Scarabia Dorm - Birthday Party Venue

Jamil: It’s about time that the interviewing student comes. The interviewer chosen by the “Magical Birthday Dice” is said to bring good luck.... But don’t the students at this college bring nothing but trouble? Just who did they chose...

Sebek: Excuse me! Today’s presenter will be me, Sebek Zigvolt. Jamil, happy birthday!

Jamil: So you were the chosen one. I’ll be in your care today, Sebek.

It’s an immense advantage to be able to find water sources and food. Whilst he secures shelter, water, and food, I can devote myself to securing an escape plan.

Sebek: I expected no less of you. You firmly understand the foundations of survival. So you chose Jack as your handmaid for maximum efficiency. 

Jamil: No need to badmouth me. He’s simply the right person in the right place.

Sebek:… However, he won’t easily obey others. I refuse to acknowledge someone as my master if I don’t respect them from the bottom of my heart.

Jamil: Yes, I completely agree with you in that regard. But I think Jack will cooperate since we share our goal of escaping a deserted island. He’s a rare case in this school as he actually respects his seniors… He doesn’t cause trouble by acting haphazardly, nor does he lash out at his environment according to his mood. He doesn’t use deceitful words to trick others. There’s no need to waste your time playing games with him. I think nothing particular would happen, spending a few days with him.

Sebek: Well then, let’s move on to the next question. If you had to enter a different dorm, which one would you choose?

Sebek: Ignihyde?! I do not understand why you’d choose a dorm where they just fiddle around with machines! The only right answer to this question should have been Diasomnia!

Jamil: As you say, there are many students at Diasomnia who are proficient at magic, so it has caught my interest. Sebek: Wait! If you want to conjure lightning, you should definitely pick Diasomnia! Master Malleus can freely manipulate lightning at will. Furthermore, there are many anecdotes about lightning and the Witch of Thorns. Even though we are still students, as magicians, why should we purposefully build a machine to conjure lightning…

Jamil: Your suspicions are on point. I also want to know the answer. The Sorcerer of the Sands who is counted amongst the Great Seven. What exactly did he want to divine, to make such a large scale device… Now that we can no longer ask him, I should make my own device, right?

Q: Is there a present that left an impression on you, amongst all the ones you’ve been given?

Kalim: Not really, it’s difficult because there are so many, but… Probably the festive dancing movie I got from Cater and Lilia from our light music club. It’s them dancing and turning to the music and doing smiles and poses. The way they move in sync is almost like a habit, I can’t get enough of it no matter how many times I watch it~ That one definitely impressed me!

Q: Can you tell us about the activities you do in the light music club?

Kalim: Despite our name, we aren’t constantly singing or playing instruments. We basically eat a lot of sweets and chat about a lot of stuff. Lately, the topic has been… ah! When we told each other scary stories, something really exciting happened. We were telling ghost stories to get acquainted with each other. So when Lilia’s turn came up, right when he started talking about the curse of the “mysterious stone statue” that he heard about on a trip… BAM!! And we heard this huge noise behind us! When we panicked and turned around, the flower vase had fallen from the shelf and broken on the floor… I cried out: “Was it the curse?!”, and when I hurriedly looked at them, they were both facing the floor with trembling shoulders. Like, what should we do! And I froze up… And then the shelf “meowed”. Turns out Lucius somehow got into the clubroom and pushed over the vase. Those two already noticed and were making fun of me. I told them they were terrible, but ended up laughing. In the end, the three of us ended up bursting out in laughter.

Chapter 2

Q: Can you tell us about your family?

Kalim: Okay, so first, my dad! We hail from a merchant lineage that has been around for many generations, selling silks, food and… a lot of things, basically. My dad is the most amazing man ever, he should be very busy, but he’s always smiling-. My mom is a kind person! She’s always praising me and almost never gets mad. I also have tons of siblings. They’re adorable, every single one of them. It’s lively and pleasant when all of them are together. We often play hide and seek in our house. However… It takes a long time when I’m the searcher because I have so many siblings to look for… I once started at noon and was still searching at dinner. I got hungry, so I eventually gave up. Kalim: That one is a replica of the flying magical carpet. I don’t know when we got it, but it seems to be pretty old. I first met it when… I sneaked into the storage room of our home. Suddenly, something was poking my shoulders. When I turned aside, the magic carpet peeped up from the shadow of the piles of gold. It seemed like it wanted to go outside, so I tried my best to persuade my father. I promised him I would always treasure it, so he entrusted the carpet to me. It was so happy when it was freed that it took me on a sky-high ride. And since then, it’s been my most precious friend!

Q: Can you tell us what you think about your classmates?

Kalim: I talk a lot with… Silver, probably. Talking about him, we had this assignment for art where we had to draw our classmates. I had Silver be my model, but he didn’t move at all? I was so impressed by his concentration, but then I heard him snoozing… He was sleeping all along! Hahaha! After that, Silver drew me. His pencil went WOOSH! Or something like that… His forceful drawing was so interesting!

Q: Can you tell us what you think about your vice dorm leader?

Kalim: In the past, a tutor taught me and Jamil went to school. But when I cried because I didn't understand an assignment, he always taught me how to solve it. He’s a really reliable guy, even though we’re childhood friends that have always been together.

Q: Are there any other ways he left an impression on you?

Kalim: Then… What about when I first started using magic? Jamil could use magic before I did. He looked so cool when he was training and being helped by adults, so I imitated him every day. And one day, I made a parrot’s feather float a little!… At first I thought it was a mere breeze. The only one in my family that can use magic is my mom, so everyone was delighted-. CHAPTER 1

Yuu: Happy Birthday! Would you like to share some thoughts?

Deuce: Thank you! I’m happy so many people congratulated me. But… It’s making me feel kind of anxious. I’ve gotten used to Unbirthday parties instead… It’s quite different when you’re the one in the spotlight. But everyone put in a lot of effort to prepare all this, so I intend to enjoy all of it! They even prepared many of my favorite egg dishes, I can’t wait to dig in.

Q: You really love eggs.

Deuce: Yeah. I love eating and making them. I thought making a fried egg was as simple as frying an egg, but reality differs. It’s quite difficult to make the perfect half-cooked egg… I used to practice that a lot. Ah, on that subject… Just earlier, me and Clover were debating egg dishes! He taught me about things like what ingredients go well with omurice and how to make a simple pudding… That’s the first time I’ve ever been able to talk about egg dishes with someone, it was great. Ace said he really didn’t understand cooking all that much and looked bored. He taught me the valued recipe for torofuwa pudding, so I’m thinking of making that next time. CHAPTER 2

Q: What do you like?

Deuce: Riding a magical wheel. And fiddling with machines. My mom is hopeless with machines, so I used to set up our household appliances. Because my mom never read the manual, I had to take over unwillingly, but I became interested in it. 

Deuce: But word got around that I “loved” fixing and repairing machines, and people thought of me as being good at it. So once in a while I got bothered by people coming to me with their broken appliances. As if it wasn’t a big deal at all…

Deuce: A while back, I wanted to listen to an old radio cassette player in the dorm lounge, but it didn’t budge. They say you should smack old appliances to fix them right? So I slapped it as a joke but it really worked. And Diamond, who saw that was all “Deuce, your hands work miracles” and started spreading it around, half-jokingly. And that spread and it seems word got around. Before I knew it, even my friends told me “Wow, it’s so cool that you can fix machines!”. Oh well…

Q: What do you want to be in the future?

Deuce: A police officer. And between them, I’d like to be part of the elite group of the Defensive Magic Arts experts. Of course I know it won’t be a simple job, but I don’t plan on giving up. And that’s why I’m doing whatever I can now for my future. I practice my magic, flying and obviously review my lessons every day. 

Deuce, small voice: I don’t get good grades on my theoretical tests though… I guess I’ll have to do my best from now on.

Deuce: Also, I’m putting most of my power into image training! I learn how to do investigations and how to beat culprits by watching police dramas and movies. I’ve already memorized how to look cool when chasing a subject and a catchphrase when I catch them. Whaddya think? I’m practically ready to stand on the crime scene, right?

CHAPTER 3

Q: What games do you usually play?

Deuce: I’ve been playing cards with my friends at the dorm lately. I used to be obsessed with magical wheel, so I never played games with anyone, it’s really fun. I also play mobile games. Like the ones where you build villages and defeat monsters. By the way, there’s a really popular puzzle game going around in our dorm. You have to match colors so the pieces disappear, it’s easy to understand and really fun. But plenty of students stay up late at night to continue playing… There are many who got beheaded by dorm leader Rosehearts for disregarding bed time. 

Deuce: ... Actually, I was also one of them. I had a match with Ace and got so heated that we stayed up all night… I tried to take this serious, but… I regret it. Since then, I only play one hour a day.

Q: What do you do on your days off?

Deuce: I do a lot of physical training. And sometimes I train with Jack from the same track and fields club, if he’s on the sports grounds. Even if we’re doing something different, it somehow always turns into a match… I want to do some light training but in the end it turns into a real contest… I notice that there are days where we run ten laps. At the end, we’re exhausted and our bodies run dry. You end up thinking “What did I do with all that free time?”, right? 

Deuce: Ah, lately Epel has joined us as well. That guy’s sturdier than he looks. In the past I loved riding (magical wheel) with my friends, but also running. Kalim: Chef! Please take care of me!

Trey: Well, aren’t you excited?

Ghost chef: He certainly is. Were you perhaps looking forward to the Master Chef program?

Kalim: Yeah! I’ve always been told that “I’m not allowed to use kitchen knives or stoves because they’re dangerous”. That’s why I pretty much never cooked before. But they gave me the okay because a professional is instructing me today! So I’m super excited to try some real cooking!

Ghost chef: S-So, they forbid you to touch knives and stoves? You must’ve grown up in quite an overprotective household. Nevertheless, I am elated that you were looking forward to this program so much! I am eager to teach you. Let me list the meals we’re going to make today.

Kalim: We’re going to make biryani, right?

Ghost chef: Yes. Biryani is a seasoned rice with meat and all kinds of ingredients and spices. We steam curry and rice together, alternated on top of each other in layers. Originally it was a dish of the royal court, and is served a lot at festivals~
