wesdavis:
“well, now, there’s your first mistake - never put cans in a paper bag, they’ll tear right through,” weston spoke up, head cocking to the side just a touch as he watched the sight in front of him. “also, walking anywhere.” the most he did was walk down the street to grab lunch, and that was mostly because he could see the fronts of the restaurants on roswell’s main street from the front door to his practice. walking was not something he did a great deal of, at least not here in the desert - he might have grown up in the south, lived in vegas for a while, but the heat was not his friend. “uh- you alright?”
“ I was trying to save the planet or whatever ,” he joked, referring to the now torn paper bag. Even though the air was dry, especially in the summers, Callum preferred walking. It was the most exercise he got, not being an avid gym goer, so the fifteen minute stride to the store usually wasn’t such a hassle. “ I think I got it , yeah .”

mattie really should’ve been looking where she was going but yet again, her clumsiness got the better of her. the disgruntled stranger had wandered off, leaving mattie to pick up everything by herself when she heard a voice, she looked up to see her brother, “yes please”. mattie feigns a pout, “we can make room, can’t we? do we really need those carrots, they can go” she’s teasing him of course.
Callum stooped over, picking up the variety of sweets his sister had chosen. “ If you think either of us would eat carrots as a snack , you ’ re sadly mistaken ,” he joked. Looking down at the selection, he rolled his eyes and let out a whining groan. “ You didn ’ t get me any Twizzlers ?”

dilan could never contain the smile on her face at the male’s antics, finding his agitation very adorable. the two had been in each other’s lives for almost two years now but it still felt as if they were getting used to the other’s presence, learning how to be around each other as well as be parents together. still, she wouldn’t want it any other way. she’d always have love in her heart for him, even if their relationship had only been short-lived. “oh, is that true?” the tone in dilan’s voice is of teasing as she smirks, slightly bending down to collect two cans of soup from the ground. “that’s very nice to know.” hands extend the food in his direction, still smiling to herself. “want help getting’ those to your place? i’ve got time.”
Callum furrowed his brows sarcastically. “ You think I would ever deny you ?” He wondered aloud. He was never one to withhold anything from anyone, but the mother of his child? Come off it. They both knew he would do damned near anything for Dilan, just as he would for Ophelia. Hell, he would do more than he ever could for his baby girl. “ I ’ m guessing Fi is at day care ?” While they didn’t always share intimate details with each other, Callum knew if his daughter was with Dilan, she was glued to her hip or being taken care of at her favorite place. “ Yeah , actually I have a belated mother ’ s day gift for you . I thought I put your address on it , but I guess I put mine . I was going to bring it by later , but if you have time , I can pass it off now .”

it was a series of unfortunate events all rolling out in front of her, and for once wylie was left to watch in horror rather than experience it herself. a can of soup had rolled in her direction, bouncing clumsily off her foot before she stooped down to grab it, free hand reaching out just in time to keep another from rolling into the streets. “one of those days, huh?” the words were meant in jest, but the sympathetic look on her face said otherwise. “do you need me to hold the bag so you don’t have to stick it on the dusty sidewalk? i’ve been told i’m really good at holding things for people.”
“ It ’ s always one of those days when you ’ re as clumsy as I am ,” he laughed, jogging a few steps to reach his fallen can. He looked around and shrugged, “ It ’ s all in packaging anyway ,” he offered, waving it off as something that can remain on the ground. “ But I feel like I owe you a coffee or something for saving my dinner ,” he added, throwing his can a bit too hard into the torn paper bag.

jadenlapointe:
being a stay-at-home father drove jaden to stir-craziness every now and again . luckily for him his pit bull — a sandy colored service dog named ‘ buffy ‘ — forced him outside for at least once a day , and so he had ventured into mid-morning heat with his newborn daughter strapped to his chest for a hint of fresh air . tugged along by his eager pet they were set to overtake the oldest laurent , stopped only by the tension of buffy’s leash as she set into action to stop the soup from rolling away completely . “ good girl , buffs . good girl , “ jj praised , replacing her obedient paw with his foot , “ i can’t bend down , dude — baby on board — but i’ll keep the soup warm for you , “
Callum appreciated the kindness from Jaden. The pair hadn’t spoken often, but enough to know of each other and stop a rolling can of soup when necessary. “ And how is the baby doing ?” He asked. bending down to retrieve his fallen item. He didn’t want to pinch the kid’s cheeks, but he sure did love babies. “ Hi ,” he cooed, hoping for a smile of sorts from the newborn.

Holly had been tailing not far behind Callum, one of their dogs in tow, when the incident happened. They quickly stooped up pick up one of the cans rolling towards them, a slightly bemused smile crossing their features. “You struggling there, Cal?” they questioned, quickening their step to catch up with him. “You need a hand?”
Callum shook his head, a smile on his face as he saw the familiar Holly Berne. “ You ’ re always here when I need you ,” he said, stumbling to retrieve his fallen food items. “ How you been , Hol ?” Although the pair weren’t necessarily close, he always ha da soft spot for them. They were always kind to him and he never saw a reason to not return to favor.

“i mean, i’m pretty hopeless, too, but i’m fairly sure i’ve got pepper spray tucked away somewhere around here … ” probably lost somewhere underneath the seats, which seemed to become a black hole of sorts when it came to missing items, “ — or we can just chuck a couple of your soup cans at ‘em? they’re sturdy enough to be a distraction for us.” smiling cheeks slowly warm as he speaks of his sister, though she places a hand over her chest with utmost ( and futile ) seriousness, “cross my heart, i promise your sister won’t hear a word about this. scout’s honor.” she brings a finger to her lips, before breaking into soft chuckles once more, cheeks burning red as she has to confirm the inevitable. “unfortunately, yes — my name is literally april may. my parents thought they were hilarious, but hey, if i’m not telling your sister about what you said, you’ve gotta promise you won’t tell anyone about my name, okay?” she holds out her pinkie, she means business. “more than promise, you’ve gotta pinky swear it.” cheeks thoroughly reddened, she starts up the car that slowly chugs to life and dutifully blasts them with air conditioning. “can’t be any worse than the sounds she’s heard me make, but don’t worry, she’s been passed through numerous owners so i think she’s heard way, way worse.” besides, april always appreciated goofier singing, though that might’ve been her own wounded ego. “where are you headed? i’ll do my best to get us there without excessive yodeling … okay, like, ninety-percent promise.”
“ Don ’ t go searching for it !” He nearly yelled. Instantly, Callum squeezed his eyes shut, knowing how bad that probably sounded. “ One time I was digging around for something in my sister ’ s car and found the pepper spray , but I didn ’ t know what it was so when I grabbed it , I accidentally sprayed it and I couldn ’ t see for like two hours .” He laughed, remembering how swollen his eyes were following the incident. “ I ’ m just a little traumatized by it , if you can’t tell . Plus , the soup can idea is way better .” Hoping he didn’t scare her too badly, Callum laughed to ease any tension from his sudden outburst over pepper spray. His joke about her name was actually her reality and he could not believe his ears. “ Say you ’ re joking ,” he insisted. Without missing a beat, he let out a soft chuckle before adding “ I do have a friend named Cherry Blossom , actually . And her sister is named River Blue . Naming kids can ’ t be that hard , can it ?” The man laughed and stuck out his little finger for their pinky swears to keep the other’s secrets. “ I ’ m actually just up in Aurora , if you know where that is ?”

was she crazy? april can’t bite back the involuntary grin that sweeps across her face as she considers the notion, “i don’t know, chief, the jury’s still out on that one. glad to know you’re a safe bet, though.” soft laughter breaks through, wrinkling her nose at him, “you know, i don’t feel like enough people tell me that i remind them of their dumb sister, so … thank you, i’m honored. i bet your sister’s actually way cooler than me, though.” most people were, so that’s low hanging fruit. she extends her hand to shake his, “it’s nice to meet you, callum, i’m april. i feel like it would’ve been much more fateful to meet me one month ago.” oddly enough, april was always her least favorite month — she opens the passenger door for him, allowing callum to shuffle in any of his groceries. “oh, and just so we’re all acquainted, this is janis,” she adds as she slides into the driver’s seat, lightly tapping the dashboard of her beloved vehicle “and she’s very old, so we gotta be extra sweet to her. the big question here is: do you enjoy singing in the car, callum?”
Callum shrugged. “ I hate to say it , but I ’ m harmless so I hope no one tries to rob us later . In that case , we ’ re screwed ,” he joked. As much as Callum wants to be a bad guy or intimidating, he knows in his heart he would only bust out his MMA skills if absolutely necessary. Although the martial arts was useful, he didn’t find much need for it anymore, and for that he was thankful. In any case, he would much rather have his hobby remain as such and not be something he ever needed to use. “ Yeah ... Actually , if you ever meet a little girl about yay big --” he began, displaying is sister’s height on his body, only barely reaching the bottom of his shoulder. “ Named Matilda -- Mattie -- Don ’ t tell her I called her dumb . My ass is grass if you rat on me .” He couldn’t help but smile at her comment on her name. “ Please tell me your middle name is May .” Callum patted the car’s dash just as she had, his touch more soft, hoping not to accidentally break anything. “ Hello , Janis . I will be sure to treat you real nice , ma ’ am . Although , yes , I do love singing in the car , so she may hate the tone deaf sounds I make .”

apart from the obvious stress she was under since buying the store, being her own boss and making her own work schedule had been making her life easier. dilan could actually breathe knowing she had people hired to take care of feel good when she wasn’t around, meaning that she didn’t exactly need to be the first one to get there anymore and run around like a lunatic while trying to get everything in order for the costumers—believe it or not, she was finally getting the hang of things. still, she liked to be there early-ish for whatever it was needed of her. making her way towards her car, keys spinning around between her fingers, her eyes move at the sight nearby. her face lights up, a chuckle being contained as she watches a can roll in her direction. “mornin’ there, cal.” dilan greets him, brows raised in light amusement. “you’re in need of a hand?”
Of all people to catch him literally slipping, of course it was Dilan. “ Mornin ’,” he replied, hanging his head a bit lower than usual. “ Mornin ’ , Dil ,” he repeated. Callum was never one to get embarrassed but sometimes he still felt like he had to impress Dilan. Of course, he knew that wasn’t true and they both had love for the other the way they were, clumsy or not, but he wondered if she ever thought his behaviour was childish. Oh well he thought. “ I ’ ll never say no to you ,” he answered, instantly realizing he should have said anything other than that. “ I mean ... I ... No , I mean that , I ’ ll never say no to you .”

ohaprils:
it’s one of those rare days when april’s absolved of responsibility, and the sky has that peculiar vibrancy to it that compels her to get off that beloved frumpy couch at home and take a drive through the town — she actively insists that one of the cheapest highs available is blasting music and full AC on a hot day. she’s hollering along with dolly parton at a red light when she spots a broad figure having a little trouble with their groceries, and upon glancing at the local temperature on her car’s dashboard, realizes she can’t just leave the guy stuck there. she pulls up slowly in her old volkswagen, inherited from her grandfather and surely seen better days, parking beside him. “hey, you okay?” lithe figure is already slipping out of the car to snag his wayward soup cans, snagging what she can as she steps closer. “i hate when that happens, these bags never have any proper hold to them,” she pouts slightly, then swivels her gaze over to the vacant passenger seat. “it’s pretty warm out here today, can i give you a lift home? or wherever you need to be? and before you say no, you should consider the fact that you look like you’re about to faint.” she smiles faintly, pulling open the passenger door, “it’s really not any trouble.”
Hearing an unfamiliar voice, Callum turned in the direction of where it was coming from. “ Woah ,” he somewhat whispered. He was never a car guy, but the vintage look was one he could definitely appreciate. Taking a few steps closer, he leaned his head by the rolled down window, careful not to be intrusive. “ I ’ m sure you have more important things to do than ... Actually , I would appreciate a ride , absolutely , however , are you crazy ?” He asked with a laugh. “ I ’ m safe as safe could be but damn do you remind me of my dumb sister , offering some stranger a ride ,” he explained with a laugh. He shook his head trying not to scare the poor woman who was only being generous. “ I ’ m Callum , now we ’ re not strangers and I can accept your offer with a clear conscious .”

LOCATION: COSMIC CANDY
mattie was wandering down one of the aisles of cosmic candy, her arms full of sweets, she’d decided to treat herself. she was in her own little world, looking at all the treats on the shelves, when she bumps into someone. sweets go everywhere, she bends down to start picking them up, “sorry! i should’ve gotten a basket”.
Callum laughed as his sister ran into a stranger at the top of the aisle. They were definitely siblings, based on their clumsiness alone. Rolling his eyes playfully, he made his way over to Matilda’s rescue... Again. “ Need a hand , kid ?” He asked, watching her gather up all of her goodies. “ Gahhhd damn , Tilly , we don ’ t have enough pantry space for all them !”

The corners of her smile twitched up, showing her appreciation for his humor. It would’ve been awkward if he took the situation too seriously. “Chef Boyardee is quaking as we speak.” Her brown eyes drew to his hand only to flash back to the soups in her arms. It was agile in a weird sort of grace, the shaking of one of the cans being the only tell that she was a klutz, herself. The young woman shook his hand with confidence. “Zephyr. Some call me Zeph, though - so, whatever floats your boat.” Her shoulders shrugged, making the hot pink in her hair glint more neon with the sun’s rays as she took her hand back and allowed the soup cans to settle back in a comfortable position.
“So you’re not some off-brand Walmart version of the Joker, trying to take over Roswell with soup cans?” Her brown piqued, showing the woman put some thought into it even if her tone was jocular. “And here I was, about to ask about your road to villainy…” Zeph’s head shook to herself in a teasing tsk. “Do you live far? I think juggling these with those bags seems an awful task for just one person.” She hinted at helping, without a prompt.
“ Progresso has been calling , they want to know your going rate ,” he added, enjoying the soup banter, no matter how ridiculous it seemed. After shaking her hand, Callum realized how unstable the cans were. “ Let me get those , sorry about that .” He quickly reached for the food items and then found himself cradling the full aluminum, remembering the paper bag with a giant hole in the bottom. “ Well , what do you prefer ?” Cal never wanted to get a name wrong and sometime people offered nicknames when their preference was the longer version. “ I feel like this is definitely more of a Deadpool move than the Joker . Too simple for someone so clever ,” he rebutted. “ Although , maybe my plan doesn ’ t even involve the cans and its all an illusion to divert you from my bigger plan ,” he added, chuckling softly to himself. He shook his head, not wanting to bother the woman any more than he already has. “ No , not far at all , I think I can manage ,” he lied.

“now this is just me spoutin’ random ass thoughts out loud but,” jett starts, taking a small pause to analyze strands of their bleached hair in between their fingers. “but d’ya think i should shave my head again? i’ve been thinkin’ about it. i don’t wanna, like, go through the awful growin’ phase again but… a shaved head for the summer doesn’t sound like a good idea to you, too?”
Callum could feel his arms getting itchy as the grass waved nearby, brushing past every hair on his skin. “ Why the fuck not ?” He suggested, shrugging. Both of their heads were next to each other, cloud gazing from a random park the pair had stumbled across. “ I say yes but if you don ’ t then my opinion was always no . But I do want your consent to pet your head like a Chia pet if you do it ,” he laughed. “ It ’ ll be so prickly though . I know my head got uncomfortable sometimes when I did it .”

It was cartoon-esque how the young woman stepped on a rolling can, being thrown off balance enough to pull her attention off the blue light in her hand. Luckily, she didn’t fall, her free hand gripping the nearby traffic signal pole. Discarding her phone into her pocket, she leant over to pick up the can. Finding it curious that there was a stray soup can, she then watched as others made their way over to her. Zephyr laughed to herself as she began picking up the soup cans, looking around for who possibly could be pulling such an obscure prank.
The sight of the male up ahead made the dots connect in her brain, the smaller of the two jogging up to him, “I guess I can add ‘soup wrangler’ to my résumé.” Her smile radiant, overly warm in a hyperactive yet friendly demeanor. “I’m Zephyr - I don’t think I’ve seen you around before?” Her tone a ‘correct me if I’m wrong’ in deliverance.
Jogging over to where his groceries fell, Callum was grateful to see someone to his rescue. “ It ’ s a marketable skill ,” he joked, appreciating her assistance, even if his rouge cans did nearly kill her. “ Callum ,” he said, outstretching his arm for a handshake. Do people do that anymore? he wondered, suddenly feeling a bit silly for offering. “ I kind of keep to myself . And Roswell isn ’ t that small of a town ,” he chuckled. Most of Cal’s days were spent either sketching in bed, tattooing at Black Box, or running around town, not usually causing as much havoc as now.

Shae poured a drink, sighing to herself as she did. “What? Sorry, I wasn’t paying attention.” Giving a weak smile, sliding the drink towards the person. “The guy at the end of the bar keeps smiling at me like he recognizes me.” Shae leaned forward, and gave the guy a wink. “I didn’t think he would remember buying me drinks all night last weekend.” Turning her back cleaning up the bar behind her.
Callum laughed, noticing the man she was referring to, and returned is attention to his favorite drink. “ I said you make a mean Shirley Temple ,” he joked. “ Plenty of grenadine .” The former addict tried to stay away from alcohol on weekdays if he could, but sometime he had to slip up. If he knew anything, though, he knew a good old fashioned Shirley Temple never disappointed, especially ones from Planet 7. It’s as if the bartenders knew the perfect mix of syrup and Sprite.

Sitting in a booth alone, sipping his coffee slowly as he read the paper. “Hm..” He flipped the page again, and took a fry from his plate and brought it to his lips. “Look at that, another piece about something I don’t want to read about. How disappointing.” There was sass crawling through his words before he folded up the paper and out it down. “My apologies, every time I read I can’t seem to keep it in my head.”
Callum sat in his favorite coffee spot, nursing a nearly empty black cup of coffee. Hearing someone rave about whatever it was in the paper, the man tried to sneak a glance at the headline, unable to read it from so far away. Shit, maybe I do need glasses he thought. Noticing the other speak to him, Cal shook his head with a grin. “ Not a problem . What ’ s got you so worked up about it , anyway ?”
