the fact is that the john wick movies are at least a little camp and you simply cannot take them fully seriously if you want to get the most out of them. yes the dialogue can be ridiculously broody and dramatic. the plot is just a convoluted means to wrangle fight scene after fight scene into place. this entire setting is fucking absurd. and it's great!! who cares!!! you don't watch john wick for award-winning scriptwriting, you watch the films to see keanu reeves kill people for 2+ hours in a visual feast of stunt choreography and lighting. also there's genuinely hilarious dark comedy moments, and they Make some scenes at times. try to take john wick as a wholly gritty dark straight-faced action franchise and you will end up disappointed and also have no fun. if you ever find yourself doing so, please check yourself and remember that the catalyst for all these movies is john getting revenge for people shooting his dog. and the correct reaction to this is that he's entirely right. thank you and have a good night

This might be unpopular but I’m not going to use simpler vocabulary in my writing if it’s out of character for the narrator. If my POV character is a botanist, he’s going to call a plant by its name. If you don’t know what it is you can either Google it or move on just knowing it’s a plant of some sort.

I don’t like this trend of readers being angry that not everything is 100% understandable for them. I want my characters to be believable as people and sometimes people use words people outside of their field will not understand. That’s not a bad thing.

You don’t have to understand every word to get the gist of what’s happening. I’m not going to slow down an action scene to describe every weapon because someone might not know them by name. They can just assume it’s a weapon because that makes sense in the context of the scene.

I’m noticing an increase in new fic writers on AO3 who…uh…mayy not know how to format their fics correctly..so here is a quick and VERY important tip

Using a random fic of mine as example..

The left example: ✅✅✅

The right example: ❌❌❌

Idk how many times I’ve read a good fic summary and been so excited to read before clicking on it and being met with an ugly wall of text. When I see a huge text brick with zero full line breaks my eyes blur and I just siiiigh bc either I click out immediately or I grin and bear it…it’s insufferable!

If a new character speaks, you need a line break. If you notice a paragraph is becoming too large, go ahead and make a line break and/or maybe reconfigure the paragraph to flow better. I’m not a pro writer or even a huge fic writer but…please…ty…

I am not losing novel length yaoi epics because some of you don't know how to act in fannish spaces and yes I do blame the booktokification of fanfic but I also blame those of you that treat fandom like content to consume and not a community to engage with.
