The true name of it is "Cosaque à Cheval" and the nationality of the rider was Lithuanian but not Polish. "The Polish rider" name was given in the late 19th century by the Polish romantics. The Lithuanian rider is the Lithuanian count Marcjan Aleksander Ogiński (Marcijonas Aleksandras Oginskis, 1632 - 1690), who was married on Marcibelą Hlebavič (Марцыбэла Глебавіч). This painting most of its time (at least 162 years), also spent in Lithuania.
