Themed Rec List | Tomarrymort Recs by Horcrux ⚡👑🏆🔒💍

I wanted to put together a rec list of Harry/Tom fics with a core focus on horcruxes outside of Diary Tom (the most popular horcrux) and Voldemort himself. Please enjoy these 22 fics that feature one of Tom's horcruxes and their special relationship with Harry.

There’s a ton of interesting variation that can be explored within a Harry and horcrux Tom ship — from where the horcruxes are located and when Harry can conceivably meet them in canon (for example, the Cup horcrux is harder to access than the others); to what age they were made by Voldemort and how that would shape their personalities and interactions with Harry; to the different magical properties that they might embody, depending on the vessel that was chosen.

Finally, it looks like Scarcrux and Locket are the most popular choices (after Diary Tom), and we absolutely need more Cup horcrux fics!

23 Tomarrymort Recs for 2023 (Longfic Edition)

Happy New Year! 🤍 Here is a round-up of some of the most engaging multi-chaptered works/longfics that I came across in this ship in 2023.

I found each of these fics, in their depiction of the ship, to be a fresh or surprising take on our familiar beloved characters of Harry and Tom|Voldemort, truly groundbreaking in some way in their approach to the ship. It's amazing to me that even after 20+ years of this ship existing, there's still new themes / tropes / dynamics to explore, and the authors are all so talented in making me think about the ship in some new way — just incredible examples of what it means to be a transformative work of fanfiction.

Criteria for this list: multi-chaptered, Tomarrymort-centric, with at least 1 update published in 2023. As with a previous longfic rec list, I tried to find longer fics that were relatively under-rated (which is hard to define, but below 2K kudos for the most part).

A Darkness by Any Other Name by river_marrow (M, 30k, WIP)

Decades after the war ends, Harry is thrown through the Veil, and finds himself in an alternate reality where the leader of the Muggleborn uprising is the Dark Lord Voldemort.

A Dead God's Faith by @selfishrot (M, 35k, WIP)

Blood and spittle rush to follow Riddle’s words that are dragged out through a wrecked throat. “I will consume you.” Harry felt a thrill run up his spine, along with the usual fear and anger that accompanied Voldemort's threats. “Be gentle, I can feel your soul ripping its stitches.”

When Harry looks at Tom, he feels overwhelmed. There is a spark that makes him hopeful, the fear that nothing he does will save Tom from himself, and the horror at what his lies might lead to. When Tom looks at Harry, he feels nothing. Until he does, and then Harry’s world starts drowning in blood.

Sent on a Ministry mission to fight for magic's survival, Harry goes back in time with two simple objectives: find and destroy any existing Horcruxes, and stop Tom Riddle ever evolving into Voldemort — using any means necessary. HP Rec Fest, Day 30 ❄️

Happy new year!! This is the last post for the @hprecfest daily prompts for which I'll be reccing fic, so the complete list of Tomarrymort daily recs for this month is listed in its entirety below! The 31st prompt is "a fav amongst favs", which I am physically incapable of narrowing down to a handful of fics, so I'll just end on Day 30 🤍

Thank you to the fest mods for suggesting such lovely prompts and running such a well-organized fest — what a great idea to celebrate the fantastic writing found in this fandom, and I found myself with tons of great new fics to read, particularly in other ships and rarepairs that I would have never come across otherwise!

Day 30: A Pre-Canon Fic

Reconciling with Death by Madame_Psychosis (M, 26k, complete)

Summary: Featuring a dead girl in a forest, little-soldier-boys, some tenuous grasps on reality, straw mothers, a ghost in a bathroom and, slowly and sadly, kindness from a boy who’s just passing through time. Why I rec it for this prompt: A really unique take on Harry travelling back in time to 1941 to Tom's school days. I love the non-linear style that this fic is written in, which really enhances the build-up of the murder mystery and all the psychological suspense.

Animus, Anima by @maiathoustra (M, 145k, complete)

Summary: In limbo, Harry doesn't choose to go back to the Forbidden Forest to face Voldemort. He makes another decision and finds himself in a baby's body: little Tom Riddle. Years pass that intimately bind the orphan and his imaginary friend into a hopeless and incestuous relationship. Indeed, all the odd events of Tom Riddle's life happen in spite of Harry's presence: could he be the one who provokes them? Why I rec it for this prompt: Another unique take on Harry being sent back in time, this time as a disembodied voice in Tom's head as the most important part of his journey from childhood to when he becomes Lord Voldemort. An incredible exploration on what it means for two souls to love each other so intensely, and the ending is absolutely gutting in a beautiful way. Definitely have tissues on hand for this long, beautiful, angsty read!

Day 29: A Post-Canon Fic

The Other Path by @vdoshu (T, 23k, complete)

Summary: They won the war. Voldemort was gone. The remaining Death Eaters had been captured. They finally had peace. No one ever said peace was so dull. Why I rec it for this prompt: A post-war fic about Harry who finds himself needing a challenge — some kind of reason to feel alive after the war ends — and how he ends up seeking that out in another dimension where Voldemort is still around. A very fun read that shows how very much Harry and Voldemort need the other, even when everything else in their worlds is seemingly going their way.

Summary: Sometimes pretending to love is an act of love in itself. Tom knows this. Why I rec it for this prompt: A fic that explores what happens in an established relationship once the spark starts to fade. Very angsty and heartbreaking, and at under 1000 views, definitely underrated for the quality of writing and emotional depth captured here!

Day 27: A Muggle AU Fic

Summary: Tom knows from the beginning that he is destined for greatness. Nothing and no one will stop him from achieving his goals. (And then, of course, there are the dreams.) Why I rec it for this prompt: I love the AU setting here where it's a non-magical universe, but there's still just a sprinkle of magic, as Tom retains vague memories from his previous life as Lord Voldemort and is haunted throughout his life by dreams of a boy with bright green eyes, and finally figures out what it means. A really fascinating look into how Tom might have turned out if he were raised in an entirely muggle setting and went on to become an organized crime / mob boss.

2023 fic recs, an incomplete list

I thought vaguely about doing some of the great fic rec themes going round this month and then did none of them, so instead here is a list of some of the great Tomarrymort I read this year. It is necessarily an incomplete list because I read so many good things.

How the fuck is this so good?? It’s just so good!! It’s like someone walked up to me and said ‘here is the perfect fucked-up time travel Tomarry of your dreams’ and it is all that and more. Tom trying to kill Harry? Tom imparting his hunger to Harry to get him to eat?? SO GOOD.

I know this has a ‘this is going to end badly’ tag BUT I AM INVESTED ANYWAY. The dynamics are IMPECCABLE. The slow entwining. The possessiveness building. Tom has been on a murder spree. He’s told Harry “You’re supposed to be with me.” I AM TOO INVESTED.

Creepy bedsharing. Creepy bedsharing!! Tom is SO wonderfully, awfully, obsessively creepy. And fond of biting. And Harry is like ‘I have read Hamlet, I will be on guard for him wanting to kill me’ so close and yet so far Harry!

A Light That Never Goes Out by kippies

PERFECT MAFIA AU, I am reliving ‘super in disguise’ Harry going up to Voldemort to badly seduce him in the club on loop. And it’s got Voldemort like ‘This boy means nothing to me and to prove it I am going to think about him in loving detail for the next six paragraphs’. Truly what more do I need in life than this.

Would You Still Love Me? by chiocchi

All of these recs could just be me going HOW IS THIS SO GOOD. Anyway, how is this so good?? Every single one of Harry’s expressions is perfect. “I would still love you if you were one smooth gelatinous blob” rotates in my mind at regular intervals.

Accidents happen by Baryshnikov (T, 47k, WIP)

Summary: Harry must have been London's first accidental sugar daddy. Why I rec it for this prompt: The dynamic between hapless sugar daddy Harry and unintentional sugar baby Tom in this fic is top-tier and so unbelievably hot that I had to check a few times to see that this fic actually was rated 'T'. Harry settles quite naturally into being Tom's financial sponsor for pretty much everything in his life, like it was meant to be, and I absolutely adore Tom getting utterly spoiled to within an inch of his life.

Summary: It is a universal truth that only fourth-years and older are allowed to go to the Yule Ball. Tom intends to break this rule, and he intends to do so by having the famous Head Auror Harry Potter escort him there on his arm. Why I rec it for this prompt: Manipulative second year Tom is a delight in this fic, convincing Harry Potter to go with him as his 'celebrity date' to the Yule Ball. It's always so very satisfyingly when Tom gets everything he wants and deserves, and the ending epilogue is so sweet as well!

Day 23: A Soulmate Fic

Summary: Thomas Gaunt reaches through the dimensions and plucks an eleven-year-old Harry Potter from his world and brings him home again. Why I rec it for this prompt: An absolutely charming story about Voldemort finding his soulmate across time and dimensions, and bringing Harry to a place where he'll be treated much better. We also very rarely see a Gryffindor version of Voldemort, so I was very excited to see that as one of the tags. Voldemort as a religious leader/figurehead-type in their society was also a really interesting take!

Day 22: An Unfinished Fic

In Death, Standby by Sophisme (M, 94k, WIP)

Summary: For the better part of his bizarre early childhood Harry believed himself to be a snake. A rather dreadfully deformed snake, true, but a snake nonetheless. Why I rec it for this prompt: I think I will never get over this fic not being completed. This was such an intriguing take on Voldemort taking in Harry and how Harry would turn out as a result. There are so many interesting ideas explored here, like how Harry thinks he's a snake when he's little because the only 2 individuals he ever interacts with are Voldemort and Nagini. Regardless of it being nearly 10 years since this fic has updated, it is entirely worth the read, purely for the superb characterization and charming writing.

Summary: Someone abducts Harry Potter and the Dark Lord in an effort to get them to cooperate and end the war. It goes horribly wrong. Why I rec it for this prompt: This fic was so deeply moving and offered such an intriguing and emotionally rich glimpse of Voldemort's psychology and emotions and background in just 3k words. Incredibly powerful writing from beginning to end — this is definitely a fic I come back to and think about a lot.

Summary: Harry and Voldemort find themselves locked up in a mysterious prison in an A/B/O alternate universe setting. Why I rec it for this prompt: This is such a hard prompt to narrow down, because I feel like I could link like a hundred fics in this ship with really, really hot smut scenes. But! The smut in this fic is INSANE, and prolific, and detailed, and varied, and it's just perfection, and I literally couldn't focus on work or anything else for the rest of the day after reading certain chapter updates because all I could think about was how hot the writing in this fic was ‎️‍🔥

Tomarrymort Dead Dove Recs, Part 2 🕊️

Thank you all for the wonderful reception to Part 1 of Tomarrymort Dead Dove recs! I was honestly blown away by the interest in this first list featuring Non-Con/Dub-Con recs. It was so incredibly heartening to see that the open-mindedness towards the taboo, the degenerate, the ‘problematic’ is not only alive and well, but thriving, in this ship, when it seems like it’s been reviled and sanitized out of other ships and communities and spaces within this fandom and elsewhere. But Tomarrymort readers seem to be a special breed 🤝 and I’m just so glad we can all be horny sickos together 🤍

For Part 2 of the Dead Dove rec list, the first half is comprised of incest fics, and the second half is chan (underage) fics. These aren’t all necessarily dark fic in terms of tone or plot (some fics are actually quite cozy); the dead dove label just serves as an indicator to take the tags seriously.
