I just want to talk about this scene where Spock gets “emotionally compromised.” Of all the people in the scene, none tried to stop him from beating Kirk (because of course they can’t.) Everybody was silent, except for two people who talked to him.

First is his father, Sarek, who stopped him by calling his name. He turns around and I love how the focus shifted and after the lens flare it’s revealed that both Uhura and his father have the same facial expression.

I love how they were looking at him with sympathy and understanding, and after seeing them he had this expression and looked away.

After this, he tells McCoy he’s “emotionally compromised” and walks out, ashamed at his outburst. Then we get the same focused shots on Sarek and Uhura.

The second person who spoke to him was Uhura of course but we didn’t hear what she said.

I think the scene is showing Spock lost everything and the two of them are the only ones he had left. Also they symbolize his two halves- human and Vulcan. Spock seems to think he’s disappointed them by his moment of weakness, leaving him again conflicted “just as he was as a child.”

That makes Sarek’s lines “I married your mother because I loved her” more meaningful. It’s okay to be human because it’s part of him.

Nothing seems clear anymore and it’s far easier to hurt than it is to heal.
