JUST. RUSTBELT. THINGS.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that the LF had been a trial and a half getting off and on when I switched over to my snows. I didn’t feel great about it, so I was gonna see how it felt and retorque. This was in the middle of my Expensive Car Surgery Adventure while he was home for a week, so it ended up that most of my “keep an eye on this” miles were not driven by me, but by the shop doing test drives, LOL. They didn’t notice anything, because they don’t know him, but familiarity with how the road should feel + familiarity with how the car should feel = I was pretty sure after I got him back something wasn’t QUITE right.

So I took the wheel off and spent some quality time brushing the rust out of the studs and in the centers of the lug nuts. Rinse and repeat until all lugs twisted on to satisfaction, torque to 45, then to 89. And LO. AND BEHOLD. Mini vibration gone. I kind of felt like a NASCAR driver dreaming up a vibration with 5 to go while leading, but I honestly do not think I’m just placebo effecting myself here.

This feels especially gratifying because this past spring a lugnut fiasco shore three of my studs of at highway speed and that was. Not fun!!! So I feel like I’ve learned from past mistakes. 

Though to be honest I’ll also say that I just assumed that vibration was bad roads, which I think is an incredibly valid argument for why road maintenance is a safety issue. The roads where I live now are beautiful!

A Dodge Ram needs a new wheel bearing. 

This week, we performed diagnostic testing on the truck, which was towed in. Its anti-lock braking system (ABS) light and traction light are on.

The hub bearing is shifting when the wheel and rotor move from side to side. This movement caused damage to components, like an axle and brake caliper.

If you don't know the name of a part or how to search for it, but know of something similar that does, then search for replacement parts for that one thing. Eventually(!) as you scroll through the catalogue you'll see what you need and find out the real proper name for it so you aren't searching for things like "mounting rotational platform on wheels like cars but smaller" when obviously what you are forgetting is the name of "wheel hub with bearings" even though you might be a semi-professional engineer and have used them dozens, or perhaps hundreds, of times...

can u tell us more abt al and smunker lore!!

its not really anything tangible or even interesting its just the current backdrop for my little continuous daydream i explore before sleeps

Foundational info:

(in past) Cow Al is struggling to recover from emotional crisis experienced in college (traumatic relationship), + tries to hold down some jawb but finds himself unable to stay in that environment away from home (none of his "friends" acknowledge the turmoil which makes him feel more lost), + moves back to family farm.

He likes doing different kinds of manual jobs which are always needed around + he does have that "my parents are my best friends" thing going on so he kind of just stays there to present day.

He lives in a little, idk what else to call it but a mobile home, but its the longer rectangular ones ykwim, some ways off the main Hub. (Also there's lots of focus on community in my furryverse + there's lots of non al family furs living in and working on the place + sharing resources and work and such. Its not a HUGE place but its big ^_^)

Anyway, Smunker moves in to the little forest that you cld walk to from the farm area. He lives in a little sunken tree stump den thing hee heeeee. Not many other furs live there, + there's actually more Lesser Animals (what i call just regular non furry animals) present

The two of em meet at a grocery store, there was a relevant little point here that I forgot, which was that one of em wasn't even supposed to be there that first day for (x reason). Whatever.

The area that Cow Al lives in doesn't have very many Different looking furs. Al's family is actually all natural colors too. So he sees this pink smunk and goes a little insane (positive) (he promises later its not just because smunker looks different, but it was what drew his eye) but they never really interact (al keeps going to that same store Just In Case lol) until one day (cliche incoming) the little wheeled ladder that helps smaller furs get to higher shelves isn't available + he gets to help smunker get something from high up (he all but runs to be able to be the person to do this LOL)

Al actually has game + is confident, he's just out of practice from prior Events. He loves being social and misses making/being able to make friends so he does in fact manage to build up on interactions with Smunker...they become friends ➡️ realize they live close to each other.

Al actually accidentally damages smunker's home at some point by accident, + houses them while it's fixed, and there's another instance where smunker gets his leg caught in an illegal bear/foot trap on the walk back home at night, and then Al is also adamant on keeping an eye on him while he heals (+ is also the one who had to go help him get out of said trap...its literally a whole dramatic thing.)

I think I'm keeping both of these events as canon because it leads to the funny little situation of Al being like no wayyyyy i actually for real like this guy now that we've spent more time together like this...i need him to sleep on my belly to live :3 and cant stop having weird dreams about him. Idk if he feels the same. heeeeeeeeeelp. While skunker is like. Im for real going to kill myself for inconveniencing this person. He probably thinks im the biggest nuisance ever. I've overstayed my welcome for sure.

I haven't yet decided on the event that gets em Together. Might just be a little "date" at nearby ducky pond or something LOL. Skunker is shocked either way like huhh I didn't even know you liked me... Al has to get used to having a small partner again + navigate a relationship that doesn't suck ass again. Smunker has to get used to having big nice bf who cares about them. They like each other

She waits. 

There in the darkness between the heavens and the Earth, alone in a sky filled with stars, she hangs like a raindrop waiting to fall. Inside, earthlight filters through fused quartz windows, casting long shadows across her corridors. Everything is still, like the chill air just before the snow.

Anticipating.

Then somewhere down on the planet below a door closes, and from deep within her a single system stirs. Hums of electricity buzz through her little by little, carrying messages with it:

- Boot: temperature control -

- Boot: oxygen filtration -

- Boot: air circulation - 

From her outer wheel there’s a click and then a whir; gears shift and begin to turn, and a cable starts to wind. Round and round, more and more, she pulls on a weight that by rights she shouldn’t know up here; a weight that’s lessening, lighter and lighter until there is no weight. Still she winds, until eventually the spinning gears slow, and there is a satisfying thunk as her safety clamps find home.

It’s time.

Banks of solid state LEDs flicker on to light the way. Her airlock doors open with a satisfying swoosh, and he’s here. The one she’s been waiting for.

The Voice.

He doesn’t come in right away but instead lingers in the doorway, tracing his fingers around the edge, as if to confirm its solidity. There are parts of her that he’s seen before, some he’s even had a hand in creating, but this is the first time he’s seen her intact.

Whole.

Hello, old new friend.

Finally he pulls himself forwards and floats into the main ring, following her coloured lines as he glides from panel to panel, room to room, getting his bearings. He keeps his helmet on for now - safety protocols are priority one - but he touches everything, committing it to memory, and in doing so he breathes life into her, making her much more than an assembly of parts; more than metal and glass. 

Making her real.

By the gleam in his eyes, he feels it too.

At last he reaches the central hub, where her 3D planetary display sits serene, illuminated all in blue, imitating the planet itself. 

Without hesitating, he brings up a side display and flicks through to find what he needs. He moves confidently over the controls, accessing menus, running checks; fingers breezing over the console as if he’d been doing this his whole life.  Perhaps in a certain way he has, but only ever in his dreams before today.

- Status: All life support systems nominal - 

He takes a deep breath and, letting it out slowly, removes his helmet. 

A moment. 

Two. 

A breath.

“I’m home,” he murmurs, smiling softly.

...Welcome home.

“How’s it looking up there, John?” comes a commanding voice, young but full of authority. “Everything go okay?”

“FAB,” The Voice - Her Voice - replies, his tone professional, but with an undertone of pride.

What some call Religious Fundamentalism -- whether it is or not, depends on where you're standing.

It is knowing that Jesus could return tomorrow. It is knowing that heaven and hell are real. It is cutting all the skeletons and Harry Potters out of the LEGO catalogue. It is wondering if that sound in your humidifier is a demon. It is praying for everyone to be saved. It is hearing your father pray in the language of angels every morning. It is your mother singing in tongues and then translating for you, all to tell you that Jesus loves the little children. It is Larry Norman and Phil Keaggy and Barry McGuire on the stereo. It is the experiential knowledge that miracles happen, that legs regrow and tumors shrink. It is prayers for sweet dreams each night, prayers when you go to sleep happily and prayers when you wake up from nightmares. It is rebuking demons on Halloween after you give candy to the Spider-Man at your door. It is the red songbook with the Jesus fish on the cover, with To God Be the Glory and Turn Turn Turn. It is Prayer Bear and VeggieTales and The Donut Man, it is GT and the Halo Express and Adventures in Odyssey. It is Young Earth, the pterodactyls flying above cowboys; it is Old Earth, the Big Bang bursting into void as Hugh Ross tells us what it means.

And now there's been some changes -- I've lost belief in Mokele-Mbembe, but gained at least a healthy agnosticism about Santa. I no longer consider Harry Potter inherently Satanic, but now consider A Voyage To Arcturus inherently Satanic. There's a give and take. But I stand on the same warm earth, rich with the promise of heaven and the pity of hell. Jesus is firm; that doesn't surprise me. What surprised me is all else that has stayed: the hippieness and fierceness and end-times-ness and the traditional and the subversive. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday today and forever, but even my childhood he has let me keep. At least in parts. And it strikes out like lightning on occasion from my words, and it isn't me, not really, it's my mother with her lilting lullaby voice that all the same spoke of heaven and hell and blood and martyrdom and love like consuming fire. It's she who planted these flowers which grow round the spokes of the wheel whose hub is God.
