So, let’s do Ruri’s name.

Ruri’s name in Kanji is 黒咲 瑠璃, Kurosaki Ruri. Kurosaki means Obsidian, and Ruri means lapis lazuli (or just the azure color), but can also be used as:

common name for various blue thrushes (birds) in family Muscicapidae, such as the 大瑠璃 (ōruri, “blue and white flycatcher, Cyanoptila cyanomelana”) or 小瑠璃 (koruri, “Siberian blue robin, Larvivora cyane, syn. Luscinia cyane”)

This explains Ensemblue Robin, though that card is obviously based off the males of the various such species.

But.

黒咲, isn’t Kurosaki. It is a combination of 黒, kuro, black, and 咲, saki, blossom. So, Kurosaki siblings’ name isn’t obsidian, but black blossom.

The Kanji 瑠, ru, can also be read as ruri as its own, it means precious gem, or lapis lazuli specifically. The Kanji, 璃, ri, means glassy, but can also mean lapis lazuli. Ri sound also alludes to Kotori Mizuki, though her Kanji name is different (観月小鳥, Moon-viewing Little Bird). 

I’m guessing the naming here is mostly for the color, but the previous gem meaning is probably a reference to Merag from ZEXAL being a Rock Alien.

The “black blossom” here likely refers to 黒百合, kuroyuri, Fritillaria camschatcensis, from Japanese language of flowers. It means love, or curse. The Kanji 百合, yuri, means lily, but it can also be read as yuugo, Fusion (hence the pun being Yuri’s name, and its connection to Yugo). Black blossom can also refer to black rose in European language of flowers, which means death. This is because the Kanji 璃, ri, can also be read as Aki, as in Aki Izayoi.

Shun’s name is 黒咲 隼, Kurosaki Shun. 隼, shun, can also be read as hayabusa, and means falcon, though it is generally used for peregrine falcon specifically.

“Falcon” here likely refers to Stalin’s Falcons, given Shun’s Communist theming, but due to the spirit theming going on with Ruri, and Yuto, it might also be referring to ka in Egyptian Religion, the origin of Duel Monsters. In European, and Asian symbolism, falcons generally represent nobility, which is ironic in Shun’s case, until you release before being a full blown revolutionary due to interdimensional, Shun was basically a upper class nobleman, forced to take arms, eventually liking the idea of overthrowing the system that fed him.

Bonus round:

Yuto’s name is ユート, which can be pronounced as Yuuto, but the official romanization of Ute is more correct, though Uto might be the most correct romanization in the following context. Proper Katakana spelling is ユウト, the reason why ARC-V went with this alternate spelling is because of the Katakana spelling of ユートピア, Utopia, which is the localized name of Number 39: King of Hope, Hope, which is used in the Japanese name of.Hyper Rank-Up-Magic Utopiforce (ハイパーランクアップマジック－ユートピア・フォース/HRUM－ユートピア・フォース). So this specific (mis)spelling alludes Yuma.

Since there is no Kanji here, we have to speculate:

**The “to” part in Yuto can mean person (人), which is used Seto Kaiba’s Japanese name, but can also mean to fly (翔), alluding to En Birds, and Yuma’s Pegasus theming, or (斗), Big Dipper, alluding to Barians, and Xyz Summoning in general. 

The Kanji 人, can also mean another person, or humanity in general among other things.

It can also allude to phantoms (fantomu), ghosts (gosto), or spirits (supirito), but also knights (naito), and night (again, naito). Since the “ya” part in Yuya’s name can be read as night, this means Yuto would be another way of saying Yuya.

So, Yuto would be just another Yuya, more associated with En Birds, knights, phantoms, and Xyz Summoning. Well, this describes him well enough.

“to” can also mean “and”, so I guess Yuya and another Yuya meaning can be gleamed.

“to” is also repeating sound in both Shun, and Ruri’s Decks.

I don’t why Yuto, and Ruri’s names, much like their Decks, specifically allude to Yuma, and Kotori, since other pairs don’t specifically allude to their past counterparts. This might be due to the fact that ZEXAL was the most recent series, thus the most fresh one on people’s memories at the time of ARC-V’s airing.

Another reason might be Konami themselves, who constantly pair up Yuya with other “red” protags, ie. Yuma, and Judai, due to their obvious parallels (hence why many promos feature them together, consider for example Hope Magician). But it is pretty obvious Katsumi Ono, the director of ARC-V, wanted to Yuya to eventually develop into a middle ground between Yugi, and Yusei, instead of being stuck as the deconstruction of Judai, which Ono likely intended to be merely the starting point of Yuya (and as a middle finger to GX fans like me who left the franchise during the 5D’s era). This did not materialize (because of the show’s internal troubles), and I’m very skeptical about Konami getting Ono’s original vision.

Of course this also makes me wonder what would a Ono-directed ZEXAL look like. Here’s a free reboot idea for you Konami.

Yu Gi Oh Shugo Chara Crossover. Who gets a Gaurdian Character. Who is the best … Uh, card player? Card person? … All I know about Yu Gi Oh is that the Dark Magician Girl card had a cute design.

I mean when you think about it, wouldn't Atem be Yugi's guardian character? Albeit a murderous one to start with, and even after character development--(/yeeted)

Seriously, though! Anzu would definitely have a ballerina, somewhat girly guardian character, given her dream to be a dancer and how the show portrays her as a somewhat of a 'tomboy' (by 2000s standards, anyways). I feel like her chara's name would be Yoko with the kanji: 謡子

Shizuka, who's portrayed as a meek, sweet girl would definitely have a 'punk'-ish, rebellious guardian character. Why? Because as quiet and as shy as Shizuka is made out to be, there's at least two instances in the anime where someone tells her not to do the Thing and she straight up does the Thing right in front of them! Granted, it ended badly in one particular case, but Shizuka is a lot more rebellious than you'd initially think for a formerly blind girl. (Or maybe she's rebellious because of being a formerly blind girl! That's my interpretation.) But I digress, Shizuka's guardian character would be called Eiko with the kanji: 江威子

As for Shugo Chara characters that would be good duelists? Ikuto and Kukai, hands down. They'd both run powerful decks, but Ikuto would particularly focus on handtraps and causing his opponents to brick constantly, while Kukai would be more of a brute force player, dive right in and hit you as hard and as fast as possible.

Yaya, I think, would also be a wildcard. I feel as though she'd pull off a Meffly or Marincess deck with devastating results if she had the inclination for it! Utau would run a Trickstar deck, but I'm not so sure she'd take the game seriously unless she had to, i.e. a life or death situation. (So, par for the course in YGO, whoops)

What are your thoughts on Yuamu being the first anime YGO female lead to have the "Yū (game)" kanji?

(I specifically said "lead" and "anime" because I recently discovered some info about an ongoing manga called Yu-Gi-Oh! OCG Structures; its protagonist, Shoma Yusa, has an older sister named Ageha. This makes her the first manga-exclusive YGO female character AND the first YGO character overall to have the "Yū" kanji. I'm not sure if she is the main lead or a supporting character in it because I have yet to read it and there are also two other significant female characters: Ms. Guide and Light Tsukiko.)

I say, it’s about darn time this happened! Bridge is treating the franchise well!

Listen. All I'm saying is—

Cardcaptor Shizuka AU.

Everything in YGO canon remains the same except Shizuka, age 13, finds the book of Clow Cards in her grandma's old library and manages to open it. Cards scatter everywhere in a huge gust of wind, and a golden lion currently taking the form of a little plush toy awakens.

Only Shizuka can't really see him very well, because this is before she has her surgery. (And before her surgery is even on the table, really.)

Like, okay, she can kind of see him. She can see that there is a blurry mass of yellow floating in her face, and since her hearing is fine, she knows that thick Osakan accent is coming from the blurry yellow mass. But that's about it.

"If ya can't see, what were you doin' in a library?" the yellow mass, who has introduced himself as Keroberos, demands.

"Some of Grandma's books are in braille. I was looking for one of those," Shizuka says, although that's not really true. Something was calling to her in the library, something she couldn't quite put her finger on. Something wanted her to open that book.

"Well, I never thought the Cardcaptor would be blind," Keroberos—and really Shizuka thinks she might call him Kero-san for short—says. "But where there's a will, there's a way. Congratulations, kid—you're the new Cardcaptor!"

Of course, Shizuka has no idea what that means, but she soon finds out.

See, at first Shizuka protests because she doesn't have magical powers. Kero-san ("It's Keroberos!") is mistaken. When he points out that she couldn't have opened the book without magic, she reminds him that she's legally blind and will eventually lose her sight completely.

"Don't worry, I'll direct you. Just consider me your seeing-eye Clow guardian," Kero-san says.

And direct her he does, because when the Clow Cards start causing trouble around Hanafuda City—well, someone has to deal with them, and Shizuka is the only magical girl around. It's far from easy, but with Kero-san acting as her eyes and her staff in hand, Shizuka manages to capture The Windy, The Watery, The Mirror, The Jump, The Fly, The Shadow, and The Shield before her brother calls.

Because that's the thing with this AU: it overlaps with Battle City.

Thankfully, there are no Card crises while Shizuka has her surgery or during her recovery. The biggest challenges are the lengths of time that Kero-san has to pretend to be a plush toy, something that gets exponentially worse for him when Honda and Otogi pick Shizuka up from the hospital and take her to meet with the rest of the group.

The idea here is . . . Kero would absolutely recognize the Millennium magic as magic, and as powerful and tbh evil magic at that, much different than what Shizuka can do and more than she can tackle at the moment with her limited cards. There are times when I think Shizuka would still be tempted to try to do something, anything, but ultimately she would keep her magic secret and vow to get the rest of the Cards and learn more magic so the next time something like this happens, she CAN help.

That said, people who can sense her magic even if they can't quite pinpoint it are: Atem, Yuugi, Bakura, Ring Spirit, Malik, Isis

People who are suspicious af about Kero are: Jounouchi

People who think Jounouchi is being stupid by being suspicious of a plush toy are: Honda, Otogi, Anzu

People who secretly think Kero is cute and wish they had a plush toy of their own are: Mokuba

Anyway, when Battle City is over, the reason Shizuka doesn't join the rest for the Millennium World arc is because she had to return to Cardcapting (and also middle school). She does get the rest of the Cards and becomes their master. I don't know where Yue fits into this, but I imagine he must be someone also in Hanafuda.

A couple other things:

— I don't know how possible this is because I've never used one, but I like to imagine Shizuka would use a braille writer to put her name on the cards in kantenji (a.k.a. braille kanji), especially since her first handful of cards were before her surgery. Like I don't know if you could stick cards into a braille writer, but also this is a story about magic cards so let's go with it.

— I do think Shizuka does eventually tell at least Jounouchi about her magic. Or like I think she'd show him, perhaps with a card like The Glow. He mighr freak a bit at first because he hates occult stuff, but this isn't any more occult than Atem, a literal actual ghost, was so he'd be fine after a second, especially since The Glow is really pretty. Plus his baby sis is a superhero!! How cool is that??

— Kero and Jounouchi have a lot of personality traits in common, so tbh I think they'd get along even if they occasionally butt heads. More importantly though, Kero would remind Shizuka of her brother which means he would be a good guardian for her.

Anyway, I just think Shizuka deserved more than whar canon gave her, that she's every bit as brave and strong as her big brother (even if in a quieter way) and that she deserved more time to shine, so. Cardcaptor Shizuka was definitely happening behind the scenes and no one can convince me otherwise.

Jushin Tiger & this episode’s theme

This SEVENS episode is actually a whole bunch of parodies and references to really old mecha/superhero/magical girl anime & tokusatsu shows. I can’t catch all of them, unfortunately, as I don’t have a huge grasp on the genre (especially for some of these references being for super-old 70s or 80s shows), but I can try my best to point some of them out.

The most obvious being that Jushin Tiger is a reference to a series named Jushin Liger, which aired in the 90s. Then there’s Romin, who’s a reference to Saint Tail, and Mimi, who is a reference to Miss America.

I’m told the opening narration of “this is a tale of...” may be a reference to Brave Exkaiser (or any of the other Brave series) which started their episodes this way.

There are other things in the episode, like references to Astroboy, Tekkaman Blade, Gridman, Metal Hero, and Devilman. Again, I can’t catch all of them, unfortunately, but hopefully someone else will and can compile a much more comprehensive list.

Original YGO Duel Monsters reference

Now this is something I can catch.

The sequence where Sevens Road Paladin attacks and destroys Umbrlancer F and Dragiastar F are a reference to episode 134 of the original Duel Monsters series, where Atem defeats Kaiba in the Battle City semi-finals at the last minute with Dark Paladin, using “Diffusion Wave-Motion”!

Yuuga here uses “Diffusion Solitary-Motion”, but the obvious Paladin naming should already give it away. Sevens Paladin and Dark Paladin also both had 3900 starting ATK for the sequence (before going higher), and Atem shouts the same attack name as Yuuga does, minus one different kanji.

Atem:  超魔導烈波斬 -> “Beyond Magic! Fierce Slashing Wave!” Yuuga: 七魔導烈波斬 -> “Sevens Magic! Fierce Slashing Wave!”

Regarding Official Releases of SEVENS

I actually want to address something while I still have time, considering how Rush Duels are ramping up in the West, and we are expected to see a dub announcement sometime soon, possibly in the next two months.

If there is an official dub announced for the West, I will still be subbing this series. However.

If there is a simulcast of SEVENS announced (as in, official subs from Konami Cross Media via Crunchyroll that get updated weekly, just like what happened with VRAINS), I will stop subbing the series. At that point, there is a much more accessible sub that is official and made by people who are paid to do so. This team is but a group of volunteers at the end of the day and we cannot compete.

Unless the subs are really bad for some strange reason, that will be the end of entameSubs, and it was a very, very fun ride while it lasted! I expected to hit this roadblock someday, and it seems we’re finally coming up to it. (And yes, in the event of us shutting down because of an official simulcast, I will 100% be redirecting my efforts to the BD instead.)

Of course, this is all just hypothetical for now, as there has been no official simulcast or subs announced, so we just have to wait and see. 

But I want to say this now just in case I don’t get the chance to later.

Pinching a friend's description from the ygo server but basically Mao is a popular name given to specifically toei/season 0 yami by the japanese fandom.

To quote the friend, Mao means king "but in an Evil Way™ -- YGO Mao(h) has two kanji for devil/demon and king"

So it's a kind of play on name for him during that more gremlin span of time which imo is just super cute and I'm incredibly fond of it XD

So, let’s do Yuma’s name as well.

Yuma’s Surname is 九十九, Tsukumo. This is literally the Kanji writing of the number 99, alluding to the Number cards besides Numeron Dragon, and Barian Numbers. For each individual Kanji:

** 十 , Tsu literally means 10. tsu by its own doesn’t mean much, though it is used many other Japanese words.

** 九, Ku means literally 9, but it can also mean suffering, so it is generally spelled as kyuu instead. Same goes for 4 (gon instead of shi), and 7 (nana instead of shichi). But it also refers to some Buddhist concepts:

[noun] (Buddhism) (by extension) one's speech, one's words

[noun] (Buddhism) dukkha

**Mo sound is not in the Kanji spelling, because it means repetition. Tsukumo literally means 90 and 9, whereas the actual spelling of the Kanji would be kyuu juu kyuu, 9 10 9.

**The spelling, Tsukumo, has the word kumo (spider) in it, which can also be spelled as gumo, hence Kyoji Yagumo’s existence in the ZEXAL manga. Kumo can also mean clouds, and by proxy refer to the Sky. Tsuku-ru can also mean making, or creation, which refers to ZEXAL Creation ability of ZEXAL.

Interestingly, though Yuma’s name ends with “o”, it does not contain the “ou/oh” (King) sound in Yugi Muto, or Yusei Fudo. I don’t why this is the case, since Utopia’s Japanese name repeats the ou sound twice (Kibo no O, Hope, or King of Hope, Hope).

**遊, yu Kanji is the standard play Kanji for all Yu-Gi-Oh! protagonists.

**馬, ma Kanji literally means horse, in reference to uma. This specific Kanji is more commonly used in Shogi pieces, though, which explains Hishaku from ZEXAL manga’s existence. The ma Kanji used in the Shogi pieces, keima, katsura horse, and ryuma, dragon horse. Keima can be promoted to narikei (promoted katsura), and ryoma is a promotion of kakugyo (angle mover).

The promotion gimmick of Shogi here is likely alluded to for the Rank-Up gimmick of Xyz Monsters, though that specific in-game is actually a continuation of Level Up gimmick of LV monsters, so the symbolic meaning of Yugi’s LV monsters are transferred here.

Within the card game lore, though, Yuma’s horse motif is generally represented by a unicorn (ZW- Unicorn Spear, who is actually an alicorn), pegasus (ZW-Pegasus Twin Saber, or Anna’s Flying Pegasus Railroad Stampede, which literally features Anna riding Yuma), or Sleipnir (ZW-Sleipnir Mail). 

Pegasus is a somewhat repeating theme in ZEXAL, consider for example Durbe’s horse Mach, and his Number, Number 44: Sky Pegasus. It is likely meant to evoke the meaning of horses ridden by legendary heroes, and demigods, though in Yuma’s case it refers to Pegasus Seiya, titular character of Saint Seiya, who is the ZEXAL form’s inspiration. Horse motif might also be reference to Messianic figures associated with it, such as Kalki, or Mahdi in various Islamic sects. Pegasus is also a constellation, hence the space theming in Xyz Monsters, and ZEXAL in-general.

A bit more to ponder in the ma Kanji, it can also be spelled as me, which means Yuuma can be spelled as Yuume, which is similar to Yume, dream. Likely referring to how Numbers manifest into people’s desires. “Ma” in the context of Yu-Gi-Oh! also refers to the other Ma Kanji  魔, which can mean demon, or magic, likely alluding to the nature of Yuma as a vessel of a piece of Don Thousand.

There are probably more obtuse puns I’m missing, but this is all I have got by wiki skimming.

hello, completely out of the blue anon here, just wondering: on your about page it says that you're "self-taught" when it comes to japanese. as a native english speaker who so very badly wants to start teaching herself japanese, but hasn't a clue where to even begin, do you have any tips at all to help me get started? any advice would be appreciated, thank you so much

Hello anon! So, what I did—and I don’t know how well this would work for anyone else—is in middle school, I bought myself a volume of the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga in Japanese, thinking that well, I would look at the pretty pictures. But when it arrived, I noticed it had furigana, which are kana (one of Japan’s two syllable-based alphabets) written next to kanji (the characters of Chinese origin that represent entire words), which meant that I could look up the words much more easily than I expected to be able to.

So I got myself a dictionary and just... started trying to read it??

Before this point, I guess, I’d already been printing out lyrics from animelyrics.com, the English and the romanization of the Japanese side-by-side, and comparing the two to explore grammar and pick up vocabulary. Reading the YGO manga was kind of the next step. I found some grammar guides online; one on particles and one on verb conjugation will get you pretty damn far, it turns out. Printed out those, too. I translated them, in fact—first writing out the romanization of the Japanese, then substituting the English words into Japanese sentence structure, and finally writing out the sentences in English.

This is great for vocabulary, for picking up grammar (and not-too-textbook grammar, too, though manga grammar is still not the same as actual spoken Japanese, any more than comic book grammar would be spoken English), and learning to recognize kanji. And it has the advantage of—as long as you like the source material, and your brain works somewhat similarly to mine—being quite fun. It’s like a puzzle. I love comparing how an idea would be conveyed in Japanese vs how I convey it in English. I love noticing how words are used, how sentences are formed.

This is just the starting point, obviously. It’s lacking quite badly in the spoken language department. For that, you do actually have to talk to people. To native speakers, preferably. I was lucky in that I did have access to Japanese classes in high school and majored in it in college (though I describe myself as self-taught because I spent most of my classes ahead of the material, reading novels in year two lecture for example...) Anyway, speaking is where my skills fall off most quickly when I’m not putting explicit energy into maintaining them, and it doesn’t help that even in English I find it a struggle to express my thoughts fully out loud. I don’t uhhhh enjoy socializing or making mistakes, which makes spoken foreign language really difficult for me in particular! I hope that’s something that comes more naturally to you, and I feel like there are sites online where you can connect with native speakers in a casual language exchange-type situation, but I admit I don’t know what they are...

This isn’t a direct answer to your question, but a Japanese youtuber named Jun (you may know him from cooking with his cats) did a series on how he went from abysmal marks in mandatory high school English class to majoring in English in college and speaking it confidently now. I recommend the series because it shows an extracurricular way to look at language learning while also discussing what an odd language pair English and Japanese are. It was really interesting to me as someone who did the same thing essentially in reverse. The first of the series is here.

I hope some if that is helpful! Really, my main advice is to find a way that keeps your interest. For me, it was reading YGO, because I already knew that 4Kids was only ever going to lie to me, so I was going to have to do things on my own. It might be something different for you!

Like the Thief King, Kisara is a Kul Elna survivor, having been sealed with her siblings in a box of household objects whilst the massacre took place. (Alexander the Great must have given them a nasty shock 7 centuries later...) While the campaign had been kept from public and patricians alike, the rumours of pale, supernaturally powered vengeful spirits took hold quickly. Kisara had no clue that the slaughter took place for the sake of the millennium items' creation—as such, she had no fear upon witnessing them being wielded. However, after years of being hounded, she lacked fear anyway—she knew well that sooner or later, she'd be killed. Her survival instinct, comprising the great majority of her ba, was so deeply buried that it could only manifest when she entered any altered state of consciousness.

I definitely vibe with Malik a lot, and as a kid I really loved his character because I could relate to his situation a little bit. Basically, I was just super sheltered and homeschooled, and felt trapped in my home with my siblings lol. Also he’s a bitch like me
