As a survivor of the Bosnian Genocide, I am acutely attuned to the haunting echoes of that dark chapter in human history, a chapter that refuses to be closed. Today, as I witness the unfolding tragedy in Gaza, the spectre of genocide resurfaces with a poignant familiarity.

The Palestinian landscape, scarred by 75 years of Israeli military occupation, mirrors the hardships faced during the Bosnian War and Genocide - displacement, economic hardship, and restricted access to basic resources.

The ongoing bombing campaign in Gaza exacerbates an already dire humanitarian situation. This is more than a geopolitical conflict; this is a contemporary genocide.

In 111 days, more than 25,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed by Israel, including at least 10,000 children. More than 8,000 are missing, trapped under the rubble, and presumed dead. Another 63,000 are injured, and more than 90% of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents have been displaced.

Videos of Israeli leaders calling for the destruction of Gaza and the forcible displacement of Palestinians echo the sentiments expressed by those responsible for the Bosnian Genocide.

In the case of the Bosnian Genocide, while both the Bosnian Serbs and the Serbian political leadership knew they were committing genocide in their expansionist plans to create a “Greater Serbia,” publicly they attempted to conceal their crimes to avoid accountability.

Their genocidal intent was not as open or as loud as some of the sentiments expressed by Israeli political leadership.

Nevertheless, comparing the Bosnian Genocide with the current situation in Gaza necessitates a nuanced examination. While historical contexts differ, the core elements of mass displacement, targeted violence against civilians, and the overarching goal of extermination of a specific group are the same.

To comprehend the concept of genocide, it is crucial to understand its legal definition and sociological framework. Coined by Raphael Lemkin after the Holocaust, genocide encapsulates acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group.

Genocide goes beyond the mere act of killing; it encompasses a deliberate and systematic attempt to annihilate a specific group based on its identity.

Genocide is a process. In Bosnia, it did not simply occur one day in July of 1995, nor did it suddenly rear its head in October of 2023 in Gaza. It is a process that starts with dehumanisation, discrimination, and persecution.

the amount of ways we have to qualify the geoncide in gaza in order to get people to care is actually sickening to me. “it’s a feminist issue!” “it’s a disabilities issue!” “it’s an environmental issue!” like i’m sorry but even if this was happening solely to able bodied men and was causing no harm to the environment, it would still be wrong because it’s a genocide and these people are being bombed and killed and starved every fucking day. you shouldn’t need an extra label to give you a reason to care about people that are dying.

Yeah! So Heal Palestine is a legit org founded by the founder of the PCRF, and lately they've been dedicated specifically to helping individual Palestinians medically with extremely dire cases of injury such as 3rd degree burns covering the entire body, such as this one. Another thing they do is distribute aid, and run 'fun days' for kids in refugee camps.

as a tlou author on here, i am indeed stepping back from writing for a while. with what is going on in gaza, posting fic content is the least of my priorities right now, and i urge others to do the same. now, when you do go back to it, whether that be in a week, a few weeks, a month, however long you've decided from now 'till then, i think every blurb/drabble/oneshot WHATEVER should come attached with educational links, donation links, masterlists of information- and for tlou ESPECIALLY; why not to buy tlou2 remastered/neil being a zionist. tlou fics can indirectly fund neil, as it brings it viewers wanting to play the game possibly, so it is crucial to put forth the truth of it as our works are creative interpretations, and we absolutely do not stand with neil's views. i have seen fics posted around this time where links regarding palestine have been attached before the actual writing, so this is nothing new, but i do not see it often. this is a way i want to spread awareness that hopefully reaches more eyes. stating your view on things and emphasizing it among the community constantly is so important. i have already lost some followers because of this writing hiatus, which is utterly stupid, and completely disgusting. a hiatus isn't forever, and pixel pussy should be the least of your worries right now. if it aches you that much, go read older shit, but goddess forbid; do not go harassing authors about it. we are not machines that just pump shit out. we are humans. we are allowed to harbor an anger thick and thorny enough to sparse ourselves from production.

Even in the midst of the new year’s excitement, I genuinely can’t stop being haunted by thoughts of Palestine. We have the privilege of celebrating the new year, making resolutions, looking forward to the blessings in the year ahead—but many Palestinian children didn’t get that privilege. Hundreds upon hundreds of children far younger than me have died in the past 3 months; won’t get the luxury of sharing in this flurry of excitement and joy. Many more are biding their time, not knowing when their last day is. Tonight will mark a new beginning, but I hope it also heralds a year of far more people advocating for Palestine, sharing the atrocities that have been committed in Palestine, boycotting brands supporting Palestinian genocide, and just all around finally coming to terms with the fact that Palestinian genocide SHOULD be their concern—even if they’re not being directly affected by it. More people need to be aware that educating themselves on this should not be a choice, but a responsibility and a must.
