There was still a smile on her face from playing with the kids, but it soon disappeared once she came face to face with the one she bumped into. She kind of looked like she had stepped into something nasty, but it didnât took long for Josslyn to realize or at least to have an idea what had angered her so much. âPrincess Rosalind,â a small curtsy followed. âI joined the kids who were already playing here. My deepest apologies if we have angered you somehow,â she bowed her head.
there was only anger in rosalindâs eyes as she watched this insignificant girl curtsy. âif those kids were jumping off a bridge, would you join in too?â she barked back, eyes darting to all the kids who were running around. she had the urge to scream at all of them, to force them out of this place but she was a princess and she had to keep her composure. âyou have annoyed me, and i would appreciate it if you all could move off from here.âÂ
she stood up straighter, eyes narrowing in on josslyn. âwho are you?â rose asked, wondering if this was just some commoner that had managed to sneak their way into the palace and into these royal gardens.Â

He nodded and smiled at her and watched as she ran down the pathway. For a moment, he wasnât sure if it was the alcohol or the desire to spend more time with her. Leo slowly started heading in the same direction as the young princess. He admired her sense of self and her ability to wrap men like him around her finger⊠At least, thatâs what she seemed to be doing. He kept his hands in the pockets of his coat while he kept an eye out for her. For a moment, he had thought he lost her. âRosalind?â He called out. âDid I lose you?â Leo asked.Â
rosalind was hurrying off down the path, seemingly thinking that she would be alone as she thought about traversing the town to see what everyone had gotten up to during these events. it was only when that man, leoâs voice rang out, did she huff with annoyance. she came to a stop, debating on whether to let him eat her dust or to let him tag along. finally with a sigh she replied, âif you donât hurry up, you might.âÂ
she resumed her walking, not exactly caring if he caught up to her or not. âi do wonder if iâm being stalked now.â rosalind mumbled to herself, glancing behind her to see if leo was anywhere near. it was so unusual, for someone to try to catch up with her -- to go after her. it made her curious, but at the same time paranoid. what did he want with her? why was he doing this? what in the world was going on?Â

AS THE KING OF AURA , there are things expected of him . in general , at events such as these â and he knows there are others who put judgement on his thinking . his daughter , for one . sheâs been raised well , himself and her mother did a fine job with her . sometimes , though , he worries . he worries that they hadnât done enough to teach her about the world and that , with annabellaâs death , it is now too late . once upon a time he would have chalked it up to them having the rest of time to let her learn lifeâs cruel lessons , but he will not let her make similar mistakes he had . he cannot let his daughterâs stubbornness throw her into turmoil when the kingdoms themselves are hanging by a thread .
heâs had his men searching for her all evening and once they lock eyes , thereâs a certain wave of relief that washes over him . yet , with rosalind in his sight , another list of fears entirely arise . what has she been doing ? has she offended anyone , god forbid one of the royal families ? his brotherâs marriage will do well to keep alliances with one kingdom , he canât have anything risk the potential ties with the other kingdoms . one day she will marry too , to bring their family honor and align themselves with the right side of history . he would like to say she could marry who she chooses , or even have the choice to marry at all âŠÂ but choices are not for those with royal titles .
â  does that mean you havenât been smiling , then ?  â  he glances down at her with a disapproving look . appearances are more important than ever and he needs her to understand that . if she could do only one thing for him , it would be to behave . nicholas sighs at her words , expression softening . he hates when she speaks to him like that but he knows he can be harsh . it only ever comes from a place of love . does she not know that ?  â  you say that as if you havenât been hiding off elsewhere . what have you been doing ?  â
although, rosalind was good at keeping up appearances and acting like a noble through most of the festivities -- she did always seem to disappear during the evening. always feeling to suffocated after awhile during these events, too many people -- too much laughing, and talking and dancing. she liked when things were quiet, when she could read and write her poetry or just stare after the flowers in the garden. she use to be able to get away with such disappearing acts when she was young, and when her mother died, but now that she was getting older, it was harder to scurry out of her fatherâs eye.Â
âwhat is there to smile about?â she inquires, glancing at her father. âthomas is being paraded about, people wonât stop talking to me, and my own father seemingly doesnât care a bit about me except if iâm being good.â rosalind huffs, wishing to cross her arms but instead she just holds her hands in front of her. âyou have nothing to worry about, iâm being good just wishing to get away from all this.â she motions to the party. âi went out for some fresh air. am i not allowed to do that anymore?âÂ

âThat seems to be the case, doesnât it?â There were far too many visitors for Landan to keep up with; it seemed like wherever he went, there was an influx of people - it didnât make for a very relaxing environment, even when he didnât have to be working. He had a feeling that his lack of sleep would continue on until after the wedding festivities had finally come to a close. He was already looking forward to that day, although he wouldnât admit that out loud - especially not to the princess. He wasnât so sure about her claim about hating parties and people, but he figured that anyone would be tired of the festivities, so he didnât try to dispute the claim, instead, simply nodding in agreement, despite the fact that heâd never been to a high class party with more people than he could count on his hands before.
Stifling his own laughter, Landan curled his fist up in front of his mouth, doing his best to not draw attention to himself. He nods in understanding when she tells him that itâs getting more difficult for her to sneak away. He doesnât know what thatâs like, to have eyes on him at all times of the day, and, quite frankly, heâs glad about that. He probably wouldnât respond well to being watched. He didnât really know what sort of responsibilities a princess had, though, so he wasnât quite sure how to comfort her. Despite that, he smiled when she said that she was able to make time to listen to him go on about the ideas in his head. The compliment seemed a little like a jab to Landan, but he let it roll off of his back. âThank you - I do my best, considering⊠everything.â Everything being lack of formal training, inability to write and read for the most part, people outside of his family discouraging him from pursuing his dreams. He was just glad that Rosalind was willing to hear him out.
âmm,â she nodded, unimpressed with all that was happening during the festivities. she had never been much of a people person, although, her mother had always been. she hadnât ever picked up on those qualities â always having been more or less like her father. âi do hope itâs not all troubling to you, as it is me. i, at least, hope the animals are doing alright.â rosalind says, turning back to the horses.Â
a smirk of her own appeared on her lips as she turned to watch the man try to calm his laughter. she had been seeing all different types of people, in the most ridiculous of garbs. her comment hadnât meant to be one of such insult, not really knowing what people got sensitive about or not. still, she had to learn about what to say and what not â to speak more carefully, although, she hadnât come to such a realization yet. âyes, donât worry about all that.â she waves her hand at him, as if his inability to read or write wasnât that big of a deal. she thought it common amoung the citizens, but still found herself quite impressed and surprised at landanâs ideas and determination. âthe next time we meet up, i will bring a book or something. iâll teach you some words. besides, how can you become a famous playwright if you lack such abilities.â again, she hadnât meant it in such a harsh way â thinking that her offer was one of great deal and part of their sort-of friendship.Â

Leo chuckled at how flushed he had made the girl. He pulled her a bit closer to him and nodded. âAs you wish, your majesty.â He glance over and saw their exit point. There was a break in the crowd and the song was changing pace. Leo pulled her hand softly as he led her towards it. As soon as the song picked up, he pulled her a bit harder through the crowd and towards the small door. He turned around to see if she had any looks on her face but he didnât notice anything alarming.Â
Shoving the door open, he pushed passed the small crowds of people until he saw another door that lead outside. Holding it open for her, he finally let her hand go. Leo smiled at her and motioned towards the yard. He took a deep breath and chuckled. âHere ya go, youâre free.â He nodded and smiled at her. Leo bowed slightly and turned to leave. âA dealâs a deal, miss. It was a lovely dance.âÂ
the man kept his end of the deal, pulling her through the crowds and towards any viable exit without being seen. everyone too caught up in the party, the dancing, the drinkng. no one caught on as she kept eyeing around them, making sure they werenât going to get caught. nor did she see her father anywhere in sight, so surely, he would take no notice.
it was when they finally made it outside did their hands let go and she was free. rosalind took in a breath of the fresh air, turning to give leo a nod. âthank you.â she gave him a quick smile. âhave a good rest of your evening, sir leo.â rosalind then turned her back on him, racing down the pathway.

rosalind had finally managed to escape to the gardens, only to find a bunch of children and strangers playing around in it. an anger building up in her system as she watched them all dart around the beautiful trees, flowers, and bushes. she wanted to scream at them to not touch any of it. as she came upon the twirling girl, they both nearly fell over.Â
shouldering the other off her rosalind brushed herself off, a look of such disgust and anger on her face. âwhat are you doing here?â she asked, knowing that people from all over had come for the festivities â but more importantly what were they doing in her precious garden. âwho said you could be here?â
Was it appropriate for her age to spin round and round like a whirligig toy in the middle of the garden? Not quote. Did she care about it? Not quite. She saw kids playing in the garden and decided to join. Soon enough she was whirling along with them, laughing an having fun. âAnd you spin and spin, and spin around and then, when I say ânowâ, you stop and run to the closest tree!â she chuckled, whirling, not realizing there was someone approaching her. âNow!â Josslyn called and stopped, almost losing her balance, a roll of laughter erupted from her. Only when she stopped Josslyn realized she almost fell onto that someone.

roisin usually tried not to engage in rosalindâs antics. being insulted and compared to her husbandâs first wife did not appeal to her. being polite and agreeable did little to help; it was as if there was no use trying to connect with her stepdaughter. âiâm afraid weâve all been a little preoccupied with the days events to find time for deep and meaningful conversations. iâm sure you can agree, itâs been a very busy day for everyone.â the queen straightened her back, looking towards the dancers. âyes, i am sure your mother would have dazzled everyone with her wit and ability to make true conversation about the deepest subjects; unfortunately, talents i was never blessed with, but she certainly passed them unto you.â
it was almost as if the pleasantries irked rosalind even more. it seemed she didnât have any effect on her step-mother most of the time, and that was probably what infuriated her the most about all of this. no matter the insults, or comments â the woman hadnât shot back. it was enough to make her angrily breath out through her nose. surely, her mother, god rest her soul, would not be so happy with how rosalind was treating people nowadays. (something that she pushed far back into her mind.)Â
âbusy, boring, and quite annoying.â she hummed, picking up another wine glass from a nearby servant holding a tray. it seemed she would be drinking a little too freely tonight. âdo you ever feel quite silly, knowing you could never fill her shoes?â rosalind asks her step-mother, eyes gazing at the crowd as people danced, conversed, laughed. âalthough, maybe i should pity you. i suppose there would be no one in this world that would be on such a level she was. one, such as yourself, could only dream of being half as perfect.â she sipped from her wine glass again, a sick, cruel smile on her face. âbut i do not have time for pity, or care all that much to feel it for you.â

her parents had warned her that not everyone would take kindly to this marriage - she supposed rosalind was her first encounter. she had expected this, of course. it couldnât be easy accepting new people into oneâs family - although her own family had no issue accepting her when she was the kingâs ward. she supposed everyone was different when it came to matters of family.
her head shook at her words, glancing at the girl through her peripheral vision. â that is not my intent, â she said softly, her gaze fixating back on the corridor in front of her. â i am not a dependent person, he will not have any issues with me. âÂ
it had been a hard pill to swallow the day she learned that prince thomas was to be married off for some political alliance or another. one that wasnât even for love, one where rosalind didnât even know if he would be happy in. would willow be good to him, would she be good for the kingdom of aura? she had worries, but she had known that willow had always been a nice person â that didnât stop the paranoid thoughts. but also, would thomas stop spending so much time with her now that he had his good little wife?
âthatâs good to know.â she nodded curtly at the other woman. âthomas is a good man, he is... very dear to me.â rosalind admits, glancing over at willow. âi only expect that he shouldnât be treated unkindly and to be respected.â if anything else, rosalind would probably fly into a fit of rage if anything were to befall her family. âi hope what you have told me stays true.â

Not terribly talkative then, she noted silently. Avianna prayed that at the very least, the woman would thaw over time in the presence of her sister and perhaps the two might grow close - or at the very least, tolerable.Â
Several guards spurred into movement the moment she did, the curiosity spurring her feet forward. Catching up with the other woman as she pursued the exit, chocolate orbs appraised her quietly for several moments before speaking. âForgive me for speaking so boldly, I trust your family will take excellent care of her, but I will miss my sister dearly once we depart from Aura. I hope you both will become friendly.â
rosalind hadnât exactly waited around for avianna to walk with her, wishing to get out of the palace as fast as she could. it was only when she looked back, noticing the guard that had followed along did she roll her eyes and grumble to herself. of course, it wasnât as if they could move without having some sort of protection. the princess thought maybe she should have just left on her own, then she wouldnât have so many trailing around with her.Â
her eyes flitted towards the other girl, a little surprised at how honest this one spoke. a rarity amoung the nobles, who liked to prance around and pretend all was fine â most of the time, anyway. it wasnât as if they were speaking to her about anything so honestly. âand why would we not?â she tilted her head, almost as if challenging the other girl to say something bad upon her family. âthomas is a good man, iâm sure your sister will be well looked after and respected.â she responds, turning her attention back towards the path to the city.Â
it was hard making friends with people, especially since her mother died. on one hand, she did want to have some sort or relationship with the new woman that had come into her familyâs life but another part of her was always that horrible jealous, possessive, paranoid, spoiled thing. one that didnât want her family branching out, to set their attentions elsewhere but also that fear that something could happen to them all because of such events as this. âyes, well, again, we shall see. i know your sister is nice. i just hope she wonât come to inconvenience thomas or the kingdom of aura is all.â

the festivities of the princeâs wedding had all but annoyed and seemingly tired out the princess. her family had been too busy with the nobles of aura but also of all the incoming people from the other kingdoms that had attended. of course, she had also been busy seeing to those same people and having to be somewhat pleasant. she couldnât truthfully say that she had been wonderful the entire evening, but rosalind was good at not totally embarrassing and making a fool of her family and her kingdom. she knew there were lines she shouldnât cross, and obeyed those rules. still, that didnât stop her from being nasty from time to time or running off during events such as these for an hour or two.Â
the princess flits her way across the floor, eyes trained on her father as she makes her way towards him. it had been expected of him to call upon her at some time, but it had annoyed her just a little about how long it had taken him. even at twenty years old, she was such a spoiled girl still wishing for any and all of her familyâs attentions. always wanting her father, and at the same time, loathing him for all that had happened and how he wouldnât talk about her mother. there were deep rooted issues, still yet to be weeded out but she loved him nonetheless. although, it may not look that way as she approached him with such a frown on her face.Â
âdo not tell me to smile. i think i have heard it enough already today.â she says, moving to stand beside him. rosalind has a wine goblet in hand, one of a few too many for that night. âhave you finally remembered that iâm your daughter and need checking in upon?â rosalind grumbles, taking a sip out of her glass.Â

âiâd like that very much.â he smiled. it never hurt to get to know someone in one of the other courts better, let alone a princess of aura. he and the king had always been close, but heâd not yet appealed to the rest of the royal family. in the back of his mind, dominic could hear nikolinaâs voice â strongly advising him to take any opportunity to pull information from the aurian court.
in the distance, the wedding party was in full swing. dom knew theyâd both need to return to the castle eventually. sooner than later. that drew a heavy sigh from his lips, as he absentmindedly brushed at the fabric of his clothes. as if his chambermaids would ever let him leave the room with so much as a button out of place. ââ i suppose we should return ourselves to the party. if you see your brother, send him my regards. iâd love to be more formally introduced.â there was a slight edge to his tone, not deliberate but present. as if it were a challenge he was proposing, that he and the prince spoke.
rosalindâs mouth flickered into a soft, but short smile. the expression coming and going in a quick succession. she hadnât ever really gotten too involved with any of the other royals from the other kingdoms, having usually only stayed aura. there was music beginning to play loudly, and her attention turned towards the palace. no doubt, her father was probably wondering where she had run off too and would need to return.Â
âunfortunately.â she huffed, her frown deepening. âi would introduce you, but i should probably be off to see my father. iâm sure prince thomas would also be glad for an encounter with you, king dominic. i apologize that i just canât be the one to do it.â before she can make her leave, though, she quickly adds, âi do ask that you do not tell my father that i was trying to run off. he would be quite aggrieved with me. if he asks, i was out to catch some fresh air â it gets stuffy in the palace.â she gave him a curt nod, and went on her way.
