All in the Past 2/3
Tumblr media
This started as a request from @angelasscribbles for ONE scene. Three parts later... I decided to make this a follow-up and alternate ending to one of my favorite short, angsty AUs, Unblemished, because we needed more angst. All three parts will be posted today.
Series Summary: Tobias & Casey were friends turned lovers whose different dreams led them to become friends once again. Two years after their painful breakup, Casey has moved on. Tobias is in town to attend his friend and one-time love's wedding, with his new girlfriend on his arm. It's just the wedding of an old friend, or, is it?
Part 2 Summary: Tobias's girlfriend, Meghan, has some questions for him, and he answers honestly - or so he thinks. Sienna attempts to get displeased Casey to see the truth. Tobias finally runs into Craig, the groom-to-be, and then it all falls apart.
Book: Open Heart (Post Series)
Characters/Pairings: Casey MacTavish (F!MC) x M!OC, Tobias Carrick x F!OC, Sienna Trinh

His eyes were wide open. Every microscopic crack and spec of dust on the ceiling above had been committed to memory. Tobias accepted that sleep wasn't going to happen about an hour ago. No, tonight, it was him, the humming sound of the air conditioner and his latest girlfriend blissfully sleeping at his side. Without waking, she snuggled closer to him, and he ran his fingers through her long, auburn hair as guilt consumed him. He genuinely liked Meghan; he cared for her. She was witty and kind. So beautiful that every head turned her way when she entered a room. He enjoyed her company, and she was good to him. Perhaps too good. He knew she deserved better than the half-truths he fed her early tonight. But were they lies if he was struggling to understand the truth himself? Any other fool would recognize what they had in Meghan. Then again, any other fool would never have let Casey go.
~~~~~
(Earlier that day)
Returning to his hotel room usually meant only one thing for him, but that's not where this was headed. Meghan, bless her, didn't seem upset. Still, Tobias couldn't shake the uneasiness that began creeping up on him during yesterday's flight and hadn't seemed to let down since. This wasn't the weekend he planned. A quick getaway to a luxury resort, a little pampering for him and his girl, some laughs with old friends, then wishing them well as they embarked on their new life together. It was supposed to be easy. Simple. But the human heart and mind can act in peculiar ways. Denial isn't always intentional, nor is it meant to be cruel. Sometimes, it's a mechanism designed to protect the individual at all costs. But there is a downside. We never know when the façade will begin to crumble, and even then, the truth isn't easy to accept. Tobias was about to learn a harsh lesson. We lie loudest when we lie to ourselves.
Meghan sat on the edge of the bed with a gentle smile. Removing her new sandals and gently rubbing her sore feet, breaking in new shoes hadn't been on her agenda. Tobias dutifully sat at her side, taking over the task so she could rest. Her head tilted back as her eyes closed, and a soothing sigh escaped her. This was nice. So nice that Meghan considered putting the rest aside. But she wasn't about to let a little comfort win over her practical mind.
"Tobias..." she began, gently touching his cheek. "I'm not mad, but I do want some answers."
"Sure. Ask away..."
"Why haven't you been upfront with me about you and Casey?"
"What do you mean? You know she's my ex, and we were friends before that. We decided being friends worked better for us, and that's what we've been for years. Where haven't I been upfront?"
"Maybe it wasn't your intention, and maybe I read it wrong, but I was under the impression she was a friend that became a brief romance until you both realized you should have never taken that step. But since we left Boston yesterday, I feel like there's more."
"Meg, Casey wasn't a fling, if that's what you're asking. We cared for each other greatly but wanted different things and decided we'd be better apart. And she's getting married tomorrow... so it's worked out well for her."
"Perhaps.  But how it worked out for Casey isn’t my concern... but you... I know we're relatively new... so this isn't a life or death issue... but I don't want to invest my heart anymore if you're still in love with someone else."
"In love with!" He blurted. "Meghan, we've been over for two years. Do I love her as a friend? Yeah... but I'm not in love with her anymore."
"But you were..."
"Yes, was... past tense. Are you telling me you don't have anyone you've loved in your past?"
"Of course I do. At our age, most do. But... I feel like she's the one who got away, which is fine. Many of us have that person in our past, but most don't attend their weddings."
"You’re right. And I wouldn’t attend her wedding if that’s who she was.”
“Tell me why you broke up, the real reason.”
Tobias stood and paced the floor. “Her residency ended, and she was deciding what offer to accept. Duke was a great fit, but... that led to the where are we headed discussion. She wanted to get married, have kids, a dog, and a backyard... I wanted Boston or at least another city. I don’t like grass. I wasn’t too sure about a pet. I didn’t mind a partner, for life even... but marriage, kids... that always sounded like a trap to me, one I didn’t want to fall into. We talked, and when we couldn’t find a compromise, we decided to go our separate ways.”
“Was it hard?”
“The hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.”
“Then you see my point... it wasn’t easy, and she’s still one of your best friends.”
He returned to Meghan’s side, gently touching her knee. “I’m sorry if I wasn’t clear about the extent of our relationship. But it’s irrelevant... because we’re in the present. Casey and Craig are my friends... I haven’t been sitting around pining for her.”
“What if she wasn’t with Craig?”
“Meg, that’s unfair. We can’t sit in a pile of what ifs; we can only go with what is.”
“You’re right,” she sighed. “I just don’t want my heart trampled on. I care about you, Tobias, and I think we’re building something good... I just want to make sure you’re all in, too. Are you?”
“I am,” he swallowed. “I wouldn’t have brought you here if I didn’t believe that.”
“OK,” she smiled. “Then there’s nothing more to discuss.”
“Look, I’ve had enough wedding events to last me a lifetime. Why don’t we go do some sightseeing, just the two of us? We can go wherever you want. No one will miss us until the ceremony tomorrow.”
“I’d love that,” she smiled. “But let me change into something that matches the shoes I had on during the flight. I don’t want to break anything else in until the wedding.”
“You do that,” he smiled.
He grabbed a beer from the mini-fridge, waiting for the sense of relief that washes over you after a discussion like the one they just had, but it never arrived. He mindlessly pulled the curtains aside to take in the view. The upgraded room was worth every cent; the view was magnificent. Then he shook his head. Of all the things his eyes could have landed on... it had to be her. She sat poolside, eyes glued on the book in her hands, and he chuckled. He never could get her out of a bookstore. He closed his eyes and exhaled deeply. I’m not in love with Casey anymore. He insisted. I’m absolutely not. So why did his heart ache as much as it had on that Boston night? After all this time, why did he feel like it had never healed at all?
~~~~~
Sienna was the vision of a Northern tourist, happy to be enjoying a balmier climate as she walked alongside the pool in a bright floral swimsuit with a matching sarong, Jackie O! sunglasses, and a floppy straw hat. The look was completed with the two frosty tropical drinks in her hands. Her smile was as bright as the afternoon sun as she approached Casey.
“I know you’re supposed to be relaxing for the big day,” she grinned. “But I would be remiss in my maid-of-honor duties if I wasn’t checking to ensure you’re not getting sunburned.”
“That’s what this lovely umbrella is for,” Casey smiled.
“Yeah, but it helps if it’s opened,” Sienna chuckled as she twisted the lever.
Casey accepted the strawberry daiquiri, humming with delight as the sweet sensation enveloped her. “This is so good. You’re a lifesaver.”
“That’s what best friends are for! Now, relaxation is nice, but is there anything I can do for tomorrow?”
“Nope,” Casey replied confidently. “All under control.”
“OK, what about for the rehearsal tonight?”
“Under control, too.”
“Casey, I’ll admit, I don’t have much experience with weddings, but I’ve never seen a bride this relaxed the day before her wedding!”
“It’s just a wedding,” Casey shrugged. “Our mothers are happy driving themselves crazy over the details. I just have to show up for hair and makeup, put on my white dress, and smile. It’ll work out.”
She turned back to her book, unaware of the concerned look her friend had fixed on her. Finally, Sienna had to speak.
“Casey, can I ask you something?”
“Of course.”
“Are you... happy?”
“Happy? Yeah... I’m happy.”
“Forgive me if I say that response isn’t terribly convincing.”
“Well, one doesn’t have to be gushing and oozing with delight to be happy, Si.”
“No, but it’s the day before your wedding, and maybe everyone isn’t a gushing, oozy kind of happy person, but... you always were.”
Casey closed her book and leaned back in the lounge chair. “If you have something to say, say it.”
“You’re right. I wouldn’t be your best friend if I didn’t. Do you want to get married?”
“Of course I do. Craig is a wonderful man, and he’s so good to me. We’re happy!”
“Happy... but not gushy and oozy happy.”
Casey removed her sunglasses and sat up to face her friend. “Who’s to say that’s for the best? I had gushing and over-the-top happiness. I know what it’s like. But what did it get me? It got me a broken heart. That amazing high dropped me into the lowest lows of my life. Days, months when I didn’t want to get out of bed...When I didn’t leave my house if not for work. And who got me out of that? Craig. He helped put me back together. And we are happy. No, it’s not all fireworks and rainbows, but those things aren’t real life. I’d rather live with reality.”
“Forgive me for saying this, Casey. But... I hope you’re not selling yourself short. I like Craig, I like him a lot, and I know he’s good to you, but you deserve the fireworks kind of love. And so does he. Settling isn’t going to do anyone....”
“I’m not settling! I love Craig; he loves me, and I’m not settling!”
“But are you in love with him?”
Casey looked directly at the pool without saying a word. She knew Sienna could see right through her when she lied, so she felt it wiser to say nothing. But Sienna wasn’t letting her off the hook.
“More importantly... are you in love with someone else?”
Casey’s neck flipped in Sienna’s direction with fire in her eyes.
“What are you insinuating?”
“I’m not insinuating. I’m asking. I’m not letting you say I do if your real answer is I’m not sure!”
“But I am sure!” Casey looked around to ensure no one could hear, then leaned closer to Sienna. “Fine! I’ll address the 800-pound gorilla in the room! Is my relationship the stuff of fairytales? Do I have moments when my heart practically stops beating because I love him so much? No. But real life isn’t a fairy tale. I had that kind of love, and I know how it feels. I was naïve enough to believe that if you find that, you would both do everything you can to never let it go. But you know what? I was wrong. Because I had it in my power to save it, and Tobias had it in his power, too. And guess what? Neither of us did. So what does that tell you?”
“It tells me you admitted you still love Tobias... but you’re not marrying him tomorrow.”
“You’re right. I’m not marrying him tomorrow, and I never would be.”
“So you’re settling.”
“NO! I’m not settling; I’m marrying someone I love and who loves me in return. Someone who wants the same things in life. Someone that I can build with and grow with, and that’s not a bad thing!”
“It’s not, but I feel like you’re selling me an insurance policy, not a reason to get married.”
Casey began to gather her belongings with a huff.
“You know what, if you disapprove of me marrying Craig and don’t want to stand up for me tomorrow, then don’t. But I’m marrying Craig tomorrow, and I wish it would be with my best friend by my side.”
“Hey, hey, hey...” Sienna grabbed Casey by the shoulders. “I’m not backing out. I’ll always stand beside you, no matter what. I just... I want to make sure you’re following your heart.”
“I’m following my head, Si. It’s always served me much better. I’m following my head, and my heart will follow. Now, please, can you try to be happy for me.”
“Sure,” Sienna said, pulling her into a hug. “I’ll try.”
~~~~~
Sightseeing on a scorching hot day was slightly more strenuous than Tobias & Meghan bargained for, and she had the splitting headache to prove it. As she lay in the room with a cool facecloth on her forehead,  Tobias headed to the hotel’s gift shop to pick up some more ibuprofen. He had just taken his wallet out to pay when he felt a clap on his back.
“I was wondering when I’d finally run into you.”
“Craig,” Tobias blurted as he greeted the groom-to-be. “I was wondering where you’ve been. Is the hospital going to let you attend your own wedding?”
“They are now,” the handsome, dirty blonde man smiled. “As of this afternoon, I told them to pretend I was already on my honeymoon in Bali because I’m not answering my phone.”
“Yeah, I know that feeling.”
Tobias liked Craig. At least he liked him as much as he could like the next man in Casey’s life. He didn’t want to. In fact, at first, he decided he wouldn’t. The first time he met him, he spent his entire drive to Raleigh listing all the reasons he wouldn’t like him. But Craig was so polite, friendly, welcoming... and he was good to Casey. What choice did he have?
He’d never forget the day he learned of existence. Casey called with the words he wasn’t prepared to hear. “...I didn’t want you to find out from someone else.” Tobias was sure his heart had stopped. He knew the day would come... someone like Casey wouldn’t remain single forever, but... this soon? Barely six months had passed... and he wasn’t prepared for how profound the pain would be. He tried convincing himself it was for the best, even when his visceral reaction was to book a flight to North Carolina and beg her for a second chance, to tell her he had made a horrible mistake.
He made a horrible mistake.
For the first time since they broke up, Tobias had been honest with himself. Now, he had to let her know. As Casey kept talking, he was thinking of the best way to tell her, but then, he heard the smile in her voice. It had been gone for so long. The end of their relationship had been punctuated with painful, tear-filled conversations; then abject heartbreak followed their choice. He almost forgot what it was like to hear her... happy. It killed him that another man was the cause, but who was he to take that from her? He hurt her enough already.
He tried to console himself. It’s just a boyfriend, a transitional one, at that. When they inevitably break up, I’ll be on the first flight to Raleigh to set this right. But a year later, Craig was on one knee, Casey was saying yes, and Tobias decided he’d have to learn to live with his heart cracked in two. He knew it would never heal, but he had to find a way to let go.
“Casey mentioned you wanted to shoot some hoops,” Craig's voice pulled Tobias from his thoughts. “The only time I’d have is tomorrow after breakfast...and it would be cutting it close.”
“You know what. Let’s do it next time we get together. My luck, you’d end up breaking something, and Casey would never forgive me.”
“What a notion!” Craig laughed.
“What?” Tobias laughed with a raised brow. “You breaking something?”
“No. Casey not forgiving you. In what world? You have to know my fiance would forgive you anything. But, I appreciate sparing me the broken bones.”
“Yeah, uh..” Tobias sputtered. “It’s your wedding day... hoops with me shouldn’t be on the schedule.”
“Nope, far more important things to tend.”
“You’re so right,” Tobias smiled wistfully. “I’m happy for you guys.”
“Thank you,” Craig said, extending his hand. “That means a lot.”
“Casey is a wonderful woman. Be good to her.”
“You can count on it,” Craig smiled.
To Tobias’s relief, a gaggle of groomsmen appeared out of nowhere and pulled Craig away. Tobias slipped into a waiting elevator, never so grateful to be alone, because one by one, the boulders in his wall of self-denial began to fall. He loved her, he loved her with all his heart... and he lost her... at this time tomorrow... she’d be another man’s wife. Life is full of mistakes; everyone makes them, but the most painful mistakes of all require us to live with a lifetime of regret. He felt the elevator walls closing in on him as his life sentence became clear; panic filled his chest, and he couldn’t breathe. His legs unable to sustain him, he fell to his knees, and for the first time in a long while, he couldn’t stop the tears from flowing.
And that’s how he ended up here. Lying in bed with the ceiling, his only friend. He couldn’t take anymore. He had to get out of the room, or he was sure he’d lose his mind. So he slipped out of bed and left a note for Meghan so she wouldn’t worry if she woke. The hotel’s bar closed hours ago, but the 24-hour liquor store was delivering a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue. That and a lounge chair in the gardens would need to get him through the night.
He was a quarter bottle in with no idea how much time had passed. He had already bargained with God three times. Couldn’t He just turn time back a couple years? Was that asking too much? Apparently, it was, and he was still sober enough to know asking a fourth time wouldn’t change the outcome. Downing the rest of the bottle and sleeping for a week sounded ideal. Still, sanity won, reminding him alcohol poisoning wouldn’t help. His best bet was to return to his hotel room and try to get some sleep. He stood up with a curse on his lips; he turned around and gasped when he found her standing there. He rubbed his eyes to make sure this wasn’t a dream.
“Hello, Tobias...” Casey whispered. “I’m glad I found you here.”
Ladies and gentlemen, we have touched down at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, where it is 80 degrees, and conditions are bright and sunny. We thank you for flying Transit Airlines and wish you the best with whatever brings you to the area.
"Sir?" A woman gently nudged Tobias's arm when he didn't reply. "Sir... I'm sorry, but I need to get...."
"Oh, of course," Tobias apologized, jumping from his seat to allow the woman through.
He was usually the first to get off a flight, but today, he found himself lost in his thoughts, and he still hadn't found his way back as he reached into the overhead compartment to grab his bag. All it took was an arm looping around his waist to snap him back into the present. The petite, red-haired beauty's smile lit up the cabin as she held him tight; she was as happy as he was pensive.
"I missed you," she beamed. "You were such a gentleman agreeing to give that mom your seat so she could sit with her child, but I have a warning for you."
"Oh yeah," he grinned. "What’s that?”
“If we’re ever on a flight longer than two hours, you’re prohibited from doing that. I need you near me... deal?”
“I’ll tell you what. If we’re ever on a flight longer than two hours, I’ll spring for first class, so it’s not an issue.”
“Hmmm, I could handle that,” Meghan smiled.
“Good,” he smiled, taking her hand. “Now, let’s get off this plane.”
~~~~~
He couldn’t describe his mood if he tried. Melancholy was too sad;  wistful may be more fitting, though neither truly worked. He was happy, he reminded himself. More importantly, Casey was happy, too. It had been over two years since that cold Boston night when they tearfully said goodbye. Fast friends from the start, they eventually turned into much more. When different goals ended their dreams of “forever,” they were heartbroken and said goodbye, foolishly believing it was where their story ended. People don’t always see the invisible string that binds souls that are always meant to be connected, and when Casey’s phone rang three months later, not answering was never a consideration. They started as friends, they decided, and perhaps that’s where they were meant to be. That’s what they were now. Friends. Good friends who now understood they were always meant to be in each other's lives.
“Welcome to the Umstead Hotel,” an overexuberant young woman smiled. “What name is your reservation under?”
“Uh... Carrick. Dr. Tobias Carrick.”
“I have you right here! You’re in town for the MacTavish-Duncan wedding?”
“That’s right,” he nodded.
“Wonderful! The couple is hosting a cocktail reception for their out-of-town guests in the lounge at six.”
“That’s so sweet!” Meghan gushed, taking hold of Tobias’s arm. “We’re going, right?”
“Of course,” he smiled with some apprehension. “As long as I get in a nap... that early flight wiped me out more than I thought it would.”
“Fine, old man,” Meghan laughed as they entered the elevator, her head firmly on his shoulder.
He was tired. He told himself. Besides, it’s normal to feel emotional when someone you are close to gets married. And Casey was one of his best friends. It all made sense. Perfect sense.
~~~~~
The evening found him at the bar alone, anxiously twirling his old-fashioned in his hand. They had only been in their room fifteen minutes when Meghan realized she left her shoes in Boston. She was in an Uber on her way to the North Hills Mall in minutes, leaving Tobias to his nap. He promised she’d be back by six, but Tobias knew her well enough to know if shoe shopping was involved... he would be lucky if she returned by ten.
He noticed a small group of wedding guests mingling toward the back of the lounge but didn’t recognize any faces. The normally social doctor wasn’t in the mood for small talk, so he stayed put. He didn’t want to come at all, but hurting Casey’s feelings wasn’t an option. Now, it looked like she was a no-show for her own party, so he made a decision. He had already waited the requisite twenty minutes; he was finishing this drink and then making a beeline back to his room. But as he raised the glass to his lips, he heard her. He heard her voice. It didn’t matter how much time had passed, he’d know it anywhere.
“Hello, stranger!”
They were just friends now, nothing more. So why did he feel his heart flutter? His signature smirk was firmly in place before turning to greet her. A natural defense mechanism to keep that fluttering at bay. But when his eyes fell upon her, all pretense disappeared.
How did she only become more beautiful? Etheral is how he’d describe her. Blonde hair pulled into a whispy updo, with delicate off-white flowers pinned to hold it in place. Her matching silk dress gracefully skimmed over every curve he knew so well, and her smile. That smile had melted his heart and pulled him out of more bad days than he dared to count. And after all the years he’d known her, after all, they had been through, it still rendered him speechless. Noticing his silence was lasting too long, he jumped from his bar stool to embrace her. A brilliant grin hid the war of emotions inside.
“Stranger indeed! I haven’t heard from you in a while, kid. I was beginning to think you rescinded my invitation.”
“As if!” Casey laughed. “It hasn’t been that long. You have to try managing a busy career, a publishing deadline, and planning a wedding for two hundred of your nearest and dearest. See how much time you’d have to chat.”
“Casey... do you ever see me in that position?” He asked wryly.
He swore he saw her smile falter, and when she replied, a bit of her effervescence was gone. But he couldn’t be convinced. It must have been one old-fashioned too many.
“No,” she spoke softly. “I guess I don’t.”
“You look stunning,” he smiled. “How do you plan to outdo this on your big day?”
“Stop,” she said with a playful slap on his arm. “I’m immune to your flattery by now, don’t you know?”
They both laughed nervously as his eyes roamed the room. Still, no sight of Meghan, and someone else was missing, too.
“Where’s Craig? I haven’t heard from him either. I was going to see if we could shoot some hoops before the wedding.”
“He got called into an emergency surgery,” she shrugged. “The glamourous life of doctors. And where is Mandy? You said you were bringing a plus one. I assumed she’d be joining you.”
“Mandy? It’s Meghan,” he chuckled. “Mandy and I broke up some time ago.”
“Oh, sorry. It’s hard to keep up with you. So, where is your latest and greatest?”
“She had to run to the mall for a few things. But she’ll be back soon.”
“Good,” Casey smiled politely. “I can’t wait to meet her. How long have you two...” She raised her hands, visibly checking herself. Her cheeks red with embarrassment. “I’m sorry, that’s none of my business...”
“It’s OK,” Tobias laughed, reassuringly touching her elbow, then dropping it when the gesture took both by surprise. “It’s not a state secret. Only a few months... don’t worry... we’re not headed down the alter anytime soon.”
Casey let out a wry laugh, and her words came out more curtly than intended. “I didn’t expect you would be.”
“Yeah,” Tobias muttered, gulping down the remains of his drink. “Walking down aisles isn’t exactly my thing. Is it?”
“Well, it was your excuse for ending things with me,” she replied with her arms crossed. “But you never know. Sometimes people change.”
Casey felt her stomach drop. What if that were to occur? Accepting that Tobias was generally opposed to marriage was one thing, but if he ever took that step, she’d have to admit that marriage wasn’t the issue... she was, and that was too painful to bear. She began to perspire, and she was filled with worry. This wasn’t the reaction she should have had when her wedding was just over a day away. Her eyes darted around the room, desperate to find a reason to escape.
“Well, I should mingle with the other guest,” she finally settled on. “Without Craig here, it’s double duty for me. But you and Meghan will be at brunch tomorrow morning, right?”
He hadn’t been aware of a brunch. Suddenly, the last thing he wanted to do was attend any events outside of the wedding itself, but there was a hint of pleading in her voice that he couldn’t mistake.
“Do you want me there?” he asked softly.
Casey nodded effusively. “I do.”
“Then I’ll be there,” he assured. “We both will.”
~~~~~
Brunch was... awkward. Tobias was sure Casey thought seating them together was a good idea, but perhaps she didn’t know how long Sienna Trinh could hold a grudge. And with Sienna’s plus one coming down with the flu, it made for an awkward trio.
Casey viewed their breakup as mutual, but Siennna saw things differently. Tobias was a stupid man who let his commitment issues ruin a wonderful thing, leaving her friend heartbroken. He hoped more than two years passing and Casey marrying someone else would have changed Sienna’s opinion of him, but all indications said otherwise. Sienna picked at her stack of blueberry pancakes as they all struggled to make small talk. Perhaps they could talk shop?
“So, Meghan, you’re at Edenbrook, too? What department do you work in?”
“I’m a paralegal. I work with the CEO.”
“Oh,” Sienna smiled politely, that didn’t work. After more uncomfortable silence, Meghan made the next attempt.
“I’m really looking forward to the wedding. The venue they selected is just beautiful! I’ve seen it on some wedding shows but never thought I’d get to attend a wedding there.”
Sienna held back a laugh. “I can understand that. I mean... because we live in Boston, and you know... you’re with Tobias.”
Losing patience, Tobias tossed his linen napkin on the table. “And what’s that supposed to mean, Si?”
“Just that you avoid weddings like the plague. I was shocked to hear you were coming.”
“It’s Casey’s wedding,” he smiled tersely. “Do you think I’d miss it?”
“I guess the answer’s no,” Sienna smiled smugly.
“You know, I’m going to run to the ladies' room,” Meghan announced.
Sienna wiped her lip, “I’ll join you.”
“No,” Meghan insisted. “I need a moment away from this cold war, and if you both care about Casey as much as you profess to, maybe you should work out whatever... this... is before her wedding day. Now, if you’ll excuse me.”
Tobias and Sienna sat slack-jawed momentarily, then a slight smile formed on his lips.
“I guess I deserved that,” Sienna stated. “Meghan seems lovely, and no matter my feelings toward you, I shouldn’t have made her uncomfortable. I owe her an apology.”
“Maybe what we owe her is doing what she asked us to do,” he replied. “Sienna... what exactly is your problem with me? I know people can be bitter about their best friend’s exes, but Casey and I are good friends. If we put the past in the past, why can’t you?”
Sienna shut her eyes, warring over how much she should or should not say.
“It’s different,” she started cautiously. “I got to see the extent of the damage after the two of you fell apart. Whose apartment do you think she ended up at that last night in Boston? Who do you think she sat on the phone listening to her cry all night after she moved? I know you experienced pain after things ended, but I experienced her pain. You were spared that.”
“Sienna, breakups are painful. You know that! And no, I didn’t see her immediate aftermath because we felt not contacting each other for a while would be for the best. But I was living through my own personal hell. It was hard on both of us.”
“Then why’d you do it? Tobias? All she wanted was a future with you... You’re the one who said it wasn’t possible!”
“We wanted different futures. Hers included a wedding... just like this one... a house in the suburbs, two kids, and a dog. I never wanted that and didn’t want to promise her something I couldn’t guarantee. Don’t you think I had wished I could? I could put you on the phone with my best friend. Kerry would tell you how wrong it is for Casey to want that life more than she wanted me... but you’re both wrong. We made a choice together, and it was painful as fuck. But, Si, it wasn’t my fault.”
“I guess,” Sienna sighed. “It’s just hard to see you both throw something so special, so rare away. It’s two years later and still hard to see.”
“I understand, but... Casey was dating Craig six months later, and she’s marrying him tomorrow. She and I are friends, hell, Craig and I are friends... so why are we even discussing this?”
“Because I’m her best friend... and I think I know what someone should be acting like before they get married... and I still don’t see that in Casey.”
“What... what are you talking about....”
“She’s happy, sure... to a degree... but I’ve seen her when she was truly happy, and this seems like a facsimile.”
“Sienna,” he stalled, “She’s busy planning this weekend and under a lot of stress, but I’ve been around them. She loves Craig.”
“I know she does,” Sienna replied. “But she was in love with you.”
Tobias sat in stunned silence when he noticed Craig mingling with guests across the way. Looking for any excuse to evade the topic, he spat, “There’s Craig, uh... I’ve been looking for him... wanted to see him before the wedding, but he seems a little evasive...”
“Of course he is. Tobias, you’re the one who got away. You’re her best friend... other than me... that is. Do you think he needs a reminder before he says his I dos?”
“I... I thought coming here was the right thing to do... I just wanted to... to be here for them... and to see...”
“To see what?”
“To see she really moved on. To really... let her go.”
“Right,” Sienna smiled. “But you’re over her. I’m glad we talked, T. I think my bitterness toward you is just my overprotectiveness of Casey. I love her, and I want what’s best for her. But I can be a bit of a momma bear.”
“No shit!” he said with a half-smile as Sienna narrowed her eyes at him.
“I’m trying to make amends. Shut up before I change my mind. Truce?”
“Of course. How could I be mad at you for being protective of Casey.”
“I know,” Sienna smiled, pushing away from the table. “Do me a favor. Just lay low until the wedding. Be there to support her, then go live your life and let Casey move on with hers. We have to trust that she made this decision knowing what’s right for her, and... we should both respect that.”
“I never intended to do anything but that.”
“Good.” Sienna looked up and saw Meghan approaching the table. “I owe you an apology and want to thank you. This talk was overdue, and I promise. We’ll be grown-ups from now on.”
“Hey, I was being a grown-up,” Tobias protested.
“Tobias, is this the hill you want to die on?” Sienna snapped back.
“Continue...” he grinned.
Sienna extended her hand. “It was very nice meeting you.”
“It’s lovely meeting you, too,” Meghan agreed. “Maybe we can get coffee back in Boston?”
“Sure, I’d like that. Tobias, I like her... be good to her.”
Tobias slipped his hand into Meghans and smiled. “That’s my intention. Thanks, Sienna.”
After Sienna walked away, Tobias turned to Meghan and thanked her for forcing them to talk. “You’re pretty special, you know. that?”
“I do,” she smiled sweetly. “But let's go back to our room because now it’s our turn to talk.”
"About?"
"About why we're at this wedding..."
"Meg," Tobias sighed. "We're here to see my friend... my friends... get married. Nothing more."
"Good, then it won't be an issue to have a quick talk about it...right?"
He let out a soft sigh. It was the last thing he wanted, but he knew better than to think Meghan would let it go.
"Right," he stood up, extending his hand to her. "Lead the way."

Daenarya has a few thoughts about Mal's new armor
[Mal Volari x Daenarya Masterlist] [Mal’s Orphanage]
Art by the incredible and amazing @weetlebeetle. I AM OBSESSED!!!! LOOK AT THEM!!!
Tumblr media
Mal: (grumbling) Why in the world would I want this leather armor? It leaves my arms entirely exposed to attacks! Not to mention the scrapes from branches and bushes.
Maiele: (smirking) Trust me. I think this armor will surprise you.
A Short while later...
(Daenarya approaches, completely captivated by Mal's appearance. She ignores his attempts to greet her, instead, she runs her hands over his chest in admiration.)
Mal: I take it this new armor is to your liking.
Daenarya: (bites her lips as she traces his pecs) Mmhmm... (her voice a little flustered) You could say that. It definitely enhances your —uh, features.
Mal: (holds her waist) I wasn't sure —
Daenarya: (cutting him off with a heated kiss) Shhh, less talking, I'm gonna need a few minutes to fully appreciate this, but in private— (She takes his hand and pulls him toward a more secluded location, looking back at him as she dragged him away.) It might be more than a few minutes. (She decided, licking her lips).
Mal: (smirks, making a mental note to thank Maiele)
Tumblr media
*Maiele belongs to @lilyoffandoms. I like to think Maiele was helping Mal out with this knowing how Daenarya would react lol
Daenarya is very much enjoying how the new armor emphasizes some of Mal's features 😏

A Sweet Surprise
[Bryce Lahela x Olivia Hadley Masterlist]
Pairing: Bryce Lahela x Olivia Hadley (F!OC)
Book: Open Heart
Word Count: ~1,000
Rating: general (all the sweet fluff)
Prompt: @choicesjuly2023challenge trophy spouse (kind of?); @choicesflashfics "I hope you know by now how much you mean to me"
Synopsis: Bryce helps Olivia surprise her pediatric patients with a cool, sweet treat.
Tumblr media
"Alright, everyone, I have a special surprise for you today!" Olivia announced, her voice filled with enthusiasm. She led a group of curious children into the therapy room. Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she gestured toward the art tables covered with colorful plastic table clothes that bulged, signaling something was hidden beneath.
The children's eyes widened with anticipation as they gathered around the table, unsure of what to expect. As Olivia dramatically pulled away the sheet, revealing the summer treat, a mix of confusion and curiosity spread across their faces.
One of the kids scrunched up his nose in disgust, pointing at the vibrant display, "What is it?"
Another child asked hesitantly, "Is it some kind of fruit salad?"
Olivia couldn't help but chuckle at their reactions. "Nope, it's not a fruit salad," she replied, her smile growing wider. "It's something even more special – Watermelon Pizza!"
Her announcement was met with a chorus of "wows", "huhs", and "what's thats?"
"Eww, it sounds weird!" Matteo was still skeptical and unsure of the treat.
Olivia chuckled warmly, kneeling down to his level. "I know it might sound strange, but I promise it's delicious and fun!"
Amaya, a young patient sitting beside him, had her reservations too. "Is it like a regular pizza with fruit on top?"
"Well, not quite! Instead of dough and cheese, we use watermelon as the base, and the toppings are all your favorite fruits – strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, peaches, pineapple, and kiwi!"
The kids exchanged curious glances. "I do like blueberries," Matteo decided.
"I do, too!" Amaya cheered. "And peaches... mmm!"
"Well, that's the cool thing about watermelon pizza—" Olivia's voice was quiet as if she were sharing a special secret with just the two of them. "—you can customize it with any fruit toppings you like!"
Marissa, a brave nine-year-old picked up a watermelon slice with pineapple, kiwi, and strawberries. Hesitantly, she took her first bite. Her eyes widened in surprise, a bright smile spreading across her face. "Mmm, it's so juicy!"
The other kids followed her lead. Their initial uncertainty turned into excitement as they tried the different types of watermelon pizza combinations that Olivia had prepared. Some couldn't get enough, taking seconds and thirds, while others savored their first slice.
Olivia watched with joy as the therapy room echoed with laughter and chatter. "Trying new things can lead to wonderful surprises!"
"Thank you, Dr. Olivia! You're the coolest!" Emma smiled, holding another slice of watermelon pizza. "See what I did there? Coolest like the watermelon because it's cool."
"That was very clever, Emma." A soft laugh slipped from her lips. "I'm glad you're enjoying it, but I can't take all the credit." She gestured down to the other end of the table, where Bryce prepared some custom watermelon pizza orders. "Dr. Bryce helped too! We finally found a meal that even Dr. Bryce could make," she teased, saying the next part a little louder, knowing he'd overhear.
Bryce pretended to look offended, placing a hand over his heart dramatically. "I'm a decent cook!"
"I'm not sure we're at decent yet, but we're working toward it." Olivia laughed, giving him a gentle nudge as she moved beside him. She shook her head playfully at his continued feigns of disappointment. Her voice quieted, "You're amazing at many other things."
Bryce raised an eyebrow, a mischievous smirk playing on his lips. "Any particular things coming to mind?" He teased, his fingers caressing hers between them.
Her face warmed under his darkening gaze. She took a breath composing herself as she looked at the delighted faces before her. "Cutting things," she decided. "Your surgical precision was exactly what we needed to cut all the toppings for our pizzas today."
After a moment of consideration, he tucked a lock of her red hair behind her ear. "I'll take it." His voice lowered, "Perhaps later though, I can hear more about the other things I'm supposedly amazing at."
As she finished her second slice, Amaya hurried over to Dr. Bryce for a third slice. "This time can I have pineapple and blueberries and maybe a strawberry on the side."
"You got it!" He happily took her plate, making her slice just as requested.
"Are you gonna marry Dr. Olivia?" Amaya asked as she waited.
Bryce chuckled. "Yes, I am!"
"Will you be Mrs. Dr. Bryce then?" She questioned, eyes wide. Before Olivia could reply, the young girl continued. "I think you should be Mr. Dr. Olivia instead," she nodded in agreement with herself as she gave Bryce her attention again. "Dr. Olivia is the best, so if you want to be the best, you should be Mr. Dr. Olivia instead."
His smile widened as he gazed in awe at his fiancée. "I think you're right. Dr. Olivia is pretty special. I'd be honored to be Mr. Dr. Olivia."
"Good!" Without another word, Amaya took her pizza and went back to her seat.
"You're sweet for going along with her," Olivia mused as she helped organize the remaining toppings. "Thanks for helping today."
"I meant what I said, Liv." He took her hand, his thumb brushing beneath her engagement ring. "You're incredible, and it would be an honor to be your Mr. Dr. Olivia."
"Is that so?" She asked curiously as she laced her fingers with his.
“I hope you know by now how much you mean to me,” Bryce confessed, his eyes never leaving hers. "It'd be my greatest privilege."
"Well then," she began, not even trying to temper the growing smile painting her features. "I'd be honored to have you as my, Mr. Dr. Olivia."
"I love the sound of that." Bryce leaned forward, closing the gap between them, brushing a tender kiss on her cheek.
He wrapped his arm around her, in awe that someone as amazing as her was his. The pair treasured the moment as they watched the joy on the children's faces as they laughed and chatted, enjoying their sweet surprise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This gave me she's Barbie, he's just Ken vibes. Even though our beautiful Bryce is so very much more, but to those sweet kids, Olivia is everything ❤️
Thank you so much for reading. I hoped you enjoyed this little fluffy piece. It kind of originated from this ask.

In the Stillness of Sunrise
[All Thomas Hunt x Alex Spencer Masterlists] [Red Carpet Diaries]
Pairing: Thomas Hunt x Alex Spencer (F!OC) Book: Red Carpet Diaries Word Count: ~550 Rating: General: no warnings (all the fluffy fluff) Prompts: “i love it when your voice is the first thing i hear in the morning.” (requested by @peonyblossom); “I hope you know by now how much you mean to me.” @choicesflashfics; @choicesjuly2023challenge: pink
Synopsis: Thomas and Alex share a soft morning moment.
Tumblr media
As the morning sky blushed with hues of pink and gold, a radiant glow emerged on the horizon. The sun's tender rays peeked through the curtains as it made its ascent. A delicate dance of light and shadows played in the room as the curtains swayed gently in the soft, refreshing breeze, whispering promises of the new and beautiful day ahead.
Thomas stirred as the warmth of the sun brushed against him, his arm instinctively reaching out to pull Alex closer. She snuggled against his chest, her breath soft and rhythmic. With eyes half-closed, he traced delicate circles on her back, his touch light and soothing. He couldn't help but smile as he felt her nuzzle against him.
"Good morning," he whispered, his voice still husky with sleep.
Alex mumbled a sleepy response, her fingers dancing lazily across his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart. "Morning," she murmured, shifting slightly before snuggling back into him, hoping for a few more minutes of sleep.
His lips pulled in the corners, his gaze mesmerized by his sleepy beauty. He pressed a tender kiss on top of her head. "You know," he whispered. "I love it when your voice is the first thing I hear in the morning."
Despite her attempt to sleep, her smile grew. "Even when it's a groggy, mumbled, half-asleep mess?"
"Especially then," he confessed, his fingers threading through her hair that fanned out down her back, "because it's only for me."
Her brow rose as she rested her chin on his chest, looking up at him skeptically.
"I hope you know by now how much you mean to me. That includes all of you." Thomas brushed his thumb over her cheek, cradling her face. "And, I trust no one else gets to enjoy your morning pleasantries as I do."
"I'm pleasant in the mornings now?" She giggled softly, her fingers drawing imaginary patterns on his chest. "And...well, it isn't only for you; there is another," she began hesitantly.
He sighed in amusement, "Bogart doesn't count."
"Why not? He loves my morning mumbles because he's usually thinking the same thing—" she paused to pout a moment, "—not yet, more sleep!"
"If you go back to sleep, how will you enjoy your coffee?" Thomas offered, slowly drawing back the blankets.
"That's the good thing about coffee," Alex mused as she wrapped herself around him. "It's good anytime. Even in another hour."
"Perhaps, but if you get up now, we might just have time to enjoy it in quiet before our sweet children wake," he countered. "Think about it. Sitting on the porch, with a fresh, warm cup of coffee, and you wrapped in my arms in the stillness of sunrise."
"Just us?"
"Just us." He brushed her hair away from her face, tucking it behind her ear. "Unless Bogart follows us."
"He'll probably stay with the twins. He takes his big brother duties very seriously."
"I had noticed." He smiled, grateful for how gentle but protective Bogart had been. "What do you say?"
"You make a very compelling argument."
"Is that a yes?"
"For you?" The question lingered as she propped herself up, tenderly caressing his jaw. She pressed a kiss there, his beard tickling her lips. There was no one else who could get her to agree to wake up before she had to, but him. "—Always."
Tumblr media
Thank you so much for reading. I always enjoy early mornings with these two love birds. They have my whole heart.
Thank you so much for the request @peonyblossom 🥰🥰🥰

Choices August Challenge 2023
This month's challenge will be a little different. The previous host had to back out so I am taking over... however, I was already planning on hosting 2 celebration weeks in August, which with the 2 book clubs would leave me with 5 events, and that's too much, even for me. So we're making August a combination month!
PlayChoice Game's 7th birthday is August 17th, so instead of having a birthday week, I'm including prompts for this event below and it'll run through the entire month of August.
There will also be prompts for Hollywood U + High School Story, as it's been one year since PB pulled those games. Without their success, we might not have gotten Choices.
Also, I've rescheduled sibling appreciation week a few times, so let's just add that in.
I also have some August holidays and summer prompts.
And lastly, similar to @choicesprompts, if you have a WIP from a previous challenge or event from this year that you really want to finish, feel free to submit it here too (regardless of the prompt). Let's clean out some WIPs.
Any of the prompts below can be used with any story/characters. They do not have to be used in the context of the "theme" they're posted under.
Happy Birthday, Choices!
In addition to the prompts below, posts celebrating Choices and your favorites (MCs, LIs, Friend Groups, Books, etc), will be accepted regardless of if a specific prompt is used
baking a cake
blowing out candles / making a wish
the perfect gift
surprising them with their favorite flowers
surprise party
spa break
"I'm sorry did you just call my/your birthday my 'womb escape'??"
“Are you crying? Please don’t cry, I didn’t think the gift was that bad-"
"I never liked celebrating my birthday."
"I don’t think fighting for my life is an acceptable way to celebrate my birthday"
"I’d rather eat you than cake."
"Put down the frosting!"
Hollywood U + High School Story Appreciation
Just like last year's event, any and all HWU and HSS content will be accepted regardless of if a specific prompt is used
movie premiere / red carpet
behind the scenes
coffee (all the coffee)
library dates/sneaking around in the stacks
falling asleep watching a movie
classes at HWU related to your MC's field of study
"Does a ninety minute movie really warrant this amount of snacks?"
"Your taste in movies is so bad"
"I love you but I'm not watching _____ again" -----
prom
graduation
High School Reunion / Where are they now?
school clubs
skipping class together
putting secret notes into the other's locker
being paired up for a project/presentation
"I accidentally grabbed your notebook" (What do they find, doodles, writings, poems, songs, little hearts with their initials?)
"It's finals week and you forgot we have a history exam?"
Sibling Appreciation
Any and all content that is focused on siblings in the fandom will be accepted regardless of if it fits a specific prompt
teaching their sibling about/how to do something
teasing each other
being overly protective of sibling
"Could you just stop talking for once?!"
"Don't blame it on me!"
"Thanks for being there"
"Can you pick me up?"
Siblings would help you bury a body, but they wouldn’t bring out the trash for you, no matter how nice you ask.
August Days
any August holiday
August 4: International Beer Day ; National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day
August 5: Sandcastle Day
August 6: National Friendship Day
August 9: Hold Hands Day
August 10: National S’mores Day
August 12-20: National Heritage Week
August 18: National Couple's Day
August 26: National Dog Day
August 27: National Just Because Day
August 30: National Beach Day
Summer Prompts:
popsicles
sidewalk chalk
camping
fairs/festival
fruit picking
sunglasses
Making summer playlists for each other
“it’s absolutely sweltering, how can you still want to cuddle?!”
“do we have any ice cream left?”
"Summer's almost over…"
“I couldn’t help myself… All the ice-cream flavours looked so good!”
Remember, you can also submit any WIP you have that are based on previous prompts from any 2023 event.
2023 Monthly Challenge Prompt Lists:
January ❤️ February ❤️ March ❤️ April ❤️ May ❤️ June ❤️ July
Guidelines + Rules
Submitted works will be featured on a weekly masterlist
Every form of creative work can be submitted: fanfiction, drabbles, moodboards, edits, drawings, poems, songs, sketches, and more—all are welcomed.
Work from any book and story from the Choices (and Pixelberry) universe are welcome (new and old alike)!
You can participate as many times as you want during the month
Clearly list the prompt your used
You can combine submissions for this event and others
Please add a cut to avoid long posts and exposing other fans to triggering/disturbing content.
If your work is NS*W please label it as such and use appropriate warnings. Adult content should be hidden under the page break.
You can get creative with the prompts. It can be a variation of the word and/or concept. It doesn’t have to be exact or literal. If the word inspires a train of thought that led you to something different, put that in the notes and send it in! Have fun with it! Make them work for you! The ultimate goal is just to find joy in creating!
Please tag @choicesmonthlychallenge and if you’d like to add me you can do so as well~ @lovealexhunt (feel free to DM me your work too since Tumblr tags are fickle)
