I strongly believe the most dangerous RPers are the ones who both feel very entitled to the things they want and who use RP as an escape or to satisfy a strong need they have that they cannot fulfill IRL.

I think we all have had really low points in our lives where the RP/game was our only happy place and it is understandable to seek shelter there. There can also be a lot of healthy catharsis that comes with RP that I think is good for people to experience and explore.

But RP should primarily be about having fun exploring cool narratives with other human beings and it all veers into more dangerous territory when the roleplay stops becoming just our silly, relaxing, pretendy fun times hobby and instead morphs into our one escape or one thing that can satisfy the powerful IRL need we have. It’s weight and importance dramatically shifts. It stops being just a game. It becomes something else.

Add in a sense of entitlement and you have a person ripe for smashing through other people’s boundaries in order to get the RP they want.

Someone might want romance, sex, attention, or the illusion of power and can’t get those things IRL. But once they find they can have some variant of it througu RP instead and feel entitled to it, it becomes all too easy at that point to decide it is okay to hurt, manipulate, or control people in order to get what you ‘deserve’.

So if you find yourself RPing with someone who fills the missing gaps in their life with RP - be wary and careful. Remember you should ALWAYS feel empowered to assert your boundaries.

If you yourself realise you are using RP to fill gaps you are missing IRL - don’t. It doesn’t automatically make you a monster, but the risk that you might harm someone is greater. It is unhealthy and though the work will be very hard, investing in your IRL to the point where you don’t need RP to plug the gaping hole in your life is incredibly rewarding and better than any flimsy simulation of things RP could conjure up for you.
