Still alive but tiny life update I’m moving today and I literally couldn’t sleep from excitement and anxiety not too get to personal but I currently live with some pretty terrible people like don’t leave my room type of terrible but I’m so grateful and happy I’m leaving this place I just can’t contain my happiness plus I’m moving in with my love and this will be the first time I’ve ever lived with a significant other and I can’t wait once I setting into this new place I’ll have a bunch more art I promise but thank you nice people for interacting with my page you guys really motivate me to keep creating even if I don’t post anything here’s what my cat was for Halloween goodnight

Please can I have some advice about making comics, specifically figuring out panel/page layout? Robber/Robert was beautiful and flowed so nicely

(Sorry, I know that’s a big ask, especially busy as you are! I would be grateful for even the smallest nugget of wisdom!)

Hey! I know you're specifically referencing Robber/Robert, but all of the tips I gave in my How To Draw Sakana series still mostly apply to the way I make comics!

I plot out important story beats first (and the ending) and fill in little jokes between those mostly on the fly.

Even though RR is mostly digital (unlike Sakana, which is totally traditional), I still thumbnail RR traditionally because it's easier for me to see the whole page that way, and really get a sense of how big each panel and each element within the panel needs to be. All other details are basically omitted at this point, it's really just figuring out page composition. I also write out the dialogue traditionally. Even if I have a good idea of what I want the characters to say in every panel, trying to come up with exact dialogue later in the process always spells disaster for me. So I try to figure out dialogue and thumbnails at the same time.

The 5 in 5 rule is still what governs my panel/page layouts! I feel like the last [5] rule is worded a little poorly: what I mean is that hands can also add a lot to character acting and should be present as often as possible to avoid having too many "talking heads" panels. Even if a page is dialogue heavy, at least having the character gesture with hands or even do a small task (like make coffee or something) during a conversation or monologue will be more satisfying to read. ALSO, BACKGROUNDS ARE GOOD. I know I'm in the minority of people who LOVE drawing very complicated backgrounds, but even a few little lines or shapes or colors here and there behind a character can keep them present in the environment. I always try to Avoid The Void, but it really depends on how important the setting is to your story. I only draw comics with very specific important settings for some reason lol.

RR is in an American comics format (so roughly 10"x15", which is a 2x3 ratio and can scale down to 6x9 for print.) Again, I think it's important to get as much of a sense of how the page will look in the thumbnail stage as possible, without bogging yourself down with too many details. Often characters will just be pegs with circles for heads (and in Rob's case, two little antenna lines that make him look like a cricket), but where they are and how big they are are most crucial. I'd even suggest thumbnailing two consecutive pages right next to each other so you can really see the flow from one to the next.

The rest of the pages only really apply if you're thinking about doing your comic completely traditional. Penciling, inking, and lettering DON'T need to happen on the same page/paper, but I'm used to that workflow so that's how I do it!

LETTERING IS STILL VERY IMPORTANT THOUGH. I'm sorry to be harsh, but there's nothing worse than bad letters on a great looking comic. If you're not feeling great about your lettering capabilities, I'd suggest taking some time with tutorials and practice to get something that really fits your comic style.

FINALLY, it's important to go out there and find comics that you LIKE and really study what they're doing, how they're doing it, and why it speaks to you. Currently I'm looking at a lot of Franco-Belgian comics, which are bigger than american or manga sizes, and CHOCK FULL of backgrounds usually. Some day I'd like to make something that looks similar, so I'm using every comic project I make as practice to get closer and closer to that style.

Sun wukong practice

I have a very inconsistent style. So I’d figure I’d try and make a reference sheet for myself. So far I like him with -

• Hair like Small might because it goes out in all directions like a feral sunflower

• little freckles

• A big ass upper body and arms

If you have any more ideas about his details throw them my way I’m down to experiment

Still haven’t decided if I want him to be his lmk height because as much as I love a short king I have a few ideas in mind for large shenanigans.

How many layers of ‘glamour’ does Macaque have?

We know that Macaque is using magic to hide his blind eye since we briefly saw it in S1EP9

However there is a chance that Macaque is changing his appearance even more than just covering up his blind eye

During S3EP8 ‘Benched’ we briefly see Macaque’s tail turn white before turning back to black & this has caused some debate on whether or not Macaque actually has white fur since there are white furred Macaque’s & previous interpretations of Macaque such as Monkey King 2009 have depicted him with more of a white furred shade

So there is the possibility that Macaque could have white fur but is using another layer of glamour to cover it up though since we saw his blind eye in season one a lot of people have argued that Macaque doesn’t have another layer of glamour usually & that the white fur we saw was from LBD’s influence on Macaque in season 3.

Whether Macaque is naturally white furred or not though in season 3 it’s possible he had two layers of glamour one to cover his blind eye and one to cover his white fur but there’s also a possibility of a third layer of glamour.

For his six ears

Despite introducing himself as the Six Eared Macaque & LBD also referring to him under the same title we’ve never actually seen Macaque’s six ears though the shows team say that Macaque’s reaction to Pigsy’s singing is a reference to his six ears & keen hearing.

There’s been some debate on whether Macaque actually has six ears since we didn’t see them when we saw his blind eye & the argument that people have made is that the six ears are metaphorical since there’s a chance that Macaque’s ‘six ears’ are actually a pun based off an old Buddhist sayings of “The dharma is not to be transmitted to the sixth ear [i.e. the third pair/ person]”. A ‘sixth ear’ refers to an extra person in a private conversation, someone possibly eavesdropping or listening in & Macaque is said to have exceptional hearing. 

Macaque being called the Six Eared Macaque because he has the ability to constantly be ‘the sixth ear’ or third party listening in on peoples conversations.

Those that believe that Macaque had come from Monkey King representing his ‘evil side’ think that Macaque’s six ears are actually a reference to the six desires a concept found in some Buddhist and Taoist writings & those desires are things that Sun Wukong had to cast aside in order to achieve true enlightenment.

However in the show there is a chance that Macaque does literally have six ears that he’s hiding since he has at least one lego figure which were given six ears & the season 3 concept art showed him with six ears as well

So there is a chance that Macaque has six ears in the show but is just covering them up though that has led to some debate on why he revealed his blind eye in S1EP9 but not his ears even though he introduced himself as the Six Eared Macaque. The debate may continue until we actually see Macaque’s six ears in the show itself.

So as it stands it’s possible that Macaque is using three layers of glamour:

One to hide his blind eye

Another to hide his white fur (debatable since the white fur could have been caused by LBD 

A final one to hide his six ears

I love watching compilation videos of shows I haven’t watched, spoiling the entire show for myself, thennn deciding I want to watch the entire thing in one sitting except the last episode so I can tell myself I haven’t finished it yet.

I love the lmk fandom so much. Every other post is the cutest fluffiest heart melting head canon you’ve been seen that makes me double over and sob about silly little monkeys and their love for one another. OR you heartless bastards take the characters and literally put them through the fucking blender just pure blood gore and heartbreak and I’ve never loved a collection of strangers so much. I’ve never been more motivated to post and engage I fucking love you all. I can’t stand it man it’s affecting my life too much every waking moment I’m thinking of monkey. I literally took the time to read every single fanfiction in the shadowpeach tag on Ao3 my heart can’t take it.

Anyway here’s a sneak peak of something I’m working on thank you for coming to my TedTalk.
