anyway wasn’t Eurovision 2018 kind of a rehash of Eurovision 2017
i mean, we had:
• the one kooky act that everyone thought was gonna win
Tumblr media
• that one man from a Finno-Ugric nation that was lowkey voted by some just for the memes
Tumblr media
• the token ethno qualifier
Tumblr media
• a female act that was intruded but kept classy after that and finished with grace
Tumblr media
• the most robbed of qualification act of the year (preferably a blonde female in a duo with an instrumentalist guy)
Tumblr media
• the one female who would’ve done better if their facial expressions wouldn’t have been awkward
Tumblr media
• a Baltic act that loves the color red
Tumblr media
• Moldova outmemeing themselves
Tumblr media
• Albania relying on their entrant doing well with the juries because of specific vocal curiosities
Tumblr media
• and finally, the jurywank/teleflop of the year

This is my Top 10 before and after LEP 2018. Italy and Sweden are now in my Top 10, while Denmark and Estonia fell out. I think my Top 4 will firmly stay as it is until rehearsals.

I am now VERY intrigued to say the least. I just hope that the theme of the staging fits the song, and that it won’t too busy to the point where Saara’s vocals will suffer.

ESC 2018 will be forever remembered as the year...
- Czech Republic’s Mikolas made us all crave his spaghetti and fluffy camel
- a fake Alekseev-Twitter account trolled us all (even the ESC participants themselves) but created the Balkan Boy™ in this process
- Norway blessed us with the return of the legendary cinnamon roll Rybak
- Albania finally didn’t send a screaming lady
- the mystified Bulgaria was first with the bookmakers for around 50 weeks, even though they hadn’t even released their song or artist
- Estonia broke the blond-brown-curse
- Germany sent a song that didn’t make them feel embarrassed
- Spain chose an adorable couple as their participants because the whole country shipped them hard
- Sweden sent a pop song which relied heavily on some kind of background prop… again
- Australia was still going strong and made a former interveal-act their entry
- Israel rocked all our minds with feminist chicken noises
- Azerbaijan selected a jazz singer but made her sing a standard pop song
- Belgium kept on giving us quality entries
- Saara Aalto finally became first in the Finnish preselection… and second… and third…
- Greece’s preselection kinda fell apart but they emerged from it with a killer song anyway
- Cyprus gave their song a Spanish title even though it only contains one Spanish word: the title
- Denmark sent a Game of Thrones character disguised as a peaceful viking
- Waylon used the “selection” of his ESC entry to promote his new album
- San Marino came up with their biggest preselection ever, which suddenly turned currupt and hence disappointed many people
- Hungary sent a metal song that was actually good
- Ukraine had to defy rumors of their withdrawal only to come back with a revamp that, for a change, didn’t destroy the original song at all
- UK started the “girl with pink hair, who is also a fomer Eurovision background singer”-trend, which was continued by Slovenia
- a considerable part of Europe fell in love with Italy’s Metamoro
- the favorite in Portugal’s national final left the competition because of the entry’s parallels to some religious song from Brazil; but everyone loved the song Portugal eventually chose anyway
- France presented us with the epitome of French elegance and a song that reflected an important current topic without rubbing it in our faces
- Latvia brought Brazil to the Eurovision Song Contest and competed with a song which could’ve been part of the “Fifty Shades” soundtrack
- Ireland had promised us a power ballad with a gospel feel that eventually neither was that powerful nor had a gospel feel
And last but not least:
- “the Russians” leaked all of the internally selected songs except for their own

Predictions for the Semi-Finals
Tumblr media
DISCLAIMER: This is just my personal insight, so I may be totally wrong with my predictions. Whether you agree or disagree with them, that’s totally fine. However, these can all change during the rehearsals.
SEMI-FINAL 1:
MOST PROBABLE QUALIFIERS:
ISRAEL and ESTONIA
MOST PROBABLE NON-QUALIFIERS:
ICELAND and CROATIA
SEMI-FINAL 2:
MOST PROBABLE QUALIFIERS:
SWEDEN, AUSTRALIA, NORWAY, UKRAINE, and THE NETHERLANDS
MOST PROBABLE NON-QUALIFIERS:
SAN MARINO and GEORGIA
For the countries not mentioned, it will all depend on who can deliver in their live performance, and who can make the most immediate impact to the juries and the televoters. I’m expecting some shock NQ’s this year (especially from the first semi-final).

I’ll probably gonna need a lot of tissues for the first semi-final. ‘Cause damn, it’s gonna be a very tough night for all of us.

Some Thoughts on the Running Order
Tumblr media
SEMI-FINAL 1:
It wasn’t what I hoped for, but Finland (my winner this year) got a good draw, getting sandwiched by two non-English ballads. I just think it could have been better in my opinion.
Bulgaria (my 2nd this year) performing right after Estonia can be problematic for them. It is a must that they nail their performance if they want to counter Elina’s impactful performance.
Cyprus got a great draw, but I’m not as optimistic as everyone else. Because being the closer of the show puts tremendous pressure on them to deliver. If Eleni’s performance underwhelms, then it could really sink them. Plus everyone might have decided their faves already by the time she performs.
I’m actually a bit worried about Belgium performing 4th. There is a chance that it might be forgotten because of the flurry of more “out there” songs performed after her. Sennek really needs to have a great performance to increase her chances of qualifying.
Czech Republic, Israel, Estonia, Ireland, and Switzerland got good draws.
I don’t know what to think about Austria’s and Greece’s draws. I think they are borderline (though I love Austria’s song, and I really like Greece’s), can go either way.
For now, I’m only confident about Israel and Estonia qualifying from that semi-final (not 100% confident though). It’s just gonna be a straight-up BLOODFEST in that semi-final, and we will have some shock NQ’s.
At the moment, it looks very bad for Iceland, Belarus, Lithuania, FYROM, and Croatia. It also looks problematic for Azerbaijan (will probably be severely overshadowed by much stronger songs).
SEMI-FINAL 2:
Australia, Sweden and Ukraine got great draws, so I’m confident that they will qualify.
Despite being the first to perform, I think Norway will do just fine. It’s Alexander Rybak after all. Plus they do have a have fun song, so I think the voters will remember this despite performing first.
Denmark, The Netherlands, Hungary, Slovenia got good draws in my opinion. I think Hungary and Slovenia in particular increased their chances of qualifying.
Meanwhile, it looks bad for Romania (performing after Alexander Rybak), Georgia, and Latvia (performing after a high-energy rock song). It also looks problematic for Montenegro (coming right after Sweden).
MAIN TAKEAWAY:
It will all still depend on the live performance (vocals and staging). Even if a country got a good draw, it can still flop if the live performance is subpar and underwhelming. However if the song is good and the performance has tremendous (and immediate) impact, it’s place in the running order wouldn’t matter that much even if it got a seemingly bad draw. So good luck to everyone!
