Wednesday, October 18: Witchfynde, "Cry Wolf"
Cloak & Dagger was intended as a step forward for Witchfynde after years of business challenges left them without a singer or prospects: with a new frontman in tow, and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal giving way to simultaneously more accessible and more aggressive strands of metal, the band apparently aimed to marry the doom riffing of their first two records with a brighter and more energetic approach. And “Cry Wolf” reflected this by starting with a doomy scuzzy intro that brought back 1980 before Gra Scoresby’s drumming rapidly escalated the proceedings. But because this was Witchfynde, ambition was counteracted by haplessness, and the power of Trevor “Montalo” Taylor’s riffing was no match for the sheer ridiculousness that was Luther Beltz and his Salvation Army wailing. Presumably Beltz was brought in for his vocal range, but he was such an absurd performer and lyricist that Witchfynde became irrelevant and a bit of a laughingstock entirely because of him. His ludicrous and completely unearned hysteria made “Cry Wolf” feel more frantic than it really was, and actually literally hollering “not by the hair of my chinny chin chin” really took some nerve. Despite all of this, there was a sense of fun and vigor to the track- at least musically speaking these guys had it going on, and even the unctuous stench of their frontman couldn’t entirely negate that.

Wednesday, March 13: Axe Witch, "Just Another Lunatic"
One of the funnier things about the New Wave of British Heavy Metal was that right as the movement itself was mostly dying out, its sound and ethos was pulled through barely a year later by bands in other countries. Sweden in particular really vibed out on all things NWOBHM, as Heavy Load, 220 Volt, Torch, Overdrive and Axe Witch all emerged around the same time with rough but catchy heavy metal in the same spirit as late ‘70s England. The latter rolled out numbers like “Just Another Lunatic” with enough amateurish enthusiasm that it was incredibly easy to imagine them in some London bar opening up for Witchfynde, if not Saxon: the guitars were rough, ready and energetic, the vocals endearingly bushleague, and the whole thing just blasted off with an infectious enthusiasm that many subsequent groups have tried and failed to recreate.
