Getting Jean's perspective of Neil has casually reminded me that Neil really was out here in tfc acting like Andrew was insane for thinking he was a mole for the Ravens.

Like the man was so offended that Andrew would assume that, even though he spent every moment before that being completely fucking feral, having a literal shrine to Kevin and Riko in his bag at all times along with $250,000 in what amounts to cash, knew french well enough to not only yell at Kevin with no context, but say something that got Kevin to throw him against a wall in retaliation....

This is the man who had the audacity to act like Andrew's assumption that he was hired by the Moriyamas was completely unreasonable.

Kevin and Jean’s love for each other is just SO. Kevin’s postcards and magnets to Jean; his learning French for him; the promise he made Jean make to him; his sending him to his favorite team, the team he knew was the kindest.

His inability to express it is also so heartbreaking to me. Like Jean said himself that they just couldn’t talk but he also said that “the best Kevin could manage was bottomless guilt.” And Jean saying that he once would’ve done anything for Kevin and, even worse, that Kevin knew just that and that’s how he managed to escape Evermore.

A lot of Kevin’s actions can be construed as selfish. He used French at Jean’s expense to try and get Riko to stop hitting him, he left Evermore without Jean, he let Neil keep playing for the Foxes despite knowing that it could cost him his life because he wanted to win, he didn’t tell Wymack he was his father until he absolutely had to.

Jean at his core is a giving person, conditioned to not know when to stop. He takes whatever happens to him and is convinced he deserves it, no matter what. He does what people tell him to do. He protects Riko even when he’s dead. He still loves the Ravens. He saved Zane’s life, Zane who betrayed him so thoroughly and deeply, without a moment’s hesitation or even thought. At age 14 and probably for years before, he protected and parented Elodie. He would do anything for Neil. He would STILL do anything for Kevin.

seeing how mostly normal, mostly well adjusted people react to the reality of the aftg universe is just such a goddamn gift

like the foxes truly just rolled with the punches. blood pouring out of Neil’s locker? sure. Neil actually has auburn hair and blue eyes? welp. what are you gonna do. still hot. Kevin has mafia ties? I guess that’s fine, he can stay. trying to fight the literal fbi to get your friend back? all in a normal day.

then we finally get to see from the Trojans some absolute GEMS.

“literally the most awkward way you could’ve worded it” at the way kevin says things as facts but really just sound like weird dialogue out of a b-movie thriller sometimes

Jean’s teammates being absolutely outwardly thrown by the scars on his body, screaming “what the fuck”

The “you know that’s not okay, or normal right”s

I love seeing the new perspective on the universe we’ve accepted as truth in these books

We live with the foxes for three books and they have all been so beaten down and lived in dark worlds that they’ve all learned to roll with the punches and punch back. Learning the new layer of how fucked up the world can be isn’t shocking to them, just an adjustment

The Trojans are gonna ask why you need to throw that punch or tell you that you shouldn’t have to take a punch either. And it’s not really a cult, right? No one could turn these kids into monsters for a sport, could they? I can only imagine what’s going to happen when they learn that jean was literally sold to a separate mafia family to pay off his own mafia family’s debts. that he was given to Riko like a pet.

The foxes have always watched the shadows across the room and waited for the ways they’ll change shape.

The Trojans are learning that the monsters under the bed are real and closer than they ever thought

Just thinking about how Jean Moreau is one of the best backliners in Class I exy but I don’t think anyone has even seen his peek potential yet

Just thinking about how Neil is able to match Riko at every turn with his speed at the Final Raven v Foxes match and he catches Riko by surprise since Riko is not expecting Neil in top form as when Neil was at the nest he only got on the court after being beat and his physical condition only got worse as the weeks progressed.

So just thinking that about how Jean has never played an Exy game not in pain. He is one of the best even while always playing in pain somewhere on his body. So I can’t wait to see Jean realize what he can do when he finally gets to play when he’s not in pain.

And for everyone to realize that they’ve seen Jean Moreau play but they haven’t seen Jean Moreau play

Of course Neil Josten, who understood Andrew's way of thinking and operating on promises and games quicker than anyone else, was able to wholly understand Jean's coping mechanisms to find a loophole that allowed him to live. This is the Neil who had to think fast every time he wanted truth out of Andrew because the other would never answer to or accept smalltalk. Neil knows what he's doing and he is so good at following the rules of those he cares about for their benefit
