We don’t talk enough about how Ponyboy is Johnny and Dally’s favourite guy. Like they just like him so fucking much and feel protective towards him. I know they laugh at all his witty, sarcastic quips and enjoy his company so much. They gave him their jackets!!!!! I fucking love them
I think out of the whole gang, both ponyboy and dallas are the most emotional but while ponyboy accepts it, dallas does everything to change that part of himself, both him and ponyboy are so different but at the same time the same
That is a very interesting ask, anon…. Dally//Ponyboy parallels my beloved….
I’m not sure if I think they are the most emotional per se… But they have these volatile emotions that hit them very hard and devastatingly. They also have the least amount of control over their emotions; Ponyboy because he’s so young and generally an emotional person, and Dally because he buries any emotions he considers weak and leans into anger, making him basically a ticking time bomb.
But yes emotions play a large role in both their characters and they culminate at Johnny’s death. The difference is that Pony allows himself to grieve and accepts his emotions while Dally is unable to and doesn’t allow himself to. Pony has always accepted his emotions and feelings and that has allowed him the ability to process something as terrible as Johnny’s death. He’s not okay, but he’s able to take it because he’s kept himself open; to other people, to emotions even if they are considered weak.
(I wrote a post on the greasers and how they all suck at handling emotions but I cannot find it ughhh fuck Tumblr)
While Johnny and Dally often go together as characters and you can’t analyse one without the other, I don’t think they’re mirrors of each other. I’ve seen the idea that Johnny might’ve reminded Dally of him when he was younger (even though Dally and Johnny have barely a year difference), but tbh, I just don’t think Dally was ever a Johnny or that Johnny could become a Dally.
Even though Johnny isn’t hardened like Dally, he’s not innocent or has an inherent goodness that the world has yet to snuff out. He knows the cruelty of the world, and starts off the novel as this very jaded person who no longer sees hope or point in the life he’s living due to his dire circumstances. And yet, over the course of the novel, he chooses to be good even though it’s something he knows will hurt him, and even understands and decides that it’s better than the alternative even if you do get hurt.
Dally’s mirror is Ponyboy. Ponyboy could become hateful and angry like Dally and decided to harden himself against the world in order to not get hurt. We even see a glimpse of this Ponyboy; a Ponyboy who threatened people and could hurt them before they hurt him, who thought it was better to get tough rather than get hurt. Ponyboy decides the only reason to fight is for self-defence, but Dally’s been brought up believing that violence is self-defence at its core and he constantly fights because it’s all he knows, because fighting makes you tough and once you get tough you don’t get hurt. Soda even says this at one point:
If Pony ended up hardening himself to everything including love and beauty, and decided to keep on fight, he could have ended up as Dally. Maybe not to a T, but someone similar in those core ways.
And yet Ponyboy is also Johnny’s mirror. And that’s who he chooses to embody. Rejecting violence, keeping himself open to the world and loving it despite its cruelty and harm. Seeing beauty in everything and understanding the world isn’t black and white.
hi, I saw on a post about the gangs ideal partners and you said that you see darry as gay, could you expand on that as its not really a headcannon I've seen and it sounds interesting!
Hello anon!! I’d love to expand on it!
So basically I find it interesting how Johnny and Darry are the only characters out of the main greasers to never have been implied to be attracted to another character.
Soda and Steve have their girlfriends, Two-Bit has his blondes and Marcia, Dally has Sylvia and flirts with Cherry, Ponyboy has a bit of a crush on Cherry; but with Johnny, we’re told he has never shown any interest while we’re told pretty much nothing about Darry’s love life.
I think it’s because at its core, the Outsiders is about male friendships and bonds. Darry’s not even mentioned to have a past girlfriend, maybe some lost love who he couldn’t be with due to circumstances, despite how easy a storyline it could have been. Instead Darry’s past is about his friend who he drifted away from and a lost future.
I think Darry being gay makes a lot of sense and adds another layer to his story. Paul being his… maybe not boyfriend but someone who he had feelings for and maybe Paul did reciprocate those feelings but they just couldn’t work out. It might’ve felt that they never could (due to the time period) but with the Curtis parents’ death, what time they had together was cut short, and Paul ends up just becoming another thing Darry loses (loss is such a constant theme in the Outsiders and especially with Darry’s character… holds head in hands…..).
Even outside of Paul’s character, Darry’s character is very immersed in the themes of masculinity, his traditional juxtaposing Pony’s unconventional and their struggles to understand each other due to it, and he strikes me as someone who just prefers male company more (the boys’-boyification of Darrel Curtis….). We hear a lot about Darry’s friends, from the gang, to the ones he goes skiing with, to Tim Shepard in the TV Show (so I’ve heard). The only two females he interacts with his Two’s mom and his own mom.
Since the headcanon actually originally belongs to @obliqueletterkennyreference and she has a lot of thoughts on it, you could also ask her about it too. Or you can add to this post, VP?
Something something… Being gold is to love the world and keep yourself open to it. Something something Sodapop ‘is beautiful and golden like their mother’ and ‘has golden hair and a bright smile* and ‘loves life and gets drunk off living’. Something something Ponyboy and Sodapop are said to look similar even though Ponyboy doesn’t see it and are often compared (esp by the two most insightful characters in the book; Cherry and Johnny). Something something Ponyboy sees Sodapop as gold and often talks about how Soda’s everything good in world while is he is blind to the fact he is gold and good too. Something something Ponyboy decides to stay gold while Sodapop ends the novel in a bad place and possibly doesn’t stay gold (or was never as gold as Pony thought he was)
I’m constantly trying to make race, gender and sexuality headcanons on the characters but tbh there’s very few concrete ones (such as for Johnny who is Latino and homoromantic asexual to me and Darry as a gay man). Take Ponyboy; for me, it really depends on the context. Sometimes he’s a transgirl to me, other times he’s cismale (after he went through a period of questioning because he’s never fit the mould of masculinity that he’s seen all his life). Sometimes he’s bisexual, other times he’s aromantic (and thought he had romantic feelings for Cherry because she was the first girl he felt something for). I’ve always thought as Dally as white, but the musical has made me more compelled towards POC!Dally (especially comparing him with his narrative foil, Bob, who is a white man, and how society treats both of them differently despite being similar). Cherry is always not cis to me but I’m unsure if I see her as a transmale or non-binary.
“I cleared the rubble from Israeli airstrikes, tilled the soil, and planted seeds. This is our home, our land. Everything will return more beautiful than before.”
So I thought I ordered a similar copy to one I already have to mark text and add notes and so on... and it's not the exact same, this one has a discussion guide I find highly interesting, especially this.
Mohammed is an engineer and founded the Gazan 3D printing company, Tashkeel3D. His contributions to the medical sector in Gaza have saved so many lives in light of Israel not allowing medical parts and equipment to enter Gaza during the years of blockade.
And right now he is under fire in the north of Gaza while his family is in the south. He needs help saving his life and the lives of his family as he is raising funds to get his family across the Rafah border.
