Mary Reno (15)
UNITED STATES—The boy was frantic.
“Help me pick up all the money before the boss gets here… And then get out. You can’t be here.”
His youth and inexperience did not make him the most logical of victims. Mary pitched in, like the good soul she was. It seemed like the first time in three years any non-street person had told her anything other then thinly veiled versions of, “Get out… you shouldn’t exist.”
At one point they butted heads as Mary leaned down for a crinkly dollar and then stretched for a stray nickel. At precisely the same moment the boy lunged for a five-dollar bill. He beheld the opulence beyond the grime and stench.
Alas, what is desired is not always appetizing. The animal can rise up an overtake the man at any time, and it could overtake the boy who was not yet a man. This was especially true in the case of the boy who had been rudely interrupted in the back room in the midst of his own lewd private games to bide the time in this customer-less cafe that was somebody’s tax write-off.
There in Mary’s deshabile, the boy was seeing a bit more of a live woman than he had ever seen. The sweat from his last postponed adventure in self-pleasure was coolly refreshing as it dried into a film. After some murmured sweet nothings, his pale olive hands squeezed and caressed. He was living proof that there was no better aphrodesiac than a well-hated job.
The boy was seeing a goddess. He was not seeing or smelling what an ordinary bystander would have seen. Sirens passed by in a flock, outdoors. It was a sensory event completely removed from what was going on in the empty shop.
For Mary the touch was medicine; it was narcotic. Like a field of anemones, each cell craved in unison, “Go there… let it happen.” He sank his face into her overripe breasts. Mary was rolling down a hill under a blanket of blue sky, luminously on the edge of blackness. She floated as on wheels faster and faster and was afraid to collide with giant boulders on the side of the incline. As the angle of the drop became steeper and steeper, crashing into one of the boulders was unavoidable.
Prey to desire, the boy did not take the precaution of locking the door. Somebody could walk in at any moment. And if they did, they would immediately detect the swampy atmosphere that invaded the atmosphere.
The sense of risk and danger made this moment all the more exciting.
Now, in fact, the old man in a white shirt walked into the store. This was the guy who always had a bagel and a cup of black coffee with a single sugar packet. The customer thrust his hands into his pockets, and still made a show of going over the menu, as he always did invariably before coming up with the same order.
Taking one step forward and one step backward. Speaking at last, “Xander, I’ll have a toasted bagel and a small coffee with one sugar.”
“Coming right up, Charlie,” the boy said.
The boy shivered and almost giggled with shame. His face went hot with shame. Below the counter and out of sight Mary’s hands and tongue were doing things. Miraculously, the configuration of the store allowed the boy the comfort of filling the order without having to step away from his post. The bell tinkled, and Charlie left with a parting comment:
“Xander, you look like you’ve been to the beach.”
“As a matter of fact… I, uh… went hiking yesterday.”
“You should wear sunscreen.”
“I’ll remember that, sir. Yes sir. Thank you sir.”
At last the old man was gone and the boy sighed relief.
To be continued…

American Airlines Attendant Assaulted
UNITED STATED—On Wednesday, October 27, American Airlines flight 976 on Airbus 321 departing from John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) in New York en route to John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Santa Ana, California was diverted after a flight attendant was assaulted by a passenger.
A passenger reportedly punched the flight attendant, breaking her nose which caused blood to spew outside her mask. The pilot then made an emergency landing in Denver, Colorado to have the passenger removed from the plane, and the flight attendant taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Disgruntled American Air Lines Passenger
Multiple news reports indicate the attendant had multiple broken bones. One of the passengers, Mackenzie Rose, told CBS reporters that she understood that the attendant was actually punched in the nose twice. Social media posts from other passengers indicated that the disturbance delayed the flight by an hour.
The passenger had to have his hands duct-taped together until he was picked up at the Denver airport by police.
Dallas Parker, the CEO, and spokesman for American Airlines, based out of Fort Worth, Texas made the following statements to reporters:
“We are outraged by the reports of what took place on board. Acts of violence against our team members are not tolerated by American Airlines. We are working with law enforcement to support our team-member and pursue prosecution, and the individual involved in this incident will not be allowed to travel with us in the future.”
First reports indicated that the altercation began over the passenger’s refusal to wear a mask. No arrests have been made. The case has been turned over to the FBI for further investigation.

Comedian Chris D'Elia Surprises Audience At Hollywood Laugh Factory
WEST HOLLYWOOD — On Friday October 29, comedian and actor, Chris D’Elia made a surprise performance at the Hollywood Laugh Factory after several months of his disappearance from stand-up comedy.
He was not listed as a comedian for the show although prior to June 2020, he was consistently listed as the headliner at comedy clubs around Los Angeles including The Laugh Factory, The World Famous Comedy Store and The Hollywood Improv. His opener, Michael Lenoci who was dressed in a hot dog costume hosted the show and announced that D’Elia was taking the stage. Upon his announcement the audience was ecstatic about his surprise appearance. They cheered and applauded as D’Elia started his bit about his recent “cancelation” after dozens of sexual misconduct allegations against him were exposed in 2020.
On June 16, 2020 D’Elia was trending on Twitter after multiple women tweeted their screenshots of alleged conversations with D’Elia that included messages from the comedian asking the girls if they “want to make out” or “want to meet up after the show.” Shortly following that night, he was confronted by TMZ, when he confirmed that “all of his relationships have been both legal and consensual” and added that he was “very sorry.”
Following the allegations, reports show that he split with CAA, was replaced on the TV series Army of the Dead by actor, Tig Notaro using green screen and even neglected by friends which he admitted on his podcast, Congratulations.
In February, D’Elia posted a Youtube video and double-downed on his statement that all of his relations have been consensual and legal and although he wanted to speak up at the time, he figured it was better to “spend time with family” and “take a long hard look at himself.”
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that D’Elia made a surprise performance August 21 at the Laugh Factory after over a year of his absence. It was reported that “the crowd had a positive response.”
An audience member told Canyon News that she was “happy to see Chris” and when she was asked why he keeps surprising the audience as opposed to announcing his shows, she said, “I think he wants a fair shot at coming back and if he announced it, a lot of his fans would show up but a lot of his haters would too. A non-bias audience is perfect for him right now.”
Another audience member told Canyon News that he spent a lot of time “self-deprecating telling jokes about his time in therapy and his anger issues.” She added, “It was hilarious.”
Since D’Elia’s Youtube video in February, he is back to hosting his podcast, making Youtube videos featuring his family and active on Instagram where he has 1.9 million followers.

Christmas Shopping A Little Early
UNITED STATES—We’re being told to start Christmas shopping a bit earlier this year because of rising prices as a result of inflation and the possible shortage of goods. Well, let me tell you America, I normally do begin my Christmas shopping around August each year, but this year I started a bit later, like in the last week or so. It just hadn’t been on my mind and then suddenly, you keep hearing this panic and it almost puts you in a panic.
I had to stop and think, is there really a shortage on goods? I mean the few retailers that I have visited I have NOT seen any shortage of goods, if anything I was surprised to see HOW stocked with goods they were. Especially toys and that is a good thing for me considering my nieces are at that perfect age where it’s actually fun to purchase toys for them. I actually got great deals on all the items that I purchased, but it did force me to question, is this a terrific marketing tactic to get consumers to spend money on goods?
The answer to that question is YES! I was actually stunned how busy one of the local malls I visited the past weekend was. I was under the impression that something crazy was going on because I couldn’t understand why it was so busy so early in the day. It was either the fact that everyone had money (I did forget about that Child Credit payment that was being issued to a lot of taxpayers) or there was a massive sale going on that I had no clue about.
Long story short, people were spending money and the icing on the cake was the fact that plenty of the retailers I visited actually had some strong sales. When I say that I mean it! Anytime you can get a perfume or cologne set that normally clocks in at $100, and it’s on sale for $25 that is a steal. A $70 hoodie for only $20? Sign me up America. I use to be a big proponent of waiting to do my Xmas shopping until Black Friday. If you don’t know what that day is it is right after Thanksgiving and its considered the biggest shopping day of the year, where many retailers in the red would go into the black (they’d make massive profits people).
For me, it is tradition in our family, we’d eat, we’d sleep a little then we’d shop all day. Yeah, exhausting and busy holiday weekend to say the least America. With that said, I’m all about getting a good sale, so the more money I can save the more money I have for things later. One thing that is certain the price on goods has risen America, even if you think it hasn’t it has and I have come to the realization if I see something I like you get it while you see it.
Don’t be indecisive, don’t sit back and wait hoping for the item to go on sale at a later date. If you do, you will indeed regret it people and that’s on you. Right now clothing at some stores are offering some stellar deals, but something I never used to do I’ve started to do a lot more: shopping online. I prefer to purchase goods in stores because I want to see what I am buying. However, you get better deals online than in stores a lot of the time. The great thing transpiring is the fact that now you can purchase items online have them shipped to the store and don’t have to worry about those pesky shipping fees. Yes, it is indeed something I absolutely adore people.
The general gist is the big shopping season of the year is upon us, it doesn’t hurt to start a little early. You don’t want to be that person stressed and worried about trying to buy gifts at the last minute. That is a level of stress no one needs especially in the midst of a pandemic.

Nina Reeves Arrested On “General Hospital!”
HOLLYWOOD—I hate when characters attempt to moonlight as martyrs in the soap opera arena, I feel like I am seeing that more than ever right now on every single soap on the air right now, “The Young and the Restless,” “The Bold and the Beautiful,” “Days of Our Lives” and worst of all right now “General Hospital.” It seems like every single character on this soap loves to judge people when they do bad things, not acknowledging the misdeeds they have committed in the past.
This brings me to the tale of the hour of Michael Corinthos having Nina Reeves arrested for fraud and identity theft. Yeah, these charges make absolutely no sense, none whatsoever. When did Nina commit fraud, and whose identity did she steal? It looks like Michael’s power play is going to cause some serious issues in his relationship with Willow moving forward. Willow sees the worth in acknowledging what Nina did was wrong, but they’ve all done horrid things. Um, Michael do you recall that you murdered Claudia Zacchara. Yeah, you took someone’s life, even though it was self-defense, you still killed someone.
That death, just gave me a great story idea if the writers of “GH” somehow considered the return of a new face from the Zacchara clan arriving in Port Charles to seek vengeance against Michael and his family. Willow was not happy with Michael’s stunt, Carly, is ecstatic with the result, but when isn’t this woman? Carly’s current predicament is the result of her keeping that secret about Nelle being Nina’s daughter, and I don’t feel sorry for her one bit. You have to reap what you sew, and that is something Carly has never endured people, never.
She is worried about her marriage to Sonny and rightfully so. He has lingering feelings for Nina that have not been disclosed to Carly yet, even though Ava is attempting to use that to her advantage in a custody battle for Avery. Let’s talk about two more hypocrites in Ava Jerome and Nikolas Cassadine. Ava murdered Connie in cold-blood, got away with it, and then swapped the pills of Morgan Corinthos causing his bipolar disorder to spiral leading to his presumed death (we still haven’t found or seen a body people).
This is the LAST WOMAN, who should attempt to teach someone a lesson. Her hatred for her daughter Kiki sleeping with Griffin, led to her sleeping with serial killer Ryan Chamberlain, who later murdered Kiki. Yes, Ava, you trying to teach Spencer a lesson is the last thing you should be doing. If anything you should be repenting to the powers that be. Nope, she’s gloating, she is on cloud nine, and not realizing her world could come crashing down any day and I sense that is going to happen when Nikolas is exposed and the threat of Ryan Chamberlain returns in an devastating way.
Esme is playing with fire interning at that facility that Ryan is at, and something tells me there are things about Esme’s past that are about to come to light that is going to explode in epic, and I mean epic fashion people. Nikolas has every reason to spite the wicked stepmother, who helped Valentin keep his father away from him so she could regain her face back after what she did to Morgan was exposed. Spencer plans to make Ava pay, and like father like son. I cannot wait until the chickens come home to roost against Nikolas for his role in shooting Hayden Barnes and framing Shawn for it. Nikolas knows the walls are about to close in and something tells me Spencer will be the one to discover the truth and deliver the nail to his father, just as Ava attempts to manipulate Nina and Sonny aka Mike’s relationship to her advantage. Ava and Nikolas need a taste of humble pie, and I think it’s headed their way, but the outcome is going to have rippled effects on their lives they never expected.
Spencer is out of jail and working with his cousin Cameron, while living with Kevin. Austin was forced to drop his claim to the Quartermaine fortune after Brook Lynn exposed his diagnosis of Leo, much to Olivia’s dismay. Something tells me Austin is going to learn the truth about Bailey being Maxie’s daughter and all hell is about to break loose. I mean Brook Lynn is doing a bit much, getting in tiffs with the wrong people who can blow her world apart, like Gladys of all people. Gosh, I cannot stand Gladys, why is this woman still pivotal on the show. Maybe her latest blackmail stunt leads to her demise because it is long overdue at this point. Finn and Elizabeth continue to grow closer, just as rumblings seem to point to the return of Elizabeth and Hayden’s father. A man we haven’t seen in the flesh in a very, and I mean very long time people.
Another hot button narrative we need to touch on involves Valentin, Peter, Drew and Victor Cassadine. Victor confessed that Valentin is his son to Robert, Anna, Drew and Sam. Sam and Drew were surprised to come face-to-face with Britt and Jason in Greece. So what that means is the tension is thick, but if we’re being honest, Sam and Jason being kaput is the best things the writers could have done. Drew is still programmed under Peter’s spell and they kidnapped Liesl, for reasons the audience still hasn’t figured out. Peter is enjoying his villain status to full effect, which means his time is indeed short-lived on the soap.
Anna and Valentin have gotten so much closer, and Victor is manipulating as much as possible to ensure he doesn’t face any charges. This is intriguing, because Nikolas’ world is about to explode as a result of a double whammy, Victor and Valentin’s return, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Valentin wanted to deliver the kicker to Nikolas after he blew his world to bits with Nina. With November sweeps literally transpiring in a few days I think things are about to kick-off in epic fashion and I’m ready for it people.

SMPD Offers Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos Safety Tips
SANTA MONICA—The Santa Monica Police Department are offering safety tips for Halloween, Sunday, October 31 and Dia de los Muertos on Monday, November 1. The SMPD is asking everyone to have a fun and safe holiday by following these important safety tips.
Walk Safely
Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
Look left, right and left again when crossing and keep looking as you cross.
Put electronic devices down and keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.
Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
Plan Activities Wisely
Provide adult supervision at all times for the youngest of your group.
Remind older children that if not with an adult, to stay together and look out for each other.
Avoid alleys or shortcuts and stay on parent/guardian approved routes.
Attend a City sponsored event like the Police Activities League Trunk or Treat that provides a family safe activity (http://www.smpal.org/).
Keep Costumes Both Creative and Safe
Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.
Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.
Avoid costumes that include makeshift or replica weapons.
Drive Safely
Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.
Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.
Eliminate any distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
Drive slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances.
Follow State Covid Suggestions

Secrets Unravel On “Days Of Our Lives!”
HOLLYWOOD—The Devil is not messing around on “Days of Our Lives” as his plot to possess Marlena Evans is underway and things are getting dicey. Marlena has finally allowed the Devil to possess her and as a result, the only person who seems to sense something is off with Marlena is her hubby, John Black. Unfortunately for John, that spelt major trouble. I must admit it is indeed iconic to have “DOOL” to revisit this captivating storyline all these years later with special effects that are going to be way more iconic this time around than last time.
John ultimately discovered the truth about Marlena and it resulted in him being knocked out cold and being stashed in the one place that everyone seems to be hidden, the DiMera tunnels. Johnny should have heeded Allie and Chanel’s advice, but nope. His cast is in place including Abigail, Chad, EJ, Chanel and Allie and it is now resulting in utter chaos as filming is about to get underway people. This brings us to a new development involving Justin, Bonnie, Gwen and Xander’s predicament. Little does Justin and Xander realize that Victor is working behind the scenes to establish a deal with District Attorney Melinda Trask to get them released.
That deal involves the wicked villainess Kristen DiMera. That is right America, Kristen DiMera is back in Salem to cause more havoc. I mean people don’t realize the last time in Salem, Kristen did so much damage, I mean damage that has placed a ton of the chaos currently transpiring in Salem in play. If Kristen hadn’t made the move to make Sarah Horton vanish, a lot of the things Xander did, like hooking up with Chanel, sleeping with Nicole, hooking up with Gwen would have never taken place people.
Victor plans to utilize Kristen’s arrest as a way to free Justin and Xander, as for Bonnie and Gwen, he could care less. Which is why Gwen’s predicament is NOT good because Abigail knows her sister is hiding something big and her thinking cap has been activated so much to the point that she is starting to dig to find the truth. When it comes to Kristen only one person knows her whereabouts, EJ, but her decision to come back to Salem and try to see Rachel proved detrimental. Steve and Kayla’s little plan to manipulate EJ
She was spotted by Brady who turned her in to the authorities and let the theatrics play out America. I still cannot believe Nicole and EJ are giving it another go, I cannot wait till Sami returns to the foray and unleashes hell when she discovers her husband and mortal enemy are hooking up. Sami has been gone way too long, so it’s time for her to swoop in and unleash a bit of hell people. There is also the buzz about Rex’s return and a bomb that changes Xander’s world people one involving Sarah’s ‘disappearance’ on her wedding day.
That is not the end of the drama people, romance could be brewing between Kate and Roman again (I always like those two together to begin with). Not to mention Abe was shot courtesy of Jake and a tussle with the Vitali mob family. Damn, its hard to believe James Reynolds has been on the soap for 40 years people! He was celebrated in iconic fashion this week highlighting moments with his great love Lexi Carver-DiMera. Abe pulled through, but that bomb that Paulina is keeping is getting closer and closer to coming out meaning, Lani’s world, and Abe’s with certainty will explode when he learns that Lani is NOT his daughter. Oh, Paulina you are in for a reckoning.
Last, but not least, Jake and Gabi might have some leverage against Philip and Ava now that their plot to expose Jake for murder has backfired. Imagine how Rafe will feel when he learns what Ava did to his little sister. Gabi is no saint people, put she’s still Rafe’s blood, so that is going to destroy their relationship and point him in the direction of Nicole Walker who is eyeing EJ DiMera. Things are about to get messy just in time for November on “Days of Our Lives” people!

Finding A Work Balance
UNITED STATES—It is hard people, we can say all the time that it is so easy to find a work/life balance. We are told countless times we have to find a balance between work and our personal lives. However, it seems more and more our focus is all work and very little play. Why? Why is that? What can we be doing to change things a bit?
Well, we have to acknowledge that we’re more focused on our work than our personal lives. You sometimes have to acknowledge that you work too much and you have to ask why? Are you working so much for financial reasons or are you working to compensate for something else? Like a lack of a social life. It is very possible and the fact that you KNOW that you’re working so much to compensate for something else should be an alarming sign.
So if you notice the issue there is a way to fix it. Try to find a way to cut off when it comes to work. That is something I have indeed struggled with in life, but I have indeed gotten better. I mean I would go months close to a year without taking a vacation at work. I had to ask myself why? Well, there was no one to cover my shift, but in addition, it got to the point that no matter what, there was never anyone to fill in for me. So should I just keep working to the point where I fall out, get so exhausted that I’m not able to recover? Of course, not and you sometimes just have to let it be known, I NEED some time off. I need to personally consider my needs and wants over my job.
Any company that has an issue with that, especially if you’re a hard worker that should raise an eyebrow or two for you because one person shouldn’t be expected to do it all and if you are doing it all it just leads to bigger problems in in the long run. You start to have a bit of angst in the workplace and that angst could impact your work and affect those who you work with.
So take a break and when I say take a break I mean that. Take a break! Do not answer your phone if you’re on vacation, do not answer emails, do NOT fill obligated to work when you’re not scheduled to work. If you’re working while you’re on vacation are you truly on vacation America? No, no you’re not and the company you work for benefits from your work load, whereas you lose in the long run because the body doesn’t get the opportunity to fully recover as you need it to be people.
I’m starting to realize as I get older, when you find a balance between work and your personal life, you find a gem of peace and happiness. It is not just about the body getting a moment of relaxation you get a moment of self-reflection. What is important, what isn’t important and how to put focus where things matter most and taking care of other things as time allows. Life is not all about work people, it is something we need to take more seriously.

Quick Guide To Help Choose Between Salt-Free And Salt-Based Water Softener
UNITED STATES—If you reside in a locality where you get hard water for daily needs, you undoubtedly need a good water softener. Hard water can be damaging for your plumbing equipment and also for your home utensils. Moreover, some studies indicate that exposure to hard water may increase the chances of eczema. In order to keep you safe from the ill effects of hard water, water softeners are used.
The decision to buy a salt-free or salt-based water softener depends on your actual requirement. We have already covered the ill effects of hard water consumption in households. Not every one of us would face the same issues from using hard water.
If your concern is simply the damage to your appliances, then a salt-free water softener would do the job for you. However, if you face issues like skin or hair ailment or if your tap water leaves watermarks on the utensils, you must consider buying a salt-based water softener.
Many of us are still unaware of the difference between a salt-free and a salt-based water softener. Before you get lured into buying a salt-free water softener for your home, make sure to read this quick write-up for a detailed understanding of how each of these type function.
The Functioning of Salt-Based Water Softener
A salt-based water softener works by removing the hardness of the water by eliminating certain minerals. This type of softener ensures that the mineral causing hardness in water reaches a lesser concentration, making it soft-water. It works by removing the minerals causing hardness by replacing them with sodium or potassium ions.
The advantage of using a salt-based water softener is that it gives you water that enhances the life of your plumbing and other appliances. The output water leaves no marks on the utensils and is beneficial for your hair and skin.
The Functioning of Salt-Free Water Softener
The purpose of a salt-free water softener is to reduce the scale buildup that will, in turn, help you keep your plumbing and home appliances safe from hard-water damage. It is important to note that these salt-free water softeners do not convert hard water to soft water. In fact, if you test the water after passing through a salt-free water softener, you will find that there is hardly any impact on the hardness of the water.
Such water softeners work using various techniques; however, the most popular method is nucleation-assisted crystallization. In this method, the softener work by making the hardness minerals from microcrystals that do not choke the pipes or cause damage to appliances. https://waterfilterguru.com/best-salt-free-water-softener/has a list of the best hand-picked salt-free water softeners.
Concluding Thoughts
Salt-free water softeners and salt-less water softeners each have their purpose of serving. You need to check your actual requirement and the purpose of buying a water softener and then decide to select from these two options.
This quick guide was aimed at providing information to help you choose between salt-free and salt-less water softeners. We have explained the purpose and functioning of each type of water-softener to help you choose easily. Hopefully, you enjoyed reading the article and find it useful in making the right choice.

No significant changes will be made to the existing football field, track, baseball or softball fields. There will be minor improvements like the development of new field houses and additional parking adjacent to the softball field.
The project buildout will result in 32 new classrooms, eight labs, minor field improvements, and parking additions. The campus will receive a new drop-off and pick-up area, bus loop, gymnasiums, performing arts theater, and aquatics center, as part of the project.
The adjacent Environmentally Sensitive Habitat Area (ESHA) will be restored as part of the project, pedestrian trails throughout the site will be extended to improve circulation and accessibility and existing Bus Barn will be relocated to a dirt area adjacent to the District-owned Malibu Equestrian Park.
The MMHS Specific Plan reflects the anticipated buildout condition of the MMHS campus, only phase 1 of the plan is designed and funded for construction by Measure M which passed by Malibu voters in 2018. Construction of subsequent phases will require additional financial resources before they can move forward. Additional details about Measure M is posted online.
The notice of availability of DEIR is posted online. The presentation will be recorded and available for viewing the next day.

Mandatory Recycling Ordinance Approved For Organics
SANTA MONICA—The Santa Monica City Council on Tuesday, October 26 approved an ordinance that requires mandatory recycling for organics. The state of California has a new organics recycling mandate – Senate Bill 1383 – to halt organic materials like food and green waste from landfills to purposeful uses like compost, mulch, and renewable energy.
Under the ordinance, all Santa Monica single- and multi-family homes and commercial customers are required to separate waste using a three-bin system: black for refuse, blue for non-organics recycling such as cardboards and bottles, and green for organics recycling beginning January 1, 2022. Some customers have three bins, but some do not have a green bin, commonly known as the bin for yard waste. The green bin serves a wider use for all organics, which means food waste, food-soiled paper waste that is mixed in with food waste, and green waste (e.g., landscape and yard waste).
“We all want to do our part to reduce materials sent to the landfill and methane production, and now we have a big opportunity by properly recycling our everyday food and green waste,” said Mayor Sue Himmelrich. “Santa Monica residents and businesses have an impressive track record going above and beyond for the environment, and I anticipate this will be no different. As a community, we enthusiastically follow the state’s lead in reducing organic materials in landfills by 75% and edible food to landfills by 20% by 2025 along the way to becoming a zero waste community by 2030.”
Throughout the year, the City’s Resource Recovery and Recycling team conducted community outreach, including direct communication to the 1,500 or 10 percent of customers that do not have a green bin to provide the container at no extra charge in advance of the mandate. The team has met with dozens of businesses, multifamily buildings, community groups, and neighborhood organizations. Significant outreach and education on the three-bin system will continue into next year.
Account-holders who do not have a green bin and would like one at no extra charge, should contact [email protected] or (310) 458-2223. Customers can contact the division for a discounted kitchen pail for organics collection. To stay informed, sign up for bi-weekly community updates at www.santamonica.gov/newsletter.
The requirement takes effect on January 1, 2022 with enforcement to follow. There are limited waivers for the organics recycling mandate, including businesses and residents that collect a minimal amount of organics per week or if a customer’s building lacks adequate space for the required containers (subject to approval by the City).

Santa Monica Receives Year-End Financial Update
SANTA MONICA—On Tuesday, September 26, the Santa Monica City Council received an update on the city’s fiscal health, closed out the fiscal year 2020-2021 budget, and made small revisions to the 2021-2022 fiscal year budget through the year-end budget report.
“Our financial outlook continues to be positive thanks to prudent financial management and the hard decisions this Council made over the last two years to see us through the pandemic,” said Mayor Sue Himmelrich. “The much-needed federal aid that makes up 15% of our total projected revenue loss and better than anticipated revenue returns are helping to slowly put us back on track as we continue to provide meaningful community services with fewer resources while making a difference in our priority areas.”
According to a press release from the city’s website, Santa Monica’s budget remains in active recovery with reserves helping fill the gap for a balanced budget. Fewer reserves are expected to be leveraged due to revenues coming in six percent higher than anticipated as a result of the active housing market; higher sales, hotel tax and parking receipts; and the positive impact of the recently passed Measure SM Real Property Transfer Tax increase. Santa Monica will conserve the $20 million Shutdown Reserve originally needed to balance the 2020-2021 budget. The General Fund will still require the use of $22 million in one-time reserve funds, as previously planned, because revenues continue to be deeply impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
To assist emergency response, affordable housing, and the community priorities of homelessness, clean and safe spaces and services, and economic recovery, American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) federal stimulus funds that were unspent in the 2020-2021 budget as a result of their receipt at the end of the fiscal year will be re-appropriated for the fiscal year 2021-2022. In the next three years, staff will continue to use ARPA funds and evaluate the need to shift funds that would have gone towards capital improvements, to bolster operating programs and cover unanticipated cost increases until revenues reach pre-pandemic levels.
The Santa Monica City Council directed the immediate use of $1 million in existing funds. Staff will prioritize the funds from now through February 2022 in the areas of greatest community need. Modest budget adjustments were made with the total approximately $0.6 million for fiscal year 2020-2021 and approximately $2 million for fiscal year 2021-2022, $1.1 million of which is in the General Fund.
Outside the General Fund, the majority of Santa Monica’s other funds met revenue projections or had nominal variances and forecasts are positive.
The fee for utility payments were adjusted from $2.95 per transaction to 2.95 percent of the transaction amount to be consistent with the charge for other transactions. There will continue to be no fee for the use of paper checks, electronic checks, and cash. A complete list of fee adjustments can be seen by viewing the staff report.
Staff will return to the City Council with the Midyear Budget Report on February 8, 2022 to provide a more complete assessment of the city’s finances and progress towards recovery, including an updated five-year financial forecast.

What Is Your Go To Halloween Scary Movie?
HOLLYWOOD—When it comes to horror what is your go to scary movie? Is it a classic, something modern, something camp, an iconic villain, I think we can chat about this for hours if not days because everyone has their own cup of tea when it comes to horror. Some might like the supernatural, some might like ghost tales, the haunted house, zombies or wait, you might like the classic slasher that involves a madman going on a killing spree. Whatever your cup of tea, it’s time to examine some classics people.
If we truly want a classic monster movie, you have to go back to the 1930s and take a look at “Frankenstein.” It is the tale of a scientist who goes mad to create a monster and once that monster stops following the rules of the scientist it costs the creator greatly in the long run. Those horror flicks like “Dracula,” “Nosferatu,” “The Mummy” and countless others of the 30s-50s had more messages of morality tales.
We started to see a change in the genre in 1960 as a courtesy of Alfred Hitchcock and “Psycho.” Now some might argue it led to the slasher craze, but not quite, there was a film before that one called “Peeping Tom” that created that Point of View camera technique used by Bob Clark in “Black Christmas” (we’ll talk more about it later) and John Carpenter’s 1978 classic “Halloween.”
I love “Psycho” because it’s in black and white and forces you to get hooked onto the narrative, not other things. In addition, you have a focus on Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) and the iconic Marion Crane (Janet Leigh). I mean, a major character dies half-way into the movie and that shower scene? It is just iconic America. We move into the 70s and we see horror really ramp up. There is “Black Christmas” that changes the genre as we know it. Christmas is supposed to be joyous, but not when you have a killer inside the house making nefarious phone calls and threatening a group of sorority sisters. The tension this movie builds is incredible and that scene where Jess realizes the killer is in the house and she screams for Barb and Phyllis to answer her, just chilling.
We cannot forget how scary the Devil and possession can be with the iconic and I mean iconic “The Exorcist.” A flick that should NOT be remade, but Hollywood is doing it anyway. I just cannot explain it people. There is “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” which made torture porn before it became a term. The filming technique used in that flick just sends chills because the realism is too scary. “Carrie” the 1976 version makes the audience empathize with the title character who endures terrible bullying until she unleashes utter hell on her classmates at the prom. The 1975 Steven Spielberg classic, “Jaws” made you afraid to get into the water, “The Omen” was all about bad children and the Devil and then we had “Halloween.”
This is my go to flick I can watch it multiple times during the month of October because the suspense is so amazing. Slowly builds and reaches a climax and ending that is just damn satisfying to say the least. Michael Myers is an iconic villain, we establish an amazing heroine in Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Donald Pleasance is just a gem and the dialogue of this movie is just phenomenal. There is another classic in 1979 helmed by director Ridley Scott, “Alien.” This is how you build suspense people. Scott is a masterclass at doing this and with a creature that has an epic defense mechanism and stalks the crew who understands the danger they are in. Sigourney Weaver proves women can be badass in space and that reveal that Ash is a robot, the alien bursting through Kane’s chest, talk about a gasp people.
The 1980s is just horror riddled on top of horror so there is no way I’m highlighting all just a few classics. There is the 1980 classic “Friday the 13th” that usher the slasher genre in terms of epic gore and later introduced us to hockey-mask fiend Jason Voorhees. There is the dream stalker Freddy Krueger from “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” I loved the sequel “Aliens” that proved a sequel can be better than the original. I adored the enchanting narrative of Clive Barker’s “Hellraiser” introducing the audience to iconic villain Pinhead. You have an evil doll in Chucky from the original “Child’s Play” from 1988, which is just like a My Buddy doll I had as a kid.
The 90s was truly the drag of horror until 1996 brought us “Scream” that poked fun at horror, but still managed to be horrifying at the same time. Another flick that doesn’t get the horror praise it deserves is the 1999 thriller “The Sixth Sense” that delivered the best twist in horror ever. There is NOT a single person in the movie theater who did not gasp when it was revealed that Bruce Willis’ character was dead all along. Has never been replicated and it never will be America.
The 2000s ushered in remake chaos and the only worthy one in my opinion was the 2003 hit “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” that was a massive improvement over the original. When it comes to supernatural the 2002 hit “The Ring” leaves utter chills with a smart narrative and twist at the end that will knock your socks off. “Saw,” the 2004 gore fest that it is, introduced fell fledge torture porn, but also delivered a satisfying ending with a smart twist. The last 10 years I cannot highlight many standout horror flicks because I would love to chat about a great haunted house movie, but they just don’t make it. The only one that comes to mind is “The Conjuring” and its 2016 sequel “The Conjuring 2” which I thought was an exceptional sequel and it found a way to make you question the home you live in and who may have lived their prior to you.
In addition, the 2018 remake/sequel “Halloween” was a hit because it introduced Michael Myers to a new audience and the narrative really worked its sequel “Halloween Kills” not so much. As we enter 2022, the only flick at the moment that might change the genre yet again is the one that changed things in 1996, as “Scream” returns for its fifth installment people. I know I will not be the only person indulging in a bit of a horror marathon this holiday weekend as we celebrate Halloween. That is no pun to the actual film people, but you cannot watch a scary movie without watching the movie that everyone feels defines the holiday in all of its classic glory.  “I mean its Halloween; everyone is entitled to one good scare.”

Get Rid Of It People, Declutter Your Life!
UNITED STATES—Clutter, clutter people, we talk about it all the time and I’m realizing once you get things organized and in order, it just makes your life so much easier. This past week I did a massive and I mean massive overhaul of the basement. There were things in the furnace room, the laundry room, the closets, and just all over the place that needed to be addressed.
I found things that I didn’t even know I had. So what did I do? Tossed, kept and donated. There were so many things that I just did not need so I got rid of them. What am I keeping this for? Is it bringing me joy? No, it is not brining me joy in any fashion its taking up space so its needs to go. I don’t think I used so many large black trash bags in my life, but the aftermath was glorious.
Why? I realized how much more space I had in my home. Closets that were just full of things, I could actually walk into and see what I actually had. In addition, I was able to declutter other places in the home that were building with items and move them to other places to open up more space into the home. The frustrating thing about cleaning up clutter you’re forced to realize money you wastefully spent, things that you didn’t know that you had that are in near mint condition, but items that you could give to others who might need it and could actually use it.
The garbage can did not enjoy the loads of trash that will have to be picked up this week. Tiresome, yes without a doubt, but the biggest thing about decluttering your home is that you have to open your eyes to the fact that you might be a hoarder. You want to keep something simply because you purchased it. Guess what? No, no, you can’t do that successfully. You have to let things go. It might sting to do it, but it is the only way to truly rid the home of things that just take up space and for so many of us, there is just lots of things taking up space in the home that need to go. Now, not later, get rid of it right now to bring a bit of calm to your arena.

“Survivor 41” Recap: ‘Ready To Play Like A Lion’
HOLLYWOOD—So the merge, it has been the moment fans of “Survivor 41” have been eyeing for weeks and it happened sort of with a major twist on the latest episode, ‘Ready to Play Like a Lion.’ How so? The level of twists this season just keeps on coming people and it might have reached a level of overload if I’m being honest. So we are giving a twist within a twist with this merge, where there is NO TRIBAL this time, but the contestants will battle some will be left out and someone will gain an advantage that totally shapes the game as we know. Now you have to earn your way into the merge people, how crazy is that.
One team gets safety at the merge, one does not, they have to compete for safety in the next immunity challenge. Then on top of that we have a draw where two people will NOT compete and then the winning team will determine who is safe and the other person will be sent off. My head is literally spinning right now because of this twist it’s too much.
Shan and Ricard had a lot of tension. So the trust between these two is so fractured and might not be good moving forward. Yase seem to be united, however, Liana still does NOT trust Xander, and with Luvu, Naseer wants to keep the 6 strong, but that is not what DeShawn wants. So we have two teams of 5, Yellow (Heather, Xander, Liana, Shan, Tiffany) and Blue (DeShawn, Danny, Ricard, Sydney and Evvie) and Naseer and Erika’s fates to be determined.
So it was Blue in the lead, Yellow battled, but Blue edged out the victory; they were safe for now. With all the twists this season, something crazy is about to flip this game upside down people. So Blue had to choose between Erika and Naseer, one would eat, one would be sent to an isolated island with nothing for 2 days (they don’t know that person gets an advantage). Naseer was joining the merge feast, but Erica was not looking happy people. Little do they know Erika has an advantage coming and it could shake the game in an epic way and I like that angle.
Cannot believe that we are ONLY on Day 12 people, the pace is quite fast. Ricard and Evvie were fishing for information about Luvu’s connection with Erika and Danny was worried about a gender balance and he was focused on sending a woman home, particularly Erika, which if the editing tells us anything that is NOT going to happen. So the audience is finally getting a bit of a story for Erika who seemed invisible up to this point, but again “Survivor” knows a way to tug at your heart and make you empathize with characters that you want to root for.
Gosh this is a very loaded episode, so much to the point that we needed two hours. Back at the Luvu camp, Tiffany was paranoid as ever, starting to doubt Liana because she didn’t immediately share her advantage with her. Liana didn’t like that she was forced to share her advantage with Shan and Tiffany. The more you share the more dangerous it becomes. Xander bonded with Naseer noting that he was the only guy who could be eligible to be voted out.
Danny was really pushing Erika, which I know it will not work. Evvie, Sydney and Tiffany wanted to target Erika, but little do they know what Erika’s advantage in the game could be. Something tells me it is a game changer people. Shan went with the majority and she knew something. It was apparent Shan, Liana, Danny and Deshawn wanted to work together and to be honest, we just witnessed epic gameplay with a Black alliance with The Cookout on “Big Brother 23” who changed the game as we know it. Rather these four can do the same thing is to be determined.
When Jeff Probst noted there was no vote out in this week’s episode, I thought he might be lying, but he wasn’t which means next week has to be a double boot or at least 2 hours. Erika was surprised to see Jeff arrive and this is where the latest twist in the game came into effect. Jeff informed Erika she had tremendous power in the game, an hourglass. So she can leave the game in its natural state or she can go back in time and change history to change the outcome of yesterday’s challenge. By doing so, she forces the team with immunity to have to compete for safety and those who lost to gain immunity, which totally changes everything. She had just a day before leaving the island to make the decision. Of course, we get a cliffhanger, but we all know what is coming.
Erika would be an idiot not to reverse the game because you become safe. If the majority of your tribe sent you to exile why do you care? I wouldn’t even need to think about it. I’m safe and the people who sent me here are NO LONGER safe. Let’s shake this game to the core, of course the producers want this twist to cause ripples in the game people. I’m certain this is a “Survivor” first where we had an episode where no one was voted out, so next week “Survivor 41” better make up for this week’s episode.
