He is frowning over a deck of cards that look to have been part of a fifty-two card pick up scenario. Which is more or less true: they’d exploded out of his hand after trying to replicate a sleight of hand trick that Joe had picked up--quite naturally, as a matter of fact--and had tried to teach him as part of a case they’re readying themselves for on the Vegas strip.

Frank has learned a fair few of the simpler moves, but this one... Even with Joe’s slow motion, step by step instruction and his eagerness to teach his older brother something, he’s having a hard time getting the technique down.

All the cards slid back into a pile, Frank taps them on the table in front of him to neaten the stack before trying again.

"One more ti--"

The cards have other plans. Many of them, it turns out, have business on the floor. And Frank blinks dejectedly down at them, not immediately moving to pick them back up just yet.

He sighs when he finally slides off of the picnic table bench--again--to pick everything back up. And he sighs again when he notices that someone's watching.

"You have my permission to laugh," he says with another resigned sigh as he sets a knee down onto the packed earth to start gathering the cards before the wind has a chance to gust. "Objectively, this is funny."

He's not laughing. And he does not laugh when he bonks the back of his head on the corner of the picnic table either. But he's not mad, either.

One more sigh. For good measure.

"Can you hand me those?" he asks after extricating himself out from under the table.

A feeling he can't quite name presses down on him, and he's glad, for once, that Nancy's reception--wherever she is--had been too poor to video call. It's a bit like anger; parallel to guilt; a fraternal twin to sadness. It is many things all rolled up into one, but he know Nancy would have a name for it.

He doesn't want a name for it. Doesn't want to give it that power.

Ned shifts positions on the hotel terrace so that he can keep an eye on the door that exits the ballroom where his cousin's wedding reception is taking place. The DJ inside switches up the tempo, and Ned's breath hitches when he recognizes the first few notes of the new tune.

Bleakly, he wonders if Nancy remembers the song they'd first danced to, or if that information had been set off to the side like anniversaries and birthdays.

"Because you're busy," he tells her, forcing a smile and hoping it ekes out into his voice. Hoping it sounds more natural than it feels. "It's okay, Nancy. I can go stag to a wedding."

He can, but he doesn't like it. Too many of his family members have even yet to meet Nancy, and look at him with barely concealed curiosity--perhaps even pity?--as he stands around awkwardly under the weight of their combined gaze. Too many well-meaning aunts and family friends have led him over to groups of beautiful young women and even a few strapping young men, to their credit.

You're not getting any younger, Ned, they like to tease, patting his cheek and giving him loaded looks. I'd hoped you'd have married and had a kid or two by now.

And maybe he had too. But that's another thing he hasn't told Nancy.

"I'm taking lots of pictures," he tells her. "We can look at them together when you get back."
