i think. i think we have to change how we think about pets, specifically mammalian pets. shift it to how we think of 'exotic' pets, ie. birds, reptiles, amphibians, bugs, etc: beginner - expert.
people see mammal pets as easier to care for. no experience needed. so you get debates like the pitbull one where it's 'just bad owners' vs 'theyre just violent dogs' instead of the truth which is somewhere in the middle. because not all dogs are the same *difficulty level.*
you would not recommend a Blue Beauty snake as a beginner. it's harder to care for and has a more volatile disposition. this doesn't mean no one should have one, it just means *experienced owners* should be the people that do.
same with cats, dogs, and small mammals. some small mammals are more prone to biting and escaping, and yet are recommend the same to children. some cats are more high maintenance (long hairs that require more hygiene upkeep, etc), and yet we recommend all cats the same.
and then there's dogs.
while *some* specific breeds (like those with dreadlocked coats) are recommend for experienced owners, most dogs are treated as the same level of experience: a beginner pet. when in reality, even the most *easy* dogs are not beginner pets. they still require the training and maintenance that many other pets (ie. many cats) do not. and that's not even bringing in temperament!!!
people are encouraged to go to a shelter and get any dog, even if they've never had a dog before. this is Dangerous. and stupid.
we need to reclassify pets, *all pets* as beginner to expert, whether or not they are mammals. and as for pitbulls?
pitbulls are not inherently evil, but not everyone should have one. they are an *advanced experience pet.* people should only own them if they have already had experience with dogs, and are prepared to deal with aggression and dangerous behavior.
the problem is people don't like to think of mammals, especially dogs, like this. they are 'man's best friend!'
this is completely ignoring the amount of effort our ancestors put into both a) breeding and domestication of them, and b) training of them for specific purposes so that they aren't dangerous.
so that's what I think. we need to, as a society, shift our perception of
- dogs as beginner pets (they aren't)
- dogs as all equally difficult (they aren't)
- mammals as easier than other pets (incorrect! my corn snake is the easiest pet to take care of that i own!! and less dangerous to me than my cats!)
- the idea that you should just go get a pet, specifically a dog, from the shelter and assume you can care for it just because it's a dog (and then not take into account any other factors, such as breed temperament!)

The original percy jackson series is about cycles of abuse and neglect, right. Were introduced to percy as a kid who has clearly been left behind by a school system that has given up on him, restless and unengaged and self-defetist because hes been given nothing that works for him and no one even tries to meet him where he is. Then hes told no, listen, your neurodivergence is amazing and you just need to be given something that actually utilizes your unique palatte. And thats obviously the uplifting idea rick wanted for his kids, right. But once we get to know chb the same cycles are happening there too. There are kids "left behind" there too for one reason or another, because their parents dont want to claim them, because their parents werent important enough to get a cabin. Do you get it, all the kids who dont fit the most common neurotypes get shoved into the same closet. Kids are being left in a cruel world to fend for themselves without the tools they need. Theyre dying because no one bothered to accommodate them. Its such an obvious parallel that the first chapter introduces a teacher whos written to be especially hard on percys disability and she turns out to literally be one of these monsters trying to kill him. Meanwhile sally jackson tells him she named him after Perseus because she wanted a redemption for a hero whos story ended in tragedy. Meanwhile every book in the series replicates a greek myth step for step until the moment they break the cycle. Annabeth, playing Odysseus, is talked down from her hubris and grounded by her friends. Percy, playing Heracles, meets someone wronged by the original Heracles and rights his wrongs by refusing to go down the same selfish path as him. Monsters are reborn because they are--as the books explicitly call them--achetypes. These kids are stuck inside the cyclical nature of mythology because thats what happens to mythology, it gets retold over and over again. But these are the kids who have to live it. The series ends with percy being offered immortality and he rejects it because he wants to use his godly favor to force them to break their cycle of neglecting their kids. The series ends with a declaration that we cant keep letting this happen. The very first book offees the same choice. It ends with percy refusing to keep the head of medusa as a spoil of war, refusing his heroic reward. He lets his mother have the head and use it to kill gabe. Isnt that fucking crazy for a kids book? Gabe wasnt a Monster. He wasnt going to Turn to Dust and Disappear in a narratively convenient way. He was a living breathing mortal dude and percy and his mom killed him without remorse. Break the cycle of abuse!!!! Dont let this happen again!!! Anyway thats why the original percy jackson series is Hey where are you going with our breadsticks

Just in case you want another reason why banning abortion is incredibly stupid.
In Denmark abortion is not only legal, it’s paid for as part of universal healthcare and people don’t have to give a reason whatsoever. You just make an appointment with your doctor and request an abortion within the first three months and you’re pretty much all set (it admittedly gets more complicated after three months). When you ask for an abortion your doctor is also required by law to inform you how it’s done and that, should you need it, there will be psychological help before and after the abortion. That means people could get an abortion every month if they wanted to. Just go out into the world and fuck all they wanted without birth control or condoms and only have STDs to worry about.
So how many people per capita get abortions in Denmark? 14.3 compared to America’s 20.8. Our government laid out a beautiful shiny road with rose petals on it and yet people hardly ever use it.
My point being, banning abortions is not the answer if you want less abortions. People aren’t doing it because they’re irresponsible or selfish. I don’t know all the reasons why the numbers are lower here, just that free abortion with no financial consequences doesn’t result in more abortions.

This.
Yes! This is one of those things that has truly made me feel grown. It’s a weird feeling personally (Percy was my Harry Potter) but I’m happy (and slightly envious) for all the kids who get to grow up with this more faithful adaptation
Nothing has ever made me feel older than the new casting for Percy Jackson.
I grew up with those books. This is a character that was pretty seminal in my early life and now that they’re fatefully adapting this series I am forced to recognize how much time has passed since I first opened The Lightning Thief…
That said I know Walker Scobell is going to be great-he was fantastic in The Adam Project. And I can’t wait for these stories to reach a new generation of kids🥺

i think MOST of the fandom is mature enough not to complain about hair now, but i also know the production team is probably scared shitless of us and haunted by brunette annabeth. so we’ll get dark hair percy y’all
