Her inquiry is only natural- what HAD he been doing in Mustang’s office? He’d assumed no one would be around to catch him, hadn’t counted on another esteemed alchemist to poke her head in this late. 
             Of course a “Nothing, really” wouldn’t satisfy the lady, only stoking her curiosity brighter. In fact, Qistina appears to have zero intention of letting him off the hook, pinning him to his spot with her gaze. He swallows thickly, and tries to act as natural as possible; hands hanging loosely from his pockets, one shoves the screwdriver it hides deeper into the fabric. ]
     ❝ Oh, uh, y’know. Just dropping off some late work. I think the colonel         clocked out already, though. ❞

             [ Oh, geez- was that a wrong move? Falman had assured the sergeant that joining pub night was fine during his northern stay. Hell, the guy’d even brought along his chess set for them to catch up over ( Falman’s set becoming an expectation by his coworkers ). It wasn’t until the general had arrived, seated herself among them, and usurped her lieutenant’s match entirely that Kain had truly started to sweat.
            And as he steals her pawn, her threat quickly reminds the man just who’s in charge, here. Still, gaze flickering towards his friend, Falman gives away no indication that this was a bad idea: letting General Armstrong win might even be worse. Ah, crap-- ! What’s Kain supposed to do?! ]

               [ It takes a few shaky breaths, but Kain regains his composure. Good thing, too- he never WANTs anyone seeing such a lapse in control. Even after all this time- months since the Promised Day, longer still since his deployment- the crash of a falling crate outside was enough to send his pulse skyrocketing. Sounds of men shouting and bustling around their mishap, and without realizing, Kain had leapt from his chair on instinct. Following an embarrassing beat, the man seats himself once more, face going warm. No one had warned him about the residual mortars in his ribs...
                Luckily, it was only two in the office- himself and the lieutenant. But even so, Kain pushes a hand under his glasses to squeeze the bridge of his nose, hide his shame. It’s her voice, though, that snaps him to, again. He’s still getting used to Hawkeye’s quieter, gentler tones. ]
    ❝ Thank you, sir. ❞
               [ he breathes, sitting back in his seat. And though he tries to get back to work, really wants to shake it off again, the sergeant stares dazedly down at his pen. ]
    ❝ ... Everything sounds so quiet, these days, but then some things        explode in my ears... d’you know what I mean? ❞

[ DISTRACT ]:          sender, noticing receiver’s distress, provides a distraction for them (by conversation, a mobile game, a detour, etc.).
[ ARRIVE ]:          sender shows up at the receiver’s door after receiving a troubled phone call from the receiver.
[ CIRCLE ]:          sender rubs slow circles on the receiver’s back while hugging them in an effort to calm them down.

[ JACKET ]:          sender notices the receiver beginning to shake after an immensely distressing incident, and removes their own jacket to wrap it around the receiver’s shoulders.
[ CATCH ]:          sender, noticing the receiver’s legs beginning to give out beneath them, rushes over to them and catches them before they collapse to the ground.
