Kai also has, like Sascha and Kim, the added feature of being gender neutral. In Germany this went so far that up to the year 2008 (where the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany ruled that there is no obligation that a name has to be sex-specific), you were legally required to give your Kid a gendered second name if you wanted to name them Kim, Kai, Sascha or Alex.

My chosen name, Kai, has origins in both Japan and Germany, among other places (I chose it for the German meaning; most of my lineage is German). Even though I love the name and am very attached to it, I've always been a little iffy about it because of the varying origins, as it can be viewed as appropriative when taken as the Japanese version. Got any advice on how to make the distinction clearer? I really don't want to offend anyone by making them think I'm appropriating the name.

My friend Kaitlyn goes by Kai. I truly don’t think the distinction is necessary in this case because it’s so widely used for so many reasons. If someone Japanese approaches you on the subject, calmly and politely explain that you’re using the German origin.

If someone non-Japanese tries to accuse you of appropriation, they’re…rather entitled, aren’t they? I would ignore them, personally, but how you handle it at that point is certainly up to you.
