Given the... well, everything happening, the tournament will be put on hold as to not detract from the more pressing issues at hand. In the meantime, I urge you all to...
Mourn Nex Benedict and donate if you can to prevent another tragedy
Refuse to shut out Palestine and donate if you are able to, or at least help with a click
Contact lawmakers regarding KOSA and other internet-related bills
Keep hope and drive in your hearts for things to get better. Keep love in your hearts for the LGBTQ+ and indigenous people around you, and of course, yourself. This world tries to drill hopelessness into us so that we won't fight back. We all have value, we all can do something -- Even if it's just hope.

By the way, as much as I go on about chuuni cringe, I don't think it's a bad thing. I like to think of my own interest in chuuni as a celebration of it, in a way.
Being 14 years old is rough. It's a transitional point in life where you become more aware of your own individuality and how it's being restrained. While I believe chuunibyou as a phenomenon is not unique to Japan, I also don't think it's a coincidence that the term was coined in a country with conformist values and the age identified is around when students start being more aware of high school entrance exams. Rebellious values are something considered chuuni in Japan, likely rooted in the pressures of society and also the instinct to discard anything "childish" in an attempt to be seen as an adult (and in turn respected).
Chuuni, in all its forms, is an important step in self-discovery. Discovering your values, finding what you like and don't like -- and inevitably stumbling on the way. 14 years old is often your first real step into individuality, so of course everything isn't going to go right. You may think you know everything when you really don't, or pick a fight with the wrong people, or just try way too hard. That's fine. The naivety is in its own way beautiful, and when the heart is in the right place, should not be discarded simply out of embarrassment.

I think 14-year-olds should be allowed to embrace things that make being 14-years-old suck less. If they want to pretend to have forbidden magic powers, I'm not stopping them. There is no way to stop 14-year-olds from being Very 14 Years Old, and if the way that manifests is "cringe" but ultimately harmless, I see that as a win.

It is important to know the difference between Chuuni essence and Chuunibyou itself.
Chuuni essence is what I call the things that tend to excite those with chuunibyou. For example, magic circles, curses, and power for Evil Eye types, motorcycles and gang terminology for the DQN type, foreign terminology and alternative fashion for the subculture type, elaborate terminology or naming schemes for chuuni in general.
In effect, chuuni essence is what gives you a feeling of "Ah, the person who made this or like this are probably a bit chuunibyou". Things like Devil May Cry, edgy OCs, overly complicated weapon designs.
The importance of this distinction is that just because a character or person is involved with chuuni essence concepts, they're not necessarily chuunibyou themselves. Take complex terminology: in Japanese, there's words or phrases known as Yojijukugo: They're made of four kanji, many are akin to idioms and originate from Chinese scripture or Buddhist text. Given that, chuunibyou tend to love these, they're intricate, they give an air of knowledge, they look cool written out.
But the origins aren't really chuunibyou. Chuunibyou itself is linked with self-perception and a sense of cheesiness or cringiness. Buddha isn't chuuni. Similarly, a character who has dark powers and an edgy design isn't necessarily chuuni. Determining whether they are is often a topic of debate, which is where I think the distinction between chuuni essence and chuunibyou is important so you can distinguish whether a character just has elements a chuuni would like/design versus the character themselves being a chuuni.
Tumblr media
TL;DR Just because a character has design elements that are edgy and a dramatic presentation doesn't mean that they themselves are chuuni.

I try to avoid putting spoiler information into the character slides in case someone hasn't gotten into the series yet, but certain characters have their chuuni aspect come into play during a spoilery turning point in the story or are revealed to be chuuni as a plot twist. I try to avoid spoiling people on major plot points, but in these cases it feels inevitable. Thusly...

I am sorry to whoever submitted Grim from A Date With Death I do not know if he is a chuuni but I do want to play the game without getting spoiled. Alas I do not know if I can play it in time.

So far, we have 54 unique entrants! Assuming they are all chuunis (They are not) that means 18 of them will have to be cut, unless that number gets up to 64 in which case I may make this a 64 (+ Anghel) chuuni bracket. So to help with bolstering submissions for those who may get cut (Like Grimnir :( ) Here's a list of chuunis with more than one submission.
9 - Shun Kaidou 4 - Fischl, Omoharu Nakanaka 3 - Owain, Abyssal Black Flame Dragon, Gundham Tanaka, Wilhelm von Clausewitz Halcyon HISUIMARU, Yoshiko Tsushima, Ako Udagawa 2 - Celestia Ludenberg, Don Quixote (Limbus Company), G'raha Tia, Iana Magnolia/Konoha Satou, Kazuhiro Nakamura, Kim Namwoon, Uto Nakaji
Feel free to submit a character featured above as long as you haven't submitted them already, it helps me seed this properly and you can give propaganda that may be featured on their character slide. (Or even a general description. Please, for some of these webtoon characters.)
More importantly, if there's a chuuni you like but haven't submitted who isn't on the above lists (Like Grimnir) send them in! They may not make the cut otherwise, or possibly have not even been submitted yet.

I will do my best to not campaign as obnoxiously for Grimnir this year but you have to understand. 2023 was VERY good for Grimmy. He got two stage performances (One CG, one live action), a 5* uncap (complete with extra backstory lore), got added to the fighting game, got a skin for his character song... There is simply so much for me to be obnoxious about.

I could have sworn two people submitted Asselin BB II but only one response for him shows up. If you're the one who submitted him early on, mentioning his losses last year, please resubmit him!

While I mostly hype up Grimnir, pretty much every chuuni from a series I like is one of my dear children -- I'm the one writing like half these character slides, after all. I'm just very vocal about Grimnir because he's in a situation where he is a very beloved character (One of the most iconic Rage of Bahamut characters, was campaigned to be playable in Granblue for a long time, got trending on twitter at the mere hint of him getting a Valentine's day alt, a popular GBVS character request before he got in) just not on Tumblr, the Granblue community on here is like eight people and we don't really have much poll presence.
The culture shock of going from the Japanese granblue community with loads of Grimnir love to Tumblr dot com where I'm the sole person yelling about this chuuni war god. It's like if you had a bunch of children who all have friends who love them and talk to them but one of your kids does have friends who love them to death but you had to move to a new town where no one knows them. I have to support him more so the type of people who would be open to be his friend find him. Most of the other popular chuunis have a good fanbase here, just not Grimmy.

Yeah that checks out. I'm not even trying to figure out if they qualify as a chuuni at this point, just entranced by the concept here.
