Shoving a spoonful of ice cream in his mouth, he let it rest on his tongue and melt, enjoying the cold feeling. He shrugged his left shoulder. At the moment he just wanted to pig out on junk food and not worry about eating real food, which at this point, sounded as appetizing as a dead rat.

Chucking, he nodded as he swallowed his mouthful of ice cream. “Sucks to be them, they can just suffer while we talk about how good/bad it is. But if everyone does finally get together than I’ll happily watch it again.”

“You know you’re going to have to eat something real too…cause I know you and I know that if you got pissed at your parents, you probably didn’t eat much dinner. Neither did Gin.” Mothering. It was a habit long ingrained in Trea. She had spent many years mothering her younger siblings and now, well, she had taken to mothering her niece and nephew. Because hey…someone had to.

“Neither have I. We all keep talking about watching it, but so far, no one’s schedules have synced up properly. Oh well. Now we’ll get to watch it and they all will miss out.”

Which meant that Trea would most likely be watching this movie at least twice more. But whatever. If it was as delightfully bad as it promised to be, that shouldn’t be a problem.

He wouldn’t be surprised if his dad was late, after all, he had waited longer and been disappointed. The main reason he was still sitting there was at least his dad always called if plans were canceled, and Owen wouldn’t leave him just waiting all night without a call, right?

His heart dropped as he saw his name flash across the screen of his phone. Why wasn’t he surprised? Leaning to rest his elbows on the table, Charlie pinched the bridge of his nose as he answered the phone and brought it to his ear.

“Please tell me you’re on your way and not canceling...”

He tried to hide the pain in his voice, he really did. Although Owen could probably tell. His dad was slick like that.

Ten minutes. 

He was only ten minutes late. 

That was okay, right?  There was still a grace period even when you already pushed plans back, right? 

Owen came close to actually asking his phone as his good hand worked to scroll to Charlie’s number.  He could see the Margaritaville sign not too far ahead, so there was a chance he could even intercept him on foot if not by cellular if he really had left at a strict 8 o’clock.  Ignoring the pain in his bandaged hand (Blue really didn’t like it when you fucked with her teeth), he figured a legit reason for tardiness would still be viewed as an excuse.  Better to stay mum, hide it in his pocket, and let the kid be angry.  He was entitled.

“Charrrrlie,  c’mon.  Pickuppickup.”
