Me: I'm very burnt out after having rehearsals until 9pm literally every day this week, I don't think I can get anything else done but I'll try. Please give me an answer before [time].

After working until [time] but not getting anything done

Me: I need an answer because he needs to know now

Parents: Don't be so demanding, we need to see some more work done

Me: I cannot get anything else done today, I'm exhausted, can he come over please?

They do on a walk, no answer for 30 minutes

Mom, texting: We don't think it's a good idea for him to come over today

Me: It wouldn't have mattered because he can't come over this late anyways

Mom: Then next time we'll just say no when you ask

After finding me crying in my room and hour later from a combination of burnout, stress and missing my boyfriend who I hadn't seen in over a month

Dad: Oh my bad he can come over, we just miscommunicated

Me: No, he can't, because you waited so long to answer. What do you mean "miscommunicated"? I thought you were pretty clear.

Dad: Well, your mom just said you wanted him to come over but had work to do, and I said that that sounded like a bad idea, but I didn't know you had done any of the work we asked you to do.

Parents will ask you to disrupt the day plans you have meticulously planned out in your head on a whim and when you react even slightly negatively they will sigh and shake their head and blame you for always being a shut in

@amity206 it's not the usual Curious Mark™ it's the other arm. It also isn't one mark it's like a dozen or so down the entire underside of my forearm. I've had Weird Skin Issues™ before (looking at you horrible blisters on my arm after having an IV) so it could just be more of that but I think it might be poison ivy, I just have no idea how I got it.

Ok so uh. My arm just like. Started having scratches on it. And like bumps. And I'm kinda freaked out. It's itchy, it kinda seems like poison ivy but idk when tf I would have gotten that this week considering I've just been in rehearsals and shows for the school musical. It started like four days ago and I was like "Eh. It'll be fine. My skin does weird things 🙃." But it is not fine. And now I'm very worried. So uhhhhh if anyone has any idea what it might be pls send help

Ok so forgive me for the long-ass rant but this reminds me of a conversation I had a couple days ago with two of my friends during my neuroscience class. For context, I am half Hispanic (🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷) and both of them are one quarter Hispanic:

*Person B is reading the ingredients to the mushroom jerky they just gave me while A and I are discussing why it tastes so weirdly good*

Unironically, this is to some degree a consequence of the trend of everything being a subscription. Hear me out.

You can't save money anymore. Even if that would solve that problem (which it wouldn't because there are many other issues), it just isn't possible. You can't go "this year I will save up to buy this Nice Thing™" because that Nice Thing™ isn't $100 it's $10 a month until you run out of money and then you can't have it anymore.

Let's take Netflix as an example. When accessing a movie went from "Spend some money on a DVD" to "Pay us a small amount monthly and you get all of them", it lowered the barrier of entry, and it let people see more movies, because now they had more options. The problem is Netflix doesn't care about you getting to watch movies, they care about you giving them money. Netflix nowadays is worse than buying DVDs ever was, because they've fallen into the patterns of every large publicly traded company:

Shitty quality of service: 4K only being available on expensive smart TVs that spy on you even if you pay extra specifically to watch things in 4K, even though the website doesn't mention that restriction.

Consumer hostile business practices: Needing five different subscriptions to watch the five most popular movies of any given week because all of them want your money (and god forbid they cooperate, that would hurt the bottom line!)

Corporate greed: Subscription prices rise at least once a year, significantly faster than inflation, and features get removed. See: ads being quietly added into paid plans and charging extra to get back the service you're paying for (not seeing ads)

These things happen to publicly traded companies because:

Users are just sources of money. The company only cares about the shareholders. Quality of service can be bare minimum as long as the users don't actually leave the platform.

Cooperating is financially disincentivized. Cooperating means compromises, and compromises sound bad to shareholders. If the users have to subscribe to five different things, invest in all of them. If they cooperated the shareholders wouldn't get to hedge their investments as much.

Companies are legally obligated to continually increase revenue. Shareholders can invest early, wait for the service to get so bad that people abandon it and then cash out before it crashes. The users are just sources of money.

Capitalism as a system forces companies to do this shit, and it only benefits the shareholders who do nothing but shift their money around. Whenever a company goes public they will end up going the way of Netflix and YouTube within a couple of years, as has been shown time and time again.
