📌 I’m keeping a pin on this because there’s something I want to add later that helps this hot take.
Hot take: Where Edith and Mary’s antagonism started
So I have written about how Mary uses disliking Edith as an emotional crutch to make her feel better about herself, (“however much I dislike myself, at least I’m not Edith), which is why in series 5 and 6 she continues to cross the line with Edith, despite their rivalry easing when Mary is happy and with Matthew, and how Edith blames and projects all her jealousy and frustration onto Mary, which is why after she matures and finds herself a bit more, she is able to be compassionate to Mary when Matthew goes missing and then dies, and when Henry is caught in the fire, despite still disliking her and exchanging snipes with her.
However, now I am speculating about where it began as children. With Edith, I think it would have been typical middle child snydrome. Middle daughter, not as pretty or confident, unhappy because her family likes her less, her unhappiness feeding into their contempt for her. A vicious circle. And Mary would have responded to that. But, and here is the real hot take, Mary’s attitude towards Edith also stems from the example set by their parents, especially (and I mean this) Cora.
Let’s look at how Robert and Cora speak about Edith.
“Poor old Edith, we never seem to speak about her.”
“I fear Edith will be the one taking care of us in our old age.”
“What a ghastly prospect.”
Then there is
“You mustn’t be unkind to poor Edith. She doesn’t have your advantages.”
And then when Edith points out that Cora never told Edith she was proud of her during her season.
“Oh, well, you were very helpful dear.”
And then all the way to Series 6.
“What are Edith’s prospects?”
And I say especially Cora because even in Series 6, Cora still speaks about Edith the same way she did in Series 1. Whereas Robert has had his eyes opened to Edith’s qualities and we see the two of them really form an excellent relationship, Cora still speaks in that same dismissive tone. And she speaks about her like that to Robert, and to Mary. Cora says straight to Mary’s face that Edith simply isn’t good as Mary, and is an object of pity.
And the worse thing is, this is never meant to be cruel. Unlike Mary’s attitude where it is targeted, with an intent to harm, and stems largely from Mary’s own insecurities and unhappiness, Cora’s attitude towards Edith is as natural as breathing. She loves Edith, she is happy for her when things go well, she consoles her when she is jilted and helps her reunite with Marigold. But she still takes it as a sad certainty that Edith just isn’t all that.
And I think Mary picked up on that, which is why it takes so long for Mary to respect Edith. Because from a very young age, Mary has internalised this attitude from her parents that Edith is a lesser being. Because Cora is nicer than Mary, Cora processes Edith’s inferiority as something to be pitied. Whereas unhappy, self-loathing and caustic Mary, interprets Edith’s supposed inferiority as something contemptuous, something that justifies turning Edith into her personal punching bag. This view has been taught to her and reinforced to her since she was a child, by the very people who should have loved and valued Edith the most. If even Cora and Robert; her own parents, pitied and looked down on Edith, and made little effort to disguise that, then it must be the right attitude!

I don't care if it's not your biggest ship, or if you ship them more with other people, or if you don't want it to be cannon but think it works AU - Who here ships Mary and Anna from Downton?
Even if you haven’t thought about it before, give it a little thought and if you agree, reblog. I just need to know I am not alone here!

My fellow Gabenath fans, I’ve had a revelation about the special…
🛑WARNING! MIRACULOUS PARIS SPOILERS UNDER CUT IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT YET! You have been warned🛑
So GoodguyGabe (As I have rechristened Betterfly as) says he stole the Butterfly and Peacock miraculous from the big evil cult leader dude so he could “Get something he’s always wanted” (A.k.a a child). This means that in his universe, he and Emilie never hired Nathalie to find them, THUS NEVER MEETING HER!
There is so much potential if GoodguyGabe comes back. I desperately want him to.
also; there’s a universe where Kitty noir and Scarabella are still fighting together and are also in love. Source: trust me bro
