Dean is a self-sacrificing hero, but there’s something so extra-poignant about how it went down in 13x05. He was doing the old Winchester desperation-move for the stuck-in-limbo spirits, sure.

And then Billie calls him on his reckless fatalism.

And we can almost hear the echo of early-seasons Bobby in our minds, Dean saying how (after sacrificing for Sam the way John did for him) that at least “this way, his life would mean something,” and Bobby shouting angrily, “and it didn’t before?”

Dean’s sacrifices aren’t just about abandonment or familial love. They’re also about this gaping feeling of failure and guilt. And searching for meaning/purpose as a bandaid for that feeling.

Dean was wounded by John sacrificing himself for him, feeling that wound like a giant hole (as he told Gordon, as famine later hints as representative of his depression). Dean had a general feeling of, “I’m not supposed to be here.”

There’s something of that in what he says to Billie, too. That this time it’s different, it’s something he won’t work through. Dean says, “I don’t matter.”

His (lack of) self-worth is a huge piece of his character.

See the thing is I think somebody should've made small talk with cas like "so who's your favorite singer?" and he would go "well I don't listen to much music but there was a man in ancient Mesopotamia who used to sing to the goats he herded. They didn't understand the words, of course, but they seemed to enjoy it all the same. I enjoyed sending pieces of my celestial consciousness to experience this from time to time" and they would go ".........okay then." Except for Dean, who would somehow be jealous

I actually vibe with Sam being doomed to become a perpetual third wheel in every scenario.

Because I too want friends but don’t want to put in the effort. I too have loner hobbies and bad vibes.

I was a decent leader/popular kid because I could game the hierarchy and excelled in competence-based activities. (Like teams, trivia, sports, etc. I’m counting hunting in this category).

That’s how we see Sam excel, in hunting pairs or hunting groups, in academics, in “coworker-style” relationships, even with his own family! He does okay with trauma-in-common and mentor-style stuff too, I guess.

But me and Sam aren’t built to hang out. We need the structure of task-driven hangouts.
