#marchmeetthemaker day 10 (but 9 really, not quite caught up) Work in Progress A bed commission, a couple I've done work for in the past, they approached me to design and make a bed inspired by this piece of mine. As we discussed the piece in the room it morphed quickly I to something entirely different (1st sketch), but that would clearly fit the space and them better. On to finding lumber (walnut from the western side of the state), but this stack doesn't contain the stock needed for this enormous headboard he wants....yes, your eyes don't deceive you, the headboard is meant to span the wall mounted night tables as well. My primary supplier solar kilns his lumber, and I know he does not steam his walnut like commercial mills do, so this stuff has tremendous purple hues. And I knew I could look at bit further for more similarly processed lumber. Amin my contacts is another small supplier who, in fact, gets his lumber dried by the first guy. Ha! And he has the perfect stock for a 10'l headboard! Heavier than I need but long enough and clear. With some beautiful flame and interesting contour.....which then raises the question " do we want live edge"? While I was at it (in my simple sketches) I thought I would point out that the drawers on this night tables are actually quite low, perhaps they should be raised?---which only works if the headboard does not span them.
