guys.
so I started using this website https://www.trustedhousesitters.com/
where people who go on vacation need need a pet/housesitter. And I'm on it as someone who goes to people's houses to sit for them.
And I'm literally housesitting in OJAI taking care of HORSES AND DOGS I KID YOU NOT.
For those of you who don't remember. Ojai is where BoJack goes and finds Cuddly whiskers

its been a while since i rewatched bojack(more than a year??). i think i should rewatch it.
also as someone who maintained a bojack blog for tracking easter eggs and had 23k followers (before tumblr died) you know i have to be a huge fan.
Let me announce how much of a bojack fan/nerd I am. Something I’m almost too embarassed to tell friends, but I’ve probably watched each episode at least 10 times. The earlier seasons at this point I’ve probably watched 40 times since I’d keep watching them while waiting for the next season to come out.

Just finished this book. Very good important read. As someone from the bay area, I was very familiar with the setting and even remember voting to recall Judge Persky.
Strongly recommend! Have your sons and daughters read this too!

today is my last journaling.
i had the blood test in the morning. i was worried that would make me not be able to do pushups but it was fine. in the afternoon i sat in the car on the driveway to do work, which is what i usually do to warm my body up because my house is really cold. but today was 90 degrees so the car got hot. i think a combination of that and having some blood taken made me super tired in the evening and i ended up taking a nap at 5. i didnt have any meetings for work so today was pretty chill. i didnt exercise after work because of the temperature. i just watched a few episodes of the final season of f is for family. f is for family is one of the few shows that i followed, which makes me feel like a fan. otherwise most shows are just like they were already famous and suggested or ended already and im binging. versus f is for family is like bojack for me where i was literally watching since release of season 1. i think that makes me more connected to a show because im going thru it in “real time” and i enjoy having a year to think about what should/would happen. how the writers will write.
i feel like im on the journey along with the writers of how to figure out what will happen. f is for family was interesting though because i dont know what was going on but it was like 2 years between seasons, and there weren’t even that many episodes. i think i told people that f is for family got worse in later seasons like seasons 3 and 4. but as i was rewatching i think i enjoyed it a little more. so far i do really appreciate the final season. and this season is special because its the final season, so its not just like what are the writers going to write but how are they going to end the show. especially with these dark humor shows like bojack and f is for family is like “is the show going to have a happy ending or a sad ending???”.
we’ll see where the show goes. also diana is like the only person who watched through this whole show. its definitely a less common show. but even bojack pretty much everyone in avalon has watched it.
ok bye done with this journaling thing. good bye tumblr again

nothing much happened today. typical day at work. ran up to hunters point so i guess my knee is getting better. i really was not a fan of this bingo challenge thing but theres two things coming out of it that are good for me.
1. one of my things on my year in review presentation for atomic habits of 2021 was to do pushups every day. i hadn’t started that habit but this challenge has forced me to kick start it so im glad for that. pushups will hopefully help with my tennis too. i set a reminder on my phone to remember to do these things for a week because i know i would forget. ill keep the pushup reminder for now i guess.
2. the other good thing is i do need to clean up my desk. i guess its naturally going to be messy while im still in process of doing taxes and i have all these tax papers around me.
this is a really random thought. but i think before i said i would hit and run if i bumped into a parked car. but i realized its more coming from a place that i dont want to have to explain it to my parents. i think if i was a fully independent adult i would suck it up and leave a note because its kind of a dick move to make someone pay for a dent you made. but if the car already has a bunch of scratches then maybe they don’t care. its probably good to leave a note anyway. i think people would appreciate that. this reminds me of my insurance days. i forgot most of my auto insurance industry knowledge. it wasn’t the most comprehensive but probably at some point understood it better than the average person.
here’s a generally accepted fact. it’s good to shop around regularly. from my experience at my company i think we do factor in how long you’ve been at your last insurance company, and if you’ve been there less than 2 year then we count that as suss and will increase the rate we offer you. but otherwise you should shop around once in a while to see if you can get a better rate because in insurance there isn’t a “loyalty discount”. like we don’t care how long you’ve been here. our rates are based on factors we calculate as correlation to submitting a claim that we’ll have to pay out. and being a customer of 3 years doesn’t make any difference to us than a customer who’s been with us 10 years. but if you shop around, insurance companies will often give a new customer discount for the first term or two so you’ll save some money.
oh also if you think insurance is expensive. and that companies are just stealing your money. you can imagine how insurance works. like in the big picture we’re just pooling all this money from everyone and then if one person gets in an accident we use other people’s money to pay for it. theres some crazy claims out there that are millions of dollars. not sure why. maybe everyone in the other car broke their back and need PT for the rest of their life or something.
going to watch love is blind now

a few weeks ago i was at the mv tennis courts, hitting a ball against the wall. it was around 6:00 pm pst. the mv tennis team already finished up and people were trickling out, and i noticed this asian guy who looked in his 40 or 50s walk by with what looked like a tennis bag. but he kept walking through the courts out towards the track. that confused me a little. is he going to play tennis on the track or something? later on he walked by, to get something from his car in the parking lot? and he talked to me in chinese saying that theres courts at de anza where they have lights(theres no lights at the mv tennis courts) and that parking is free at de anza during this school year. it took a lot of brain power to reply to him in chinese in real time but i did it. it was a quick exchange maybe a minute long. i said something along the lines of “oh but de anza courts are usually filled”. later when i was done and heading towards my car to go home, i ran into him again. i guess he just kept walking back and forth between his car and the track? and he asked what my name was and was telling me how he also likes playing tennis and lots of people have been getting into it during pandemic. i wasn’t a fan of the interaction. he was a nice dad guy, but it irks me to talk to someone this much older who seems like a parent, especially when they are social and make you converse.
maybe a week later i was at the mv tracks running, and i saw him standing in the middle of field. he had his tennis bag. as i passed by while running he said “hey! david!” i didn’t even remember his name. maybe he didnt give it. i didnt ask for it.
“when you’re done running we can play some tennis!”
“haha yeah!”
i was terrified. i figured if i didnt stop running then he wouldn’t be able to play tennis with me. i ran 4 miles. the whole time he was either doing lunges around the field, or he was on his phone, it sounded like business calls. he spoke to the people in chinese though. and his tennis bag was there. for 4 miles of running, he was just there doing lunges and loitering. not playing tennis even though he had a tennis bag. not even at the tennis courts. i got tired and had to stop. i drank some water at the fountain and looked over yonder in his direction. he was still on the phone. phew. i rested a bit and figured i should leave sooner than later in case he sees that ive finished my run. i was paranoid that as i was getting in my car that he would be staring at me through the tennis fences seeing me clearly not making an effort to play tennis with him. i contemplated changing my go to running location to a different track to avoid this man.
today i went for a run on the track. my knee is still healing so i took it easy. i saw him there on the side of the track. with his tennis bag. he was on the phone talking chinese. i ran 2.5 miles. it was nerve wracking. i was scared he would say hi to me again. he was just standing there the whole time. on the phone. i avoided eye contact every time i got to that part of the track. the sun was in my favor. it made it more natural that i was looking down to keep the sun out of my eyes. he didn’t say anything to me today but i was so nervous that he would. i left the track without incident. he was still standing there when i left.

today was not the most productive day. i was zoning out a lot. but also it was cold in the morning. its been a while since i did work in bed in the am. I usually do work at my desk. work is going to be super busy this week. a bunch of people asked me for stuff, and then im also training a new analyst. thats pretty fun, i havent trained anyone in a while. its a good experience. you always have in your mind how long it takes to teach someone something, but you forget that theres questions and tangents and things take much longer. So I need to recalibrate. I made a whole training guide doc with quick links and resources of getting started on week 1 and then a schedule of things to go over. i really like making plans.
anyway for the bingo challenge. today i watched everyone’s show and everyone’s youtube video.
im on a call with cathy right now bc we were watching some of the shows together. she’s literally reading previous journals right now. and im also watching karen’s live stream. it’s hard for me to think of things to write when im talking to someone and listening to another person so i might end this article a tad shorter.
oh i had an intro meeting with someone from an adjacent team. she just started a month ago but she went to saratoga high. small world. she lives in sf now but she was mentioning how she used to go home every other weekend but since its AP test season her parents dont want her home as much so that her younger brother can focus on studying haha. when i mentioned i went to monta vista she was like “wow i respect you so much” lmao.

today i went to main street and sat in Meet Fresh and started putting together a plan for my new york trip. here’s the link of it. i need to plan it out so i get the ok from philip and alyssa on when i can crash at their places before i book tickets. it’s a little complicated because im going to go to new york first and then up to rhode island, and from there road trip to maine. and then obviously id have to come back to rhode island to drop off the car and stay at alyssa’s for a bit to catch an amtrak back to ny, and then stay there until my flight out of ny back to the west.
i think it might be cold in maine. and ill probably be missing the fall foliage, but thats fine. i wonder if the cool climbing rocks will be closed too. oh well. it should still be cool to visit. i also dont know what im going to do in vermont or new hampshire.
went biking before dinner, and i feel like i still have sleep debt from waking up for won’s sunrise hike the other day. am i getting old? i feel like it didnt affect me that much in the past.
oh yeah and we watched the first episode of season 1 survivor. interesting. im still not used to watching reality tv.
the loser of this bingo challenge(the reason why im writing this) has to edit a video with all the footage that we all are recording of us doing our challenge. and i really dont want to edit a video, i have so much other random stuff on my list of things to do. but val said she only did 3 things. and i’ve done 9-ish. so i might have a chance. but theres still like 2 weeks so we’ll see.
anyway. im pretty excited to plan out my east coast trip. the road trip to maine is going to be a solo trip so that’ll be cool. also the whole trip is going to be like one month. i need to calculate how much money the trip will cost. $2000 maybe? flights from SF to NY are actually not bad though, i guess there’s lots of flights back and forth. i think the stay in maine will be the biggest cost. ill just have to eat it up.
other than that, the only other trip i’m considering this year is visiting cathy in austin.
ive been tracking my spending and currently im on track to be within the 6000 budget. the trips are going to cost me, but it seems like on a normal month i spend about $250, and i should be spending less than 500 a month if i want to stay within the $6000. yeah i’ll probably go over. for 2023, i’ll change it to $7000. i don’t know. thats really surprising that i spent less than 6000 last year. the joshua tree road trip was less than $500. oh half dome was only $250... and sacramento was maybe $500. none of these trips involved planes though.
anyway. that was a tangent. tomorrow is monday. back to the grind. i feel like i should take some more friday’s off and do something. otherwise i’ll just be at home until the fall when i do these trips. i should really do another glamping trip. that one place in mendocino looks nice and well priced. im just so turned off at gas prices right now. do i just need to eat the gas cost. its going to cost about $65. thats not the worst i guess but sounds gross. if i could get someone to join me....

yesterday while getting dinner with shar and won, we planned out a a sunrise hike. so i got up at 5:30 today and we hiked up to hunters point. we sat on my mv senior all night party blanket there and did won’s guided meditation until a bunch more people  came up and it was too chattery to focus. then we went to the farmers market and had some rotisserie chicken.
came back home for dinner and then went back out to check out the used book sale. it wasn’t as good as pre-pandemic. and then i picked up shar and we went to an open house. it’s up in the hills past picchetti winery. it was pretty nice. 5 bedroom 4 bathroom a bar a view of the bay from the kitchen and a plot of land with a bunch of fruit trees. after we went to philz coffee. shar was doing work and i was just finishing my book “what is the what”.
it was a good book. it’s about the Lost Boys of Sudan. it’s insane the things they went through. its unreal that these things were happening in the 1990s. if you don’t know anything about the lost boys of sudan you can google it. but basically thousands of literal kids had nothing and walked across the country to escape war. lots of them died of disease or hunger or predators or war. one anecdote he mentioned basically seeing his friend die of hunger before his eyes. which was interesting to me because usually there’s like some thing that kills people. but dying of hunger is like i don’t know. i’m just imagining your cells one by one shutting down. or like your heart just pumps slower and slower until it stops and your body is just turned off. this books actually reminds me a lot of the alchemist because it’s so much traveling to what the main character doesn’t even know the destination. and there is this theme of discovery or growth in the journey although it didn’t present itself to me until the very end. the book is called “what is the what” and in the beginning he says its from some parable his dad would tell him about like adam and eve(i think?) and god saying like i have this garden of eden for you you can have all this, OR you can have the “what”. and so its like you can have all this good stuff that satiates you, or you can have the “what” which you don’t know what it is. it could be very good or very bad. but at least if you choose it you’ll get to know what it is vs if you choose the garden you’ll never know. and at the end when he finds out he’s one of the refugees excepted by america, he has a debate on whether he should go back to his hometown where he learned his family is actually still alive, or if he should go the “promised land” of america. and when he’s on the phone with his dad, his dad was like “america is the what!”. which i think is very interesting because the dad would probably think america is like the good place, but the main character talks thru his experience in america parallel to the journey he had back in sudan, and it is very clear that america is not the land of milk and honey. he makes minimum wage, he gets robbed, he cant get into college, the healthcare system is bad. which i guess you can argue is better than living in some war torn state  but i guess he had to sacrifice friends and family for this. he left behind his entire world, bad and good, for this new opportunity.
i have more notes about the book on my phone. but overall i would give the book an 8/10. I actually read another book about the lost boys in sophomore year lit class. it was called they poured fire on us from the sky. I would recommend this book, it was very eye opening.
