Repost @sundiataacolifc : Sundiata Acoli turns 84 years old Jan. 14th. He has been in prison 47 years. The time is now to release him. For more info: http://www.sundiataacoli.org/sundiatas-birthday-is-jan... Donate here (select Sundiata Acoli Campaign):https://naabpp.org/donate/ #BringSundiataHome Sundiata’s birthday is Jan. 14th – wish him well & #BringSundiataHome Sundiata Acoli turns 84 years old Jan. 14th, 2021. He has been incarcerated for 47 years. Please help us spread the word, and by demanding his release. Please take a moment to send Sundiata a letter saying happy birthday (most federal prisons won’t allow in postcards or cards anymore), to remind him he is loved and not forgotten. Sundiata Acoli #39794-066 (Squire) FCI Cumberland P.O. BOX 1000 Cumberland, MD 21501 Sundiata is both a former Black Panther Party member as well as former mathematician and computer analyst, who at every stage in his life has worked to help people. Sundiata, like so many others, is a victim of the FBI’s COINTELPRO efforts. Black people make up 38.6% of all the people incarcerated in Federal prisons, yet they are just 13.4% of the total US population (FBOP statistics). Sundiata Acoli is a part of that 38.6%. Because #BlackLivesMatter, we demand the release of Sundiata Acoli. Sundiata Acoli’s continued incarceration for 47 years is a drain on resources and he deserves to be free. The time is now to release aging and ill incarcerated people. Sundiata has already suffered from COVID-19 and needs our immediate support. To join our work for his compassionate release and for more information, contact us at [email protected]. https://www.instagram.com/p/CKAap7iB4JP/?igshid=1gdnbn2bzvuou

"The Truth About Alonzo" is a piece I wrote that explores the 1902 lynching of Alonzo Tucker in Coos Bay, Oregon, the ways that brutal white supremacy persists today, and the efforts to address racial injustice through memorializing him. I didn't know it was the cover story for Portland Magazine until I received my copy in the mail. Photos by Margaret Jacobsen. You can read the piece online here: https://www.up.edu/news/2020/10/the-truth-about-alonzo.html?fbclid=IwAR19Eou1fHH4xlb4s6E_-9UQPP4gv7RzaX-Mo9Kykqbr4szsM8_mMNa-Dkw https://www.instagram.com/p/CG7-fHWBdMq/?igshid=8bo9mllx46rw

In 1902, Alonzo Tucker, a Black man, was lynched in Coos Bay in broad daylight before a crowd of hundreds. I wrote this piece for Portland Magazine about his life, and the efforts by Taylor Stewart and the Oregon Remembrance Project to address the living legacy of Oregon's history of racialized injustice through memorializing Alonzo Tucker. I explore visionary fiction, Black quantum organizing, abolition, and strategic unrealistic dreaming in my new piece for Medium's One Zero. "The more scared we are, the more in crisis, the more we are told to pull back. But this is the time when anything and everything can change. Let our imaginations grow as large as galaxies." Oh and did I mention it's published in conjunction with a reprint of Octavia E. Butler's short story "Bloodchild" which you can also read on the site??? Looking forward to my IG Live tomorrow with Josh Rushing. 9/17 12 pm PST/3 pm EST #repost @joshrushing: Be sure to catch Thursday's IG Live with Walidah Imarisha, who I met in Portland a few years ago while on assignment for @AJFaultLines.   Walidah is a writer, historian, public scholar, poet, activist and professor committed to not only imagining but creating a better world without poverty, prisons and inequality. "What would it look like," Imarisha asks, "to use the tens of billions of dollars spent on the prison system differently: for living wage jobs, for public education, for health care, for quality affordable housing, and more?" We'll talk about this vision and why she believes even nonfiction books must be read partially as fiction… as well as race, gender, Star Wars, the creative process and what she's learned about life along the way. Check out Walidah’s projects here: https://www.walidah.com/projects-1. @walidahimarisha @joshrushing @ajfaultlines @aljazeeraenglish  #SpeakAboutWomen #WalidahImarisha #OctaviasBrood #AngelsWithDirtyFaces #VisionaryFiction #afrofuturism #walidahimarisha #speculativefiction #blackspeculativefiction #BlackLivesMatter #activist #socialactivist #socialactivism #socialactivismthroughart #socialactivismwriters #writersofinstagram #writerscommunity #writers #authorsofinstagram #authoractivists  #byoq #bringyourownquestions #iglive #igtv #joshrushing// https://www.instagram.com/p/CFNnZ_6hNqz/?igshid=1m909aq2ru0cs

#repost @joshrushing: I’m thrilled to announce this week’s IG Live with Walidah Imarisha, who I met in Portland a few years ago while filming The Rise of Hate in Trump’s America for Fault Lines, https://bit.ly/32c0yKo.  Walidah is a writer, historian, public scholar, poet, activist and professor committed to not only imagining but creating a better world without poverty, prisons and inequality. Memories of Abolition Day is available! This Black sci fi anthology that imagines abolitionist worlds is incredible and I'm honored to be part of it! You can download your copy for free here: https://www.thebigwe.com/abolitionday Black Freedom Beyond Borders: Memories of Abolition Day An anthology that invites you into future of safety & freedom; a future without prisons & policing. Black Freedom Beyond Borders: Memories of Abolition Day is a collection of freedom dreams written by a band of Black Radical storytellers. While debates about “defunding” raise the question of what a new public safety system might look like, these authors & artists are showing us what is possible through speculative fiction. Cities across the country are responding to the call from residents to right-size bloated police budgets in order to resource disinvested communities. While debates about “defunding” raise the question of what a new public safety system might look like, authors and artists are showing us what is possible through speculative fiction, creatively challenging the status quo by telling stories of a more equitable future. The Black storytellers in the “World-building for Abolitionist Futures” writers room follow in this revolutionary tradition. https://www.instagram.com/p/CEcd1QYhKzx/?igshid=p4oo3b4jb3tq

Today is the day! Come to the launch of the new Black abolitionist sci fi anthology, Memories of Abolition Day! 8/24 5 pm PST Wakanda Dream Lab and PolicyLink brought together a group of Black creators who imagined a post abolitionist world together, and then we all created individual stories in it! https://policylink.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_UiJZ8bK6RBWO7BAmstE_TA Join Wakanda Dream Lab and PolicyLink in a storyworld of safety and freedom in a future without prisons and policing. While debates about “defunding” raise the question of what a new public safety system might look like, authors and artists are showing us what is possible through speculative fiction. In the spirit of visionary fiction, we convened future-bending Black storytellers for a Black Speculative Writer's Room Project, and together, we created an anthology of freedom dream stories exploring a world after the abolition of policing and prisons. We invite you to a reading and exploration with contributors in the forthcoming anthology, Black Freedom Beyond Borders: Memories of Abolition Day, speculative fiction of freedom dreams from Black Radical storytellers including: - Amber Butts (Black Youth Project) - Ayize Jama-Everett (The Liminal Trilogy) - Calvin Williams (Wakanda Dream Lab) - Donté Clark (The North Pole) - Naudika Williams (We Inherit, We Shape, We Heal) - Shawn Taylor (Nerds of Color) - Walidah Imarisha (Octavia's Brood) - Amir Khadar (Black Freedom Beyond Borders, anthology artist) In this session we will hear from the contributors and curators reading excerpts of their pieces, and exploring visuals with augmented reality artwork to bring this liberated storyline to life. We look forward to sharing this creative and visionary space with you. Time Aug 24, 2020 05:00 PM in Pacific Time (US and Canada) https://www.instagram.com/p/CERwnmjB1NC/?igshid=yn78tljbymqo
