I think the best way to fight this AI shit is just to support actual creators. The cat's out of the bag with AI; our data's going to be taken and used without our consent whether we like it or not, so maybe we should put efforts into holding up those who create their own stuff. Comment/interact on people's writings and art. Make it worth them posting; make it clear that what the people are interested in isn't generated stuff, but things that people have actually done themselves. It's a drop in the ocean, but showing creators that it's them that deserve the support at least serves to cut off a tiny bit of oxygen to these AI hogs - and make a difference to creatives who are trying against hope to share with a community.

AI companies are acquiring content across the internet for a variety of purposes in all sorts of ways. There are currently very few regulations giving individuals control over how their content is used by AI platforms. Proposed regulations around the world, like the European Union’s AI Act, would give individuals more control over whether and how their content is utilized by this emerging technology. We support this right regardless of geographic location, so we’re releasing a toggle to opt out of sharing content from your public blogs with third parties, including AI platforms that use this content for model training. We’re also working with partners to ensure you have as much control as possible regarding what content is used.

Here are the important details:

We already discourage AI crawlers from gathering content from Tumblr and will continue to do so, save for those with which we partner. 

We want to represent all of you on Tumblr and ensure that protections are in place for how your content is used. We are committed to making sure our partners respect those decisions.

To opt out of sharing your public blogs’ content with third parties, visit each of your public blogs’ blog settings via the web interface and toggle on the “Prevent third-party sharing” option.

head up if you don’t want tumblrs partnered ai companies automatically scraping your blog for image datasets, you need to manually opt out.

You can’t do this in the app rn (apparently you can but I couldn’t find it so you might have to update), only the desktop version or web browser on your phone. It will also need to be done for every sideblog you have.

You find it by opening up your blog settings > scroll down to visibility > prevent third party sharing

As an aside, I’d thoroughly recommend opting out of having your blog scraped, even if you’re not an artist. Afaik Tumblr hasn’t explicitly stated which companies they’ll be partnering with, but the vagueness of that wording is really alarming.

These datasets use a lot of selfies for photorealistic results, moderation of who has access to these datasets is notoriously ass, and a lot of AI engines are being used to generate pornography and racist imagery (you can see this rn with the rise of ai generated propaganda). While ‘your likeness is used in an awful generated image without your consent’ IS a worst case scenario, it’s a really upsetting one. Protect yourselves.

A few months ago my PC crashed and I couldn't get it started again. It was nearly 10 years old, so I suppose it isn't surprising. It sucked, and for a few weeks I felt really defeated by it. Though I also saw it as a good opportunity to get back into traditional art. I hadn't made any traditional art in over a decade, so I had a lot of de-rusting to do! Here are some portraits I've drawn in the last few months. These are all done with graphite on sketch paper, and are 8.5" by 11" in dimension. Eventually I'll get back to digital, but for now I'm going to see what I can do with traditional. It's a nice escape from digital art. For instance, I blend using tissue paper and q-tips. I don't have to worry about my tissue paper needing any kind of updates. I don't have to worry about my q-tips no longer being functional due to a driver error. That's pretty nice!

I've got a few attempts at writing out the above in more detail, but wont injury you with it any more of it for now. :) Thanks for the interesting ideas, I hope you have fun with the ideas!
