#my favorite thing is when people will write full essays about how CLEARLY the author/writers/etc fucked up because so much of what a #character does in the story is WRONG and NOT WHAT THEY'D BE LIKE with zero thought whatsoever about whether they actually #just misinterpreted the character from the start #like. I'm not gonna act like writers never mess their characters up. but if you're arguing that half of what they do seem out of character #to you. you just don't know the character. sorry :/ #i honestly think that in a vast majority of cases it's not them being OOC it's just you having a faulty interpretation of the character. #and maybe the version of them in your head is better/more interesting/etc and #that's fine. you can imagine them differently in your head or whatever. but don't conflate your version with the person that's #actually in the story #like if it's a particularly long-running work or there are clear influences that warp the creators' perception over time (like an #adaptation) or the writer(s) have changed or something like that then the odds of it being actually OOC are obviously much higher #but barring that scenario i feel like it's usually not OOC it's usually just you

change and growth is possible, but it can be a complicated and lengthy process that's usually pretty messy. try to give people grace if you can and if they're sincerely trying, but not at the expense of your own peace. don't sacrifice yourself for someone else's character development.
