Do you have a dedicated monitoring channel? Here is an easy workflow tipp for switching between different monitoring modes: The first plug-in in my monitoring channel is sonarworks soundID as corrective room / headphone EQ. With this plug-in I can switch between the original sound of my room / headphones and an almost flat response. The second plug-in is a mid-range filter EQ I usually set up with a high pass (low cut) filter at about 400hz and a low pass (high cut) filter at about 8khz. This simulates small speakers like that old kitchen radio for example. I do spend a lot of time mixing with this filter turned on. The third plug-in is just a low-end filter EQ. It's just a low pass (high cut) filter at about 150hz. This helps a lot to check low-end stuff like comparing to references for example. By the way: what's also very helpful on the monitoring channel is a mono button. This settings for a monitoring channel are saved in my mixing and mastering templates. I need to switch back and forth real quick without setting up the filters when I need them. This would take too much time and effort and breaks the creative flow during the mixing sessions. Do you watch mixing tutorials? As I started mixing I was addicted to all kinds of mixing tipps, tutorials, YouTube videos and such. I always thought I had to do it "right" and strictly stuck to the do's and don'ts. "Don't compress more than..." "Never boost EQ's, rather cut..." "Never push the EQ band more than..." Today I know, you sometimes get the best results when you push it over the boundaries, when you almost destroy it sometimes. Good mixing doesn't mean that everything is done technically correct, it's an art form. The best art often is a result of doing something extrem that no one else would have done it like this. Keep the technicalities in mind as a tool box, but don't be afraid to try a hammer for a screw. Don't be afraid to be creative just because someone said "Don't do...". Do you use midi / vst instruments in your sessions? Here is why I'd recommend to print your final midi sections into audio: My problem was not enough CPU power to process multiple vst instruments in real time. I had to figure out a strategy to deal with that. I could freeze midi tracks or print them into audio. So one reason for turning midi into audio is saving CPU Power. But there is another good reason for this: it's about setting limits. Once you have printed your midi into audio you can't go back or change things afterwards that easy. You have to go with the audio files like you have to with organic recordings. Otherwise it's too easy to spend a lot of time with trying different things, changing them again and again and finally it's hard to finish a song, because you always think about how it would sound like with another kick or another synth bass. Dial in your vst instruments until you are happy with them and then print them down. A third reason is that you can always recall the sessions. Even when you don't have these earlier vst instruments or midi triggered samples anymore for what reason ever.
