WarioWare: Double Up!
One day, Wario discovers that there’s a popular new video game company called Hotcake Studios- so popular, in fact, that WarioWare Inc. is losing business to them! Even worse, when he gets his hands on one of their games he discovers that it has the same microgame formula as his games, and that the company is owned by none other than his Treasure Hunting rival Captain Syrup. And then to make matters even worse, when he goes to confront her about so obviously muscling in on his business, she reveals that she’s also got her own development team of colorful characters…and each one is a clear direct counterpart to one of the WarioWare Crew. Or in Wario’s words, “You’re not just bootlegging my games, you’re bootlegging my flunkies, too!”
After the whole thing nearly comes to blows, the two strike a deal; each company will make a game, both with the same set of themes(and with each set of counterparts working on the same theme. So for example, Ashley and whoever her counterpart is both make Fantasy-themed microgames), price, and release date, and at the end of the year they’ll see which game sold more copies. Loser has to become a subsidiary of the winner.
I’m not sure how exactly that would translate into a gameplay gimmick (I’m a story guy not a gameplay guy), but as far as story mode goes each level’s story would involve the WarioWare Host getting into some sort of competition with their Hotcake counterpart, some friendlier than others.
The actual counterparts are:
Wario: Captain Syrup, obviously
Mona: Vanessa, that one singer who had a rivalry with her in Touched
Jimmy T: Jenny K, a semi-famous breakdancer
Dribble and Spitz: A Wolf and Bird racecar-driving duo named Howler and Chirpz
Kat and Ana: A pair of Ninji Twins named Shuri and Ken
Orbulon: Tatanga, because why not
9-Volt: A fourth-grade gamer girl named M-Byte
18-Volt: M-Byte’s older brother G-Byte
5-Volt: M-Byte and G-Byte’s dad, K-Byte
13-Amp: A friend of M and G named 64-Bit
Fronk: a Wanderin’ Goom, just named Goom
Dr. Crygor: Rival inventor Professor Boreal
Penny: Boreal’s niece, Hailey
Mike: A singing Piranha Plant named Polly
Doris 1: A robot butler named Vincent
Ashley and Red: A bubbly Magical Girl named Sora and her shapeshifting rabbit friend Violet
Young Cricket: Goombario, who’s recently become a student of The Master
Master Mantis: The Master, from Paper Mario
Lulu: Leo, that one ninja kid with animal-based powers that Kat and Ana fought in their level of Get It Together
The eventual end result is a draw. Both games somehow sold an exactly equal number of units. While this news initially shocks and infuriates Wario and Syrup, they take it as a sign that this whole argument just isn't worth their time and resolve to just more-or-less ignore each-others gaming ventures. Meanwhile, most of their employees have actually made friends with each-other, not really caring about the competition or their bosses' bad history to begin with.

In Wario Land, Wanderin’ Gooms are the most basic enemies and have no attacks, merely walking back and forth and unable to hurt Wario. However, in the game’s data, an attacking sprite and a spiked projectile for the Wanderin’ Gooms can be found, suggesting they were initially intended to be able to attack Wario and were then downgraded to their harmless behavior in the final game during development.

Name: Para-Goom
Debut: Wario Land 3
Para-Goom is a silly little thing. Look at that. That’s the most basic a little guy can be! Honestly kind of a Nothing design. Sorry, Para-Goom. But it’s true. You look like a placeholder design that was liked enough to be used as an actual character... but Kirby already did that! And what’s that you’re holding? A parasol to be used both to gently drift down, and as a weapon? Geez, Para-Goom! You are not making a good case for your individuality here!
I don’t DISLIKE Para-Goom, though. A little guy is a little guy! And in a Wario game, a little guy is something you can pick up and carry around with you, for when you need your little guy fix. And their parasols ARE pretty neat! They can hold them out in front, or above, and if it’s above, they can gently float down! I don’t mean any ill will toward Para-Goom.
Tumblr media
But I’m not Wario! Wario means so much ill will toward Para-Goom! A helpless Goom is the ball as Wario uses it for Regular Golf, the most evil of sports! If this Para-Goom was just rolling around after being lightly bapped about in a MINI golf course, it would probably be having at least a LITTLE bit of fun in addition to the general undesirability of the situation. But no fun allowed in Regular Golf! It’s not even fun for Wario, he just is forced to do it to open doors! Nobody wins with Regular Golf.
Tumblr media
Para-Goom would later reappear in my beloved game which I have never played and do not plan to play, Dr. Mario 64, home of various Wario Land 3 enemies in major roles! Para-Goom is our Gracious Host, and here has a slightly changed design, with a more Chef Kawasaki-style mouth. This is a step in the right direction! Finally, a Para-Goom with some Para-“Pizzazz-onality” (that is my new hip buzzword that will never catch on)! It is still a very simplistic design, but I think it’s more fun. It could get a little more unique with each appearance. That could be its Thing.
Tumblr media
If I were to change anything about Para-Goom, though, it would be its name. This is NO Goom! Not at all! Pirate Goom and Wanderin’ Goom, those are Gooms! Little chestnut-based guys. But Para-Goom is not chestnut in the slightest, and in fact, its Japanese name indicates no connection at all! Someone on the English localization team REALLY wanted to call this a Goom against all better judgement. And a whole team went along with it. Was it an honest mistake? Was it done with malicious intent? Do you think anyone who had a hand in this naming still thinks about it to this day?
Probably not... but for all we know, the name “Para-Goom” may be someone’s biggest regret in life! If you ever get the opportunity to name funny creatures, do not take the responsibility lightly!

Name: Wanderin’ Goom
Debut: Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
Everyone knows Goombas. Many know Galoombas. A handful know Goombrats. A few know Goombuds. The truly worthy know Goombos. But wouldn’t you know, that’s still not all the Goomba-like creatures in the Marioverse!
Here we have the Wanderin’ Goom, the most anatomically divergent of all- looking more like a bun with sesame seeds than a Goomba- but its name suggests at least SOME relation.
Tumblr media
You may notice that Wanderin’ Goom radiates no malice whatsoever. No fangs, no angry eyebrows, not even a frown! And that’s intentional, because these are 100% harmless. As dangerous as a baby manatee. I was going to just say manatee, but I suppose a manatee COULD theoretically cause you harm, it it were to somehow be dropped on you, so. Baby manatee.
Tumblr media
So basically, this is the perfect creature to serve as the Goomba of a Wario game! I don’t think this legally qualifies as an enemy at all. This is just an innocent creature trying to live its life and avoid predators, but Wario is the apex predator in any habitat he enters!
The first Wario Land really does a great job of feeling like a “corrupt” Mario game. All the elements of a Mario game are there, like platforming and little creatures to bop and blocks to get goodies from and silly music, but it’s all just off. Wario is slow and lumbering and solves his problems with violence rather than agility. The little creatures fear HIM. The blocks are sentient, and NOT happy about being hit. And the music is... well, it’s definitely music for Wario to jaunt around to!
I’d consider Wario Land to be a flawless series, where even the least enjoyable can be described as “really great” at the absolute worst. And I do not consider Master of Disguise to be part of this series. Not even with the funny ghost dolphins.
But as I was saying! All the Wario Land games are great, but as the sequels developed the series’ unique identity, the first one remains the one that feels most like an “anti” Mario game. Try it if you haven’t!

Name: Marumen
Debut: Wario Land 4
As we all know, every game needs a basic little enemy that poses little to no threat. As we also know, no creature is safe from Wario. Marumen is no exception. Poor, poor, Marumen.
Marumen is round. Its body is round, its eyes are round, its face is round, and its feet are probably round if you’re looking from the right angle. Its name even means “circle face”! Marumen’s entire identity revolves around being round. A real little lump of a creature. No sharp edges here! Marumen is safe for your child to play with.
Just like Wanderin’ Goom before it, Marumen could not inflict any harm if it tried. It can’t punch or bite, that’s for sure, and I don’t think it’s fast enough to charge or kick, either. I guess it could step on your foot, but I doubt that would hurt, and I’m sure it would never try any of this, either! It just wants to hang around, being round! The only situations in which I can envision Marumen being dangerous is if you tripped over it, which knocks it back anyway, or if you choked on it, in which case your throat would need to have a diameter of, like, a meter, probably.
Tumblr media
As stated previously, however, this is Wario’s game. Wario does what he wants. Marumen contains money, just like living creatures often inexplicably do, and Wario wants it. And goodness! Look at the way its eyes bug out! It did not expect this development at all! Marumen just wants to see the good in people, even if they have a clearly evil mustache!
Red Marumen exist, but that’s not an angry one, or anything. They just change color when Wario ground pounds near them. Purple ones give two small coins, while red ones give one bronze coin. Which is better? I don’t know! I’m just trying to justify the existence of the red one over here!
