Weekly BillCharts Top 50 - 2023 Week 16
Studio Ghibli finally notches a #1 with a soundtrack song from one of its weirdest movies, Pom Poko, while Nina Simone and Christine and the Queens debut new hits. Also, Rihanna visits the Top 5 for the first time in 4 years, and Bright Eyes make their first debut in the Top 10.
More after the break.
Joys of Spring from Pom Poko's soundtrack moves 3-1 in its 3rd week, giving the animation studio their very first #1. This now outpeaks Only Yesterday's cover of The Rose, which debuted #2 a few months ago. The song has been able to cater to the current seasonal vibe by providing an uplifting and joyous anthem, bringing much-appreciated levity after the charts' more melancholic feel of the start of this year. The song also boasts one of the longer rises to #1, having taken 3 weeks to hit the summit of the charts.
Below, Lana Del Rey and Bleachers' Margaret rises 5-2 in its 3rd week, sealing this song as the biggest hit for both artists in ages. Though Snow on the Beach featured Lana and had a solid run, her contribution to that song was fairly limited. Lana's last true hit as a lead artist was Summertime Sadness from 2016. However, Lana did have a brief chart run with Born To Die, Lust For Life and Dark Paradise in 2017; though none of those songs charted for longer than 4 weeks. Bleachers, meanwhile, haven't charted any hits since 2017, though Jack Antonoff did have some success earlier this year with fun's We Are Young, though the song didn't chart high for too long unfortunately.
Sinnerman by Nina Simone debuts at #3, marking the late artist's first song to chart since Stars back in 2016. That song had been fueled by an appearance in Bojack Horseman's season 3 finale. This song, meanwhile, was featured at the end of David Lynch's Inland Empire. The song clocks in at over 10 minutes, yet another song to defy common wisdom in becoming a hit despite its length.
Christine and the Queens and 070 Shake's True Love debuts at #4, marking the french artist's 2nd single for his new album, PARANOÏA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE. 070 Shake also matches her previous peak: the Tame Impala remix of Guilty Conscience which debuted at #4 back in August 2020. This song also marks the 2nd collab between both artists: Body by 070 Shake had peaked at #28 last year despite charting for 6 weeks. Rounding out the Top 5, Rihanna's Don't Stop The Music vaults 28-5, giving her a first Top 5 song since 2019 when both Princess of China with Coldplay and Lemon with NERD both landed in the spot.
Below, Lanterns on the Lake's String Theory dips 1-6, Ethel Cain's Sun Bleached Flies holds 7-7 in its 26th consecutive week in the Top 10, Tim Janis' Amazing Grace falters 4-8, and Ethel Cain's Thoroughfare rolls down 8-9. Bright Eyes' Lua debuts #10, marking the band's first song to ever chart. The song was featured on the Life is Strange 1 soundtrack.
Outside the Top 10, Bruce Springsteen's Born To Run debuts at #14, Debby Friday and Uñas' I GOT IT vaults 31-15, Andrea Bocelli & Ariana Grande's E più ti penso lands at #16, Sam Roberts Band' Picture Of Love shutters in at #18, and Syd Matters' Obstacles charts at #22.
Below is the full Top 50.

Today in BillCharts History (Apr. 16th)
Daily Charts:
2014: Burn It Down by Linkin Park spends a 2nd of 5 days at #1. This song is the first song to ever stay at #1 for 5 days; songs before this had either had 4-day #1s or 6 day #1s.
2015: Holiday by Stands With Fists rose 14-1. This was the song's only day at the top; the very next day it would get dethroned by the debut of Gravity Falls' theme at #1, a song I much prefer to be honest.
2016: The Harold Song by Kesha holds #1 for a 2nd day in a row. This was Kesha's 4th day at the top in a row; C'Mon had spent 2 days at the top beforehand.
2017: We Know The Way from Moana featuring Lin-Manuel Miranda and Opetaia Foa'i debuts #1 for the 1st of 4 days at the top. This is to this day Lin-Manuel Miranda's only charting song. Whether this is a good or bad thing is left to the reader's discretion.
Weekly Charts:
2018 (week of April 21st): Björk's Unison debuts at #1. After having a decent track record since December 2017, this song marks the last time Björk will see a #1 debut, or even a Top 5 hit for many years. Despite many songs charting in between, Bjôrk will not see the top 5 until 2020 with I Miss You; a song that unfortunately didn't have as much of an impact as even Unison.
2019 (week of April 20th): Magic Forest by MRM Team lands the relaxation music initiative a 2nd and final #1. The song is for some ungodly reason not available on Spotify, nor is it accessible on YouTube. Shame, because it's easily the best of their 3 charting tracks.
2020 (week of April 18th): Fueled by a Lord of the Rings hyperfixation, Into The West by Annie Lennox debuts at #1. This marks her first appearance since Eurythmics' Here Comes The Rain Again charted in July 2015.
2021 (week of April 17th): Heaven or Las Vegas by Cocteau Twins debuts at #1, giving the group their only #1 to date, and the second of 3 hit songs that year. However, it is not their biggest; Iceblink Luck would debut that summer and despite only peaking at #2, would become the biggest hit song of the year.
2022 (week of April 16th): Carry Me Out by Mitski lands her a 2nd #1 hit. This number one would immediately be followed by Townie, which would mark the 3rd and last of Mitski's #1s to date. With these songs and Love Me More, Mitski landed nothing but chart toppers for her first 3 charting songs, which is a pretty rare feat.

The number ones for 2023: Weeks 6 to 15!
Immediately after Long Long Time set the record for the biggest week of the year, Dearly Beloved bust the yearly record wide open, beating the song by over 30 listens. Since then, no songs have gotten more than 50 listens in a single week. This week's #1, String Theory, has the largest play count since Dearly Beloved.

The number one songs this year so far!
Long Long Time dethrones Anchor for the biggest #1 week of the year. Also, every single #1 in 2023 so far has been a debut. Time will tell how long it will take for the trend to be bucked.

Weekly BillCharts Top 50 - 2023 Week 15
This season has been unreasonably good to Ethel Cain, who now boasts an impressive 5 songs in the top 10. This comes only weeks after she locked down the Top 3, and after spending a total of 10 weeks at #1 since last October. Plus, Lanterns on the Lake break through with a #1 smash, and Tim Janis hits his highest peak on the charts since 2020.
More info after the break.
Lanterns on the Lake hits #1 with their newest single, "String Theory". The group first made their appearance on the charts late last year with "Through The Cellar Door", whose run was fueled by its appearance in Life is Strange: Before The Storm. The song charted for 7 weeks, but wasn't able to peak higher than #23 in that whole time. Interestingly, the song itself uses the topic of alternate universes as a way to comfort oneself over a failing relationship, which could be seen as a Life is Strange-adjacent topic.
Ethel Cain and Wicca Phase Springs Eternal hold the #2 spot for a 2nd week with god's country (demo). Despite failing once more to get the #1 with this newest hit, Ethel Cain herself is doing very well for herself, as she has locked down half of the top 10's positions:
2. god's country (demo) 6. American Teenager 7. Sun Bleached Flies 8. Thoroughfare 9. Crush
This is a very notable achievement, as Ethel Cain is the first artist to lock up half of the top 10 without an explicit album bomb of sorts.
Tumblr media
Only Lena Raine's 2 bouts in late 2018 were not explicitly fueled by an album or concert bomb, though all 5 of her songs did come from the Celeste soundtrack. Ethel's songs, meanwhile, are split across 2 projects and an unreleased demo. Here's a quick rundown of how each other artist has landed this record:
Harry Mack: Slime Rancher 1 OST (5 songs, 2019); Slime Rancher 2 OST (10 songs, 2022)
Christine and the Queens: Chris era concert bomb (8 songs, 2018); Redcar les adorables étoiles album bomb (6 songs, 2022)
Serena Ryder: Christmas Kisses concert bomb (7 songs, 2018)
Penny Parker: DeReconstruct EP bomb + another song (5+1 songs, 2021)
Barrett Wilbert Weed: Heathers soundtrack bomb* (5 songs, 2021)
*Heathers' soundtrack was able to lock down 9 of 10 songs in the Top 10 that week; Barrett Wilbert Weed simply appeared as an artist on 5 of those.
"Joys of Spring" from Pom Poko's soundtrack holds steadfast at #3, holding the highest peak for any Ghibli soundtrack song thus far. Tim Janis' Amazing Grace cover from his newest album, Songs of Spring (interesting theme running through these songs!) debuts at #4. This is Tim Janis' highest peak since 2020, when Ever I Love You landed at #1. Rounding out the Top 5 is last week's #1, Margaret by Lana Del Rey featuring Bleachers, falling 1-5.
Rapid fire through Ethel Cain's songs: American Teenager returns at #6 after nearly a year since its original run, Sun Bleached Flies dips 5-7 in its record breaking 25th week in the Top 10 in a row; Thoroughfare moves up 9-8, and Crush makes a big leap 42-9, after the song had all but been written off as a flop.
And finally, rounding out the Top 10 is Niontay and MIKE's "WHEREDEYAT???", holding the top 10 for a second week as it falls 4-10.
Outside the Top 10, Linkin Park's Fighting Myself hits a new peak as it rises 36-15, as does Demi Lovato's Heart Attack (Rock Version) which moves 18-16. The Lumineers' Stubborn Love debuts #21, continuing the push to chart faves from 10 years ago as part of the upcoming 10-Year Anniversary of the BillCharts.

Weekly BillCharts Top 50 - 2023 Week 6
Have you heard of the Frog Wizard? He walks around the fields, checking people's vibes, and taking those with not-so-great vibes to a relaxing place. He offers to stay with us for as long as we'd like, as a gentle tune plays. And sure enough, this tune was the mainstay of the week, netting one of the biggest #1 debuts of all time.
Plus, Ice Spice & PinkPantheress notch a new peak, and Lil Narnia and fats'e notch their biggest hit in years. More info after the break.
Dearly Beloved from Kingdom Hearts 2 is this week's massive hotshot debut as it crashes into the charts at the top with an impressive 135 plays. This now makes it the 3rd largest debut of all time. Here's the run down of the big debuts:
Ethel Cain - Sun Bleached Flies (203 plays, 2022)
Taylor Swift - gold rush (168 plays, 2022)
Yoko Shimomura - Dearly Beloved (135 plays, 2023)
Novo Amor - Carry You (118 plays, 2022)
Jenny Owen Youngs - Wake Up (110 plays, 2017)
This also marks Yoko Shimomura's very first song to chart, which is interesting since her Mario & Luigi music had been a childhood staple for many years. Funnily enough, I have not ever actively played any Kingdom Hearts games, but I know enough from cultural osmosis (and by that I mostly mean Penny Parker's LP of the first game).
Ethel Cain's Sun Bleached Flies rises back to #2 in its 16th week. The song has now spent 10 weeks in the top 2, and 15 in the top 5. This only further extends her dominance for these ranges, and also inches her closer to overtaking Taylor Swift's State of Grace for longest chart run in the top 10. As a matter of fact, she now breaks the tie for 2nd longest Top 10 run, eclipsing the 2020 mega-hit Bury Us by The Naked and Famous.
Tumblr media
PinkPantheress and Ice Spice's Boy's A Liar Pt. 2 notches a new peak for both artists as it debuts at a lofty #3. Ice Spice had a few weeks ago landed a #4 debut with No Clarity, and Picture In My Mind had given PinkPantheress a minor hit that peaked at #12 last year. Rounding out the top 5, PRIZM's 10/10 dips 3-4, and Linda Ronstadt's Long Long Time falls 1-5 after its chart topping debut last week.
fats'e, Lil Narnia and Anxiety Attacks' another night on the edge drops in at #6, notching a new top 10 hit for both fats'e and Lil Narnia. Both artists had #1 hits in 2020 with picking myself up again and Every Day respectively, but both artists haven't seen the top 10 in years. Lil Narnia had more luck with How Could I, but that song peaked at #7, but failed to hit this range of the charts since. This means that another night on the edge is the 2nd highest peak for both artists.
Rounding out the top 10, Tommee Profitt and Fleurie's cover of Chasing Cars lands at #7, Christine and the Queens' iT rolls in 13-8, close to its #7 peak on the Weekly Charts. Harumi Miyako's cover of The Rose, Ai Wa Hana, Kimi Wa Sono Tane, falls 2-9. And finally, Richard Freeman's Endless Mind lands at #10, giving the top 10 some chill jazzy instrumental vibes.
Outside the Top 10, Joe Hisaishi's An Unusual Painting and Yumi Arai's Rouge no Dengon continue rising 22-14 and 16-13 respectively, in representation of the Kiki's Delivery Service soundtrack. Also, Brittany Davis' Pink Flowers vaults 44-24, finally entering the top 25 after 3 weeks.
Below is the full Top 50.

Today in BillCharts History (Feb. 5th)
Daily BillCharts:
2014: Mr. Brightside by The Killers rises 5-1 for the 1st of 2 days at #1.
2015: If I Die Before You by Ludwig Gorranson holds #1 for the final day of its 8-day #1 run, breaking the record at the time for the longest chart-topping run. This record would be tied later that year but not broken until 2016. This song will go on to be the biggest hit of that year.
2016: Pain Told Love by Tribe Society and Kiesza rises 16-1 for the first of 4 days at #1.
2017: Remembrance by Two Steps From Hell rises 2-1, the only day the song will spend at #1 in its 33 day chart run.
Weekly BillCharts:
2018 (week ending on Feb 10th): Vincent Rubinetti's Mario Kart 64 mashup of Rainbow Road and the Credits song debuts at #1. The song would later rechart in 2021 during a Mario Kart 64 soundtrack bomb.
2019 (week ending on Feb 9th): Nina Nesbitt's The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change debuts at #1, marking her first of two chart-topping hits to date. The 2nd one is her collab with Gabrielle Aplin, Miss You 2, which charts a year later in April.
2020 (week ending on Feb 8th): Mac Miller's Best Day Ever makes a massive splash on the charts. Just below, Christine and the Queens' People, I've been sad starts his La vita nuova era with a #2 debut. This song will hold the #2 position for 3 non-consecutive weeks, which was at the time the longest time spent at this peak. The record has since been tied by one song, Oh Girl by The Chi-Lites, but has not been beaten.
2021 (week ending on Feb. 6th): Paramore's 26 re-enters the charts at #1, after having initially charted for 3 weeks in August 2017. This is one of the longest stretches of time between a song's debut on the BillCharts and it reaching the top spot.
2022 (week ending on Feb. 5th): Kat and the Hurricane's Dream Come True debuts at #1, and goes on to become one of the biggest hit songs of the year. Mitski's Love Me More also debuts that week at #2, her very first charting song. It hits the top spot a week later and becomes the first of 3 consecutive #1 hits for the indie artist.

The number one songs this year so far!
Long Long Time dethrones Anchor for the biggest #1 week of the year. Also, every single #1 in 2023 so far has been a debut. Time will tell how long it will take for the trend to be bucked.

Weekly BillCharts Top 50 - 2023 Week 5
It's a big week for tie-in songs, as both the most recent episode of The Last of Us and Studio Ghibli's Only Yesterday run away with the top 2 by a solid margin. Plus, Caroline Polachek and Crying debut new songs in the Top 10. More info after the break.
Long Long Time by Linda Ronstadt blasts to the top with a whopping 89-play debut entirely fueled by the tearjerking romance between Bill and Frank. Tagging in at the runner-up position is Ai Wa Hana, Kimi Wa Sono Tane by Harumi Miyako, a japanese cover of The Rose by Amanda McBroom which featured in the credits of Studio Ghibli's Only Yesterday. It notched a solid 56 plays.
PRIZM's 10/10 slides 1-3 this week despite having double the plays of its #1 debut last week. Ethel Cain's Sun Bleached Flies continues its absurd Top 5 run as it slides 3-4, notching a 15th consecutive week in the top 10. This makes it tied for the 2nd longest run in the top 10 of the weekly charts' 6 year tenure.
