This past Spring on April 19, the team came across a few supercells that fired off of the dryline in Central Oklahoma. This one was very healthy almost from the get go. Things we were looking at to indicate this was a wide/expanding base as well as a lowering base (this was a key indicator of increasing tornado potential). There was also consistent upward motion into the updraft. Additionally, the core was opaque and getting even more so with time. For us as storm chasers, the trends of a storm are the important things we are looking for. It's all of these things and more. A few things I look for as a sign of tornadoes becoming imminent are increasing and persistent rotation and similarly I'm looking for increasing and persistent upward motion into the base. Lightning also sometimes picks way up just before all of this happens. Tfw accuweather says it's partly sunny and pleasant out but a supercell wallcloud just passed overhead and the barometric pressure dropped like the bass in a dubstep remix.

Also I think lightning just struck my building or at least SUPER close by.....power went put and then came back and my tinnitus is Very Angy now.

Is this a tornado?! 🌪️🤔 This particular storm remains one of the most hotly debated ones on the team many years later. A powerful supercell had a powerful low-level mesocyclone that had increasing low-level rotation.Suddenly, as the rotating wall cloud passed over several dirt fields, a weaking rotating dust cloud began to rapidly ascend to the cloud base. There were much quicker rotating visible dust vorticies at ground level as well. I think your perspective on if this is a tornado or not probably depends on how tightly you hold to certain definitions — on one hand this rotating column of dust wasn't violently rotating — but it was clearly rotating from the ground to the cloud under a rotating wall cloud. But after the wall cloud cleared the dusty fields — this whole event dissipated and that was that. So what do you think based on this brief clip of the event? Was it a tornado?
