          emily had to laugh at his words, mostly to hide the fact that the compliment had somewhat worked. “ yeah, i’m SUPER special. ” she shook her head, taking another sip of the drink. “ why do you wanna know ?  is it part of the job description, like,  if you don’t get at least five people to share their tragic backstories with you a night, do you get fired ?  ”

          “  yeah, i care about you too. ” a weak smile, “ mine were, i guess. at least until he.... tried to kill me.  ” she shrugged. it was something she was still trying to get her head around. no matter how badly a relationship ends, generally no one points guns at the other.  “ yeah. no point in holding on to the past, right ?  ”

         jyn’s mouth opened, and then she slammed it shut quite abruptly. some of the girl’s words were unfamiliar to her, but the TONE said just enough. she’d underestimated the fire of the girl at the bar — hypocrisy, really, considering how many times in her life she’d been looked down on because of her physicality. being small means nothing. and right now, starting a fight in the midst of a populated area would be a bad idea. instead, she squashed down her temper, constrained it to a glare instead. “ elementary school ? ” she questioned instead. school, she understood. but elementary ?

          emily was surprised by the lack of response. her comments —  her entire attitude was designed to get a response. insult someone and they’ll insult you right back, that was the RULE. that’s the easiest way to avoid attachment. or, less dramatically, to avoid being annoyed. she raised an eyebrow. “ was i... not clear enough ? yes, elementary school. you know, that thing you go to l e a r n when you’re a kid ? JESUS. ”

Lucas poured a soft drink for the person sitting at the bar. “It’s on the house,” He slid it over to them. “If you tell me what’s on your mind. I can practically feel your stress and your anxiety.”

          emily eyed the drink with distrust, brows furrowed, lips pursed. her eyes raised to the man, as her arms crossed over her chest. “ and be treated like a fucking NUT JOB again ?  thanks, no thanks. ” she took the glass anyway, and brought it up to her lips.

Jessica need to prove to Emily she was really alive, but how does she do that, “who ever told you that lied to you, we can always fix things right know and that fight was pretty dumb, do i have to kiss you or something to show you this is real.” She thinks this is the only way.

          “ nothing makes sense. but i’ve been so lost without you. even before the mountain, when you got with mike, i — i was HURT. ” slowly, fear and confusion settled. she still couldn’t believe it, months of grieving didn’t go away easily. but she would accept it. for as long as she could, she would have jess back. emily laughed. “ what ? how would that help ? ”
