They came for the free pizza and went when someone mentioned a party near Capitol Hill. At least that was Barbara’s opinion. Internships, particularly paid internships out this way, were often given to those owed patronage by a candidate. Even though she didn’t play that way, it seemed she ended up with exactly the same kind of candidates.

Only Dick remained. He seemed to share her passion for getting her wayward hometown under control. Too many yahoos running around, being locked up for what seemed like minutes before being streeted again.

This particular bill had a lot of crime control measures, though she lamented the lack of jurisdiction over one key point. Federal lawmakers had no jurisdiction on drunk driving or alcohol consumption. That was the province of state and county authorities so she had to content herself with this.

Gun control was on her agenda. Stiffer penalties for repeat offenders. Mandatory minimum incarceration periods and, her favorite part, a proposal for a new federal prison to be built to the South of the city would bring both jobs and the promise of greater safety to a city riddled with organized crime and offenders of the RICO Act.

At three on a Saturday morning, she was ready to pack it in too. Already she’d caught herself writing ridiculous statements into the legislation. The law was far too precious to screw around with. Better to pack it in and go the hell home to bed.

Barbara lived close enough to the Hill that she could walk without fear even at this time of night. For her remaining staffer, she wondered if she should call him a cab. She hadn’t bothered to learn where he was hanging his hat while in D.C. and feared a little bit for the safety of the handsome young man passing the clubs alone at this ungodly hour.

“Screw it,” she declared, tossing her pen towards the cup on her desk and missing entirely from fatigue. “I’m done editing this monster. Next thing you know I’ll be including mandatory nap times for legislators.”

Her laptop screen was closed. The only light in the room coming from a small lamp in the corner. She walked over to the overstuffed couch and fell back onto it, her legs splaying carelessly to show everything up to and including her toned thighs.

“I should get a pull out in here. God knows I have the room in my capital improvements budget.”

Dick was happy to hear her call it quits for the night so that he could also so the same. He wanted to at least work as hard as she did while he was working for her. It would look good for his references, plus it would go a long ways to have a congresswoman vouche for his work ethic.

 He leaned back in his chair and looked over to her. “I wouldn’t be opposed to the idea, as long as you’d leave it open for mid day naps.” he said with a chuckle.
