Y’all. Are you ready for story time? So my Polish Couchsurfing host asks me if I wanted to go to his mom’s house to have traditional Polish food. Ummm… Yes! Of course! He then tells me they’re having Żurek and not everyone likes it and it’s an acquired taste. Okay. Bring it on. I’ve eaten 4 servings of yogurt for lunch in one sitting because that’s the healthiest thing I could find in the countryside. It can’t be THAT bad. I meet my friend’s mom, his sister and her husband. The table is set, an extra plate for me. I sit down, and everyone watches me as I try this soup. I lift the spoon, scoop a spoonful and place it into my mouth. They ask me if I like it. I don’t react. You know when dogs are confused and cock their head to the side? That’s what I did. And I said I really didn’t know. The flavor profiles I like are salty or sweet. I don’t like things that are bitter, sour or tangy. And this soup was ALL those things. I tried more, several spoonfuls more to determine if I liked it. After about the 8th spoonful, I decided I didn’t like it, but it was edible. So I loaded my soup with potatoes and eggs to drown out the flavor of the soup and finished it. Even more edible with less soup to solids ratio. I mean, I wasn’t going to lie and say I liked the soup when my face clearly showed I didn’t. But the family was chill about it and we laughed about it. They even asked if I wanted seconds and I said Nooooo Thank you! Haha We don’t have to like everything we try, but at least we can be open to new things, trying them once and deciding from our personal experience whether something is for us or not. Making lots of soups to freeze today starting with żurek (a Polish Rye sour soup), then Latvian Skabenu natru zupa (sorrel and nettle soup and will just need the hard boiled eggs to go onto it when I am ready to eat it) and a second chicken bone broth for rosół (chicken soup) that I am going to add haluşka dumplings to. I have a fourth basic vegetable soup that I will finish tomorrow and that one I will can. I’ll be good for a while with all of this stuff and can share with the neighbors if the get stuck in a bind with food.
