A Creative Prayer
Our Creative Prayer to close the semester was borrowed from a new book I discovered this past month called “ All That is Made: A Guide to Faith and the Creative Life” from Alabaster.
Images above, from top:
If you are interested, you can buy this book on amazon or directly from Alabaster linked here.
This section is from page 15 of the book, from Part One: A Liturgy for Creatives, section 03 / Imagining Another Reality.

This took me a few hours to draw. It made a huge mess because I did it at home 😂
As I was drawing the beginning I told Tyler "this is the beginning. It's a bit of a mess. But it will look so different when it is done!" And when I finished he was surprised at the difference. It isn't perfect and it caused some frustration, but it is what it is. This was so much more fun and easy for me than the first few weeks of drawing. I have no idea why but I am asking for charcoal and art supplies for drawing for Christmas!!

I used to think I couldn't be a Christian artist without every piece of art I made glorifying God. I've learned that it doesn't have to directly say "praise God" but that doesn't mean it isn't imminating the goodness of God. For example, drawing a human is glorifying God's creation.
This doesn't mean we have to do things this way. But we have to be careful not to promote non-Christlike feelings. That is up for personal interpretation though. So it's a little difficult to explain.

Question of the week:
What does it mean to be a Christian artist?

The second question is not fair.  I have had hours long of conversations about what makes something art, and I feel oh so very limited to talk about it here.  Art is such a broad topic.  I won’t say a stick can’t be art, but I also can’t say that it is.  How you use it makes it art.  However, it was created by God, so does that make it a work of art?  Too much to debate here.
The context of art is essential.  It is just as essential to have context in the Bible as it is to have context in Art. Obviously, the Bible message is much different/valued different than art based off the fact that it’s God and all His glory.  However, interpreting the bible cannot be done without context.  Art is the same way.
Seeing a drawing of RGB or Kamala Harris right now has significant impacts to our nation.  However, a year ago, we may have said something very different. Same with the phrase. “I can’t breathe.” Context is essential.  While not being able to breathe may be a scary thought, seeing something like that portrayed in a piece has a much bigger effect than a year ago.  The context of that alone tells us that something has changed in history.

Questions of the Week:
How does context- where we see and engage with art- affect the way we perceive its value?
What makes something a work of art?

Zoom in and zoom out. I wish I had more time to focus in this with my new understanding of shading, lights, and darks.

Materials used can tell a different story.  Black and white versus color, as well as the style it is approached can have the same effect as well.  I think that using charcoal versus pencil can describe movement differently because of the texture. Adding words or remaining wordless can change the story to be more of an interpretation. Video versus photo, while photos can tell a story, film creates actual movement and storytelling.  I think changing materials can change the story, but you can also use them to tell them the same story.

Question of the Week:
How do the materials used to make art influence the meaning of the work?

I think abstraction gets you thinking outside the box.  It removes the limits we often place on ourselves as artists because abstraction is totally different than other categories.  I think artists might use abstraction to feel less restricted or help get out of ruts.  It can also be an artists way of digging deeper into an emotion they are feeling without it being something so obvious as a person crying or something.
Tumblr media
Question of the Week:
What’s abstraction good for? Describe some of the reasons why artists might employ abstraction in their work.

The human figure is unique to anything in creation.  Not only that, but it is unique to each person individually as well, depending on health, genetics, race and gender.  I think the idea of uniqueness with equity (or equality depending on your understanding) of each person as they are is an amazing idea that can be conveyed through the human figure. The human figure is so different, depending on each person, the time of day, seasons, locations, and the variety of things we can do with our bodies.  From pregnancy, to extreme weight lifting, from tattoos and hair dying to the “natural” look. Makeup, “plain Jane”, outfits? Our free will from God allows us to choose what we do.  And because of this, I think that is why the human form is chosen.  No one is the same and that makes every single piece of human form artwork different.

Question of the Week:
What do artists choose to work with the human figure? What ideas can an artist convey through the human figure? How?

FINALLY, last week I was able to finish my 50 times drawing. I used a chip clip and learned a lot about it...
