.  Alain hears it, and makes up an answer back, but is very suspicious, especially when the merchant waves at them.  “Tell him I’m excited to meet him.”
The carpetbagger tries to continue the conversation via Trinidad, but settles for having him play intimidating bodyguard, and he and Alain (disguised) have a halting coded conversation trying to negotiate control of the town.  ‘We want to retain control, so what do you want for it?’ ‘schedule a meeting for us with your boss so we can set up a longer and more lasting partnership’ A couple of insight checks, and there’s doubts on both sides, and Alain just pulls off the necklace and says “If I’m being *honest*, sir... I’ve been put on this earth to put an end to your cult, etc, etc...” The carpetbagger freaks out and is telling Trinidad to defend him- Trinidad punches him out and they shuffle his limp body outside to the paladin. Glory is studying laws and taxes in the actual council-house, so they take him to an abandoned house to interrogate.  This guy was trying to broker a trade deal with Trinidad as a council member.  The two cults that need wiped out are in the town and working together, and we need answers. They catch him attempting to cast Sending to warn his leader that he’s been captured and prevent it, finding out several important locations to visit and things to compare to notes of characters previous.  There’s stuff going on at a place named after Maeve’s father, where a dreadnought will be.
While this is going on, Glory hears a knock at the councilhouse door, and opens it to see an attractive young lady, saying that the fisherfolk are so grateful for the job he’s been doing, they’ve organized a celebration.  Could he invite her in. Glory is suspicious of that phrasing.  He refuses politely, and shuts the door- a snarl and a wet thump follows, and he opens it again to find a rabbit impaled on the door.  After that he rouses the rest of the house, letting them know it seems like a vampire is about- close the shutters, don’t invite anyone in, keep wood or fire to hand.  The orcish trossfrau break off table legs to sharpen.  Meanwhile the captured evil priest is describing the vampiress who’s working with him.  Having finished with him, Alain kills him- a spectral figure walks out of the priest and out the door, and they follow.  The ghost bows and says “I will go to warn my master now- good day-” but is cut off by psychic knives from Alain.  Poof. So it turns out the dreadnought will be pulling in to the place that Maeve’s father lives in six weeks- the leader of the Talos cult will be there.  The cult of Myrkul wants the dreadnaught back, and we’re thinking we play these two against each other as best we can, then mop up.  Meanwhile, Maeve wants to check if her father is well. The first council meeting comes up- Neverember orders that six weeks hence, a feast and celebration of the town’s founding be held, and that’s pushing aside a lot of our priorities.  Glory rolls up two things together- keep folks fed on the regular, have a brief feast with a few hogs and some cakes the day of.  There’s likely to be some sport and poetry.  Meanwhile, the description of the vampiress has been shared, we’re searching for the temple being built, and slowly we’re investigating.  Glory gets his tattoos done up, and notices an old aquaintance waiting for the next session- a pirate captain he once arrested as a White Sail merc.  He engages him in conversation, sees he’s gotten out of jail- ‘I was deciding whether or not to burn this parlor to the ground with you in it, or buy you a drink.’ “Let’s let bygones be bygones- what can I do for you?”  They talk it out- there’s a lot of former prisoners, and the captain is considering gathering them and doing a spot of black market trading here.  Glory says no slaving, pay your dues to me, don’t make trouble, and be my cat among the rats, keep out any other smugglers, and we’ll be okay.”  There’s a whiff that if he sees an opportunity he might play games, but Glory knows that’s coming. Meanwhile!  Trinidad has been patrolling hunting for that vampiress- and by golly he finds her.  She’s too lowly to be worth interrogating, and gets holy-watered and staked.  The Lathanderites request being the only church in Leilon, and are put off for another time. The likely location of the Talos temple has been found, and is under investigation.  (It’s definitely them.)  Our paladin prepares for her journey and hunting for components for her spells- Glory helps with his thief contacts. The middle of downtime!  The big founding party is here!  Maeve goes off and visits her dad to check in with him.  A servant of their house must give her the sad news- he was lost fighting sahaugin the night before.  She checks the body- it’s definitely him, and he’s being buried with a beautiful sword.  She grieves, deep and awful, but takes the sword with to carry on his legacy.  The people of the village ask her to lead them to fight the seamonsters, but they’ll wait until she brings back her friends to help. Glory is mostly doing administrative stuff, gets the feast off without a hitch.  After, he starts setup on a public kitchen to ensure no kid goes hungry.  Trinidad sets up a patrol/the start of law enforcement in the town.  Alain- is kidnapping and interrogating members of the Talos cult, vigilante-style.  This goes... fine, until the town guard arrive and howl UNHAND THAT GUY-!  Alain is gone in the night, rogue cunning actions for the win, but that is a Thing that Happens. Maeve arrives back, and tells us about the situation.  It sounds like a solid use of our time and good next move- two to three birds with one stone.  A bone dreadnought has been coming to this place for a long time, every other year or so.  They get supplies from people who meet them there, then leave the village.  The last time, about six months ago, there was no supplies, just warriors who ambushed and took over the ship.  It’s been looming on the horizon and may return soon. Glory helps Maeve throw a goodbye wake and grieve for her father.  Next week we’ll catch up with Sorianna, and probably introduce Carver.

unrelated to my scheming but can you please tell me more about julian and kiran the autism is kind of hitting me hard (you can talk in dms if you wish) (or you dont have to tell me at all i mean its your tumblr account)
OKAY. SO. ADDING A READ MORE BECAUSE MY DND GROUP ISN'T ALLOWED TO READ THIS. THAT MEANS YOU RUBBER
So Julian? He's autistic as FUCK. He is very high-masking and he just stims by like, moving his leg or snapping his fingers. BUT. He is also a necromancer. Because of these two things, he has a horse he's revived multiple times. The horse is not in any PAIN and it's a very pretty horse. But it keeps dying and he keeps bringing it back. Julian is so cat-coded. He is also a skinny as fuck twink. He's not trans or anything, he's just tall and lanky. Kiran is four inches shorter than him but is MASS. Julian will just lay on him and curl up in his lap and melt like a fucking bowl of icecream. Julian? Horrifically traumatized and pretends he's not. Kiran will stare skeptically at him every time. Julian's like "Your dad didn't try to throw you across a hall?" and Kiran's like "I love you. But no." KIRAN ALSO HAS CHILDHOOD TRAUMA but that's being reworked so I can't talk about that ask the boyfriend about it if you desire
Julian is VAGUELY Furina coded but he's also based off these characters as a child. On accident
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He has one of those fancy robes with the open chest so him and Kiran are like
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's a tiefling during dnd, and tieflings don't have pupils. They also give off a general vibe of being a little uncomfortable. So he's just INCREDIBLY uncomfortable because he's creepy. He's disturbing! But it makes him cute because he wags his tail when he's happy. ON THE SUBJECT OF THE TAIL WAGGING he's royalty so he wears a corset beneath his shirt, jacket, and gloves. He's very fancy. The corset also functions to hold his tail in place so it stays up instead of drooping when he's sad or wagging when he's happy because that's consider undignified. Kiran gets really excited whenever he gets to see Julian wagging his tail.
THEY HAVE THREE KIDS!!! Maeve, Marigold, and Jasper. Kiran carried them (Transgenderism) and Maeve is like a little female Julian clone, she's a very tall lady. I want her. Marigold got none of the tall genes, she's a solid 5'6 (they're european so that's average) and she hates her freakishly tall family. She takes more after Kiran than Julian, aside from the tiefling traits. Jasper is mostly orc, but he still gets the purple skin tint from Julian. He's just shy. He wants to go to bed. Him and Marigold aren't far apart in age so he just follows her around, so everyone thinks they're a comedic duo but he didn't even do anything he just stood there
