There it is again, Ravus pretending himself the respectable host when they both know he is far from it. Were the son of Tenebrae to have his way, that mechanical hand would be closed around the chancellor’s throat, and that would be the end of it. Fortunate that he knows better than to let himself dream of such things, his need for revenge A FAINT PARALLEL to Ardyn’s own. He will not jeopardize that wish any sooner than he would his darling sister’s life.
❝Funny,❞ Ardyn grins, almost to himself, ❝that so many ancient relics fail to come with a warning label.❞
It’s only half a joke, the edges laced with a hint of bitterness that harkens back to the damned Crystal. Of course, Ravus is like to interpret the remark as mockery. As he should. A careless mistake like this one SHOULD sting a bit.
Tumblr media
The commander’s divided attention is noted, and Ardyn, refusing to be ignored, takes to the shelves that line the walls, plucking a number of books from their perch only to methodically discard each one over a shoulder. Judging by the ever immaculate state of the manor and its grounds, Ravus does so prefer for things to remain in their proper place.
❝One size fits all, hm? Tell me that’s not what you were hoping for.❞
He should be more angry, but the blithely delivered insult seems to roll off of him- Failing to give rise to anything more than the dull and leaden sensation of having accepted defeat. Ravus is, however, irked by the lack of care Izunia displays towards his family’s belongings.
“What did the literature do to offend you, other have the gall to merely exist in your presence?” he asks rhetorically, pushing away from the desk to clean up after his unwanted ‘guest’.
“What I was hoping for-” Fleuret continues, returning to a standing position to gently slide the books back into their proper order.
“-was justice. And I was a fool to believe that any king of Lucis would actually come to the aid of an outsider. I suppose the Oracle’s role in their ever vaunted prophecy means nothing.”
Or more like Ravus meant nothing to them. Tenebrae remained, despite the imperial occupation, a neutral nation ruled by a matriarchy. Would that he were in Lunafreya’s place, could he have been able the sway those gaunt, armored specters?
It is useless to think upon such things. All that he can do is try and adapt. Survive, as he always had.

“Cloud Strife ; SOLDIER, Second Class.” He says his name with pride, chest expanding as he speaks ; while no first, SOLDIER was no easy feat to get into ( that he knew too well ), and there was only one more promotion between him and his ambitions. “And don’t call me ‘boy’.” Cloud corrects, regardless of the fact that spar told him enough information that coming out the victor in a real fight against the High Commander was slim. A sweat was hardly breaking. While Cloud was showing the restraint required of a spar, he was also not known for his mercy either. This man didn’t need it.
Tumblr media
“All the M-Tek’s this good? Makes you wonder why ShinRa’s spending out resources to both factions.” It made Cloud nervous; what if SOLDIER, in just a few more years - if that - became obsolete? Without Sephiroth and without the most notorious First Classes around and inspiring the public eye, SOLDIER has changed. Cloud had hoped to replace the First that Sephiroth used to be.
“N’ what’s your name?”
Ravus notes the swell of chest and straightened posture upon revealing his rank in SOLDIER. Truly, he was a step above those who managed to merely survive the procedure- It had been some time since he’d enjoyed a decently challenging match.
“Apologies, Second Class Strife. Interesting fighting style. Very interesting, indeed,” he remarks, having sensed the edge of someone who’s seen live action and not merely pranced about in a training room.
The High Commander smirks just slightly at the question of Magitek Knights’ capabilities, glancing at the ranks of men and women clad in white, silver and blue- Ravus donning a similar, if more elaborately tailored uniform with purple accents. The color of ‘royalty’. He wasn’t sure if that had been an intentional dig at his past life or not, on ShinRa’s part.
“High Commander Ravus Nox Fleuret. Magitek is a new age for ShinRa, as we undergo more enhancements than even that of SOLDIERs. Fusion of medical and technological capabilities has lead to the discovery of life-like prosthetics. Some of us willingly replace even naturally functioning limbs or organs in exchange for Magitek ones. I was not so lucky to have been given the luxury of a choice.”
That statement hangs heavy in the air, Ravus chuckling darkly as he flexes the armored arm and hand strapped to his shoulder and chest. It moved fluidly, as though flesh and blood existed beneath the polished shell.

Is that dread the chancellor spies in mismatched eyes as he enters, or is it but his imagination? Surely the newly appointed high commander is not so foolish as to let such malice shine through, and now of all times. He can only imagine the dreadful repercussions that might befall the lady oracle were even the suspicion of discontentment to be brought to the attention of the emperor.
How very lucky he is that Ardyn is so adept at keeping secrets.
Tumblr media
❝Oh, Ravus, must you remain so insistent on propriety and titles?❞ he chides, still grinning, drawing closer than he knows the other man is comfortable with. It does flatter him to see the last son of Tenebrae squirm so in his presence. ❝Are we not old friends by now?❞
Surely he has not forgotten Ardyn’s graciousness, the very same that had procured him a place in the imperial army at much the same time as Lunafreya had accepted her calling in full. Or perhaps, with the current state of affairs concerning her impending marriage, he now resents it? It had not been so at the time, his rage at Lucis and her king the driving force behind Ravus’ decision to work himself half to death in climbing the ranks.
That old fury still seethes within him, though most certainly misdirected in this his time of recovery and shame. Poor thing. So focused as he is on his own misfortune, he is unlikely to ever truly appreciate the marvels of the magitek movement.
❝Verstael really has outdone himself, wouldn’t you say?❞
Ravus doesn’t back away but stubbornly stands his ground, though a caginess causes astriction to stiffen his shoulders and neck noticeably, like a wolf raising it’s hackles. Absentmindedly he runs fingers along the sculpted shapes of the Magitek prosthesis, skin pressing into the elaborate patterns.
“Indeed,” he deadpans, hand closing around the metal wrist to keep the limb from trembling. He’d ensure that he mastered the use of it’s strength and power, but it would take time. Even the additional bulk threw his balance off kilter, so he had been weight training to build up more muscle to compensate.
The last thing he wants to talk about is his humiliation for attempting to seize the Ring of the Lucii, though he does wonder if Ardyn enjoyed the example of corporal punishment as much as the rest of the infantry so obviously had.
Fleuret isn’t about to blame Izunia for that, however- His gambit had failed, he had no one else to blame for his failure but his own naivety and misplaced belief that the Lucian Kings might see him as worthy.
“Is there something you need of me, Chancellor?” he asks politely enough, turning his back to return to his writing desk so he can crumpled up the papers he’d been attempting to scribe upon.

A lot of people are doing vlogs of moving into the DCP and thank god we have security because these morons are openly advertising where they’re staying, how much money they spend, et cetera. I hope none of my future roommates feel the need to vlog every minor aspect of their lives, because I’ll toss their phone/camera/whatever off the fucking balcony.

I’m really sick and tired of roleplayers demonizing other roleplayers who have triggers. Just use tags and/or a read more if you’re going to describe certain things in graphic detail.
I have triggers, very specific triggers, but I still list content I DON’T want to see and need tagged in order to protect myself- That is responsible behavior, not acting literally oppressed because you have a choking kink or whatever else you think is ‘super dark’ content.
I have triggers and I write super dark content. You can do BOTH. Having triggers does not mean we need everything to be ‘PC’ or ‘Disney film/G rated’ and I would fucking LOVE it if you all would stop infantilizing and insulting those of us who have C-PTSD and various other mental illnesses as a result of trauma.

                                                                         “ nothing.”
the white-hair said to the other.  Sitting there, he couldn’t help but stare at the other for a moment. so what? he wanted to spend his time following the other around.  Maybe it was for work, maybe it wasn’t. Thancred tend to try and work things out with people – but this one. Something made him catch a good look on the other and he couldn’t help but want to spend a bit more time around. To gain what the other could do. Maybe even kidnap him for other work — one day.
Though the question in hand, made the male sigh a bit.      “ you make this all seem to be bad. If you wish for me to leave and never come back I can. But you seem to enjoy what I have brought. New adventures that bring more to the table then what you think. — But if you think I’m doing this for something – or someone, you are wrong. I’m doing this because you seem fun. It’s been a while since I met someone like you, and I would rather form a friendship then lose it – if that make any sense. But – like I said, if you wish for me to get out of your hair, I can.”
Well.
It certainly had been awhile since much of anyone had called Ravus ‘fun’, in fact he wasn’t sure that ANYONE has ever referred to him with that particular adjective spoken in the same sentence. Brooding, volatile, and cold- on the other hand- were more intimately familiar descriptors.
He absolutely despises Thancred for making him blush, though he hates himself more for reacting like some naive little waif being courted by a suitor.
“My work is a bit morbid to consider ‘fun’, but if you desire to ghost me during my travels, then I won’t object further.”
His own curiosity is piqued and while he’s normally not a conversationalist, he can’t help but ask a few questions here and there.
“What is it that you do, then? You look a bit too put together to be a simple adventurer.”

"I hate you!"
He's acting his age and he knows it. At least he has that much of an excuse. His eyes sting. Tears are welling up, threatening to spill over, to draw glistening streaks over his cheeks. Sephiroth balls up his fists instead, wills the tears not to fall because that's the last gods damned thing he needs. And what he needs right now is to hang onto his anger.
Somehow, he thought he'd be used to it by now. Nothing but a muzzled pet, a prized science fair project, or a show horse paraded around for a crooning audience. Not a person. Not someone to anybody.
All those life lessons, the wrinkles at the corner of Ravus's eyes when he narrated over a new story and Sephiroth laughed along with it, cuddling by firelight on cold nights, discarded candy wrappers, and counting shooting stars. That wasn't for him.
Why can't he just be? Why can't people just let him exist for who he is? To see him and not something or someone else?
The signs were there. He had chosen to ignore them for so long. Whenever Ravus looked at him out of the corner of his eye or when the other man ruffled his hair...He wasn't seeing Sephiroth, but Lunafreya.
Pinpointing the exact moment he figured out what was happening seems impossible. Hearing Ravus stumble over Lunafreya's name, openly confusing memory for reality...that hurt too much to describe.
Sephiroth tries to leave, to turn away and fight his way through the shrubbery clawing at his legs because he knows he can't stop the tears now. They run hot, like little flames burning all the way down until they drip off the end of his chin.
"You miss her so bad-- you should go find her then! What the hell are you doing with me?! Just leave me alone. I don't need you. I don't need anybody."
It was a mistake, he knows. But his attempt at explaining his error is cut short, by three words that manage to wound him deeper than any sword or stray bullet.
The boy doesn't mean it. He couldn't.
...did he?
"Wait, you're only going to hurt yourself-" he tries to keep his tone steady, not raising volume or casting an edge to it, nothing that can be further misconstrued.
As much as it hurts, Sephiroth's emotions were more important to him. He wanted- No, needed to set this right.
"I misspoke. You've seen me get confused before- Disassociate from the present. That's all it was."
Perhaps a weak excuse, but there was truth to it.
Of course he missed her. How couldn't he? How could he ever disrespect or think ill of Lunafreya after what he did.
"She's... dead, Seph. And I've known, for a long time, that she's never coming back. No one could ever replace the void left in my heart that she once occupied. The same way that no one could ever replace you."
How could he describe it in words that didn't sound paltry in comparison to what he felt? If he couldn't retain his pride, he could at least retain what little humanity he had left. Maybe it was too late for even that.
"All I had to ground me for years was revenge. They tell you sometimes it's better to just forget- How could I forget? How could I forgive? To me, forgiveness was something that could only be given by those who still had something to begin with. You know that when it gets tough like that, it's going to turn ugly. I thought that I didn't care how low I sunk, how far gone I'd be, but it's different now. Everything's different. I hated it at first, but fuck it- I've been working for a long time and I haven't done much with the earnings. You want to leave? You want to disappear, we can do that. You wanted to go to Costa del Sol? Hell, we'll do that too- Buy a bed with feathers stuffed into it and everything, no keeping our backs to the wall, no sleeping with one eye open anymore. Just those fruity drinks with stupid, tiny umbrellas and miles of nothing but ocean."
They'd done enough killing, it was time to start living.

As fast as the sharp sound coupled with a throb bashed into his skull and sent him to the ground - it went just as quickly. Cloud is left staring at the ground with eyes blinking slow, taking in the marble one floor and the cool air of the AC within the building. What’d just happened..? Maybe just an effect from the mako that ran through his blood - side effects of the SOLDIER program was still on-going and the severity of withdraws. They effected everyone differently.
“No. I’m fine.” Cloud says, shaking his head and pulling himself up.
He didn’t feel fine.. but there wasn’t anything to do about it than push it down.
Ravus wasn’t quite sure how to handle this kind of situation, he wasn’t exactly known for his warmth nor concern for his fellow man. Seeing the blonde go down so suddenly did noticeably distress the High Commander, who was awkwardly caught between wanting to kneel and help Cloud to his feet and giving the SOLDIER some breathing room.
He opted to give the kid space, hovering wouldn’t be useful to either of them.
There was some truth to Magitek advancement, the branch had been created specifically to prevent these kinds of issues within Shinra’s military. In exchange for their humanity, they became more streamlined as a unit- Akin to a pack of wolves hunting down their prey. Many becoming one.
Mental illnesses and chemical imbalances were puzzles solved by dosing up on nootropics, physical ailments carefully and closely monitored by their technicians. While nanomachines could administer signals to the body to affect white blood cell or platelet production, they could not administer curatives such as potions or ‘magical’ healing without the use of said items and materia.
“Does this kind of thing happen often? Might be a hassle to report in about it officially, but you could catch something serious before it really starts to become a major problem.”
