Notes I went a little off book from what this trope usually looks like and it really ended up being more like a different prompt on the big BTHB list (don't want to say what for spoilers), but it IS the idea I got thinking about this square and it is a lot about honesty so... hopefully that's fine haha.

Isn’t Draxum still banned from/wanted in the Hidden City? Him being stuck there doing the movie sounds like a cool explanation for him but I think canonically he still wouldn’t have been able to go back down there. Now the idea of him being the leader of the school’s lockdown protocols as the lunch lady considering no humans have seen anything like the invasion is hilarious 😂

Oh yeah I’ve been scratching my head thinking Leo should be paired with Hypno too, even though he doesn’t worship him like Mikey and Raph worship their heroes. But we’ve at least seen Leo getting excited at having a real magician around. AND. switching the gymnast lobster dude and hypno between Leo and Donnie wouldn’t have changed how things ended up playing out. I mean the Leo-lobster banter was hilarious but not pertinent to the episode.

I will say Donnie and Hypno’s relationship strain definitely had the potential to be played up more. While Donnie may not have anything personally against him more than any of their other villains, he does continually crap on magic in “Clothes Don’t Make the Turtle” and of course in general in the Witch Town episode, so having fighting between the science guy and magic guy could’ve also been fun. Missed opportunity number two :)

(Also the fact that they kept switching the voice actors for the sando brothers throws me off every time but anyway)

My biggest gripe with Battle Nexus NY is Casey being set up to be one of the villains in the arena, but ending up in the orb with everyone else on that cruise ship.

Like, it could’ve been Leo and Casey paired together and because they have their small moments throughout the show where they end up fighting each other specifically it would’ve worked well again. This Especially would’ve been fun not just because of their wild and clashing personalities, but because they’re both so diametrically opposed to each other strictly on principle.

Like, tell me the dynamic of leo trying to get the sprite to laugh while Casey’s just standing there cuffed to him all annoyed and watching him fail wouldn’t be hilarious. Eventually they’d probably get into the same tussle lobster twin and Leo did, and end up mutually clobbering each other once figuring out the sprite’s sense of humor is pain. I mean both these guys would eagerly jump at the chance to beat up their enemy to make someone laugh in order to be set free. Plus afterwards it would work perfectly since Casey would already be there to help them in like fight like in canon

Such a huge missed opportunity, I think this might just be my new canon of this episode 😭

Man “Battle Nexus: New York” was a great episode but I do have one major gripe with it.

Like. Raph being paired up with Ghostbear? Makes sense. Works great. Works amazing, even.

Mikey being paired up with Meatsweats? Yeah that checks out!!

Donnie getting…Hypno…? I mean. I guess Donnie doesn’t like magic so it kindaaa works but Kendra would have been a much better choice to me personally. Maybe Big Mama didn’t wanna include a human or something…

And Leo getting…uh…one of the Sando Brothers???? Of all villains? Nah let’s be real, his main villain is more Big Mama herself (or Leo could be considered his own worst enemy lmao-). Hell Hypno would have probably worked better here considering their shared love for magic tricks and stuff, but Carl Sando????

I very much think that it’s really just a Donnie thing that he likes to do and talk his brothers into and whatever clothes his bros end up wearing were completely provided by him 😂

Do you think the granny disguises Donnie and Leo wear (at Donnie’s insistence) are more of a Them thing or do Mikey and Raph also have their own granny disguises on hand?

If it’s the former then I have to say those two are killing it, I especially love Donnie’s scarf and old fashioned binoculars, and Leo’s eye makeup and pearls.

If it’s the latter though, then we were robbed Mikey and Raph granny designs. 😔

Something really nice about the turtles being able to somewhat be apart of human society that the Rise show gave us is the ‘The Clothes Don’t Make the Turtle’ episode. I’m not talking anything about Hypno’s plot or even the fun fashion montages with that bop of a song blasting in the background, but the flashback explanation of the guys going to the Magic Townhouse because it’s something Leo was so excited about.

Leo’s really the only one of his brothers super into magic and while the guys are usually enthusiastic about different fun human things to do, ultimately they mainly went because it’s something Leo wanted to see and he wanted his brothers to come with them. Of course it’s not like individually a fun magic show isn’t something each of the boys might enjoy anyway, they’ve all got their flare for theatrics. I just think it’s such a fun and fluffy detail to include in the show of the guys getting so dressed up in suits and masks for something that’s really Leo’s thing.

In the same way Leo felt the need to buy tickets for all four of them, they also really get into the festivities of something they otherwise wouldn’t have paid much attention to.

Thinking about how Leo says he uses his jokes to cope and y’know, thinking harder on it I think it may very well be because of what else uses one-liners and puns and that type of humor.

Specifically, 80’s action movies and campy sci-fi. Even more specifically, the protagonists of these.

So I can imagine why, exactly, Leo leans toward this brand of humor. It’s directly linked to things he loves! But even more than that is why I think it’s used as a coping mechanism.

In these genres, these quips tend to be said by the winner - or, if not a winner, then someone who will stay alive. So there’s a confidence behind them, an assurance, almost, that even if things go wrong, things aren’t ever too serious. There’s no bad endings here! It’s all good fun, even if the stakes seem high.

Leo canonically has been known to steer his brothers away from the more brutal villains and toward more fun, lighthearted activities and not-so-dangerous criminals. So for Leo, these jokes definitely make things less heavy, make the situations they find themselves in less intense.

It’s kinda not just coping, but also can be seen as a form of escapism. A safety blanket. A way for Leo to defuse the tension of knowing just how dangerous their lives are and replace that with a levity which implies that things will be okay.

Unfortunately, levity alone does not alter reality.
